Activate or deactivate Acoustic Lock.
Activating/deactivating the panic alarm
Requirements
= The vehicle is switched oM.
To activate: press button 1 for approximately
one second.
A visual and audible alarm is triggered.To deactivate: brieOy press button 1 again.
or
Press the start/stop button.
A key belonging to the vehicle must be detec-
ted in the vehicle.
Changing the unlocking settings
Possible unlocking functions of the SmartKey:
= Central unlocking
= Unlocking the driver\bs door and fuel Nller Oap
To switch between settings: press the Ü
and ß buttons simultaneously for approx-
imately six seconds until the indicator lamp
Oashes twice.
Options when the unlocking function for the driv-
er\bs door and fuel Nller Oap has been selected:
= To unlock the vehicle centrally: press the
Ü button twice.
= Vehicles with KEYLESS-GO: if you touch the
inner surface of the door handle on the driv- er\bs door, only the driver\bs door and the fuel
Nller Oap will be unlocked.
Deactivating the function of the key
Vehicles with KEYLESS-GO: if you deactivate the
function of the key, the KEYLESS-GO functions are
also deactivated. Access or drive authorization by
KEYLESS-GO is then no longer possible with that particular key. Activate the function of the key so that all its functions will again be available.
You can also deactivate the function of the key to reduce the energy consumption of the key if youdo not use the vehicle or a key for an extended
period of time.
Press and hold the ß button on the key.With the key button ß pressed, immedi-
ately press key button Ü twice in quick
succession.
The indicator light of the key lights up once
brieOy and once for a long time.\bYou have the following options to reactivate
the key:
= Press any button on the key.
= Start the vehicle with the key in the center
console stowage space (  page 133).Opening and closing69

Removing/inserting the emergency key
Removing the emergency key
Press release button 1.
Emergency key 2 will be pushed out slightly.Pull out emergency key 2 until it engages in
the intermediate position.Press release button 1 again and fully
remove emergency key 2.
Inserting the emergency key
Press release button 1.Insert emergency key 2 to the intermediate
position or fully until it engages.\bYou can use the intermediate position of
emergency key 2 to attach the SmartKey to
a key ring.
Replacing the SmartKey battery
&DANGER Risk of fatal injury due to swal-
lowing batteries
Batteries contain toxic and corrosive substan-
ces. If batteries are swallowed or otherwise
enter the body, severe internal burns can
occur within two hours.
There is a risk of fatal injury!
Keep the batteries out of the reach of
children.If the lid and/or the battery compart-
ment do not close securely, stop using
the key and keep it away from children.If batteries are swallowed or otherwise
enter the body, seek immediate medical
attention.+ENVIRONMENTAL NOTE Environmental
damage due to improper disposal of bat-
teries
Batteries contain pollutants. It is illegal
to dispose of them with the household rub-
bish.

Dispose of batteries in an
environmentally responsible manner.
Take discharged batteries to a qualiNed
specialist workshop or to a collection
point for used batteries.
Requirements
= You require a CR 2032 3 V cell battery.
Mercedes-Benz recommends that you have the battery replaced at a qualiNed specialist work-
shop.
Remove the emergency key element

Press release knob 2 down fully and slide
cover 1 in the direction of the arrow.Fold out cover 1 in the direction of the arrow
and remove.Remove battery compartment 3 and take
out the discharged battery.Insert the new battery into battery compart-
ment 3. Observe the positive pole marking in
the battery compartment and on the battery when doing this.Push in battery compartment 3.Re-attach cover 1 and push it until it
engages.Problems with the key, troubleshooting
You can no longer lock or unlock the vehicle
Possible causes are:
= The key battery is weak or discharged.
Check the battery using the indicator lamp
(  page 68).Replace the key battery, if necessary
(  page 70).Use the replacement key.Use the mechanical key to lock or unlock
(  page 74).Have key checked at a qualiNed specialist
workshop.
There is interference from a powerful radio signal
source
Possible causes if the function of the key is impaired:
= high voltage power lines
= mobile phones
= electronic devices (notebooks, tablets)
=shielding due to metal objects or induction
loops for electrical gate systems or automatic
barriersMake sure that there is suPcient distance
between the key and the potential source of
interference.
You have lost a key
Have the key deactivated at a qualiNed spe-
cialist workshop.If necessary, have the mechanical lock
replaced as well.Opening and closing71

Doors
Unlocking/opening the doors from the inside
To unlock and open a front door: pull door
handle 1.To unlock a rear door: pull the rear door han-
dle.To open a rear door: pull the rear door handle
again.Centrally locking and unlocking the vehicle from the insideTo unlock: press button 1.To lock: press button 2.
The red indicator lamp on button 2 will light
up once the vehicle is locked.\bThe buttons are also on the front passenger door.This does not lock or unlock the fuel Nller Oap.
The vehicle will not be unlocked: = if you have locked the vehicle using the key
= if you have locked the vehicle using KEYLESS-
GO
Locking/unlocking the vehicle with KEYLESS-GO
Requirements
= The SmartKey is outside the vehicle.
= The distance between the SmartKey and the
vehicle does not exceed 3 s (1 m).
= The driver\bs door and the door on which the
door handle is operated are closed.
*NOTE Damage to the vehicle caused by
unintentionally opening the trunk lid
= When using an automatic car wash
= When using a high pressure cleaner
Deactivate the function of the SmartKey
in these situations.

Make sure that the SmartKey is at a min-
imum distance of 10 s (3 m) away from
the vehicle.
Observe the notes:
= on washing the vehicle in a car wash
(  page 271)
= on using a high-pressure cleaner
(  page 273)
To unlock the vehicle: touch the inner surface
of the door handle.To lock the vehicle: touch sensor surface 1
or 2 .Convenience closing: touch recessed sensor
surface 2 until the closing process has been
completed.\bFurther information on convenience closing (  page 81).
If you open the trunk lid from outside, the trunk
lid is automatically unlocked.
Problems with KEYLESS-GO, troubleshooting
You can no longer lock or unlock the vehicle using KEYLESS-GO
Possible causes: = The function of the SmartKey has been deacti-
vated.
= The SmartKey battery is weak or discharged.
Activate the function of the SmartKey
(  page 69).Check the battery using the indicator lamp
(  page 68).Replace the SmartKey battery, if necessary
(  page 70).Use the replacement SmartKey.Use the emergency key to lock or unlock
(  page 74).Have the vehicle and SmartKey checked at a
qualiNed specialist workshop.
There is interference from a powerful radio signal
source
Possible causes if the function of KEYLESS-GO is
impaired:
= High voltage power lines

Activating/deactivating the automatic locking fea-ture
The vehicle is locked automatically when the vehi-
cle is switched on and the wheels are turning
faster than walking pace.
To activate: press and hold button 2 for
approximately Nve seconds until an acoustic
signal sounds.To deactivate: press and hold button 1 for
approximately Nve seconds until an acoustic
signal sounds.
The red indicator lamp on button 2 lights up
once the vehicle is locked.
In the following situations, there is a danger of
being locked out when the function is activated:
= while the vehicle is being tow-started or
pushed
= if the vehicle is being tested on a roller dyna-
mometer
Locking/unlocking the vehicle with the emer-
gency key element
Locking/unlocking the driver\bs door with the
emergency key element
\bIf you wish to lock the vehicle entirely using
the emergency key element, Nrst press the
button for locking from the inside while the
driver\bs door is open. Then proceed to lock the driver\bs door using the emergency key ele-
ment.\bIf you unlock and open the driver\bs door with the emergency key element, this will trigger
the anti-thes alarm system.Remove the emergency key element
(  page 70).Insert the emergency key element as far as it
will go into opening 1 in the cover.Pull and hold the door handle.74Opening and closing

Pull the cover on the emergency key elementas straight as possible away from the vehicle until it releases.Release the door handle.To unlock: turn the emergency key element
counter-clockwise to position G.To lock: turn the emergency key element
clockwise to position G.Carefully press the cover onto the lock cylin-
der until it engages and is seated Nrmly.
Locking the front passenger door and rear doors
Insert a suitable object, e.g. the emergency
key element, into opening 1 on the door
lock.To lock the les-hand side of the vehicle: turn
the emergency key element counter-clockwise
as far as it will go.To lock the right-hand side of the vehicle: turn
the emergency key element clockwise as far as it will go.
If the locked door is then closed, it can no longer be opened from the outside.
Trunk
Opening the trunk lid
&DANGER Risk of exhaust gas poisoning
Combustion engines emit poisonous exhaust
gases such as carbon monoxide. Exhaust
gases can enter the vehicle interior if the trunk
lid is open when the engine is running, espe-
cially if the vehicle is in motion.
Always switch oM the engine before
opening the trunk lid.Never drive with the trunk lid open.Opening and closing75

*NOTE Damage to the trunk lid by obsta-
cles above the vehicle
The trunk lid swings upwards when it is
opened.
Therefore, make sure that there is suP-
cient clearance above the trunk lid.Vehicles with HANDS-FREE ACCESS: Make a
kicking movement with your foot below the
bumper (  page 77).Pull remote operating switch 1 until the
trunk lid opens.

There is a risk of injury, particularly in the
event of sudden braking or a sudden change
in direction.Always stow objects in such a way that
they cannot be thrown around.Before the journey, secure objects, lug-
gage or loads against slipping or tipping
over.Observe the notes on loading the vehicle.
Notes on closing the trunk lid: your vehicle is
equipped with automatic SmartKey recognition. If
a SmartKey belonging to the vehicle is detected in
the vehicle, the trunk lid will not be locked and will pop open again.
Note that the trunk lid will not be locked if the fol- lowing situation occurs:
= You have locked the vehicle and close the
trunk lid while a SmartKey belonging to the vehicle is inside the vehicle.
and
= A second SmartKey belonging to the vehicle is
not detected outside the vehicle.
Automatic SmartKey recognition is only an aidand is not a substitute for your attentiveness.Before locking, ensure that at least one
SmartKey belonging to the vehicle is outside the vehicle.To close the trunk lid: pull the trunk lid down-
wards using the handle recess and push it
closed.HANDS-FREE ACCESS function
With HANDS-FREE ACCESS, you can open the
trunk lid by performing a kicking movement under the bumper.
Observe the notes when opening the trunk lid (  page 75).

&WARNING Risk of burns caused by a hot
exhaust system
The vehicle exhaust system can become very hot. If you use HANDS-FREE ACCESS, you
could burn yourself by touching the exhaust
system.
Always ensure that you only make a kick-
ing movement within the detection range
of the sensors.*NOTE Damage to the vehicle caused by
unintentionally opening the trunk lid
= When using an automatic car wash
= When using a high pressure cleaner
Deactivate the function of the SmartKey
in these situations.
or
Make sure that the SmartKey is at a min-
imum distance of 10 s (3 m) away from
the vehicle.When making the kicking movement, make sure
that you are standing Nrmly on the ground. You
could otherwise lose your balance, e.g. on ice.
Observe the following notes: = The SmartKey is behind the vehicle.
= Stand at least 12 in (30 cm) away from the
vehicle while performing the kicking move-
ment.
= Do not make contact with the bumper while
making the kicking movement.
= Do not carry out the kicking movement too
slowly.
= The kicking movement must be towards the
vehicle and back again.1Detection range of the sensors
If several consecutive kicking movements are not
successful, wait ten seconds.
System limits
The system may be impaired or may not function
in the following cases:
= The sensors are dirty, e.g. due to road salt or
snow.
= The kicking movement is made using a pros-
thetic leg.
