RECOMMENDATIONS FOR APPROVED LUBRICANTS The oils which appear in the table opposite are suitable for most pur-poses. The diagram opposite states the optimum range of viscosity depen-ding on the temperatures at whichthe oils are to be used. It is also possible to use "superior quality" synthetic oils. In the absence of semi-synthetic or
synthetic oils, oils of API SH/SJ qua-lity (for petrol engines), or CD/CFquality (for diesel engines) may beused by following the "ArduousConditions" servicing schedulewhich specifies shorter intervals. Do not hesitate to ask for advice
from a PEUGEOT dealer to maintaindriving pleasure and to minimise themaintenance cost of your vehicle. For countries outside Europe, please
contact a local PEUGEOT dealer.

This warning light is accompanied by an audible signal and the message "Top up
coolant" on the multifunction display.
Stop immediately.
Warning: Allow the engine to cool before topping up.
The cooling system is pressurised. Central STOP warning light This is linked to the "engine oil pressure", ''oil temperature''*, ''coolant level low'', ''brake fluid level'', "electronic brake force dis-tribution fault'', and ''coolant temperature gauge'' warning lights, as
well as warnings of openings, indicated by a diagram on the multifunction dis-
play. This light comes on each time the ignition is switched on.Stop immediately if it flashes with the engine running.
Engine oil pressure warning light Linked to the central STOPwarning light.
If it comes on with the engine running, it is accompanied by an audible signal and the message ''Oil pressure low''or ''Top up engine oil' ' on
the multifunction display.
Stop immediately. If there is a lack of oil in the lubrication circuit, top up the level.
Contact a PEUGEOT dealer without delay.
INSTRUMENTS AND CONTROLS
A permanently lit warning light, or one that flashes with the engine running, indicates an operating fault in the relevant unit. Some warning lights may
be linked to buzzers and a message on the multifunction display. Do notignore this warning: contact a PEUGEOT dealer as soon as possible.
If the central STOP warning light comes on when you are driving, stop immediately ; stop your vehicle where it is safe to do so. To prevent the risk of scalding, uns-crew the cap by two turns to allowthe pressure to drop. Once the pressure has dropped, remove the cap and topup the level.
Contact a PEUGEOT dealer.According to engine.
Handbrake and low brake fluid levelwarning light
Linked to the central STOPwarning
light. This comes on each time the ignition is switched on. Illumination of this light is accompa- nied by an audible signal and a mes-sage on the multifunction displayindicating the cause of the warning: - ''Handbrake on'' , if the handbrake
is applied or has not been released
correctly,
- ''Low brake fluid level'' if there is
an excessive drop in the brakefluid (if the light remains on evenwith the handbrake released),
- ''Brake system problem'' is dis-
played simultaneously with theABS light, indicating a malfunctionof the electronic brake force distri-bution.
Stop immediately.

multifunction display, indi-
cates that the handbrake is still on orhas not been properly released.
Operating abnormality Any operating abnormality is indica- ted by an audible signal accompa-nied by the message "Automatic
gearbox faulty" on the multi-func-
tion display and flashing of the Sportand Snow warning lights on the ins-trument panel. In this situation the gearbox operates in downgrade mode (locked in 3rd
gear). You may feel a substantialknock when changing from Pto R
and from Nto R(this will not cause
any damage to the gearbox). Do not exceed 60 mph (100 km/h), speed restrictions permitting.
Contact a PEUGEOT dealer as soon as possible. Illumination of this warninglight comes on, accompa-nied by an audible signaland the message
"Braking
fault" , indicates that there is
a malfunction of the electronic brakeforce distribution, which can cause aloss of control of the vehicle whenbraking.
Stop immediately.
Contact a PEUGEOT dealer.
HANDBRAKE Locking Pull the handbrake to immobilise your vehicle.
Warning:
when parking on a slope,
direct your wheels towards the pave- ment and pull the handbrake.
ABS ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM
The ABS with Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBFD) increases thestability and manoevrability of yourvehicle, particularly on poor or slip-pery road surfaces. Note: when changing wheels (tyres
and rims), make sure that these are approved. The anti-lock braking system comes into operation automatically whenthere is a risk of wheel lock.

If the battery is flat and the lever is in position
P, it
will be impossible tochange to another posi-tion.
Normal operation of the ABS may make itself felt by slight vibrationsof the brake pedal. In emergency braking, press very firmly without releasingthe pressure.
EMERGENCY BRAKING
ASSISTANCE SYSTEM
In an emergency, this system enables the optimum braking pressure to be
reached more quickly, thus reducingthe stopping distance. It is triggered by the speed at which the
brake pedal is activated, the effect ofwhich is a reduction in the resistance ofthe pedal and an increase in braking
efficiency.

TRACTION CONTROL (ASR)*
AND DYNAMIC STABILITY
CONTROL (ESP)* These systems are linked and com-
plement the ABS system.
The ASR system optimises drive to prevent the wheels skidding, byacting on the brakes and the engine. It also allows the directional stabilityof the vehicle to be improved onacceleration. If there is a variation between the tra- jectory followed by the vehicle and
that required by the driver, the ESPsystem automatically acts on theengine and the brake of one or morewheels, in order to put the vehicleback on course.
Operation of the ASR and
ESP systemsWhen one of these two sys- tems is operating, this lightflashes.
* During the year Disarming the ESP / ASR systems In certain conditions (vehicle stuck in
mud or snow, or on loose ground...),it could prove useful to disarm theASR system to make the wheelsspin and regain grip.
Press the switch "ESP OFF",
situated on the central part of the fascia.
The switch lights up and theindicator light comes on;the
ESP and ASR systems nolonger act on the brake andengine operation.
They engage again: automatically when the ignition is
switched off,
manually by pressing the switchagain. Operating check
When a malfunction of thesystem occurs, the switchlight flashes and the indica-tor light comes on, accom-panied by an audible signal
and the message "ESP/ASR not
operational" on the multifunction
display.
Contact a PEUGEOT dealer to have the system checked.
YOUR 307 IN DETAIL 89
The ESP system offers increased safety duringnormal driving, but shouldnot incite the driver totake risks or to drive at
high speed. The operation of the system is ensured to the extent to which therecommendations of the manufac-turer regarding the wheels (tyresand wheel rims), the braking com-ponents, the electronic compo-nents and the assembly andrepair procedures within the PEUGEOT network are observed. After an impact, have the system
checked by a PEUGEOT dealer.
