Avoid hard braking and high-speed driving. Stop the vehicle in a safe place, put the selec- tor lever to the “P” (PARK) position and turn off the electric motor unit. Restart the electric motor unit and check tosee whether the light goes out after a few minutes driving; if it then remains off during driving, there is no problem. However, if the warning light does not disap- pear, or if it comes on
again when the vehicle
is driven, we recommend you to have thevehicle checked. The ABS and brake force distribution func- tion may not work, so hard braking could make the vehicle unstable.Avoid hard braking and high-speed driving. Stop the vehicle in a safe place and we rec- ommend you to have th
e vehicle checked.
N00568400058
The power steering system operates while the electric motor unit is running. It helps reduce the effort needed to turn the steering wheel. The power steering system has mechanicalsteering capability in ca
se the power assist is
lost. If the power assist is lost for some rea- son, you will still be able to steer your vehi-cle, but you will notice it takes much more effort to steer. If this happens, have your vehi- cle inspected at a certified i-MiEV dealer.
If the warning light illuminates while driving If only the ABS warning light illu- minate If the ABS warning light and brake warning light illuminate at the same time
NOTE
 The warning light may
be illuminated when
the electric motor unit is started while the12V starter battery voltage
is low, but this is
not an ABS malfunction. When the main drive lithium-ion battery is charged, the 12V starte
r battery is charged at
the same time, and the
warning light will go
out. If the warning light does
not go out or illumi-
nates from time to time even after the battery is charged, take your ve
hicle to a certified i-
MiEV dealer and have
the system checked as
soon as possible.  After driving on snow or icy roads, remove any snow and ice whic
h may have been left
around the wheels. On ve
hicles that have an
anti-lock braking system, be careful not todamage the wheel spee
d sensors (A) or the
cables located at each wheel.Front

Active stability control (ASC) Features and controls 5-29
5
N00559200089
On slippery surfaces, the traction control function prevents the drive wheels from spin- ning excessively, thus helping the vehicle to start moving from a stopped condition. It alsoprovides sufficient driving force and steering performance as the vehicle turns while press- ing the acceleration pedal.
N00546800049
The skid control function is designed to help the driver maintain control of the vehicle on slippery roads or during rapid steeringmaneuvers. It works by controlling the elec- tric motor unit output and the brake on each wheel.
N00559401277
The ASC is automatically activated when theelectric motor switch is turned to the “ON” position. You can deacti
vate the system by
pressing down the ASC OFF switch for 3 sec-onds or longer. When the ASC is deacti
vated, the indica-
tor will be illuminated. To reactivate the
ASC, momentarily
press the ASC OFF
switch; the indicator is turned off.
NOTE
 An operation noise may be emitted from under the hood in the fo
llowing situations.
The sound is associated
with checking the
operations of the ASC.
At this time, you may
feel a shock from the brake pedal if you depress it. These do not indicate a malfunc-tion. • When the electric motor switch is set to the “ON” position. • When the vehicle is driven for a while after the electric motor unit is turned on.
 When the ASC is acti
vated, you may feel a
vibration in the vehicle body or hear a whin- ing sound from under the hood. This indicates that the system is operatingnormally. It does not i
ndicate a malfunction.
 When the anti-lock braking system warning light is illuminated, the ASC is not active.
Traction control function
CAUTION When driving a vehicle on a snowy or icy road, be sure to install snow tires and drivethe vehicle at moderate speeds.
Skid control function
NOTE
 The skid control func
tion operates at speeds
of about 9 mph (15 km/h) or higher.
ASC OFF switch
CAUTION For safety reasons, the ASC OFF switch should be operated when your vehicle isstopped.  Be sure to keep the ASC on while driving in normal circumstances.NOTE
 Using the ASC OFF swit
ch turns off both the
skid control function a
nd the traction control
function.  When moving out of mud, sand or fresh snow, pressing the ac
celerator pedal may not
allow the electric motor speed to increase. Insuch situations, temporarily deactivate the ASC, using the ASC OFF switch.

The indicators should illuminate when the electric motor switch is turned to the “ON” position, and should turn
off after a few sec-
onds.If the indicator stays on
or does not illuminate
when the electric motor switch is turned to the “ON” position, have the vehicle inspectedby a certified i-MiEV de
aler as soon as possi-
ble. indicator blinks when the ASC is operat- ing. indicator is illuminated when the ASC is deactivated.
N00530201537
The tire pressure monitoring system uses tire inflation pressure sensors (A) on the wheels to monitor the tire inflation pressures. The
system only indicates wh
en a tire is signifi-
cantly under-inflated.
 If you continue to press the ASC OFF switch after the ASC is turned off, the “mistakenoperation protection f
unction” will activate
and the ASC will turn back on.
ASC indicator, ASC OFF indi- cator
CAUTION When indicator blinks, the ASC is oper- ating, which means that the road is slippery or that your vehicle’
s wheels are beginning
to slip. If this happens, drive slower.NOTE
CAUTION If an abnormal condition occurs in the sys- tem while driving, the and indicators will illuminate. In these cases, follow these procedures:• Park your vehicle in
a safe place and stop
the electric motor unit. Restart the electric motor unit again and check whether the and indicators go out
. If these indicators
go out, there is no abnormal condition. If the and indicators remain on even after your vehicle is driven a short distance after re-starting the electric motor unit, have the vehicle inspected by a certified i- MiEV dealer as soon as possible.
 When towing the vehicle with only the rear wheels raised off the ground, do not placethe electric motor switch in the “ON” posi- tion. Placing the electric motor switch in the “ON” position could ca
use the ASC to oper-
ate, resulting in an accident. For details, refer to
“Towing” on page 8-12.
Tire pressure monitoring system
NOTE
 The tire pressure monitoring system is not a substitute for regularly
checking tire infla-
tion pressures. Be sure to check the tire inflation pressures as described in “Tires” on page 9-10.

When the electric motor switch is turned to the “ON” position, this light normally illumi- nates and goes off a
few seconds later.
If one or more of the vehicle tires is signifi-cantly under-inflated, ho
wever, this light will
remain illuminated while the electric motor switch is in the “ON” position.Refer to “If the warning light illuminates while driving” on page 5-32 and take the nec- essary measures.
Each tire, including the spare (if provided), should be checked monthly when cold andinflated to the inflation pressure recom- mended by the vehicle manufacturer on the vehicle placard or tire in
flation pressure label.
(If your vehicle has tires of a different size than the size indicate
d on the vehicle placard
or tire inflation pressure label, you shoulddetermine the proper ti
re inflation pressure
for those tires.) As an added safety fe
ature, your vehicle has
been equipped with a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) that illuminates a low tire pressure telltale when one or more of yourtires is significan
tly under-inflated.
Accordingly, when the low tire pressure tell- tale illuminates, you s
hould stop and check
your tires as soon as
possible, and inflate
them to the proper pressure.
 The tire inflation pressure sensor (A) is installed in the illustrated location. Replacegrommet (B) with a new one when the tire isreplaced. For details, please c
ontact a certified i-MiEV
dealer.
Tire pressure monitoring sys- tem warning light
NOTE
CAUTION If the tire pressure monitoring system warn- ing light does not illuminate when the elec-tric motor switch is turned to the “ON”position, it means that
the tire pressure moni-
toring system is not working properly. Have the system inspected by a certified i-MiEVdealer. In such situations, a malfunctioning of the system may be preventing the monitoring ofthe tire pressure. Avoid sudden braking, sharp turning and high-speed driving. If a malfunction is detected in the tire pres- sure monitoring system, the tire pressure monitoring system warn
ing light will blink
for approximately 1 minute and then remain continuously illuminated. The warning light will issue further warnings each time theelectric motor unit is re
started as long as the
malfunction exists. Check to see whether
the warning light goes
off after few minutes of driving. If it then goes off during driving, there is no problem. However, if the warning light does not go off, or if it blinks again when the electric motor unit is restarte
d, have the vehicle
inspected by a certified i-MiEV dealer. In such situations, a malfunctioning of the system may be preventing the monitoring ofthe tire pressure. For safety reasons, when the warning light appears while driving, avoid sudden braking, sharp turning andhigh-speed driving.

Driving on a significantly under-inflated tire causes the tire to overheat and can lead to tirefailure. Under-inflation also re
duces alternative fuel
efficiency and tire tread life, and may affectthe vehicle’s handling and stopping ability. Please note that the TP
MS is not a substitute
for proper tire mainte
nance, and it is the
driver’s responsibility to maintain correct tire pressure, even if under-inflation has not reached the level to tri
gger illumination of the
TPMS low tire pressure telltale. Your vehicle has also been equipped with a TPMS malfunction indicator to indicate whenthe system is not operating properly. The TPMS malfunction indicator is combined with the low tire pressure telltale. When the system detects a malfunction, the telltale will flash for
approximately one min-
ute and then remain continuously illuminated. This sequence will continue upon subsequent vehicle start-ups as
long as the malfunction
exists. When the malfunction indicator is illumi- nated, the system may not
be able to detect or
signal low tire pressure as intended.TPMS malfunctions may
occur for a variety
of reasons, including the installation of replacement or alternate tires or wheels on thevehicle that prevent the TPMS from function- ing properly. Always check the TPMS mal- function telltale after replacing one or more
tires or wheels on your vehicle to ensure that the replacement or alternate tires and wheelsallow the TPMS to continue to function prop- erly.

1. If the low tire pressure monitoring system warning light illumi
nates, avoid hard
braking, sharp steering maneuvers and high speeds. You should stop and adjustthe tires to the proper inflation pressure as soon as possible. Refer to “Tires” on page 9-10.
2. If the tire pressure monitoring system warning light remains illuminated afteryou have been driving for about 20 min- utes after you adjust the tire inflation pres- sure, one or more of
the tires may have a
puncture. Inspect the tire and if it has a puncture, have it repaired by a certified i- MiEV dealer as soon as possible.
If the warning light illuminates while driving
NOTE
 When inspecting or adjusting the tire pres- sure, to avoid breakage, do not apply exces-sive force to the valve stem.  After inspecting or adju
sting the tire pres-
sure, always reinstall the valve cap on the valve stem. Without the valve cap, dirt or moisture couldget into the valve, resulting in damage to the tire inflation pressure sensor.  Do not use metal valve caps, which may cause a metal reaction, resulting in corrosion and damage of the tire
inflation pressure sen-
sors.  Once adjustments have
been made, the warn-
ing light will go off after a few minutes of driving.
WA R N I N G If the tire pressure monitoring system warning light illumi
nates while you are
driving, avoid hard br
aking, sharp steer-
ing maneuvers and high speeds. Drivingwith an under-inflated tire adversely affects vehicle performance and can result in an accident.CAUTION The tire pressure monitoring system warning light may not illuminate
immediately in the
event of a tire blowout or rapid leak.NOTE
 To avoid the risk of damage to the tire infla- tion pressure sensors, have any punctured tire repaired by a cert
ified i-MiEV dealer. If
the tire repair is not done by a certified i- MiEV dealer, it is not
covered by your war-
ranty.
