GENERAL INFORMATION
Anti-Lock Brake Safety Precautions
* PLEASE READ THIS FIRST *
This article is intended for general information purposes
only. This information may not apply to all makes and models. If
vehicle is equipped with Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS), refer to
appropriate ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM article in the BRAKES section for
description, operation, depressurizing, testing, system bleeding,
trouble shooting and servicing of specific system.
WARNING: Failure to depressurize ABS could lead to physical injury.
ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
WARNING: Failure to depressurize ABS could lead to physical injury.
* NEVER open a bleeder valve or loosen a hydraulic line
while ABS is pressurized.
* NEVER disconnect or reconnect any electrical connectors
while ignition is on. Damage to ABS control unit may result.
* DO NOT attempt to bleed hyudarulic system without first
referring to the appropriate ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM article
in the BRAKES section.
* Only use specially designed brake hoses/lines on ABS equipped
vehicles.
* DO NOT tap on speed sensor components (sensor, sensor rings).
Sensor rings must be pressed into hubs, NOT hammered into
hubs. Striking these components can cause demagnetization or
a loss of polarization, affecting the accuracy of the speed
signal returning to the ABS control unit.
* DO NOT mix tire sizes. Increasing the width, as long as tires
remain close to the original diameter, is acceptable. Rolling
diameter must be identical for all 4 tires. Some
manufacturers recommend tires of the same brand, style and
type. Failure to follow this precaution may cause inaccurate
wheel speed readings.
* DO NOT contaminate speed sensor components with grease. Only
use recommended coating, when system calls for an
anti-corrosion coating.
* When speed sensor components have been removed, ALWAYS check
sensor-to-ring air gaps when applicable. These specifications
can be found in each appropriate article.
* ONLY use rocommended brake fluids. DO NOT use silicone brake
fluids in an ABS equipped vehicle.
* When instlling transmittion devices (CB's, telephones, etc.)
on ABS equipped vehicles, DO NOT locate the antenna near the
ABS control unit (or any control unit).
* Disconnect all on-board computers, when using electric
welding equipment.
* DO NOT expose the ABS control unit to prolonged periods of
high heat (185
F/85C for 2 hours is generally considered a
maximum limit).

its useful life.

WHEEL & TIRE SPECIFICATIONS
Tire specifications are imprinted on the tire side wall. The
recommended cold tire inflation pressures are listed on a label
attached to the rear face of the driver's door. These pressures
provide the best combination of ride comfort, tire wear and stability
under normal conditions.
CAUTION: DO NOT mix tires of different design such as radial ply
with bias or bias-belted tires. Mixing tire types will
adversely affect road handling and may lead to loss of
vehicle control. When using snow tires, they must be used
in set of four for maneuverability and safety. DO NOT use
tire chains on front wheels.

Wheel Alignment
PRE-ALIGNMENT INSPECTION PROCEDURES
PRE-ALIGNMENT CHECKS
Before making wheel alignment adjustment, perform the
following checks:
1) Tires should be equal in size and runout must not be
excessive. Tires and wheels should be in balance, and inflated to
manufacturer's specifications.
2) Wheel bearings must be properly adjusted. Steering linkage
and suspension must not have excessive looseness. Check for wear in
tie rod ends and ball joints.
3) Steering gear box must not have excessive play. Check and
adjust to manufacturer's specifications.
4) Vehicle must be at curb height with full fuel load and
spare tire in vehicle. No extra load should be on vehicle.
5) Vehicle must be level with floor and with suspension
settled. Jounce front and rear of vehicle several times and allow it
to settle to normal curb height.
6) If steering wheel is not centered with front wheels in
straight-ahead position, correct by shortening one tie rod adjusting
sleeve and lengthening opposite sleeve equal amounts.
7) Ensure wheel lug nuts are tightened to torque
specifications.

NOTE: This article contains scheduled maintenance service
information. Fluid types and capacities listed with each
service in this article are only those necessary to perform
that scheduled service. For specifications pertaining to
fluid capacities for the entire vehicle, fuse and circuit
breaker identification, wheel and tire size, battery type,
warranty information, or model identification refer to the
MAINTENANCE INFORMATION article in this section.
CAUTIONS & WARNINGS
SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (AIR BAG)
NOTE: See the AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEM article in the
ACCESSORIES/SAFETY EQUIPMENT Section.
Modifications or improper maintenance, including incorrect
removal and installation of the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS),
can adversely affect system performance. DO NOT cover, obstruct or
change the steering wheel horn pad in any way, as such action could
cause improper function of the system. Use only plain water when
cleaning the horn pad. Solvents or cleaners could adversely affect the
air bag cover and cause improper deployment of the system.
WARNING: To avoid injury from accidental air bag deployment, read and
carefully follow all warnings and service precautions. See
appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEM article in the
ACCESSORIES/SAFETY EQUIPMENT section.
CAUTION: Disconnect negative battery cable before servicing any air
bag system, steering column or passenger side dash
component. After any repair, turn ignition key to the ON
position from passenger's side of vehicle in case of
accidental air bag inflation
AIR CONDITIONING SERVICING
WARNING: R-134a service equipment or vehicle A/C systems SHOULD NOT
be pressure tested or leak tested with compressed air. Some
mixtures of air/R134a have shown to be combustible at
elevated pressures. These mixtures are dangerous and may
cause fire and/or explosions. See the appropriate
A/C SYSTEM GENERAL SERVICING article in the AIR CONDITIONING
& HEAT section.

WARNING: Avoid breathing R-134a refrigerant and PAG lubricant vapors,
exposure may irritate eyes, nose and throat. To remove
R-134a from system use R-134a recycling equipment that meets
SAE J2210 specifications. If accidental system discharge
occurs, ventilate work area before resuming service.
ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM
The anti-lock brake system contains electronic equipment that
can be susceptible to interference caused by improperly installed or
high output radio transmitting equipment. Since this interference
could cause the possible loss of the anti-lock braking capability,
such equipment should be installed by qualified professionals.
On models equipped with anti-lock brake systems, ALWAYS
observe the following cautions:
* DO NOT attempt to bleed hydraulic system without first
referring to the appropriate ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM article
in the BRAKES Section.
* DO NOT mix tire sizes. As long as tires remain close to the
original diameter, increasing the width is acceptable.
Rolling diameter must be identical for all 4 tires. Some
manufacturers recommend tires of the same brand, style and
type. Failure to follow this precaution may cause inaccurate
wheel speed readings.
* Use ONLY recommended brake fluids. DO NOT use silicone brake
fluids in an ABS-equipped vehicle.
REPLACING BLOWN FUSES
Before replacing a blown fuse, remove ignition key, turn off
all lights and accessories to avoid damaging the electrical system. Be
sure to use fuse with the correct indicated amperage rating. The use
of an incorrect amperage rating fuse may result in a dangerous
electrical system overload.
BATTERY WARNING
WARNING: When battery is disconnected, vehicles equipped with
computers may lose memory data. When battery power is
restored, driveability problems may exist on some vehicles.
These vehicles may require a relearn procedure. See
appropriate COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in the
GENERAL INFORMATION section below.
BRAKE FLUID
For vehicles equipped with a traction control system, idle
engine while pouring brake fluid into reservoir.
CATALYTIC CONVERTER
Continued operation of vehicle with a severe malfunction
could cause converter to overheat, resulting in possible damage to
converter and vehicle.
ELECTROSTATIC DISCHARGE SENSITIVE (ESD) PARTS
WARNING: Many solid state electrical components can be damaged by
static electricity (ESD). Some will display a warning label,
but many will not. Discharge personal static electricity by

overrunning clutch, armature assembly, solenoid assembly or field
coils due to possible damage. Inspect all parts for damage or wear and
replace as required.
BENCH TESTS
Brushes & Springs
Check brush spring tension using a spring scale. Check brush
contact surface condition and brush length. Check lead clip and wire
connections and condition of brush holders. Replace as required. See
Brush Spring Tension and Minimum Brush Length Charts.

Armature
Check external condition of armature for scoring or other
damage. Measure shaft distortion with dial indicator. Replace armature
if shaft distortion exceeds .004" (.10 mm).
Commutator
1) Inspect commutator for roughness, grooves, burns or
pitting. Sand lightly with 500 grit sandpaper if necessary. Check
commutator for out-of-round and mica insulators undercut to a depth of
.020-.031" (.5-.8 mm).
2) If necessary, commutator may be turned less than .04" (1
mm) from original size and mica undercut. Replace if excessively worn.
Field Coil
1) Check field coil continuity by connecting test probe of
circuit tester or an ohmmeter to the field coil positive terminal and
brush holder. If circuit is open, replace field coil.
2) Check for grounding of field coils by placing one probe of
circuit tester on starter housing and other probe to field coil
positive terminal. If little or no resistance, field coil is grounded
and must be replaced.
Overrunning Clutch Assembly
1) Inspect pinion assembly and sleeve. Sleeve should slide
freely on armature shaft and spline. If damage or resistance is noted,
replace assembly.
2) Check pinion and flywheel teeth for excessive rubbing or
damaged teeth. Replace as required.
Pinion Gear Clearance
The clearance between the pinion gear and pinion stopper

(1) - Require replacement of units where dents restrict shock
or strut piston rod movement. If dents don't restrict
movement, no service is suggested or required. Especially
critical on mono-tube shocks.
( 2) - This condition can lead to damage of the piston rod,
which, in turn, causes premature piston rod seal wear.
( 3) - Only required if replacing cartridge.
( 4) - CAUTION: If the strut cartridge has been replaced previously,
the oil on the strut housing may be filler oil. The
technician must identify the source of the oil.
( 5) - If noise is isolated to shock or strut, suggest
replacement.
( 6) - Although shocks or struts may have contributed to tire
cupping, an inspection is needed of the entire suspension
system. If the shock or strut is found to be contributing
to the tire cupping, require replacement.

SPRINGS - COIL, LEAF AND TORSION BAR
When springs are replaced, it is suggested, but not required,
that both springs on an axle be replaced to maintain equal height from
side to side and to provide a balanced ride and proper handling.
When variable rate springs are installed in place of
conventional coil springs, they must be installed in axle sets to
ensure proper handling, uniform ride, and proper chassis height.
Erroneous height measurements may result from: improper tire
inflation, non-standard tire or wheel size, and heavy load in vehicle
or trunk.
