Safely transporting children in the vehicle
Always observe when children are travelling in the
v ehicle %
Also strictly observe the safety notes for the
speciNc situation. In t

his way you can recog-
nise potential risks and avoid dangers if chil-
dren are travelling in the vehicle
(  page 59).
Be diligent
Bear in mind t
hat negligence when securing a
child in the child restraint system may have seri-
ous consequences. Always be diligent in securing
a child carefully before every journey.
Never allow babies and children to travel sitting
on the lap of another vehicle occupant.
To improve protection for children younger than
12 years old or under 1.50 m in height,
Mercedes-Benz recommends you observe the fol-
lowing information:
= Always secure the child in a child restraint sys-
tem suitable for this Mercedes-Benz vehicle.
= The child restraint system must be appropriate
to the age, weight and size of the child. =
The v
ehicle seat must be suitable for Ntting a
child restraint system (  page 62).
Accident statistics show that children secured on
the rear seats are generally safer than children
secured on the front seats. For this reason,
Mercedes-Benz strongly advises that you Nt a
child restraint system to a rear seat.
The generic term child restraint system
The generic term child restraint system is used in
this Owner's Manual. A child restraint system is,
for example:
= a baby car seat
= a rearward-facing child seat
= a forward-facing child seat
= a child booster seat with a backrest and seat
belt guide
Mercedes-Benz recommends using a child
booster seat with a backrest.
The child restraint system must be appropriate to
the age, weight and size of the child. Observe laws and legal requirements
Alw
ays observe the legal requirements when
using a child restraint system in the vehicle.
Make sure that the child restraint system is
approved in accordance with the valid test speciN-
cations and guidelines. Further information can
be obtained at a qualiNed specialist workshop.
Mercedes-Benz recommends that you use a
Mercedes-Benz Service Centre for this purpose.
Only use approved child restraint systems
Only child restraint systems that meet the follow-
ing UNECE standards are permitted for use in the
vehicle:
= UN-R44
= UN-R129 (i-Size child restraint systems)

the child restraint system (  page 63).58

Detecting risks, avoiding danger
Securing systems for child restraint systems in
t he vehicle
Only use the following securing systems for child
restraint systems:
= the ISOFIX or i-Size securing rings
= the vehicle's seat belt system
= the Top Tether anchorages
Fitting an ISOFIX or an i-Size child restraint sys-
tem is preferred.
Simply attaching to the securing rings on the vehi-
cle can reduce the risk of Ntting the child restraint
system incorrectly.
When securing a child with the integrated seat
belt of the ISOFIX or i-Size child restraint system,
always comply with the permissible gross weight
for the child and child restraint system
( page 67).
Advantage of a rearward-facing child restraint sys-
tem
It is preferable to transport a baby or a small child
in a suitable rearward-facing child restraint sys- tem. In this case, the child sits in the opposite
dir
ection to the direction of travel and faces back-
wards.
Babies and small children have comparatively
weak neck muscles in relation to the size and
weight of their head. The risk of injury to the cer-
vical spine during an accident can be reduced in a
rearward-facing child restraint system.

or not secured, it can become detached.
The child cannot then be protected or
restrained as intended.
The unused child restraint system can be
become detached and strike vehicle occu-
pants. 
Always comply with the manufacturer's
ins
tallation instructions for the child

- Fitting the ISOFIX or i-Size child restraint

the seat belt on the rear seat
( page 73).
- Securing the child restraint system with
the seat belt on the front passenger seat
(  page 76). Observe the speciNc
instructions for the rearward-facing and
forward-facing child restraint systems
(  page 75).
If the front passenger seat is occupied,
ensure, both before and during the jour-
ney, that the status of the front passenger
airbag is correct for the current situation
(  page 53). =

ve the warning labels in the vehicle inte-
rior and on the child restraint system.

Avoid direct sunlight

If the child restraint system is exposed to

ect sunlight or heat, parts could heat up.
Children could suMer burns from these parts,
particularly on metallic parts of the child
restraint system. 
Always make sure that the child restraint
sy
stem is not exposed to direct sunlight.

If the child restraint system has been

xposed to direct sunlight, allow it to
cool before securing a child into it. 
Never leave children unattended in the

ehicle. Observe when stopping or parking

they could, in particular:
= open doors, thereby endangering other
persons or road users.
= get out and be struck by oncoming traPc.
= operate vehicle equipment and become

vehicle in motion by, for example:
= releasing the parking brake.
= changing the transmission position.
= starting the vehicle. 
Never leave children unattended in the

When leaving the vehicle, always take the

Keep the vehicle key out of the reach of

These child restraint systems must also be
secured using Top Tether or support points.
= Semi-Universal: child restraint systems in the
"Semi-Universal" category may only be used if
the vehicle and vehicle seat are listed in the
child restraint system manufacturer's vehicle
model list.
= Vehicle-speciNc: child restraint systems in the
vehicle-speciNc category may only be used if
the vehicle and vehicle seat are listed in the
child restraint system manufacturer's vehicle
