the multifunction camera or the camera is fog-
ged up, damaged or obscured.
= If road signs are hard to detect, e.g. due to

= If signs are ambiguous, e.g. road signs in road-

DYNAMIC SELECT switch
Function of the DYNAMIC SELECT switch

dangers.\bDepending on the engine and equipment, the vehicle has diMerent drive programs.
Use the DYNAMIC SELECT switch to change
between the following drive programs.
The drive program selected appears on the instru- ment display.
Individual
= Individual settings
B Sport+
= Particularly sporty driving
= Emphasizes the vehicle\bs own oversteer and
understeer characteristics for an even more
active driving style
= Suitable only for good road conditions, a dry
surface and a clear stretch of road
C Sport
= Continues to oMer stability but with a sporty
setup
= Enables a sporty driver to adopt a more active
driving style
= Suitable only for good road conditions, a dry
surface and a clear stretch of road
A Comfort
= Comfortable and economical driving
= Balance between traction and stability=Recommended for all road conditions
 Eco
= Particularly economical driving
= Balance between traction and stability
= Recommended for all road conditions
F Offroad
= Intervenes later if there is oversteer or under-
steer, thus improving traction
= Suitable for easily negotiable oM-road terrain,
such as dirt tracks, gravel or sandy surfaces
= Not suitable for use on public roads
G Offroad+
= Intervenes later if there is oversteer or under-
steer, thus improving traction
= Suitable for diPcult terrain, such as steep
and/or uneven terrain or for driving on rocky
terrain

settings in the drive programs 
and A are designed for stability. Therefore,
choose one of these drive programs espe- cially when transporting roof loads, in trailer
operation and when the vehicle is fully loaded
or fully occupied.
Depending on the drive program, the following systems will change their characteristics:
= Drive
- Engine and transmission management
- Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC
= ESP n
= Vehicles with AIR BODY CONTROL or
DYNAMIC BODY CONTROL: suspension
= Electric power steering
Selecting the drive programPush DYNAMIC SELECT switch 1 forwards or
backwards.
The drive program selected will appear on the

Select Individual Configuration .Select and set a category.
Switching the reset display on or oM
Switch Request at Start on or oM.
Function on: the next time the vehicle is started a
prompt appears asking whether the last active
drive program should be restored. If the ECO start/stop function was deactivated, an additionalprompt appears asking if the function shouldremain deactivated.
\bThe prompt only appears if the previously
active settings deviate from the standard set-
tings.
Function oM: the next time the vehicle is started
the A drive program is set automatically. The

ECO start/stop function is activated automati-
cally.\bThis function must be activated for each user
proNle separately. Only when this function is
activated will the drive program and ECO
start/stop setting for the previous journey be
saved for the respective user proNle.

Use the OMroad Score only for oM-road driving
and not on public roads. When choosing the route, take into account the vehicle characteris-tics, the ground conditions and your driving skills.
Do not let the system distract you from what is
happening on the route.
Select Offroad Score .
A menu appears. You can start a new trip.
Further functions are available in the lower menu
bar:
= Display the current trip via the route symbol.
= Display a list of all notes for the current trip
using the list icon.
In the list, a note is displayed with a time stamp, the number of points currently ach-
ieved and the note text.
= Display the ranking by clicking on the symbol
for the winner\bs podium.

The ranking list shows the following informa-
tion:
- ProNle name and proNle picture (if availa-
ble)
- The number of points obtained
- Date and time of the completed trip
- The places for gold, silver and bronze
Starting or ending a new trip
The "Start new trip" function is available when the
vehicle is stationary and the engine is running.Select Start new trip .
The display "Trip and tips" appears.
The following information is displayed: = the vehicle inclination in longitudinal direc-
tion in percent (%)
= the lateral inclination of the vehicle in
degrees (°)
= the currently achieved score for the ongo-
ing trip
= a tip for the upcoming driving maneuverTo stop the display: select End trip .
An evaluation of the trip is displayed. It shows
the achieved score and a message, for exam-
ple Great job! .
Automatic transmission
DIRECT SELECT lever

qFunction of the DIRECT SELECT lever
&WARNING Risk of accident due to incor-
rect gearshising
If the engine speed is higher than the idle
speed and you engage the transmission posi-
tion [ or ^, the vehicle may accelerate
sharply.
If you engage the transmission position
[ or ^ when the vehicle is at a stand-
still, always depress the brake pedal
Nrmly and do not accelerate at the same
time.&WARNING Risk of accident and injury due
to children les unattended in the vehicle
If you leave children unattended in the vehicle,
they could, in particular:
= open doors, thereby endangering other
persons or road users.
= get out and be struck by oncoming traPc.
= operate vehicle equipment and become
trapped, for example.
In addition, the children could also set the
vehicle in motion by, for example:
= releasing the parking brake.
= changing the gearbox position.
= starting the vehicle.
Never leave children unattended in the
vehicle.When leaving the vehicle, always take the key with you and lock the vehicle.Keep the key out of reach of children.172Driving and parking

Use the DIRECT SELECT lever to switch the trans-
mission position. The current transmission posi-
tion will be shown on the instrument display.]Park position^Reverse gear\\Neutral[Drive position
q Engaging reverse gear RDepress the brake pedal and push the DIRECT
SELECT lever upwards past the Nrst point of
resistance.

q Engaging neutral N
Depress the brake pedal and push the DIRECT
SELECT lever up or down to the Nrst point of
resistance.\bTo shis into neutral \\ with the vehicle
switched on, push the selector lever up or
down for several seconds to the Nrst point of
resistance.
Subsequently releasing the brake pedal will allow
you to move the vehicle freely, e.g. to push it or
tow it away.
Proceed as follows if you want the automatic transmission to remain in neutral \\ even if the
vehicle is switched oM or the driver\bs door is
opened:
Depress the brake pedal and engage neutral
\\ when the car is stationary.Release the brake pedal.Switch oM the vehicle.\bIf you then exit the vehicle leaving the key in
the vehicle, the automatic transmission
remains in neutral \\.

qEngaging park position P
*NOTE Damage due to engaging park posi-
tion ] while the vehicle is rolling
If you shis the transmission into park position
] while the vehicle is rolling, the transmis-
sion may be damaged.
If the vehicle is rolling, do not open a
door.Only engage park position ] when the
vehicle is stationary.Observe the notes on parking the vehicle
(  page 178).Depress the brake pedal until the vehicle
comes to a standstill.When the vehicle is stationary, press button ] .
When the transmission position display shows
] , the park position is engaged. If the trans-Driving and parking173

mission position display ] does not appear,
apply the parking brake and secure the vehicle
to prevent it from rolling away.\bDepending on the situation, it may take a short time until ] is engaged. Therefore,
always pay attention to the transmission posi-
tion display.
Park position ] will be engaged automatically if
one of the following conditions is met:
= You switch the stationary vehicle oM in trans-
mission position [ or ^.
= You open the driver\bs door when the vehicle is
stationary in transmission position [ or ^.
= When the vehicle is rolling, you switch if oM in
transmission position [ or ^ and bring it to
a standstill.
= When the vehicle is rolling, you shis to trans-
mission position \\, bring the vehicle to a
standstill and open the driver\bs door when the
vehicle is stationary.
= Engaging park position ] automatically is
required by the vehicle.
\bTo maneuver with an open driver\bs door, open
the driver\bs door while the vehicle is station-
ary and engage transmission position [ or
^ again.

qEngaging drive position D
Depress the brake pedal and push the DIRECT
SELECT lever down past the Nrst point of
resistance.
When the automatic transmission is in transmis-
sion position [, it will shis gears automatically.
This depends, among other things, on the follow- ing factors:
= The selected drive program
= The position of the accelerator pedal
= The driving speed
Manual gearshising

You could otherwise fail to recognize
dangers.
When the automatic transmission is shised to
position [, you can manually shis it with the
steering wheel paddle shiser. If permitted, the
automatic transmission will shis to a higher or
lower gear depending on the steering wheel pad- dle shiser being pulled.
You have two options for manually shising the
automatic transmission:
= Temporary setting
= Permanent setting
The gears will shis automatically when manual
shising is deactivated.
Temporary setting:

To activate: pull steering wheel paddle shiser
1 or 2.
Manual shising will be activated for a short
time. The transmission position display will
show c and the current gear.\bHow long manual shising stays activated
depends on various factors.
Manual shising can be deactivated automati-
cally in the following cases:
= When the drive program is changed
= When the vehicle is restarted
= When transmission position [ is engaged
again
= Driving styleTo shis up: pull steering wheel paddle shiser
2 .To shis down: pull steering wheel paddle
shiser 1 .To deactivate: pull and hold steering wheel
paddle shiser 2 .
The transmission position display will show
[ .Permanent setting: Change to drive program ( page 170).Select drive setting c ( page 170).
(earshis recommendation
The gearshis recommendation assists you in
adopting an economical driving style.
If gearshis recommendation 1 appears next
to the transmission position display, shis to
the recommended gear.Using kickdownMaximum acceleration: depress the accelera-
tor pedal beyond the point of resistance.
To protect against engine overrev, the automatic
transmission will shis up to the next gear when
maximum engine speed has been reached.
Glide mode function
*NOTE Mercedes-AMG vehiclesObserve the notes in the Supplement.
You could otherwise fail to recognize
dangers.
With an anticipatory driving style, Glide mode
helps you to reduce fuel consumption.
Glide mode is characterised by the following: = The combustion engine is disconnected from
the drivetrain and continues to run in neutral.
= The transmission position display [ is shown
in green.

=Vehicles with 48 V on-board electrical system:
The combustion engine can be switched oM.
All of the vehicle functions remain active.
Glide mode is activated if the following conditions
are met:
= Drive program  is selected.
= The speed is within a suitable range.
= The road\bs course is suitable, e.g. no steep
uphill or downhill inclines or tight bends.
= You do not depress the accelerator or brake
pedal (except for light brake applications).\bGlide mode can also be activated if you have
selected the "Eco" setting for the drive in the drive program .
Glide mode will be deactivated again if one of the
conditions is no longer met.
Glide mode can also be prevented by the following
parameters:
= Incline
= Downhill gradient
= Temperature
=Height
= Speed
= Operating status of the engine
= TraPc situation
Function of 4MATIC
4MATIC ensures that all four wheels are driven.
Together with ESP n
and 4ETS, 4MATIC improves
the traction of your vehicle whenever a driven wheel spins due to insuPcient traction.
If you fail to adapt your driving style, 4MATIC can neither reduce the risk of an accident nor overridethe laws of physics. 4MATIC cannot take accountof road, weather and traPc conditions. 4MATIC is
only an aid. You are responsible especially for
maintaining a safe distance from the vehicle in front, for vehicle speed, for braking in good time
and for staying in lane.
\bIn wintry road conditions, the maximum eMect
of 4MATIC can be achieved only if you use
winter tires (M\fS tires), with snow chains if
necessary.Refueling
Refueling the vehicle
&WARNING Risk of Nre or explosion from
fuel
Fuels are highly Oammable.
Fire, open Oames, smoking and creating
sparks must be avoided.Before refueling, switch oM the vehicle
and, if installed, the stationary heater,
and leave them switched oM during refu-
eling.&WARNING Risk of injury from fuels
Fuels are poisonous and hazardous to your
health.
Do not swallow fuel or let it come into
contact with skin, eyes or clothing.Do not inhale fuel vapor.Keep children away from fuel.176Driving and parking

Keep doors and windows closed during
the refueling process.
If you or other people come into contact with
fuel, observe the following:
Immediately rinse fuel oM your skin with
soap and water.If fuel comes into contact with your eyes, immediately rinse them thoroughly with
clean water. Seek medical attention
immediately.If you swallow fuel, seek medical atten-
tion immediately. Do not induce vomit-
ing.Change immediately out of clothing that has come into contact with fuel.&WARNING Risk of Nre and explosion due
to electrostatic charge
Electrostatic charge can ignite fuel vapor.
Before you open the fuel Nller cap or
take hold of the pump nozzle, touch the metallic vehicle body.To avoid creating another electrostatic
charge, do not get into the vehicle again
during the refueling process.*NOTE Damage caused by the wrong fuel
Vehicles with a gasoline engine:
Even small amounts of the wrong fuel could
result in damage to the fuel system, the
engine and the emission control system.
Only refuel with low-sulfur spark-ignition
engine fuel.
This fuel may contain up to 10% ethanol. Your vehicle is suitable for use with E10 fuel.
Never refuel with one of the following fuels: = Diesel
= Gasoline with more than 10% ethanol by
volume, e.g. E15, E85, E100
= Gasoline with more than 3% methanol by
volume, e.g. M15, M30, M85, M100
= Gasoline with additives containing metal
If you have accidentally refueled with the
wrong fuel:Do not switch on the vehicle.Consult a qualiNed specialist workshop.*NOTE Do not use diesel to refuel vehicles
with a gasoline engine
If you have accidentally refueled with the
wrong fuel:
= Do not switch on the vehicle. Otherwise
fuel can enter the engine.
Even small amounts of the wrong fuel
could result in damage to the fuel system and the engine. The repair costs are high.
Consult a qualiNed specialist workshop.Have the fuel tank and fuel lines drained

Requirements
= The vehicle is unlocked.
Observe the notes on service Ouids and fuel.
Only refuel with fuel that has at least the octane rating speciNed in the information label in the fuel
Nller Oap. Otherwise, engine output may be
reduced and fuel consumption increased.

Parking the vehicle

caused by an insuPciently secured vehi-
cle rolling away
If the vehicle is not securely parked suP-
ciently, it can roll away in an uncontrolled way
even at a slight downhill gradient.
