The vehicle will be fully unlocked if it had previ-
ously been fully unlocked. If only the driver's
door had been previously unlocked, only the
door which has been opened from the inside is
unlocked.
Automatic locking feature X
To deactivate: press and hold button C for
approximately five seconds until a tone
sounds. X
To activate: press and hold button D for
approximately five seconds until a tone
sounds.
If you press one of the two buttons and do not
hear a tone, the relevant setting has already
been selected.
The vehicle is locked automatically when the
ignition is switched on and the wheels are turn-
ing.
You could therefore be locked out if: R
the vehicle is being pushed R
the vehicle is being towed R
the vehicle is being tested on a dynamometer.
You can activate and deactivate the automatic
locking mechanism via the multimedia system
(see the Digital Operator's Manual).
Locking/unlocking the driver's door
with the mechanical key
i If you want to centrally lock the vehicle using
the mechanical key, begin by pressing the
locking button for the interior locking mech-
anism while the driver's door is open. Then
lock the driver's door using the mechanical
key. X
Insert the mechanical key into opening C in
the protective cap. X
Pull and hold the door handle. X
Pull the protective cap on the mechanical key
as straight as possible away from the vehicle
until it releases. X
Release the door handle.
X
To lock: turn the mechanical key clockwise as
far as it will go to position G .X
To unlock: turn the mechanical key counter-
clockwise as far as it will go to position G .
If you use the mechanical key to unlock and
open the driver's door, the anti-theft alarm sys-
tem will be triggered. Switch off the alarm
( Y
page 77).

G WARNING
Combustion engines emit poisonous exhaust
gases such as carbon monoxide. If the tailgate
is open when the engine is running, particu-

front wheel housing You must remove the cover of the front wheel
housing before you can change the front turn

stops using a suitable object.
Cover D is released. X
Fold cover D up. X
To install: insert cover D into the left, right
and two lower catches. X

Completely insert the fille r neck of the fuel
pump nozz le into the tank, hook in plac e and
refuel. X

Do not add any more fuel after the pump stops
filli ng for the first time. Otherwise, fuel may leak
out.
Closing the fuel filler flap X
Replac e the cap on the fille r neck and turn
clock wise unt il it engages audibly.X
Close the fuel fille r flap. Close the fuel filler flap before locking the vehi-
cle.
If you are driving wit h the fuel filler cap open, the

Use of engine oils and oil filters that have
not been expressly approved for the service
system R
Replacement of engine oil and oil filter after
the replacement interval specified by the
service system has expired R
Use of engine oil additives
! Do not add too much oil. adding too much
engine oil can result in damage to the engine
or to the catalytic converter. Have excess
engine oil siphoned off.
Add engine oil (example) X
Turn cap C counter-clockwise and remove it.X
Add engine oil.
If the oil level is at or below the MIN mark on
the oil dipstick, add 1.1 US qt (1.0 l) of engine
oil. X
Replace cap C on the filler neck and tighten
clockwise.
Ensure that the cap locks into place securely. X
Check the oil level again with the oil dipstick
( Y
page 320).

Important safety notes
G WARNING
Certain components in the engine compart-
ment, such as the engine, radiator and parts
of the exhaust system, can become very hot. Working in the engine compartment poses a
risk of injury.
Where possible, let the engine cool down and
touch only the components described in the
following.
G WARNING
The engine compartment contains moving
components. Certain components, such as
the radiator fan, may continue to run or start
again suddenly when the ignition is off. There
is a risk of injury.
If you need to do any work inside the engine
compartment: R
switch off the ignition R
never reach into the area where there is a
risk of danger from moving components,
such as the fan rotation area R
remove jewelry and watches R
keep items of clothing and hair, for exam-
ple, away from moving parts
G WARNING
The cooling system is pressurized, particularly
when the motor is warm. If you open the cap,
you could be scalded if hot coolant sprays out.
There is a risk of injury.
Let the engine cool down before you open the
cap. Wear gloves and eye protection. Slowly
open the cap to relieve pressure.
G WARNING
Opening the hood when the engine is over-
heated or when there is a fire in the engine
compartment could expose you to hot gases
or other service products. There is a risk of
injury.
Let an overheated engine cool down before
opening the hood. If there is a fire in the
engine compartment, keep the hood closed

Only check the coolant level when the vehicle
is on a level surface and the engine has cooled

The brackets for the screw-in towing eye are
located in the bumpers. They are at the rear and
at the front, under covers C .X
Remove the towing eye from the retainer
( Y
page 333). X
Mercedes-AMG vehicles: use a suitable
object, e.g. a screwdriver, to pry off cover C
on the front bumper from underneath. Take
the cover from the opening, but do not
remove it.
Press the mark on cover C on the rear
bumper inward and remove. X
All other vehicles: press the mark on
cover C inward and remove. X
Screw in the towing eye clockwise as far as it
will go and tighten it.
Vehicles with a trailer tow hitch do not have a
bracket for the screw-in towing eye at the back.
Connect the towbar to the trailer tow hitch
( Y
page 216).
Removing the towing eye X
Unscrew and remove the towing eye. X
Attach cover C to the bumper and press until
it engages.
Towing a vehicle with both axles on
the ground The automatic transmission automatically shifts
to position ] when you open the driver's or
front-passenger door or when you remove the
SmartKey from the ignition lock. It is essential to
observe the following steps to ensure that the
automatic transmission remains in position \\
during towing. X
Make sure that the vehicle is stationary. X
Turn the SmartKey to position H in the igni-
tion lock. X
Depress and hold the brake pedal. X
Shift the automatic transmission to position
\\ . X
Leave the SmartKey in position H in the igni-
tion lock. X
Release the brake pedal. X
Release the electric parking brake. X
Switch on the hazard warning lamps
( Y
page 114).
In order to signal a change of direction when
towing the vehicle with the hazard warning
lamps switched on, use the combination switch
as usual. In this case, only the indicator lamps
for the direction of travel flash. After resetting
the combination switch, the hazard warning
