Operation
XTo open:kick your foot into sensor detectionzoneCbelow the bumper.
XIf the trunk lid does not open after severalattempts:wait at least ten seconds thenmove your leg under the bumper once again.
If you hold your foot under the bumper for toolong, the trunk lid does not open. Repeat the legmovement more quickly if this occurs.
Opening automatically from inside
Important safety notes
GWARNING
Combustion engines emit poisonous exhaust
gases such as carbon monoxide. Exhaust
gases can enter the vehicle interior if the
trunk lid is open when the engine is running,
especially if the vehicle is in motion. There is a
risk of poisoning.
Always switch off the engine before opening
the trunk lid. Never drive with the trunk lid
open.
!The trunk lid swings upwards when opened.Therefore, make sure that there is sufficientclearance above the trunk lid.
The opening dimensions of the trunk lid can befound under "Vehicle data" (Ypage 325).
Opening
You can open the trunk lid from the driver's seatwhen the vehicle is stationary and unlocked.
XTo open:pull remote operating switchCforthe trunk lid until the trunk lid opens.
Limiting the opening angle of the tail-
gate
General notes
!Make sure there is sufficient clearance toopen the tailgate fully when setting the open-ing angle. The tailgate could otherwise bedamaged. Ideally, set the opening angle out-side.
You can limit the opening angle of the tailgate.This could be useful, for example, if there isinsufficient space above the tailgate. It is pos-sible to limit the tailgate in the top half of itsopening range.
To open the tailgate fully, pull the handle on theoutside of the tailgate again after it has stoppedautomatically. This does not delete the storedposition.
Activating
XTo open the tailgate:pull the handle on thetailgate.
XTo stop the opening procedure at thedesired position:
Rpress the closing button in the tailgate, or
Rpull the handle on the outside of the tailgateagain, or
Rpress the tailgate button on the SmartKey
XTo store the position:press and hold theclosing button on the tailgate until you hear ashort tone.The opening angle limiter is activated. Thetailgate will now stop in the stored positionwhen opening.

Resetting the side windows
If a side window can no longer be closed fully,you must reset it.
XClose all the doors.
XTurn the SmartKey to positionGorHin theignition lock (Ypage 123).
XPull the corresponding switch on the doorcontrol panel until the side window is com-pletely closed (Ypage 83).
XHold the switch for an additional second.
If the side window opens again slightly:
XImmediately pull the corresponding switch onthe door control panel until the side window iscompletely closed (Ypage 83).
XHold the switch for an additional second.
XIf the respective side window remains closedafter the button is released, then it has beenset correctly. If this is not the case, repeat thesteps above.
Problems with the side windows
GWARNING
If you close a side window again immediately after it has been blocked or reset, the side window
closes with increased or maximum force. The reversing feature is then not active. Parts of the
body could be trapped in the closing area in the process. This poses an increased risk of injury or
even fatal injury.
Make sure that no parts of the body are in the closing area. To stop the closing process, release
the switch or push the switch again to reopen the side window.

Opening and closing

automatic operation by pressing/pulling theswitch again.
After opening the sliding sunroof, the roller sun-blind closes slightly automatically. This reducesdrafts in the vehicle interior.
If the sliding sunroof is raised at the rear, it low-ers slightly automatically at higher speeds. Thenoise level in the vehicle interior is reduced as aresult.
At low speeds it raises again automatically.
You can also temporarily deactivate automaticlowering. To do so, press theWswitch. Thesliding sunroof raises again automatically.
You can continue to operate the sliding sunroofafter switching off the engine or removing theSmartKey from the ignition lock. This functionremains active for five minutes or until you opena front door.
The sliding sunroof cannot be opened if a roofcarrier is installed. In order to allow ventilationof the vehicle interior, you can raise the slidingsunroof.
If contact is made with a roof carrier approvedby Mercedes-Benz, the sliding sunroof lowersslightly but remains raised at the rear.
Rain-closing feature
The rain-closing feature is only available for vehi-cles with a rain sensor.
When the SmartKey is in positionZin the igni-tion lock or is removed, the sliding sunroofcloses automatically:
Rif it starts to rain.
Rat extreme outside temperatures.
Rafter six hours.
Rif there is a malfunction in the power supply.
The panorama roof with power tilt/sliding panelremains raised at the rear in order to allow ven-tilation of the vehicle interior.
If the panorama roof with power tilt/slidingpanel is obstructed while being closed by therain-closing feature, it opens again slightly. Therain-closing feature is then deactivated.
The panorama roof with power tilt/sliding paneldoes not close if:
Rit is raised at the rear.
Rit is blocked.
Rno rain is falling on the area of the windshieldbeing monitored by the rain sensor. If thevehicle, for example, is under a bridge or in a
carport, the field of the sensor may be cov-ered.
Operating the roller sunblind for the
panorama roof with power tilt/sliding
panel
Important safety notes
GWARNING
Parts of the body could become trapped
between the roller sunblind and frame or slid-
ing sunroof during automatic opening or clos-
ing. There is a risk of injury.
When opening or closing, make sure that no
body parts are in the sweep of the roller sun-
blind.
If somebody becomes trapped:
Rrelease the switch immediately, or
Rduring automatic operation, push the
switch briefly in any direction
The opening or closing procedure will be stop-
ped.
The roller sunblind shields the vehicle interiorfrom sunlight. The roller sunblind can only beopened and closed when the panorama roofwith power tilt/sliding panel is closed.
Roller sunblind reversing feature
The roller sunblind is equipped with an auto-matic reversing feature. If a solid object blocksor restricts the roller sunblind during the closingprocess, the roller sunblind opens again auto-matically. The automatic reversing feature isonly an aid and is not a substitute for your atten-tiveness when closing the roller sunblind.
GWARNING
The reversing feature does not react:
Rto soft, light and thin objects, e.g. small fin-
gers
Rwhen closing the roller sunblind again man-
ually immediately after automatic reversal
This means that the reversing feature cannot
prevent someone being trapped in these sit-
uations. There is a risk of injury.

Exterior lighting
General notes
For reasons of safety, Mercedes-Benz recom-mends that you drive with the lights switched oneven during the daytime. In some countries,operation of the headlamps varies due to legalrequirements and self-imposed obligations.
Setting the exterior lighting

USA only:
The daytime running lamps improve the visibilityof your vehicle during the day. To do this, thedaytime running lamps function must beswitched on using the on-board computer(Ypage 189).
If the engine is running and you turn the lightswitch to the`orXposition, the manualsettings take precedence over the daytime run-ning lamps.
Low-beam headlamps
Even if the light sensor does not detect that it isdark, the parking lamps and low-beam head-lamps switch on when the ignition is switched onand the light switch is set to theXposition.This is a particularly useful function in the eventof rain and fog.
XTo switch on the low-beam headlamps:turn the SmartKey to positionHin the igni-tion lock or start the engine.
XTurn the light switch toX.The greenXindicator lamp in the instru-ment cluster lights up.
Rear fog lamp
The rear fog lamp improves visibility of yourvehicle for the traffic behind in the event of thickfog. Please take note of the country-specificregulations for the use of rear fog lamps.
XTo switch on the rear fog lamp:turn theSmartKey in the ignition lock to positionHorstart the engine.
XTurn the light switch toXorX.
XPress the^button.The yellow^indicator lamp in the instru-ment cluster lights up.
XTo switch off the rear fog lamp:press the^button.The yellow^indicator lamp in the instru-ment cluster goes out.
iWhen the rear fog lamp is switched on, thecenter brake lamp in the tail lamp switches offdue to a legal requirement.
Parking lamps
!If the battery charge is very low, the parkinglamps or standing lamps are automaticallyswitched off to enable the next engine start.Always park your vehicle safely and in a well lit
area, in accordance with the relevant legalstipulations. Avoid using the`parkinglamps over a period of several hours. If pos-sible, switch on the right-handdor left-handcstanding lamps.
XTo switch on:turn the light switch to`.The green`indicator lamp in the instru-ment cluster lights up.
Standing lamps
Switching on the standing lamps ensures thecorresponding side of the vehicle is illuminated.
XTo switch on the standing lamps:theSmartKey is not in the ignition lock or it is inpositionZin the ignition lock.
XTurn the light switch toc(left-hand side ofthe vehicle) ord(right-hand side of thevehicle).
Combination switch
XTo indicate briefly:press the combinationswitch briefly to the pressure point in thedirection of arrowDor

Notes on breaking-in a new vehicle
Important safety notes
The sensor system of some driving and drivingsafety systems adjusts automatically while acertain distance is being driven after the vehiclehas been delivered or after repairs. Full systemeffectiveness is not reached until the end of thisteach-in procedure.
New and replaced brake pads and discs onlyreach their optimum braking effect after severalhundred kilometers of driving. Compensate forthis by applying greater force to the brake pedal.
The first 1000 miles (1500 km)
The more you look after the engine when it isnew, the more satisfied you will be with its per-formance in the future.
RYou should therefore drive at varying vehicleand engine speeds for the first 1000 miles(1500 km).
RAvoid heavy loads, e.g. driving at full throttle,during this period.
RChange gear in good time, before the tach-ometer needle is

Always pay careful attention to the traffic sit-
uation and be ready to brake.
GWARNING
Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC cannot
always clearly identify other road users and
complex traffic situations.
In such cases, Active Distance Assist
DISTRONIC can:
Rgive an unnecessary warning and then
brake the vehicle
Rneither give a warning nor intervene
Raccelerate or brake unexpectedly
There is a risk of an accident.
Continue to drive carefully and be ready to
brake, especially if Active Distance Assist
DISTRONIC warns you.
GWARNING
Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC brakes
your vehicle with up to 50% of the maximum
possible deceleration. If this deceleration is
not sufficient, Active Distance Assist
DISTRONIC alerts you with a visual and acous-
tic warning. There is a risk of an accident.
Adjust your speed in these cases and main-
tain sufficient distance.
Apply the brakes yourself and/or take evasive
action.
!When Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC orthe HOLD function is activated, the vehiclebrakes automatically in certain situations.
To avoid damage to the vehicle, deactivateActive Distance Assist DISTRONIC and theHOLD function in the following or similar sit-uations:
Rwhen towing the vehicle
Rin the car wash
Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC can neitherreduce the risk of an accident if you fail to adaptyour driving style, nor override the laws of phys-ics. Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC cannottake into account road, weather or traffic con-ditions. Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC isonly an aid. You are responsible for the distanceto the vehicle in front, for vehicle speed, forbraking in good time and for staying in your lane.
Do not use Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC:
RIn road and traffic conditions which do notallow you to maintain a constant speed, e.g. inheavy traffic or on winding roads
ROn slippery road surfaces. Braking or accel-erating could cause the drive wheels to losetraction and the vehicle could then skid
RIn poor visibility, e.g. due to fog, heavy rain orsnow
Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC may notdetect narrow vehicles driving in front, e.g.motorcycles, or vehicles driving in a staggeredformation.
In particular, the detection of obstacles can beimpaired if:
RThere is dirt on the sensors or anything elsecovering the sensors
RThere is snow or heavy rain

If you fail to adapt your driving style, 4MATIC canneither reduce the risk of accident nor overridethe laws of physics. 4MATIC cannot takeaccount of road, weather and traffic conditions.4MATIC is only an aid. You are responsible forthe distance to the vehicle in front, for vehiclespeed, for braking in good time and for staying inyour lane.
If a drive wheel spins due to insufficient grip:
ROnly depress the accelerator pedal as far asnecessary when pulling away.
RAccelerate less when driving.
iIn wintry driving conditions, the maximumeffect of 4MATIC can only be achieved if youuse winter tires (M+S tires), with snow chainsif necessary.
DYNAMIC BODY CONTROL
General notes
DYNAMIC BODY CONTROL offers improveddriving comfort and continuously controls thecalibration of the dampers. The damping char-acteristics adapt to the current operating anddriving situation.
The damping is tuned individually to each wheeland depends on:
Ryour driving style, e.g. sporty
Rthe road surface conditions
Rthe drive program selected
The drive program can be set using theDYNAMIC SELECT button (Ypage 129).
Selecting Comfort mode
In theComfortdrive program, the driving char-acteristics of your vehicle are more comforta-ble. Therefore, select this drive program if youprefer a more comfortable driving style. Alsoselect theComfortdrive program when drivingfast on straight roads, e.g. on straight stretchesof highway.
XPress DYNAMIC SELECT button (Ypage 129)as many times as necessary until theCom-fortdrive program is selected.
Selecting Sport mode
The firmer setting of the suspension tuning intheSportdrive program ensures even bettercontact with the road. Select this drive programwhen employing a sporty driving style, e.g. onwinding country roads.
XPress DYNAMIC SELECT button (Ypage 129)as many times as necessary until theSportdrive program is selected.
Parking Assist PARKTRONIC
Important safety notes
Parking Assist PARKTRONIC is an electronicparking aid with ultrasound. It monitors the areaaround your vehicle using six sensors in thefront bumper and six sensors in the rearbumper. Parking Assist PARKTRONIC visuallyand audibly indicates the distance between yourvehicle and an object.
Parking Assist PARKTRONIC is only an aid. It isnot a replacement for your attention to yourimmediate surroundings. You are alwaysresponsible for safe maneuvering, parking andexiting a parking space. Make sure that thereare no persons, animals or objects in the maneu-vering area when you are maneuvering or park-ing.
!When parking, pay particular attention toobjects above or below the sensors, such asflower pots or trailer drawbars. Parking AssistPARKTRONIC does not detect such objectswhen they are in the immediate vicinity of thevehicle. You could damage the vehicle or theobjects.
The sensors may not detect snow and otherobjects that absorb ultrasonic waves.
Ultrasonic sources such as an automatic carwash, the compressed-air brakes of a truck ora pneumatic drill could cause Parking AssistPARKTRONIC to malfunction.
Parking Assist PARKTRONIC may not functioncorrectly on uneven terrain.

The sensors must be free from dirt, ice or slush.They can otherwise not function correctly. Cleanthe sensors regularly, taking care not to scratchor damage them (Ypage 269).

Active Parking Assist
General notes
Active Parking Assist is an electronic parking aidwith ultrasound. It measures the road on bothsides of the vehicle. A parking symbol indicatesa suitable parking space. Active steering inter-vention and brake application can assist youduring parking and when exiting a parkingspace. You can also still use Parking AssistPARKTRONIC (Ypage 162).
Important safety notes
Active Parking Assist is merely an aid. It is not areplacement for your attention to your immedi-ate surroundings. You are always responsiblefor safe maneuvering, parking and exiting aparking space. Make sure that there are no per-sons, animals or objects in the maneuveringarea when you are maneuvering or parking.
When Parking Assist PARKTRONIC is deactiva-ted, Active Parking Assist is also unavailable.
GWARNING
While parking or pulling out of a parking
space, the vehicle swings out and can drive
onto areas of the oncoming lane. This could
cause you to collide with other road users or
objects. There is a risk of an accident.
Pay attention to other road users or objects.
Stop the vehicle if necessary or cancel the
Active Parking Assist parking procedure.
!If they cannot be avoided, drive over obsta-cles such as curbs slowly and at an obtuseangle. Otherwise, you may damage thewheels or tires.
Active Parking Assist may possibly indicateparking spaces which are not suitable for park-ing, for example:
Rwhere parking or stopping is prohibited
Rin front of driveways or entrances and exits
Ron unsuitable surfaces
