Ifyou shift down on slipperyroad surfacestoincreasethe engine braking effect,the drivewheels may lose traction.
Do not shift down on slipperyroad sur‐facestoincreasethe engine brakingeffect.
Whenthe automatic transmission is shiftedtoposition[,you can manually shift it withthe
steering wheel paddle shifter.If permitted,theautomatic transmission shiftstothe nextgearup or down depending onthesteering wheelpaddle shifter being pulled.
You havetwo optionstomanually shiftthe auto‐matic transmission:

Thegears shift automatically when manualgear‐shifting is deactivated.

4MATIC ensuresthat allfour wheels are driven
when needed.Together with ESP®and 4ETS,4MATIC improvesthe traction ofyourvehiclewhenever a driven wheel spins duetoinsuffi‐cient traction.
Ifyoufailtoadaptyour drivingstyle, 4MATIC canneitherreducetherisk of an accident norover‐ridethe lawsof physics. 4MATIC cannottakeaccount ofroad,weather and traffic conditions.4MATIC is only an aid.You areresponsible espe‐ciallyfor maintaining a safe distance fromthevehicle in front,forvehicle speed,for braking ingood time andforstaying in lane.
In wintryroad conditions,the maximumeffect of 4MATIC can be achieved only ifyouuse winter tires (M+S tires), with snowchains if necessary.

Function of ABS (Anti-lock Braking System)
ABSregulatesthe brake pressure in critical driv‐ing situations:
RDuring braking, e.g. at full brake applicationor insufficient tire traction,the wheels areprevented from locking.
RVehiclesteerability while braking is ensured.
If ABS intervenes when braking,you willfeel apulsing inthe brake pedal. The pulsating brake
pedal can be an indication of hazardousroadconditions and can serveas aremindertotakeextra care while driving.
System limitationsRABS is active from speeds of approx. 5mph(8 km/h).
RABS may be impaired or may not function if amalfunction has occurred andtheyel‐low%ABSwarning lamp lights up contin‐uously inthe instrument cluster aftertheengine isstarted.
Function ofBAS (Brake Assist System)
