It is the driver’sresponsibility to drive carefully, This means taking into account the traffic, road and envi- ronmental conditions. Be sure to use the same specified type and size of tire on all four wheels. Otherwise, theASC may not work properly. Do not install any aftermarket limited slip differential (LSD) on your vehicle. The ASC may stop functioning properly.

The skid control function is designed to helpthe driver maintain control of the vehicle onslippery roads or during rapid steering maneuvers. It works by controlling the engine output and the brake on each wheel.

The ASC is automatically activated when the ignition switch is turned to the “ON” posi- tion. You can deactivate the system by press-ing down the “ASC OFF” switch for 3 seconds or longer. When the ASC is deactivated, the dis- play/indicator will turn on. To reactivate the ASC, momentarily press the “ASC OFF” switch ; the display/indicator is turned off.
NOTE
 An operation noise may be emitted from the engine compartment in the following situa- tions. The sound is associated with checking the operations of the ASC. At this time, you may feel a shock from the brake pedal if youdepress it. These do not indicate a malfunc- tion. • When the ignition switch is set to the “ON” position. • When the vehicle is driven for a while after the engine is turned on.
 When the ASC is activated, you may feel a vibration in the vehicle body or hear a whin- ing sound from the engine compartment.This indicates that the system is operating normally. It does not indicate a malfunction.  When the anti-lock braking system warning light is illuminated, the ASC is not active.
Traction control function

CAUTION When driving a vehicle on a snowy or icy road, be sure to install snow tires and drive the vehicle at moderate speeds.
Skid control function

NOTE
 The skid control function operates at speeds of about 9 mph (15 km/h) or higher.
“ASC OFF” switch

CAUTION For safety reasons, the “ASC OFF” switch should be operated when your vehicle is stopped.  Be sure to keep the ASC on while driving in normal circumstances.NOTE
 Using the “ASC OFF” switch turns off both the skid control function and the traction control function.  When moving out of mud, sand or fresh snow, pressing the accelerator pedal may notallow the engine speed to increase. In such situations, temporarily turning off ASC with the “ASC OFF” switch will make it easier tomove out your vehicle.  If you continue to press the “ASC OFF” switch after the ASC is turned off, the “mis- taken operation protection function” will activate and the ASC will turn back on.

 If the temperature in the braking system con- tinues to increase due to continuous brake control on a slippery road surface, the display/indicator will blink. To prevent the brake system from overheating, the brake control of the traction control function will be temporarily suspended. The engine con-trol of the traction control function and nor- mal brake operation will not be affected. Park your vehicle in a safe place. When thetemperature in the braking system has come down, the display/indicator will be turned off and the traction control function will start operating again.NOTE
 The display/indicator may come on when you start the engine. This means that the bat- tery voltage momentarily dropped when the engine was started. It does not indicate a malfunction, provided that the display goesout immediately.  When a spare tire has been put on your vehi- cle, the gripping ability of the tire will be lower, making it more likely that the dis- play/indicator will blink.CAUTION

The power steering system operates while the engine is running. It helps reduce the effortneeded to turn the steering wheel. The power steering system has mechanical steering capability in case the power assist islost. If the power assist is lost for some rea- son, you will still be able to steer your vehi- cle, but you will notice it takes much moreeffort to steer. If this happens, have your vehi-cle inspected at an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice.

CAUTION The system may be malfunctioning. Park your vehicle in a safe place and stop the engine. Restart the engine and check whether the dis- play/indicator goes out. If they go out, thereis no abnormal condition. If they do not go out or if they turn on frequently, it is not nec- essary to stop the vehicle immediately, butyou should have your vehicle inspected by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice as soon as pos-sible.

CAUTION When towing the vehicle with only the front wheels or only the rear wheels raised off theground, do not place the ignition switch in the “ON” position. Placing the ignition switch in the “ON” position could cause theASC to operate, resulting in an accident. Note that the correct towing method depends on the transmission type and the vehicle’s drive configuration. For details, refer to “Towing” on page 8-12.
Power steering system
WA R N I N G Do not stop the engine while the vehicle is moving. Stopping the engine would make the steering wheel extremely hard to turn,possibly resulting in an accident.
Hydraulic power steering sys- tem (HPS)

CAUTION Do not leave the steering wheel turned all the way in one direction. This can cause damage to the power steering system.
Electric power steering system (EPS)
(if so equipped)NOTE
 During repeated full-lock turning of the steering wheel (for example, while you are manoeuvring the vehicle into a parkingspace), a protection function may be acti- vated to prevent overheating of the power steering system. This function will make thesteering wheel gradually harder to turn. In this event, limit your turning of the steering wheel for a while. When the system hascooled down, the steering effort will return to normal.  If you turn the steering wheel while the vehi- cle is stationary with the headlights on, the headlights may become dim. This behavioris not abnormal. The headlights will return to their original brightness after a short while.

Cruise control is an automatic speed control system. It lets you keep the same driving speed. Cruise control can be activated atabout 25 mph (40 km/h)
or more. It is espe-
cially useful for freeway driving. Cruise con- trol does not work at speeds below about 25 mph (40 km/h).
To activate and deactivate the cruise control function. To reduce the set speed and to set the speed of constant-speed driving. To increase the set speed and to resume to the previous set speed. To terminate constant-speed driving.
CAUTION If the warning display appears while the engine is running, have the vehicle inspected by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer ora repair facility of
your choice as soon as
possible. It may become harder to turn the steering wheel.
Cruise control
(if so equipped)
CAUTION For safety reasons, the cruise control system should be set to the “OFF” position by press- ing the “ON OFF” switch (A) when you are not using the cruise control system. Do not use cruise control when driving con- ditions will not allow you to stay at the same speed, such as in heavy traffic or on roadsthat are winding, icy, snowy, wet, slippery or on a steep downhill slope. On vehicles with manual transaxle, do not move the gearshift lever to the “N” (Neutral) position while driving at a set speed withoutdepressing the clutch pedal. The engine will run too fast and might be damaged. NOTE
 Cruise control may not be able to keep your speed on uphills or downhills.  Your speed may drop on a steep uphill. You may have to use the accelerator pedal if you want to stay at your set speed.  Your speed may increase to more than the set speed on a steep downhill. You must use the brake to control your speed.

1. With the ignition switch in the “ON” posi- tion, press the “ON OFF” switch (A) to turn on the cruise control. The “CRUISE” indicator light in the meter cluster willcome on.
2. Accelerate or decelerate to your desired speed, then press and release the “COAST SET” switch (B) when the “CRUISE” indicator light is illuminated. The vehiclewill then maintain the desired speed.

 When operating the cruise control switches, correctly press each cruise control switch. The cruise control may be turned off auto- matically if two or more of the cruise control switches are pressed at the same time.

NOTE
 If the cruise control is on when the ignition switch is turned to “LOCK” or “ACC” posi- tion, cruise control will turn on automatically and the “CRUISE” control indicator will illuminate the next time you start the engine.  If the battery voltage is insufficient, the memory data for the cruise control will beerased. As a result, the “CRUISE” control indicator may not come on when you restart the engine. If this happens, press the “ONOFF” switch once again to activate the cruise control.
NOTE
 The speed when you released the “COAST SET” switch will be set as the cruising speed.

the “ACC RES” switch (C), the speed will increase by approximately 1 mph (1.6 km/h). Use the accelerator pedal to reach your desired speed. Press the “COAST SET” switch (B) and release the switch momen- tarily to set a new desired cruising speed.

There are 2 ways to reduce the set speed.
Press and hold the “COAST SET” switch (B), the speed will slow down (coast) gradually. When you reach your desired speed, releasethe “COAST SET” switch. Your cruising speed is now set. To decrease the speed in small amounts, press the “COAST SET” switch (B) for less than 1 second and release it. Every time you pressthe “COAST SET” switch (B), the speed will decrease by approximately 1 mph (1.6 km/h).
Press the brake pedal (which disengages the cruise control) and when the desired speed is reached, press the “COAST SET” switch (B)and release the switch momentarily to set a new desired cruise speed.

The cruise control can be turned off as fol- lows:  Press the “ON OFF” switch (A). (Cruise control will be turned off.)  Press the “CANCEL” switch (D).  Depress the brake pedal or lightly tap it.
The cruise control will be turned off automat- ically in the following conditions:  When you depress the clutch pedal (on vehicles with manual transaxle).  Your speed slows to about 10 mph (15 km/h) or more below the set speed because of an uphill, etc.  Your speed slows to about 25 mph (40 km/h) or less.
 When the active stability control (ASC) starts operating (if so equipped). Refer to “Active stability control (ASC)” on page 5-76.
Also, the set speed driving may be deacti- vated as follow:  When the engine speed rises and approaches the tachometer’s red zone (the red-colored part of the tachometer dial).

WA R N I N G On vehicles with continuously variable transmission (CVT), although the cruisecontrol will be disengaged when shifting to the “N” (NEUTRAL) position, never move the selector lever to the “N” (NEUTRAL)position while driving. You would have no engine braking and this could cause a serious accident.CAUTION When the set speed driving is deactivated automatically in any situation other than those listed above, there may be a system malfunction.Press the “ON OFF” switch to turn off the cruise control and have your vehicle inspected by an authorized MitsubishiMotors dealer or a repair facility of your choice.

 The tire pressure monitoring system is not a substitute for regularly checking tire infla- tion pressures. system warning light normally illuminates and goes off a few seconds later. If one or more of the vehicle tires (except for the spare tire) is significantly under-inflated, the warning light will remain illuminatedwhile the ignition switch is in the “ON” posi- tion. Refer to “If the warning light/display illumi-nates while driving” on page 5-86 and take the necessary measures.
Each tire, including the spare (if provided), should be checked monthly when cold andinflated to the inflation pressure recom- mended by the vehicle manufacturer on the vehicle placard or tire inflation pressure label.(If your vehicle has tires of a different size than the size indicated on the vehicle placard or tire inflation pressure label, you shoulddetermine the proper tire inflation pressure for those tires.) As an added safety feature, your vehicle hasbeen equipped with a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) that illuminates a low tire pressure telltale when one or more of yourtires is significantly under-inflated.
NOTE
 In addition, the warning display is displayed on the information screen in the multi-infor- mation display. Type 1 Type 2
CAUTION If the tire pressure monitoring system warn- ing light does not illuminate when the igni- tion switch is turned to the “ON” position, it means that the tire pressure monitoring sys- tem is not working properly. Have the sys-tem inspected by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer. In such situations,
a malfunctioning of the
system may be preventing the monitoring of the tire pressure. Avoid sudden braking, sharp turning and high-speed driving. If a malfunction is detected in the tire pres- sure monitoring system, the tire pressuremonitoring system warning light will blink for approximately 1 minute and then remain continuously illuminated. The warning lightwill issue further warnings each time the engine is restarted as long as the malfunction exists.Check to see whether the warning light goes off after few minutes driving. If it then goes off duri
ng driving, there is no
problem. However, if the warning light does not go off, or if it blinks again when the engine isrestarted, have the vehicle inspected by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer. In such situations,
a malfunctioning of the
