trailer stabilisation is active above
speeds of 65 km/h.
= Slight swerving is reduced by means of a tar-
geted, individual brake application on one
side.
= In the event of severe swerving, the operating
energy output is also reduced and all wheels
are braked.
ESP n
trailer stabilisation may be impaired or may
not function if:

HOLD function
The HOLD function holds t

he vehicle at a stand-
still without requiring you to depress the brake
pedal, e.g. while waiting in traPc.
The HOLD function is only an aid. The responsibil-
ity for the vehicle safely standing still remains with
the driver.
System limits
The HOLD function is only intended to provide
assistance when driving and is not a suPcient
means of safeguarding the vehicle against rolling
away when stationary.
= The incline must not be greater than 30%. Activating/deactivating the HOLD function &
WARNING Risk of an accident due t
o the
HOLD function being active when you
leave the vehicle
If the vehicle is only braked with the HOLD
function it could, in t
he following situations,
roll away:
= If there is a malfunction in the system or in
the power supply.
= If the HOLD function is deactivated by
depressing the accelerator pedal or brake
pedal, e.g. by a vehicle occupant.
Always secure the vehicle against rolling
a
way before you leave it. Requirements:
= The v

ehicle is stationary.

way. Function of Hill Start Assist
Hill Start Assist holds the vehicle for a short time
when pulling a

way on a hill under the following
conditions:
= The transmission is in position h or k. =
The electr
ic parking brake is released.
This gives you enough time to move your foot
from the brake pedal to the accelerator pedal and
depress it before the vehicle begins to roll away. &
WARNING Risk of accident and injur
y due
to the vehicle rolling away
Aser a shor

aPc in an
emergency braking situation with the following
actions:
= Oashing the brake lamps
= activating the hazard warning lights
( page 173) If the vehicle is braked sharply from speeds above
50 km/h

, the brake lamps Oash rapidly. This pro-
vides traPc travelling behind you with an even
more noticeable warning. ATTENTION ASSIST
Function of ATTENTION ASSIST with microsleep
de
tection
% The sub-function microsleep detection
depends on t

he country and is only available
in conjunction with the driver camera
( page 374).
ATTENTION ASSIST assists you on long, monoto-
nous jour
neys, e.g. on motorways and trunk
roads. If indicators of fatigue or increasing lapses
in concentration on the part of the driver are
detected, the system suggests taking a break.
ATTENTION ASSIST is only an aid. It cannot
always detect fatigue or lapses in concentration in
time. The system is not a substitute for a well-res-
ted and attentive driver. On long journeys, take
regular breaks in good time that allow for ade-
quate recuperation. 270
Driving and parking

You can choose between two settings:
= S
tandard: normal system sensitivity.
= Sensitive: higher system sensitivity. The driver
is warned earlier and the attention level detec-
ted by ATTENTION ASSIST is adapted accord-
ingly.
If fatigue or increasing inattention is detected, the
warning appears in the driver display: ATTEN-
TION ASSIST: Take a break! . you can acknowl-
edge the message and take a break if necessary.
If you do not take a break and ATTENTION ASSIST
continues to detect increasing lapses in concen-
tration, you will be warned again aser a minimum
of 15 minutes. The following information is displayed in the driv-
er's displa
y:
= The length of the journey since the last break
= The attention level determined by ATTENTION
ASSIST:
- The more segments 2 of the circle dis-
played, the higher the detected attention
level.
- Fewer segments 2 are displayed in the
circle as the attention level decreases.
= Microsleep detection 1status:
- Deactivated: display 1 is hidden.
- Activated but not operational: display 1
is grey.
- Activated and operational: display 1 is
green.
If ATTENTION ASSIST is unable to calculate the
attention level and cannot issue a warning, the
System suspended message appears.
If the system, which uses the driver camera,
detects indicators of microsleep, the ATTENTION
ASSIST Microsleep Take a break! warning mes-sage appears in the driver's display and a warning
t one sounds simultaneously. This warning mes-
sage must be conNrmed by Touch Control. It is
recommended that you take a break immediately.
If the driver display shows a warning, a service
area search is oMered in the multimedia system.
You can select a rest area and start navigation to
this rest area.
If you restart the vehicle, ATTENTION ASSIST with
microsleep detection is automatically activated.
The last selected sensitivity level remains stored.
System limits
ATTENTION ASSIST is active in the 60 km/h to
200 km/h speed range.
The microsleep detection function is available at a
speed of 20 km/h and above.
Particularly in the following situations, ATTENTION
ASSIST only functions in a restricted manner and
warnings may be delayed or not occur:
= If you have been driving for less than approx-
imately 30 minutes.
= If the road condition is poor (uneven road sur-
face or potholes). Driving and parking

= If you adopt a sporty driving style (high corner-
ing speeds or high rates of acceleration).
= If the Steering Assist function of Active Dis-
tance Assist DISTRONIC is active.
= If the clock is set to the incorrect time.
= If you change lanes and vary your speed fre-
quently in active driving situations.
= if ESP n
is not available
Microsleep detection also does not function when
the driver camera cannot detect the driver's eyes,
forexample as a result of the following factors:
= The driver's eyes are covered due to the steer-
ing column position, forexample.
= Poor lighting conditions.
= Some types of spectacles or sunglasses.
= The driver's line of vision is outside the driver
camera's Neld of vision.
Also observe any information regarding display
messages that can be displayed in the driver's
display. The tiredness and alertness assessment of
A TTENTION ASSIST with microsleep detection is
reset and restarted when continuing the journey
in the following situations:
= If you switch oM the vehicle.
= If you unfasten your seat belt and open the
driver's door (e.g. to change drivers or take a
break).

Function of the limiter
The limit

er restricts the speed of the vehicle. To
reduce the speed to the set speed, the limiter
applies the brakes automatically.
You can limit the speed as follows:
= Variable: for a short-term speed restriction,
e.g. in built-up areas
= Permanent: for a longer-term speed restric-
tion, e.g. in winter tyre mode
You operate the variable limiter with the les-hand
control group on the steering wheel
( page 276).
You can store any speed above 20 km/h up to the
maximum design speed or up to the set winter
tyre limit. You can also perform settings while the
vehicle is stationary if the vehicle has been star-
ted.
Observe the notes on driving systems and your
responsibility; you may otherwise fail to recognise
dangers ( page 263). 272

Displays in the driver's display
= È (g
rey): variable limiter is selected but not
yet activated.
= È (Oashes grey): variable limiter is tempo-
rarily passive.
= È (green): variable limiter is activated.
A stored speed appears under the È display
and is indicated in the speedometer.
If you depress the accelerator pedal beyond the
pressure point (kickdown), the variable limiter
switches to passive mode. The È passive
message appears in the driver's display and the
È display Oashes.
The variable limiter is reactivated in the following
situations: = If the vehicle speed drops below the stored
speed.
= If the stored speed is called up.
= If you store a new speed. Information on the permanent limiter
If t
he vehicle should never exceed a speciNc
speed (e.g. for driving in winter tyre mode), you
can set this speed with the permanent limiter.
You do this by limiting the speed between
160 km/h and 240 km/h in the multimedia sys-
tem ( page 273).
Shortly before the set speed is reached, it
appears in the driver's display. When you conNrm
the message, display messages no longer appear
until you switch oM the vehicle. The speed will
only be displayed again once the vehicle has been
restarted or if the set speed is changed.
The permanent limiter does not switch to passive
mode even during kickdown and the driven speed
remains below the set speed.

Function of Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC
DIS
TRONIC Active Distance Assist maintains the
set speed when driving freely. If vehicles are
detected ahead, the set distance is maintained, if
necessary until the vehicle comes to a standstill.
The vehicle accelerates or brakes depending on
the distance to the vehicle in front and the set
speed. The speed and distance to the vehicle in
front are set and saved using the steering wheel.
DISTRONIC Active Distance Assist is available in
the speed range from 20 km/h - 210 km/h.
Other features of Active Distance Assist
DISTRONIC: = Adjusts the driving style depending on the
selected drive program (fuel-saving, comforta-
ble or dynamic) ( page 225) Driving and parking

Initiat es acceleration to the stored speed if the
turn signal indicator is switched on to change
to the overtaking lane
= Reacts to stationary vehicles detected in
urban speed ranges (except bicycles and
motorcycles)
= Takes one-sided overtaking restrictions into
account on motorways or on multi-lane roads
with separate carriageways (country-depend-
ent)
Additional function available in certain countries:
if Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC has braked
the vehicle to a standstill, it can automatically fol-
low the vehicle in front when driving oM again
within 30 seconds. If a critical situation is detec-
ted in the surrounding area when driving oM,such
as a person in the vehicle path, a visual and
acoustic warning is given indicating that the driver
must now take control of the vehicle. The vehicle
is not accelerated any further.
