When using a CCS (Combined Charging Sys-
t em) charging cable to charge with direct cur-
rent at a combo vehicle socket, both vehicle
socket connections 1 and 2 are used for
charging.
Charging options for the high-voltage battery
(mode 2, 3 or 4): = Char

ging through recuperation while the vehi-
cle is in motion
= Charging with alternating current when sta-
tionary:
- at a mains socket (mode 2)
- at a wallbox or charging station (mode 3)
= Charging with direct current when stationary:
- at a rapid charging station (mode 4)
Depending on the country-speciNc vehicle equip-
ment and your vehicle's charging cable, single
phase AC charging is also possible.
Observe the diMerent grid requirements of your
current location when charging. Only use charging
cables which conform to the grid requirements.
Consult a qualiNed electrician or your local grid
operator if you have any questions. It is recommended that you charge the high-volt-
ag

e battery at a wallbox or charging station due to
the improved charging performance and better
charging ePciency oMered.
Stowing the charging cable
Always stow the vehicle charging cable in the
charging cable bag provided and secure it in the
boot or load compartment of your vehicle.
Otherwise, the charging cable is not suPciently
secured.
System limits
The power output of the high-voltage battery may
be impaired by the following:
= High or low outside temperatures
= Electrical auxiliary consumers in the vehicle
being switched on, e.g. operating the air con-
ditioning system
= Extended periods without charging
The charging time of the high-voltage battery may
be increased by the following: = High or low outside temperatures
= Extended periods without charging =
The maximum a vailable charge current of the
charging facility
= The settings of the charging process in the

harging cables for their suitability for high-
voltage charging of your vehicle. 
Never use a damaged charging cable. 
Do not use:
= Ext
ension cables
= Extension reels
= Multiple sockets 
Never use socket adapters to connect

he charging cable to the mains socket.
The only exception being if the adapter
has been tested and approved by the
manufacturer for charging the high-volt-
age battery of an electric vehicle. 
Observe the safety notes in the operat-
ing ins
tructions for the socket adapter. Only the following charging cables may be used:
= The c

harging cable supplied with the vehicle. =
A c
harging cable that has been approved for
the vehicle.
The charging process can vary depending on the
power supply equipment. The charging times
when charging the high-voltage battery at the
mains socket are considerably longer than when
charging at a wallbox or charging station.
When doing so, always observe the local informa-
tion.
Do not leave the charging cable controls hanging
loose from a mains socket.
Do not lis the controls by the following compo-
nent parts:
= the charging cable connector
= the mains plug
When charging, protect the charging cable control
element from excessive heat such as direct sun-
light. Otherwise, the charging process may be

an electric vehicle.
= Never use damaged charging cables.

Observe the on-site operator's instructions for the
charging station.
The amount of energy dispensed for the charging
process, shown by the charging station, may be
higher than the amount of energy actually absor-
bed by the high-voltage battery. This is the result
of diMerent levels of charging losses and is descri-
bed as recharge ePciency. Charging losses occur,
for example, due to heat that builds up when the vehicle is charging or from auxiliary consumers

recharge ePciency can be obtained at a qualiNed

During the charging process, the high-voltage
on-boar
d electrical system is under high volt-
age. 
Do not perform any maintenance work
dur

ing the charging process. Most charging stations must be activated before
t

he charging process, e.g. using an RFID card.
Observe the on-site operator's instructions for the
charging station. The charging cable for the vehicle must not be
long
er than 30 m due to the legal requirements in
some countries. This is to prevent the interfer-
ence of signals being received by radio communi-
cation devices in the vehicle or in close proximity
to the charging station. Be aware that parts of the
charging cable may be routed underground. If in
doubt, ask the charging station operator if this is
the case before charging the high-voltage battery.

Check the setting of the maximum
c harge current using the charging capa-
city shown in the Instrument Display. Before charging at a mains socket, have the maxi-
mum per

missible charging current for the relevant
mains socket or the building inspected by a quali-
Ned electrician. The charging cable supplied is set
to a country-speciNc maximum charging current
value. When charging abroad, the maximum value
may exceed the permitted value for that country.
When abroad, observe the country-speciNc laws
when charging. If you have questions concerning
setting the charging current or if there is a mal-
function, please contact a qualiNed specialist
workshop.

If the exact value of the maximum permissible

harging current cannot be set, select the next
smaller adjustable value.

Insert the charging cable connector into vehi-
cle soc
ket connection 8 to the stop. If the
wallbox/charging station is not equipped with
a charging cable, insert the plug of the vehi-
cle's charging cable into the wallbox/charging
station socket to the stop.
Make sure that the charging cable is not taut
when inserted. The = indicat

or lamp 4 and status dis-
play 3 Oash orange and, as soon as the high-
voltage battery is charged, green.
% When the charging sequence for the ambient
lighting is activ
ated, the ambient lighting lights
up for approximately 30 seconds as with the
= indicator lamp 4 ( page 135).
When the charging cable is connected to the vehi-
cle, t
he vehicle cannot be started or moved.
At the start of the charging process, the charge
level display is shown in the Instrument Display
with a charging prediction. The charging predic-
tion either refers to the predicted charge level at
the set departure time, or the time at which the
high-voltage battery will be fully charged.
% When the vehicle is switched on, a lightning
