Driving sy stems and your responsibility
Yo ur vehicle is equipped with driving sy stems
which assist youin dr iving, parking and maneu‐
ve ring theve hicle. The driving sy stems are tools
and do not relie ve you of your responsibility. Pay
attention tothe tra ffic conditions at all times
and inter vene when necessary . Beaware of the
limitations rega rding the safe use of these sys‐
te ms.
Fu nction of thera dar senso rs
Some driving and driving safe ty systems use
ra dar sensors tomonitor the area in front of,
behind or next totheve hicle (depending on the
ve hicle&#39;s equipment).
Depending on theve hicle&#39;s equipment, thera dar
sensors are integrated behind the bumpers
and/or behind thera diator grille. Keep these
parts free of dirt, ice and slush (
→page 327).
The sensors must not be co vered, forex ample
by bicycle rack s, ove rhanging loads or radar-
re flecting sticke rs.Fo llowing an impact and in
th eeve nt of associated damage , which may not
be visible, tothe bumpers or radiator grille, ha ve
th e function of thera dar sensors checked at a
qu alified specialist workshop. The driver assis‐
ta nce sy stem may no longer workproperly.

The driven speed is adap ted when theve hicle is
le ve l with the tra ffic signs. The speed limit dis‐
play in the Instrument Display is alw ays update d
when theve hicle is le vel with the tra ffic sign.
If Ac tive Dis tance Assist DISTRONIC has been
put into passive modebypressing the accelera‐ to
r pedal, only speed limits which are higher
th an the set speed are adop ted.
Pulling the cruise control le ver will set the dis‐
pla yed speed limit as the speed, pr ovided that:
RAc tive Speed Limit Assi sthas been activated
in the multimedia sy stem and
RAc tive Dis tance Assist DISTRONIC has been
acti vated.
If no speed limit is displa yed when the le ver is
operated, the speed set bythe driver is adop ted.
Drive prog ram
The DYNA MIC SELECT switch allo wsyouto
ch ange the driving style of Active Dis tance
Assist DISTRONIC. Depending on which drive
prog ram is selected, the driving characteristics
can be geared towa rds fuel econom y,comfort or
dynamic per form ance (

Sy stem limitations
Ve hicles with the Driving Assistance Pack‐
age: Active Dis tance Assist DISTRONIC is acti ve
in the 0 mph(0 km/h) to130mp h(210 km/h)
speed range. The sy
stem may be impaired or may not function
in thefo llowing ins tances, forex ample:
RIn snow ,ra in, fog, heavy spr ay, if there is
gl are, in direct sunlight or in greatlyvarying
light conditions.
RThe windshield in the area of the camera is
dirty, mis ted up, damaged or co vered.
RIfth era dar sensors are dirty or co vered.
ROn slippery roads, braking or accelerating
can cause the drive wheels tolose traction
and theve hicle could then skid.
RIn parking garage s,tollst ations or on roads
with steep uphill or downhill gradients.
Do not use Active Dis tance Assist DISTRONIC in
th ese situations.

Function of Parking Assist PARKTRONIC
Parking Assist PARKTRONI Cis an electronic
parkin gassi stance sy stem with ultrasound. It
monitors the area around your vehicle using six
sensors 1inthe front bumper and six sensors
in there ar bumper. Parking Assist PARKTRONI C
indicates visuall yand audibl yth e dis tance
between your vehicle and an object.
Pa rking Assist PARKTRONI Cis on lyan aid. It is
not a substitute for paying attention to your sur‐
ro undings. You are alw aysre sponsible for safe
maneu vering, pa rking and exiting a parking
space. Make sure that there are no persons, ani‐ mals or objects in
the maneuvering area while
maneuvering and parking in/exiting parking
spaces.
In thest andard setting, an intermitte ntwa rning
to ne sounds from a di stance of appr oximately
1. 0 ft (0.3 m) toan obs tacle. A continuous tone
sounds from a di stance of appr oximately 0.7 ft
(0.2 m). You can set thewa rning tone in the mul‐
timedia sy stem so that it will sound earlier at a
grea ter dis tance of appr oximately 3.3 ft(1.0 m)

tion
Pa ssive side impact pr otection is an additional
Pa rking Assist PARKTRONI Cfunction whic h
wa rnsth e driver about obs tacles at the side of
th eve hicle. A warning is issued when obs tacles
are de tected between the front and rear de tec‐
tion range. In order for an object tobe de tected,
th e sensors in the front and rear bumper must
de tect the object while you are driving past it.
During the parking procedure or maneuvering,
objects are de tected as theve hicle drives past.
If yo usteer in the direction of a de tected obs ta‐
cle and there is a risk of a lateral collision, a
wa rning is issued. The lateral segments light up
orange or red, depending on the dis tance tothe

Ve hicles with Blind Spot Assis t:Dr ivers can
also be warned of any crossing traf fic when
back ing out of a parking space. If a critical situa‐
tion is de tected, a warning symbol appears on
th e camera image of the multimedia sy stem. If
th e driver does not respond tothewa rning, the
ve hicle&#39;s brakes can be applied automaticall y.To
do this, the function uses thera dar sensors in
th e bumper. The area adjacent totheve hicle is
continually monitored.
If th era dar sensors are obstructed byvehicles
or other objects, de tection is not possible.
The Cross Traf fic Alert function is acti veunder

ATTENTION ASSIST
Fu nction of ATTENTION ASSIST
AT TENTION ASSIST assists you on long, mon oto‐
nous journe ys, e.g. on free ways and trunk roads.
If AT TENTION ASSIST de tects indicators of fati‐
gue or increasing lapses in concentration on the
part of the driver, it suggests taking a brea k.
AT TENTION ASSIST is only an aid. It cann ot
alw ays de tect fatigue or lapses in concentration
until too late. The sy stem is not a substitute for a
we ll-res ted and attentive driver. On long jour‐
ne ys,tak ere gular breaks in good time that allow
fo r ade quate recuperation.
Yo u can choose between two settings.
RStandard: normal sy stem sensitivity
RSensitive: higher system sensitivity. The
driver is warned earlier and the attention
le ve l de tected byATTENTION ASSIST is adap‐
te d accordingly.
If dr owsiness or inc reasing lapses in concentra‐

Blind Spot Assist uses two lateral,rear-facing
ra dar sensors tomonitor the area up to130ft
(40 m) behind your vehicle and 10ft(3 m)
directly next to yourvehicle.
If a vehicle is de tected at speeds ab ove appr ox‐
imately 8 mph (12 km/h) and this vehicle subse‐
qu ent lyenters the monitoring range di rectly next
to yo urvehicle, thewa rning lamp in the outside
mir ror lights up red.
If a vehicle is de tected close to yourvehicle in
th e lateral monitoring range and youswit chon
th e turn signal indicator in the cor responding
direction, a warning tone sounds once. The red
wa rning lamp in the outside mir rorflashes. If the
turn signal indica torre mains on, all other de tec‐
te dve hicles are indicated only bytheflashing of
th ere dwa rning lamp.

If Ac tive Blind Spot Assi stdetects a risk of a side
impact in the monitoring range, a cours e-cor‐
re cting brake application is car ried out. This is
designed tohelp youav oid a collision.
The course-cor recting brake application is availa‐
ble in the speed range between appr oximately
20 mph (30 km/h) and 125mp h (200 km/h).
