warning light
may illuminate. Thisisnot
a malfunction. Restarttheengine after
driving ontoastable surface.
. Ifwheels ortires other thantheNISSAN
recommended onesareused, theVDC
system maynotoperate properly andthe
VDC warning light
may illuminate.
. The VDC system isnot asubstitute forwinter
tires ortire chains onasnow covered road.
The Vehicle Dynamic Control(VDC)system uses
various sensors tomonitor driverinputs andvehicle
motion. Undercertain drivingconditions, theVDC
system helpstoperform thefollowing functions.
. Controls brakepressure toreduce wheelslipon
one slipping drivewheel sopower istransferred to
a non slipping drivewheel onthe same axle.
. Controls brakepressure andengine outputto
reduce drivewheel slipbased onvehicle speed
(traction controlfunction) .
. Controls brakepressure atindividual wheelsand
engine outputtohelp thedriver maintain controlof
the vehicle inthe following conditions:
Ð understeer (vehicletendstonot follow the
steered pathdespite increased steeringinput)
Ð oversteer (vehicletendstospin duetocertain
road ordriving conditions) .
The VDC system canhelp thedriver tomaintain control
of the vehicle, butitcannot prevent lossofvehicle
control inall driving situations.
When theVDC system operates, theVDC warning
light
in the instrument panelflashes sonote the
following:
. The road maybeslippery orthe system may
determine someaction isrequired tohelp the
vehicle onthe steered path. .
You may feelapulsation inthe brake pedaland
hear anoise orvibration fromunder thehood. This
is normal andindicates thattheVDC system is
working properly.
. Adjust yourspeed anddriving tothe road
conditions.
If amalfunction occursinthe system, theVDC warning
light
illuminates inthe instrument panel.TheVDC
system automatically turnsoff.
The VDC OFFswitch isused toturn offthe VDC
system. TheVDC offindicator light
illuminates to
indicate theVDC system isoff. When theVDC OFF
switch isused toturn offthe system, theVDC system
still operates toprevent onedrive wheel fromslipping
by transferring powertoanon slipping drivewheel.
The VDC warning light
flashes ifthis occurs. All
other VDCfunctions areoffand theVDC warning light
will not flash. TheVDC system isautomatically
reset toon when theignition switchisplaced inthe
ªOFFº position thenback tothe ªONº position.
See ªVehicle Dynamic Control(VDC)warning lightº
(P .2-14) andªVehicle Dynamic Control(VDC)off
indicator lightº(P.2-16) .
The computer hasabuilt-in diagnostic featurethat
tests thesystem eachtimeyoustart theengine and
move thevehicle forward orinreverse ataslow speed.
When theself-test occurs,youmay hear aªclunkº
noise and/or feelapulsation inthe brake pedal. Thisis
normal andisnot anindication ofamalfunction.

The vehicle shouldbedriven withtheVehicle Dynamic
Control (VDC)system ONformost driving conditions.
When thevehicle isstuck inmud orsnow ,the VDC
system reduces theengine outputtoreduce wheel
spin. Theengine speedwillbereduced evenifthe
accelerator isdepressed tothe floor. Ifmaximum
engine powerisneeded tofree astuck vehicle, turn
the VDC system off.
T o turn offthe VDC system, pushtheVDC OFFswitch.
The
indicator lightwillilluminate.
Push theVDC OFFswitch againorrestart theengine
to turn ONthesystem.

Self-test feature
GUID-25A1 2632-42C1- 404E-B198-BDCF201D1 532
The ABS includes electronic sensors,electricpumps,
hydraulic solenoids andacomputer. Thecomputer has
a built-in diagnostic featurethattests thesystem each
time youstart theengine andmove thevehicle atalow
speed inforward orreverse. Whentheself-test
occurs, youmay hear aªclunkº noiseand/or feela
pulsation inthe brake pedal. Thisisnormal anddoes
not indicate amalfunction. Ifthe computer sensesa
malfunction, itswitches theABS offand illuminates the
ABS warning lightonthe instrument panel.Thebrake
system thenoperates normally,but without anti-lock
assistance.
If the ABS warning lightilluminates duringtheself-test
or while driving, havethevehicle checked bya
NISSAN dealer.
Normal operation
GUID-731 7FE84-7D F1-491B-AE 03-A1D3516 5D3DC
The ABS operates atspeeds above5to 10 km/h (3to
6 MPH) .The speed variesaccording toroad condi-
tions.
When theABS senses thatoneormore wheels are
close tolocking up,the actuator rapidlyapplies and
releases hydraulic pressure. Thisaction issimilar to
pumping thebrakes veryquickly .You may feela
pulsation inthe brake pedalandhear anoise from
under thehood orfeel avibration fromtheactuator
when itis operating. Thisisnormal andindicates that
the ABS isoperating properly.However, thepulsation
may indicate thatroad conditions arehazardous and
extra careisrequired whiledriving.

When leaving yourvehicle unoccupied:
. Always takethekey with you-even when leaving
the vehicle inyour owngarage.
. Close allwindows completely andlock alldoors.
. Always parkyourvehicle whereitcan beseen.
Park inawell litarea during thenight.
. Ifthe security systemisequipped, useit-even for
a short period.
. Never leavechildren orpets inthe vehicle
unattended.
. Never leavevaluables insidethevehicle. Always
take valuables withyou.
. Never leavethevehicle documents inthe vehicle.
. Never leavearticles onaroof rack. Remove them
from therack andkeep andlock them inside the
vehicle.
. Never leavethespare keyinthe vehicle.

WARNING:
. Whatever thecondition, drivewithcaution.
Accelerate anddecelerate withgreat care.If
accelerating ordecelerating toofast, the
drive wheels willlose even more traction.
. Allow morestopping distanceincold weath-
er driving. Braking shouldbestarted sooner
than ondry pavement.
. Keep atagreater distance fromthevehicle
in front ofyou onslippery roads.
. Wet ice(08C ,328F andfreezing rain),very
cold snow andicecan beslick andvery
difficult todrive on.The vehicle willhave a
lot less traction orgrip under thesecondi-
tions. Try to avoid driving onwet iceuntil the
road issalted orsanded.
. Watch forslippery spots(glaring ice).These
may appear onanotherwise clearroadin
shaded areas.Ifapatch ofice isseen ahead,
brake before reaching it.Try not tobrake
while actually onthe ice, and avoid any
sudden steering maneuvers.
. Donot use cruise control onslippery roads.
. Snow cantrap dangerous exhaustgasunder
your vehicle. Keepsnow clearofthe exhaust
pipe andfrom around yourvehicle.
