CAUT,ONzEffectiveness of the regenerative brake be-
comes weak when the drive battery is close
to full charge and loses its effect at the full
charge.
In this case, since the foot brake is effective,
use the foot brake and slow down your vehi-
cle speed beforehand.
The energy usage indicator stops swaying in the charge zone closer to full charge.
Refer to “Energy usage indicator” on page
6-02
In such case, drive at low speed in advance.
And if needed use the foot brake to slow down the vehicle speed before the vehicle speed increases.
The regenerative brake comes to be effective
if the drive battery remaining power is con- sumed.
Brake pad
z Avoid hard braking situations.
New brakes need to be broken-in by
moderate use for the first 200 km
(124 miles).
z The disc brakes are provided with a
warning device which emits a shrieking
metallic sound while braking if the brake
pads have reached their wear limit. If you hear this sound, have the brake padsreplaced immediately.
:ARN,NGz Driving with worn brake pads will make
it harder to stop, and can cause an acci-
dent.Brake auto hold
E00652000136
When the vehicle is stopped at traffic signalsetc., the vehicle can be held stationary with
the brake auto hold system even if you re-
lease your foot from the brake pedal.
When the accelerator pedal is depressed, the brakes are released.
:ARN,NGz Do not overly rely on the brake auto hold
system. On a steep slope, depress the
brake pedal firmly because the system may not hold the vehicle stationary.
z Never leave the vehicle while it is being
stopped by the brake auto hold system.
When leaving the vehicle, apply the park- ing brake and put the select position to
the “P” (PARK) position.
z Do not use the brake auto hold system
when driving on slippery roads. The sys- tem may not hold the vehicle stationary
and an accident could occur.NOTEz While operating the brake auto hold system,
you may hear an operation noise to increasebraking force when the system detected the
movement of the vehicle. This does not indi- cate a malfunction.
How to use brake auto hold
To turn on brake auto hold
If the brake auto hold switch is pressed while
all of the following conditions are met, the system will change to the standby state and
the indication lamp (A) on the switch comes on.
z The operation mode of the power switch
is in the “ON” position.
z The driver’s seat belt is fastened.
z The driver’s door is closed.

CAUT,ONzDo not overly rely on the hill start assist to
prevent backwards movement of the vehicle. Under certain circumstances, even when hill
start assist is activated, the vehicle may
move backwards if the brake pedal is not sufficiently depressed, if the vehicle is heav-
ily loaded, or if the road is very steep or slip- pery.
z The hill start assist is not designed to keep
the vehicle stopped in place on uphill slopes for more than 2 seconds.
z When facing uphill, do not rely on using the
hill start assist to maintain a stopped position as an alternative to depressing the brake ped-
al.
Doing so could result in an accident.
z Do not turn the operation mode in ACC or
OFF while the hill start assist is operating.
The hill start assist could stop operating, which could result in an accident. To operate
E00628101498
1. Stop the vehicle completely using the
brake pedal.
2. Put the select position to the “D” posi-
tion.
NOTEz When reversing on an uphill slope, put the
select position to the “R” position.3. Release the brake pedal and the hill start
assist will maintain the braking force ap-
plied while stopped for approximately 2 seconds.
4. Depress the accelerator pedal and the
hill start assist will gradually decrease the braking force as the vehicle startsmoving.NOTEz The hill start assist is activated when all of
the following conditions are met.

Brake assist systemE00627001793
The brake assist system is a device assisting drivers who cannot depress the brake pedalfirmly when it is necessary to do so (such as
in emergency stop situations) and provides
greater braking force.

If the brake pedal is depressed suddenly, the brakes will be applied with more force thanusual.CAUT,ONz The brake assist system is not a device de-
signed to exercise braking force greater than its capacity. Make sure to always keep a suf-
ficient distance between your vehicle and a
vehicle in front of you without relying too much on the brake assist system.NOTEz Once the brake assist system is operational,
it maintains great braking force even if the
brake pedal is lightly released.
To stop its operation, completely remove
your foot from the brake pedal.NOTEz When the brake assist system is in use, you
may feel as if the depressed brake pedal issoft, the pedal moves in small motions inconjunction with the sound of the ABS oper- ation, or the vehicle body and the steering
wheel vibrate. This occurs when the brake
assist system is operating normally and does not indicate faulty operation. Continue to
firmly depress the brake pedal.
z You may hear an operation noise when the
brake pedal is depressed suddenly while sta-
tionary. This does not indicate a malfunction
and the brake assist system is operating nor- mally.
z When the anti-lock brake system warning
lamp or only Active Stability Control warn- ing lamp illuminate, the brake assist system
in not functioning.Emergency stop signal
system E00626001259
This is a device that reduces the possibility ofrear end collisions by the rapid and automatic blinking of the hazard warning lamps to alert
vehicles approaching from behind during sudden braking. When the emergency stop
signal system operates, the hazard warning indication lamp in the instrument cluster
blinks rapidly at the same time.
CAUT,ONz If the ABS warning or ASC warning is dis-
played, the emergency stop signal system may not operate. Refer to “ABS warning lamp/display” on page 7-41.
Refer to “ASC warning lamp/display” on
page 7-45.NOTEz [Activating condition for the emergency stop
signal system@
It activates when all of the following condi-
tions are met.

Anti-lock brake system(ABS) E00607102489
Environmental conditions can have an effect
on braking. During sudden braking when there is snow, ice, oil, water etc. on the road
surface, a skid may occur. In this situation,
steering control and braking effectiveness is
reduced and the stopping distance is in- creased. The vehicle may also go into an un-controlled spin.
The ABS helps prevent the wheels from lock-
ing during braking, thus maintaining direc-
tional stability, ensuring controllability and
providing optimum braking force.
Operating hints
z Always maintain the same distance from
the vehicle in front of you as you would for a vehicle not equipped with ABS.
Compared with vehicles not fitted with ABS, your vehicle may require a longer
stopping distance in the following cases:

CAUT,ONzNever install a limited-slip differential,
which is not MITSUBISHI MOTORS GEN-
UINE parts, as the ABS may not function
normally.
We recommend you to consult a
MITSUBISHI MOTORS Authorized Serv-
ice Point.ABS warning lamp/display
E00607202321
Warning lampWarning display
If there is a malfunction in the system, the
ABS warning lamp will come on and the
warning display will appear on the informa- tion screen in the multi information display.
Under normal conditions, the ABS warning
lamp only comes on when the operation
mode is put in ON and goes off a few sec- onds later.
CAUT,ONz Any of the following warning lamp/display
behaviour indicates that the ABS is not func-tioning and only the standard brake system
is working. (The standard brake system is functioning normally.) If this happens, take
your vehicle to a MITSUBISHI MOTORS
Authorized Service Point.

Warning display
The ABS and brake force distribution func-tion may not work, so hard braking could
make the vehicle unstable.
Avoid hard braking and high-speed driving. Stop the vehicle in a safe place immediately
and contact a MITSUBISHI MOTORS Au-
thorized Service Point.
NOTEz The ABS warning lamp and brake warning
lamp illuminate at the same time and the
warning displays appear alternately on the information screen in the multi informationdisplay. After driving on icy roads
E00618801388
After driving on snowy roads, remove any
snow and ice which may have become ad-
hered to the wheel areas.
When doing this, be careful not to damage
the wheel speed sensors (A) and cables loca-ted at each wheel on vehicles equipped with an ABS.Electric power steering
system (EPS) E00629201294
The power steering system operates while thePlug-in Hybrid EV System is operating.
It helps reduce the effort needed to turn the
steering wheel.
The power steering system has mechanical steering capability in case the power assist is
lost. If the power assist is lost for some rea- son, you will still be able to steer your vehi-
cle, but you will notice it takes much more
effort to steer. If this happens, have your ve- hicle inspected at a MITSUBISHI MOTORS
Authorized Service Point.
:ARN,NGz Do not stop the Plug-in Hybrid EV Sys-
tem while the vehicle is moving. Stopping the Plug-in Hybrid EV System would
make the steering wheel extremely hard to turn, possibly resulting in an accident.NOTEz During repeated full-lock turning of the
steering wheel (for example, while you are manoeuvring the vehicle into a parking space), a protection function may be activa-
ted to prevent overheating of the power steering system. This function will make the
steering wheel gradually harder to turn. In
this event, limit your turning of the steering wheel for a while. When the system has
cooled down, the steering action will return to normal.
z If you turn the steering wheel while the vehi-
cle is stationary with the headlamps on, the
headlamps may become dim. This behaviour is not abnormal. The headlamps will returnto their original brightness after a shortwhile.

Electric power steering systemwarning display
If there is a malfunction in the system, the warning display will appear on the informa-
tion screen in the multi information display.
CAUT,ONz If the warning display appears while the
Plug-in Hybrid EV System is operating,
have the vehicle inspected by a MITSUBISHI MOTORS Authorized Serv-
ice Point as soon as possible.
It may become harder to turn the steering
wheel.Active stability control
(ASC) E00616701468
The Active Stability Control (ASC) takes
overall control of the anti-lock brake system, traction control function and stability control
function to help maintain the vehicle’s con-
trol and traction. Please read this section in conjunction with the page on the anti-lock
brake system, traction control function and stability control function.

Anti-lock brake system (ABS) o p. 7-40
Traction control function o p. 7-44
Stability control function o p. 7-44CAUT,ONz Do not over-rely on the ASC. Even the ASC
cannot prevent the natural laws of physics
from acting on the vehicle.
This system, like any other system, has lim-
its and cannot help you to maintain traction and control of the vehicle in all circumstan- ces. Reckless driving may lead to accidents.
It is the driver’s responsibility to drive care- fully. This means taking into account the traffic, road and environmental conditions.
z Be sure to use the same specified type and
size of tyre on all 4 wheels. Otherwise, the ASC may not work properly.CAUT,ONz Do not install any aftermarket limited-slip
differential (LSD) on your vehicle. The ASC
may stop functioning properly.NOTEz An operation noise may be emitted from the
Plug-in Hybrid EV System compartment in
the following situations. The sound is asso- ciated with checking the operations of the ASC. At this time, you may feel a shock
from the brake pedal if you depress it. These
do not indicate a malfunction.

Traction control function
E00619000087
On slippery surfaces, the traction control
function prevents the drive wheels from ex- cessive spinning, thus helping the vehicle to
start moving from a stopped condition. It also
provides sufficient driving force and steering
performance as the vehicle turns while press- ing the acceleration pedal.
CAUT,ONz When driving a vehicle on a snowy or icy
road, be sure to install snow tyres and drive the vehicle at moderate speeds.Stability control function
E00619101098
The stability control function is designed to
help the driver maintain control of the vehicle
on slippery roads or during rapid steering ma-
noeuvres. It works by controlling the Plugin
Hybrid EV System output and the brake on
each wheel.
NOTEz The stability control function operates at
speeds of about 15 km/h (9 mph) or higher.ASC OFF switch
E00619201871
The ASC is automatically activated when the
operation mode is put in ON. You can deacti-
vate the system by pressing down the ASC
OFF switch for 3 seconds or longer.
When the ASC is deactivated, the
display/
indicator will turn on. To reactivate the ASC, momentarily press the ASC OFF switch; the
indicator is turned off.
CAUT,ONz For safety reasons, the ASC OFF switch
should be operated when your vehicle is stopped.
z Be sure to keep the ASC on while driving in
normal circumstances.CAUT,ONz In case you turn off the ASC to move out
from mud or sand etc., press the ASC OFFswitch to activate the ASC quickly after moving out, and do not turn off the ASC un-less it is necessary.
z If you continue to race the tyre by depress-
ing the accelerator pedal too much while
ASC is turned off, parts such as the transaxle
may be damaged and this could lead to an accident.NOTEz When moving out of mud, sand or fresh
snow, pressing the accelerator pedal may not
allow the Plug-in Hybrid EV System output to increase. In such situations, switching to
“LOCK” with the Drive mode switch and temporarily turning off the Active Stability
Control (ASC) with the ASC OFF switch
will make it easier to move out your vehicle.
Refer to “Operation under adverse driving
conditions: If your vehicle becomes stuck in sand, mud or snow” on page 9-21.
z By pressing the “ASC OFF” switch, both the
stability control function and the traction
control function are turned OFF.
z If you continue to press the ASC OFF switch
after the ASC is turned off, the “mistaken
operation protection function” will activate and the ASC will turn back on.
