Activating/deactivating the seat belt'schildspecial seat beltretractor
\nWARNINGRisk of injuryor death if aseat belt is unfastened whilethevehicleis in motion
Ifthe seat belt isreleased whilethevehicle isin motion,thechildrestraint system is nolonger correctly secured. Thechild seatsafetyfeature is deactivated andthe seatbelt is drawn in a bitbythe inertiareel.
It istherefore not possibletoengagethe seatbelt again.
Pullover andstopthevehicle safely assoon as possible, paying attentiontoroad and traffic conditions.
Activatethechild seat safetyfeatureagain and correctly securethechildrestraint system.
When enabled,the special seat beltretractorensuresthatthe seat belts ofthe frontpassenger seat andrear seats do not slackenoncethechildrestraint system is secured.
The seat belts onthefollowing seats are equip‐ped with a special seat beltretractor:
RFront passenger seat
RRear seats
Toinstall achildrestraint system:wheninstalling achildrestraint system, alwaysobservethe manufacturer's installation andoperating instructions aswell asthe informa‐tion inthis Operator's Manual.Pullthe seat belt smoothly fromthe seat beltoutlet.
Engagethe seat belttongue inthe seat beltbuckle.Toactivatethe special seat beltretrac‐tor:pullthe seat belt out fully and lettheinertiareelretract it again.Whenthe special seat beltretractor is activa‐ted,you should hear aratcheting sound.
Pushthechildrestraint system down untilthe seat belt sits tightly.Todeactivate the special seat beltretrac‐tor:presstherelease button ofthe seat beltbuckle.
Holdthe seat belttongue and guide backtothe seat belt outlet.
InstallingtheLATCH-type (ISOFIX)childrestraint system ontherear seat

ForLATCH-type (ISOFIX)childrestraint sys‐tems in whichthechild is secured usingtheintegrated seat belt inthechildrestraint sys‐tem,the permissible gross mass ofthechildandchildrestraint system is73lb (33kg).
Ifthechild andthechildrestraint systemtogetherweigh morethan73lb (33kg),theLATCH-type (ISOFIX)childrestraint systemwith integrated seat belt does not offer suffi‐
cient protection. Anexcessive load may beplaced ontheLATCH-type (ISOFIX)child seatattachments andthechild may not berestrained intheevent of an accident,forexample.
Ifthechild andthechildrestraint sys‐temtogetherweigh morethan73lb(33kg), useonly aLATCH-type (ISOFIX)childrestraint systemthat securesthechild withthevehicle seat belt.
Also securethechildrestraint systemwiththeTopTether belt, ifavailable.
Always comply withthe information aboutthemass ofthechildrestraint system:
Rinthe manufacturer's installation and operat‐ing instructionsforthechildrestraint systemused

Regularlycheckthatthe permissible gross massofthechild andchildrestraint system isstillcomplied with.

sAlways observethe correct use andthe suit‐ability ofthe seatsfor attaching achildrestraint system.
sAlways comply withthe manufacturer'sinstallation and operating instructionsforthechildrestraint system used.
sMake surethatthechild'sfeetdo nottouchthe front seat. If necessary,movethe frontseatforward slightly.
Whenyou are installing aLATCH-type(ISOFIX)childrestraint system, observethefol‐lowing:
sWhenyou are using a Group 0/0+ babycar seat and a Group 1rearward-facingchildrestraint system on arear seat:adjustthe front seat sothatthe seat doesnottouchthechildrestraint system.
sWhenyou are using a Group 1forward-facingchildrestraint system:the back‐restofthechildrestraint system must, as

far as possible, lieflat againstthe backrestofthevehicle seat.
sYou can havethe headrestraints oftherearseatsremoved and installedbyaqualifiedspecialistworkshop. This may be necessaryforthe use of certainchildrestraint sys‐tems.
sFor certainchildrestraint systems inweightgroup 2 or 3,there may berestrictions inthe maximum size setting, e.g. duetopossi‐ble contact with theroof.
sThechildrestraint system must not beten‐sioned betweentheroof andthe seat cush‐ion and/or be installedfacingthe wrongdirection. Where possible, adjustthe seatcushion inclination accordingly.

As aresult,childrestraint systems cannotperformtheir intended protective function.Rear seat backreststhat are not locked canalso cause additional injuries, e.g. intheevent of an accident.
Always lockrear seat backrests afterinstallingTopTether belts.
Observethe lockverification indicator.

Ifyou secure achild in arearward-facingchildrestraint system onthe front passengerseat andthePASSENGER AIRBAG OFF indi‐cator lamp is off,the front passenger airbagcan deploy intheevent of an accident.
Thechild could bestruckbythe airbag.
Always ensurethatthe front passenger air‐bag is deactivated. ThePASSENGER AIRBAGOFF indicator lamp must be lit.
NEVER use arearward-facingchildrestraintsystem on a seat protectedbyan ENABLEDFRONT AIRBAGin front of it, DEATH or SERI‐OUS INJURYtotheCHILD can occur.
Observethe specific instructionsfortherear‐ward-facing andforward-facingchildrestraintsystems (→page 59).
Warning notice onthe front passenger sun visor
Always observethestatus ofthe front passengerfront airbag onthePASSENGER AIRBAG OFFindicator lamp:
RWhen using arearward-facingchildrestraintsystem onthe front passenger seat,the frontpassenger front airbag must always be disa‐bled. This is onlythe case ifthePASSENGERAIRBAG OFF indicator lamp is lit continu‐ously (→page 43).
RIfthePASSENGER AIRBAG OFF indicatorlamp is off,the front passenger front airbagis enabled. The front passenger front airbagmay deploy during an accident.

When installing a belt-securedchildrestraintsystem onthe front passenger seat, alwaysobservethefollowing:
sObservethechildrestraint system manufac‐turer's installation and operating instruc‐tions.
sWhen using aforward-facingchildrestraintsystem in Group I:removethe headrestraint fromtherespective seat, if possi‐ble.
Whenyouremovethechildrestraint sys‐tem, installthe headrestraint again immedi‐ately and adjust allthe headrestraints cor‐rectly.
sThe backrestoftheforward-facingchildrestraint system must lie asflat as possibleagainstthe backrest ofthe front passengerseat.
sFor certainchildrestraint systems inweightgroup II or III,there may berestrictions inthe maximum size setting, e.g. duetopossi‐ble contact with theroof.

Adjusting the front seat mechanically andelectrically (without Seat ComfortPackage)

While movingthe seats, make surethathands orother body parts do notgetunderthe lever assembly ofthe seatadjustment system.

If headrestraints are not installed or areadjusted incorrectly,the headrestraints can‐not provide protection as intended.
There is an increasedrisk of injury inthehead and neck area, e.g. intheevent of anaccident or when braking.
Always drive withthe headrestraintsinstalled.
Before driving off, make sureforeveryvehicle occupantthatthe center oftheheadrestraint supportsthe back ofthehead at abouteye level.
Do not interchangethe headrestraints ofthefront andrear seats. Otherwise,you will not beabletoadjustthe height and angle ofthe headrestraints correctly.
Adjustthe headrestraintfore-and-aft position sothat it is as close as possibletothe back ofyourhead.
\nWARNINGRisk of injuryor death duetoincorrect seat position
The seat belt does not offerthe intendedlevel of protection ifyou havenot movedtheseat backresttoan almostvertical position.
When braking or intheevent of an accident,you could slide underneaththe seat belt andsustain abdominal or neck injuries,forexam‐ple.
Adjustthe seat properlybefore begin‐ningyour journey.
Always ensurethatthe seat backrest isin an almostvertical position andthatthe shoulder section ofyour seat belt isrouted acrossthe center ofyour shoul‐der.
NOTEDamagetothe seats when movingthe seats back
The seats may be damagedbyobjects whenmovingthe seats back.
When movingthe seats back,makesurethatthere are no objects inthefootwell, under or behindthe seats.
