Sunroof (if so equipped)

If a hand or head is trapped in the closing sunroof opening, the safety mechanism willcause the sunroof to re-open automatically. The opened sunroof will become operational again after a few seconds.If the safety mechanism is activated 5 or more times consecutively, normal closing of the sunroof will be aborted.As an emergency measure, the sunroof can beclosed in small increments until it is com- pletely closed by repeatedly pressing the switch (2).After performing the emergency measure, consult an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer.
The sunshade can be opened or closed manu- ally while the sunroof is closed. When the sunroof is opened, the sunshade will also open automatically.
Safety mechanism

NOTE
 The safety mechanism can be activated if the driving conditions or other circumstances cause the sunroof to be subjected to a physi-cal shock similar to that caused by a trapped hand or head.CAUTION The safety mechanism is deactivated just before the sunroof closes. This allows the sunroof to close completely. Therefore beespecially careful that fingers are not trapped in the sunroof opening.
 The safety mechanism is deactivated while the switch (2) is pressed. Therefore be espe- cially careful that fingers are not trapped in the sunroof opening. Do not deliberately trap your hands or head in order to activate the safety mechanism. Personal injury and malfunction of the sun-roof could result.
Sunshade

CAUTION Do not attempt to close the sunshade when the sunroof is opened.CAUTION
 Be careful that hands are not trapped when closing the sunshade.NOTE
 Be sure to tilt down the sunroof before clos- ing the sunshade.  When leaving the vehicle unattended, be sure to close the sunroof and without the ignition key.  Do not try to operate the sunroof if it is fro- zen closed (after snowfall or during extreme cold).  Do not sit on or place heavy luggage on the sunroof or roof opening edge.  Do not apply any force that may cause dam- age to the sunroof.  Release the switch when the sunroof has reached a completely open or completelyclosed position.  If the sunroof does not operate when the sun- roof switch is operated, release the switch and check whether something is trapped by the sunroof. If nothing is trapped, have thesunroof checked at an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer.  Be careful when tilting
up the sunroof if a ski
carrier or a roof carrier is installed. Depend-ing on the model of ski car
rier or roof carrier,

The CVT has 2 forward selector positions and 1 reverse selector position. The CVT selects an optimum ratio automati-cally when the selector lever is in the “D” (DRIVE) position, depending on the speed of the vehicle and the position of the acceleratorpedal.The selector lever (A) has 2 gates; the main gate (B) and the manual gate (C).
With the brake pedal depressed, set the selector lever in the gate to operate. Set the selector lever in the gate to operate.
WA R N I N G Always depress the brake pedal when shifting the selector lever into a selector position from the “P” (PARK) or “N”(NEUTRAL) position. When beginning to driv
e, do not shift the
selector lever from the “P” (PARK) or“N” (NEUTRAL) position while depress- ing the accelerator pedal. Doing so is dan- gerous because the vehicle will “jump”forward or backward.
NOTE
 To ensure proper transmission operation, stop at each detent position when shifting. After shifting, check the position in the multi-information display.  If the brake pedal is not depressed and held, the shift-lock device activates to prevent the selector lever from being moved from the“P” (PARK) position.  For a shift indicated by in the illustration, depress the brake pedal before moving the selector lever. If you attempt to move theselector lever before depressing the brake pedal, the selector lever will be immovable.
Vehicles with manual gate

NOTE
 In the main gate, the selector lever has 4 positions.  For information on manual gate operation, please refer to “Sports mode” on page 5-64.

When the selector lever cannot be shifted from the “P” (PARK) position to another position while the brake pedal is pressed and held down with the ignition switch at the“ON” position, the battery may be flat or the shift-lock mechanism may be malfunction- ing.Immediately have your vehicle checked by anauthorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice. If you need to move the vehicle, shift theselector lever as follows. 1. Make sure the parking brake is fully applied. 2. Stop the engine if it is running.3. Insert a screwdriver with a cloth over its tip into the notch (A) of the cover. Pry gently as shown to remove the cover.
4. Depress the brake pedal with the right foot. 5. Turn the ignition switch to the “ACC”position. 6. Insert a screwdriver in the shift-lock release hole (B). Shift the selector lever to the “N” (NEUTRAL) position whilepressing the screwdriver down.
Set the selector lever in the gate to operate.

If the CVT does not shift while driving, or your vehicle does not pick up enough speed when starting on an uphill slope, there may be something unusual happening in the transmis-sion, causing a safety device to activate. Have your vehicle checked at an authorized Mit- subishi Motors dealer or a repair facility ofyour choice as soon as possible. 1. If your vehicle has difficulty moving uphill, shift the selector lever into “L” (LOW) position (except for vehicles withsport mode) or 2nd shift range of the sports mode. This method might not work dependingon the type of transmission malfunction.
 Do not rev the engine with the brake pedal pressed when the vehicle is stationary. This can damage the CVT. Also, when you depress the accelerator pedal while holding down the brake pedal with theselector lever in the “D” (DRIVE) position, the engine revolutions may not rise as high as when performing the same operation withthe selector lever in the “N” (NEUTRAL) position.
Passing acceleration

NOTE
 In sports mode, downshifts do not take place when the accelerator is depressed all the way to the floor.
Waiting

CAUTION
CAUTION To avoid transmission overheating, never try to keep your vehicle stationary on a hill by using the accelerator pedal. Always apply the parking brake and/or service brake. Unexpected acceleration may occur if the selector lever is in a position other than “P”(PARK) or “N” (NEUTRAL). Before driving off from a stop, make sure that the selector lever is in “D” (DRIVE)position or “Sports mode” position.
Parking

NOTE
 On a slope, be sure to apply the parking brake before moving the selector lever to the “P” (PARK) position. If you move the selec- tor lever to the “P” (PARK) position before applying the parking brake, it may be diffi-cult to disengage the selector lever from the “P” (PARK) position when next you drive the vehicle, requiring application of a strongforce to the selector lever to move from the “P” (PARK) position.

Overuse of the brake can cause poor brake response and premature wear of the brake pads and linings.When driving down a long or steep hill, use engine braking by downshifting.
CAUTION Always use tires of the same size, same type, and same brand, and which have no wear dif-ferences. Using tires that differ in size, type, brands or the degree of wear, will increase the differential oil temperature, resulting inpossible damage to the driving system. Fur- ther, the drive train will be subjected to excessive loading, possibly leading to oilleakage, component seizure, or other serious problems.

The anti-lock braking system helps prevent the wheels from lockin
g up when braking.
This helps you keep control of your vehicleand its direction.  When using the anti-lock brakes (sudden braking), steering is slightly differentfrom normal driving conditions. Use the steering wheel carefully.
 Always keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you. Even if your vehi- cle is equipped with the anti-lock braking system, leave a greater braking distancewhen: • Driving on gravel or snow-covered roads.• Driving on uneven road surfaces.  Operation of anti-lock braking system is not restricted to situations where brakesare applied suddenly. This system mayalso prevent the wheels from locking when you drive over manholes, steel roadwork plates, road markings, or anyuneven road surface.  When the anti-lock braking system is in use, you may feel the brake pedal vibrat-ing and hear a unique sound. You may also feel as if the pedal resists being pressed.In this situation, simply hold the brake pedal down firmly. Do not pump the brake, which will result in reducedbraking performance.

Warning light
 When the brake assist system is in use while driving, you may feel as if the depressed brake pedal is soft, the pedal moves in small motions in conjunction with the operation noise, or the vehicle body and the steeringwheel vibrate. This occurs when the brake assist system is operating normally and does not indicate faulty operation. Continue todepress the brake pedal.  You may hear an operation noise when the brake pedal is suddenly or fully depressed while stationary. This does not indicate a malfunction and the brake assist system isoperating normally.
Anti-lock braking system Driving hints
NOTE
CAUTION The anti-lock braking system cannot prevent accidents. It is your responsibility to take safety precautions and to drive carefully.  To prevent failure of the anti-lock braking system, be sure all four wheels and tires arethe same size and the same type.
 Never install a limited slip differential as the ABS may not function normally. Please consult an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer.NOTE
 After your vehicle is driven a short distance after starting the engine, you will hear thesound coming from the engine compartment. These are the normal sounds the anti-lock braking system makes when performing aself-check. It does not indicate a malfunc- tion.  The anti-lock braking system can be used after the vehicle has reached a speed over approximately 6 mph (10 km/h). It stopsworking when the vehicle slows below approximately 3 mph (5 km/h).

The skid control function is designed to helpthe driver maintain control of the vehicle onslippery roads or during rapid steering maneuvers. It works by controlling the engine output and the brake on each wheel.

The ASC is automatically activated when the ignition switch is turned to the “ON” posi- tion. You can deactivate the system by press-ing down the “ASC OFF” switch for 3 seconds or longer. When the ASC is deactivated, the dis- play/indicator will turn on. To reactivate the ASC, momentarily press the “ASC OFF” switch ; the display/indicator is turned off.
NOTE
 An operation noise may be emitted from the engine compartment in the following situa- tions. The sound is associated with checking the operations of the ASC. At this time, you may feel a shock from the brake pedal if youdepress it. These do not indicate a malfunc- tion. • When the ignition switch is set to the “ON” position. • When the vehicle is driven for a while after the engine is turned on.
 When the ASC is activated, you may feel a vibration in the vehicle body or hear a whin- ing sound from the engine compartment.This indicates that the system is operating normally. It does not indicate a malfunction.  When the anti-lock braking system warning light is illuminated, the ASC is not active.
Traction control function

CAUTION When driving a vehicle on a snowy or icy road, be sure to install snow tires and drive the vehicle at moderate speeds.
Skid control function

NOTE
 The skid control function operates at speeds of about 9 mph (15 km/h) or higher.
“ASC OFF” switch

CAUTION For safety reasons, the “ASC OFF” switch should be operated when your vehicle is stopped.  Be sure to keep the ASC on while driving in normal circumstances.NOTE
 Using the “ASC OFF” switch turns off both the skid control function and the traction control function.  When moving out of mud, sand or fresh snow, pressing the accelerator pedal may notallow the engine speed to increase. In such situations, temporarily turning off ASC with the “ASC OFF” switch will make it easier tomove out your vehicle.  If you continue to press the “ASC OFF” switch after the ASC is turned off, the “mis- taken operation protection function” will activate and the ASC will turn back on.

Placing the ignition switch in the “ON” position could cause theASC to operate, resulting in an accident. Note that the correct towing method depends on the transmission type and the vehicle’s drive configuration. For details, refer to “Towing” on page 8-12.
Power steering system
WA R N I N G Do not stop the engine while the vehicle is moving. Stopping the engine would make the steering wheel extremely hard to turn,possibly resulting in an accident.
Hydraulic power steering sys- tem (HPS)

CAUTION Do not leave the steering wheel turned all the way in one direction. This can cause damage to the power steering system.
Electric power steering system (EPS)
(if so equipped)NOTE
 During repeated full-lock turning of the steering wheel (for example, while you are manoeuvring the vehicle into a parkingspace), a protection function may be acti- vated to prevent overheating of the power steering system. This function will make thesteering wheel gradually harder to turn. In this event, limit your turning of the steering wheel for a while. When the system hascooled down, the steering effort will return to normal.  If you turn the steering wheel while the vehi- cle is stationary with the headlights on, the headlights may become dim. This behavioris not abnormal. The headlights will return to their original brightness after a short while.
