in direct sunlight or in greatly varying light

dirty, misted up, damaged or co vered.
R Ifth era dar sensors are dirty or co vered.
R In multi-s tore y car par ksor on roads with
steep uphill or downhill gradients.
R Ifth ere are nar row vehicles in front, such as
bicycles or mo torc yc les.
In addition, on slippery roads, braking or acceler-
ating can cause one or se veral wheels tolose
traction and theve hicle could then skid.

If a change in the speed limit of 20 km/h or more
is de tected and automatic adoption of speed lim-
its is activated, the new speed limit is automati-
cally adop ted as the stored speed (/ page 283).The driven speed is adjusted when
theve hicle is
le ve l with the tra1c sign at the latest. In the case
of signs indicating entry into an urban area, the
speed is adap ted according tothe speed permit-
te d within the urban area. The speed limit display
in the driver's display is alw ays updated when the
ve hicle is le vel with the tra1c sign.
If yo u are driving on German mo torw ays and there
is no speed limit, the system uses the speed
stored for a str etch ofroad with no speed limit as
th e set speed. If you do not alter the stored speed
on a str etch ofroad with no speed limit, there c-
ommended speed of 130 km/h is adop ted.
If Ac tive Distance Assist DISTRONIC has been put
into passive mode bypressing the accelerator
pedal, only speed limits which are higher than the
set speed are adop ted.
The maximum permissible speed does not take
th ero ad condition and cur rent we ather and tra1c
conditions into account. Adjust your speed
accordingl y,when necessar y.

The system limits of Tra1c Sign Assist apply to
th e de tection of tra1c signs (/ page 294).
Speed limits below 20 km/h are not automatical ly
adop tedby the system as the stored speed. Tem-
porary speed restrictions (e.g. for a cer tain time
or due towe ather conditions) cann otbe proper ly
de tected bythe system. The maximum permissi-
ble speed applying toave hicle with a trailer is not
de tected bythe system.

When Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC is activa-
te d, theve hicle speed will be adap ted accordingly
to thero ute events ahead. Depending on the drive
prog ram selected, theve hicle neg otiates a route
ev ent ahead in a fuel-saving, comfor table or
dynamic manner. When thero ute event has been
passed, theve hicle accelerates again tothe
stored speed. The set distance totheve hicle in
front, vehicles de tected ahead and speed restric-
tions ahead are take n into account.
Ro ute-based speed adap tation can be activa ted in
th e multimedia system (/ page 283).
The following route events are take n into account:
R Bends
R Roundabouts
R T-junctions
R Turns and exits R
Tra1c jams ahead (only with Live Tra1c )
Also, the speed is reduced if the turn signal indi-
cator is switched on and one of thefo llowing sit-
uations is de tected:
R Turning o. at junctions
R Driving on slowing-down lanes
R Driving on lanes adjacent toslowing-down
lanes
The driver is responsible forch oosing theright
speed and observing other road users. This
applies in particular tojunctions, roundabouts and
tra1c lights, as route-based speed adap tation
does not brake theve hicle toa standstill.
If a cor responding route event is de tected while
ro ute guidance is active, the /rst speed adjust-
ment is car ried out automaticall y.Ifth e turn signal
indicator is switched on, the selected route is
con/rmed and fur ther speed adjustment is activa-
te d.
Speed adap tation is cancelled in thefo llowing
cases:

In di1cult conditions, the speed selection made
by the system may not alw ays be suitable. This

R unclear roads
R road nar rowing
R varying maximum permissible speeds in indi-
vidual lanes, forex ample at toll stations

R if transport equipment, forex ample a trailer or

Ac tive Stop-and-Go Assist helps you when in traf-
fi c jams on multi-lane roads with separate car ria-
ge wa ys by automatically pulling away within up to
60 seconds and with moderate steering manoeu-
vres. It orients itself using theve hicle in front and
lane markings. Active Stop-and-Go Assist auto-
matically maintains a safe distance from theve hi-
cle in front and vehicles cutting in.
Ac tive Stop-and-Go Assist requires you, as the
driver, tokeep your hands on the steering wheel
at all times so that you are able tointer vene at
any time tocor rect the course of theve hicle and
ke ep it in lane.
Obser vethe no tes on driving systems and your
re sponsibility; you may otherwise failto recognise
dangers (/ page 266). Ac
tive Stop-and-Go Assist activates automatically
when all of thefo llowing conditions are met:
R You are in a tra1c jam on a mo torw ay or high-
speed major road.

R You are tr avelling no faster than 60 km/h.

Ac tive Steering Assist is only available up to a
speed of 210 km/h. The system helps youto stay
in the centre of the lane bymeans of moderate steering inter
ventions. Depending on the speed
driven, Active Steering Assist uses theve hicles
ahead and lane markings as a refere nce.
% Depending on the countr y,in the lo wer speed
ra nge Active Steering Assist can use the sur-
ro unding tra1c as a refere nce. If necessar y,
Ac tive Steering Assist can then also pr ovide
assistance when driving outside the centre of
th e lane.
If th e de tection of lane markings and vehicles
ahead is impaired, Active Steering Assist switches
to passive mode. The system pr ovides no support

The driver is requ ired tokeep their hands on the
stee ring wheel at all times and be able tointer-
ve ne at any time tocor rect the course of theve hi-
cle and keep it in lane. The driver must expect a
ch ange from active topassive mode or vice versa
at any time. If
th e system de tects that the driver has not
steered theve hicle for a considerable period of time or has
remo vedth eir hands from the steering
wheel, an optical warning is given /rst. Display 1
appears in the driver's displa y.Ifth e driver still
does not steer theve hicle, or gives no con/rma-
tion tothe system, a warning tone sounds in addi-
tion tothe visual warning message.
If th e driver does not react tothis wa rning for a
considerable period, an emer gency stop is initi-
ated (/ page 286).
The warning is not issued or is stopped as soon as
th e system de tects that the driver has touched
th e steering wheel.
To uch de tection may be limited or inoperative in
th efo llowing situations:
R The driver is wearing glo ves.
R There is a steering wheel co ver on the steering
wheel.
If Ac tive Steering Assist de tects that a system
limit has been reached, a visual warning is issued
and a warning tone sounds.

Ac tive Steering Assist has a limited steering tor-
qu efo r lateral guidance. In some cases, the steer-
ing inter vention is not su1cient tokeep theve hi-
cle in the lane.
The system may be impaired or may not function

R There is poor visibility, e.g. due tosno w,rain,
fo g, heavy spr ay,gr eatly varying light condi-
tions or strong shadow s onthe car riag ewa y.
R There is glare, e.g. from oncoming tra1c,
di re ct sunlight or re0ections.
R Insu1cient road illumination.
R The windscreen is dirty, mis ted up, damaged
or co vered in the vicinity of the camera, e.g.
by a stic ker.
R No, or se veral, unclear lane markings are pres-
ent for one lane, or the markings change
qu ickl y,forex ample, in a construction area or
junctions.
R The lane markings are wornawa y,dark or co v-
ered up, e.g. bydirt or sno w. Driving and parking

short and thus the lane markings cannot be

R There are obs tacles on the lane or projecting

tive Emer gency Stop Assist uses touch sensors
to monitor whe ther the driver holds the steering
wheel and initiates an emer gency stop if neces-
sa ry.
If Ac tive Steering Assist is deactivated, the accel-
erator and brake pedal are monitored as well as
th e steering wheel. A warning is issued when the
stee ring wheel is not being held or when a pedal
is not depre ssed, andtheve hicle is in danger of
leaving the lane. 286

th e system de tects that the driver has not
steered theve hicle for a considerable period of
time or has remo vedth eir hands from the steering
wheel, visual warning 1 is issued. If the driver
still does not steer theve hicle, or gives no con/r-
mation tothe system, a warning tone sounds in
addition tothe visual warning message.

de tection of Active Steering Assist (/ page 284).
Ac tive Emer gency Stop Assist issues thefo llowing
wa rnings in order:
R Display message 1appears in the driver's
displa y. R
In addition todisplay 1awa rning tone
sounds.
R The Beginning emergency stop message
appears in the driver's displa y,a continuous
wa rning tone sounds, theve hicle no lon ger
accelerates, and there is a slight, repeated
te nsioning of the seat belt.
R The vehicle speed is reduced in increments
until it is at a standstill. Sharp brake impulses
are also produced.
Depending on the countr y,a lane change tothe
adjacent right-hand lane is carr ied out, if possible.
% It is only possible tochange across one lane
and only into theright-hand lane, and not
onto the hard shoulder.
When automatic braking is initiated, Active Dis-
ta nce Assist DISTRONIC is deactivated. Depend-
ing on the countr y,the hazard warning light sys-
te m is switched on.
When theve hicle is stationar y,thefo llowing
actions are car ried out:
R The vehicle is secured with the electric par k-
ing brake. R
The vehicle is unloc ked.
R If possible, an emer gency call is placed tothe
Mercedes-Benz emerg ency call centre.
Before automatic braking is initiated, you can can-
cel Active Emer gency Stop Assist bystee ring.
Yo u can cancel the inter vention byActive Emer-
ge ncy Stop Assist aTer automatic braking is initi-
ated byone of thefo llowing actions:
R Accelerating or braking: the emer gency stop is
cancelled, but thewa rning message ,wa rning
to ne and po wer steering remain active
R Steering: po wer-assis ted steering is cancelled,
th ewa rning message andwarning tone remain
active and theve hicle continues tobe braked
% Active Emer gency Stop Assist can initiate an
emer gency stop a maximum of thre e times
within one driving cycle. Subsequentl y,Ac tive
