CONSULT-II Function (A/T) BCS0010D
CONSULT-II can display each diagnostic item using the diagnostic test models shown following.
FUNCTION
NOTICE:
1. The CONSULT-II electrically displays shift timing and lock-up timing (that is, operation timing of each sole-
noid).
Check for time difference between actual shift timing and the CONSULT-II display. If the difference is
noticeable, mechanical parts (except solenoids, sensors, etc.) may be malfunctioning. Check mechanical
parts using applicable diagnostic procedures.
2. Shift schedule (which implies gear position) displayed on CONSULT-II and that indicated in Service Man-
ual may differ slightly. This occurs because of the following reasons:
–Actual shift schedule has more or less tolerance or allowance,
–Shift schedule indicated in Service Manual refers to the point where shifts start, and
–Gear position displayed on CONSULT-II indicates the point where shifts are completed.
3. Shift solenoid valve “A” or “B” is displayed on CONSULT-II at the start of shifting. Gear position is dis-
played upon completion of shifting (which is computed by TCM).

TROUBLE DIAGNOSIS

Diagnostic Procedure Without CONSULT-IIBCS0010E
TCM SELF-DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE (WITHOUT CONSULT-II)
Description
If a malfunction occurs in electrical system, check the self-diagnostic result after confirming A/T CHECK indi-
cator lamp works. To detect a malfunction, entering a self-diagnosis start signal retrieves information on mal-
functions from memory and indicates malfunction by blinking A/T CHECK indicator lamp.
Diagnostic Procedure
1. CHECK A/T CHECK INDICATOR LAMP
1. Park vehicle on flat surface.
2. Move selector lever to “P” position.
Start engine and warm it up to normal engine operating temperature.
3. Turn ignition switch OFF.
4. Wait 5 seconds.
5. Turn ignition switch ON. (Do not start engine.)
Does A/T CHECK indicator lamp come on for about 2 seconds?
YES >> GO TO 2.
NO >> Stop procedure. Perform AT- 1 7 3 , "
A/T CHECK Indicator Lamp Does Not Come On" before pro-
ceeding.
2. JUDGEMENT PROCEDURE STEP 1
1. Turn ignition switch OFF.
2. Push and hold shift lock release button.
3. Depress the brake pedal, then move gear selector lever from “P” to “3” position.
4. Turn ignition switch ON. (Do not start engine.)
5. Wait 3seconds.
6. Move selector lever to “2” position.
7. Release brake pedal.
8. Move selector lever to “1” position.
9. Depress brake pedal.
10. Depress accelerator.
11. The A/T CHECK indicator lamp will begin to flash.
>> GO TO 3.
3. CHECK SELF-DIAGNOSTIC CODE
Check A/T CHECK indicator lamp. Refer to AT- 7 7 , "
Judgement of Self-Diagnosis Code" .

A/T 1ST GEAR FUNCTION

A/T 1ST GEAR FUNCTIONPFP:31940
DescriptionBCS00131
This malfunction will not be detected while A/T CHECK indicator lamp is indicating another self-diagnosis
malfunction.
This malfunction is detected when the A/T does not shift into first gear position as instructed by TCM. This
is not caused by electrical malfunction (circuits open or shorted) but by mechanical malfunction such as
control valve sticking, improper solenoid valve operation, etc.
On Board Diagnosis LogicBCS00132
This diagnosis monitors actual gear position by checking the torque converter slip ratio calculated by TCM
as follows:
Torque converter slip ratio = A x C/B
A: Output shaft revolution signal from revolution sensor
B: Engine speed signal from ECM
C: Gear ratio determined as gear position which TCM supposes
If the actual gear position is higher than the position (1st) supposed by TCM, the slip ratio will be more
than normal. In case the ratio exceeds the specified value, TCM judges this diagnosis malfunction.
This malfunction will be caused when either shift solenoid valve A is stuck open or shift solenoid valve B is
stuck open.
Gear positions supposed by TCM are as follows.
In case of gear position with no malfunctions: 1 , 2, 3 and 4 positions
In case of gear position with shift solenoid valve A stuck open: 2* , 2, 3 and 3 positions
In case of gear position with shift solenoid valve B stuck open: 4* , 3, 3 and 4 positions to each gear posi-
tion above
*: “A/T 1ST GR FNCTN” is detected.
Diagnostic trouble code “A/T 1ST GR FNCTN” with CONSULT-II is detected when A/T cannot be shifted
to the 1st gear position even if electrical circuit is good.

A/T 2ND GEAR FUNCTIONPFP:31940
DescriptionBCS00136
This malfunction will not be detected while A/T CHECK indicator lamp is indicating another self-diagnosis
malfunction.
This malfunction is detected when A/T does not shift into second gear position as instructed by TCM. This
is not caused by electrical malfunction (circuits open or shorted) but by mechanical malfunction such as
control valve sticking, improper solenoid valve operation, etc.
On Board Diagnosis LogicBCS00137
This diagnosis monitors actual gear position by checking the torque converter slip ratio calculated by TCM
as follows:
Torque converter slip ratio = A x C/B
A: Output shaft revolution signal from revolution sensor
B: Engine speed signal from ECM
C: Gear ratio determined as gear position which TCM supposes
If the actual gear position is higher than the position (2nd) supposed by TCM, the slip ratio will be more
than normal. In case the ratio exceeds the specified value, TCM judges this diagnosis malfunction.
This malfunction will be caused when shift solenoid valve B is stuck open.
Gear positions supposed by TCM are as follows.
In case of gear position with no malfunctions: 1, 2 , 3 and 4 positions
In case of gear position with shift solenoid valve B stuck open: 4, 3* , 3 and 4 positions to each gear posi-
tion above
*: “A/T 2ND GR FNCTN” is detected.
Diagnostic trouble code “A/T 2ND GR FNCTN” with CONSULT-II is detected when A/T cannot be shifted
to the 2nd gear position even if electrical circuit is good.

DescriptionBCS0013B
This malfunction will not be detected while A/T CHECK indicator lamp is indicating another self-diagnosis
malfunction.
This malfunction is detected when A/T does not shift into third gear position as instructed by TCM. This is
not caused by electrical malfunction (circuits open or shorted) but by mechanical malfunction such as con-
trol valve sticking, improper solenoid valve operation, malfunctioning servo piston or brake band, etc.
On Board Diagnosis LogicBCS0013C
This diagnosis monitors actual gear position by checking the torque converter slip ratio calculated by TCM
as follows:
Torque converter slip ratio = A x C/B

DescriptionBCS0013G
This malfunction will not be detected while A/T CHECK indicator lamp is indicating another self-diagnosis
malfunction.
This malfunction is detected when A/T does not shift into fourth gear position or the torque converter
clutch does not lock up as instructed by TCM. This is not caused by electrical malfunction (circuits open or
shorted) but by mechanical malfunction such as control valve sticking, improper solenoid valve operation,

DescriptionBCS0014Z
The electrical key interlock mechanism also operates as a shift lock:
With the ignition switch turned to ON, selector lever cannot be shifted from “P” to any other position unless
brake pedal is depressed.
With the key removed, selector lever cannot be shifted from “P” to any other position.
The key cannot be removed unless selector lever is placed in “P”.
The shift lock and key interlock mechanisms are controlled by the ON-OFF operation of the shift lock sole-
noid and by the operation of the rotator and slider located inside key cylinder, respectively.
