FRONT AIR BAGS These are folded in the centre of the steering wheel for the driver and in
the fascia for the front passenger.
They are deployed simultaneously, except in cases where the air bag isdisarmed. Front air bag malfunctionIf this warning light comes on, accompanied by abuzzer and the message"Air bag fault" on the multi-
function display, contact a
PEUGEOT dealer to have the sys-tem checked.

AIR BAGS The air bags have been designed to maximise the safety of the occupantsin the event of serious collisions;they work in conjunction with theforce limiting seat belts. In the event of a serious collision, the electronic detectors record andanalyse any abrupt deceleration ofthe vehicle: if the triggering thresholdis reached, the air bags inflateinstantly and protect the occupantsof the vehicle. Immediately after the impact, the air
bags deflate rapidly, so that they donot hinder the visibility of the occu-pants nor their possible exit from thevehicle. The air bags will not be deployed in collisions which are not serious, for
which the seat belt is sufficient to
provide maximum protection. Theseriousness of the collision dependson the nature of the obstacle and thespeed of the vehicle at the momentof impact. Air bags only operate when the ignition is switched on. Note: the gas escaping from the air
bags can be a minor irritant.
Disarming the passenger air bag*
To ensure the safety of your child, it is essential to disarm the pas-senger air bag when you install arear-facing child seat on the frontpassenger seat. Otherwise, the child would risk being killed or seriously injured ifthe air bag were to inflate. With the ignition switched of f,
insert the key into the passenger air bag disarming switch 1, turn it
to the "OFF"position, then
remove the key keeping the slotin this position. The air bag warning light on the instrument panel is lit throughoutthe disarming process.

In the "OFF" position, the passenger
air bag will not be triggered in the event of an impact. As soon as the child seat is removed, turn the air bag slot to the"ON" position to re-activate the air
bag and thus ensure the safety ofyour passenger in the event of animpact. Disarming check This is confirmed by an indicator light, accompanied by an audible sig-nal and a message on the multifunc-
tion display.
With the ignition on (2ndnotch), illumination of thiswarning light accompaniedby an audible signal and themessage "Passenger air
bag deactivated" on the multifunc-
tion display, indicates that the pas-senger air bag is disarmed (switch inthe "OFF" position). SIDE AIR BAGS AND
CURTAIN AIR BAGS The side air bags are incorporated in the front and rear seat backs, on thedoor side. The curtain air bags are incorporated into the door pillars and the upperpart of the passenger compartment. They are deployed independently of each other depending on which sidethe collision occurs. Operating check This is confirmed by an indicator light, accompanied by an audible sig-nal and a message on the multi-func-
tion display.
If this indicator light comes on, accompanied by anaudible signal and the mes-sage 'Air bag(s) faulty' ,
contact a PEUGEOT dealer
to have the system checked.

CHANGING A WHEEL
Park the vehicle on level, stable and non-slippery ground.
Apply the handbrake, switch offthe ignition and engage first orreverse gear (position Pfor the
automatic gearbox).
Access to the spare wheel andthe jack in the boot Detach the luggage net.
Lift the boot carpet using the liftinghook. Secure this hook behindthe boot seal. Tools available The following tools are located in the polystyrene holder in the centre ofthe spare wheel: 1 -
Wheelbrace.
2 - Centralising tool.
3 - Wheelbrace extension.
4 - Jack fitted with a system which enables it to be folded or unfol-
ded rapidly.
5 - Removable towing eye.
6 - Alloy wheel trim remover.
7 - Trim cover tool. Removal
For vehicles with alloy wheels fit-ted with wheel trims, pull thecentre trim by using tool 6in one
of the holes.
Loosen the wheel bolts.
Take the jack from the tool kit andfold it by pressing the ends A.

CHANGING A WINDSCREEN WIPER BLADE Placing the wiper blades in the maintenance position Less than one minute after switch-
ing off the ignition, activate thewindscreen wiper stalk to positionthe blades in the centre of thewindscreen (maintenance posi-tion).
Replacing a blade Lift the arm, then unclip the bladeand remove it.
Fit the new blade and fold downthe arm.
To park the blades, switch on theignition and operate the wind-screen wiper stalk.
REMOVING A MAT When removing a mat on the driver's or passenger's side, push back theseat as far as possible and removethe clips.
To remove a rear mat, push the corresponding front seat forward andremove the clip. On refitting, position the mat and
tighten the securing clips fully.
LOAD REDUCTION FUNCTION When driving, certain functions (air conditioning, heated rear screen, heating system for passenger com-partment of diesel vehicles, etc.)
may be switched off temporarily, depending on the level of batterycharge. Reactivation of these functions is automatic, once the battery charge is
sufficient. Note:
at the risk of discharging the
battery, the functions that have been
switched off may be reactivated
manually.
A flat battery prevents the engine from starting.
ECONOMY MODE FUNCTION After the engine has stopped, certain
functions (windscreen wiper, electricwindows, sunroof, rear electric blind, electric seats, audio equipment, tele-phone etc) can only be used for thir-ty minutes, to prevent discharging
the battery.
Once the thirty minutes are over, the message "Economy mode active"
appears on the multiÐfunction dis-play and the active functions are put
on standby. These functions are automaticallyreactivated next time the vehicle isdriven. Note:
if the telephone is being used
when economy mode starts, it will still be possible to finish the call.

- Do not disconnect theterminals while the engine is running.
- Do not recharge the batteries without disconnecting the termi-nals first.
- Close the windows and sunroof completely before disconnecting
the battery.
- Following reconnection of the battery, switch on the ignitionand wait 1 minute before star-ting the engine to permit initiali-sation of the electronic systems.
However, if minor problems per-sist after this operation, contact
a PEUGEOT dealer.
BATTERY
Vehicles fitted with two batteries Certain vehicles, depending on the country where the vehicle is sold, arefitted with two batteries:
- a battery for starting, located in theengine compartment,
- a service battery, located in the boot.
The starter battery has a label sho- wing that the service battery is in theboot. These are special batteries. If one of them needs to be replaced,
contact a PEUGEOT dealer.
To charge the starter battery with a battery charger: remove the style cover to gain
access to the starter battery,
disconnect the battery, Follow the instructions for use given by the battery charger
manufacturer,
reconnect the battery, starting withthe negative (-) terminal,
check that the terminals and theconnectors are clean. If they arecovered with sulphate (whitish orgreenish deposit), disconnect andclean them,
refit the style cover. To start the vehicle from anotherbattery:
remove the style cover to gain
access to the starter battery,
remove the maxi fuse located near
to the starter battery,
connect the red cable to the positi-ve (+) terminals of the two batteries,
connect one end of the green orblack cable to the negative (-) ter-
minal of the additional battery,
connect the other end of the greenor black cable to an earth point onthe vehicle which has broken down,
as far as possible from the battery,
start the engine and let it run,
wait for the engine to return to idlethen disconnect the cables,
drive a few kilometres in order to
recharge the starter battery, thenreplace the maxi fuse near to it,
refit the style cover.
To recharge the service battery,
contact a PEUGEOT dealer.
PRACTICAL INFORMATION 155
If electrical operations are carried out,
disconnect the starter battery and
remove the maxi fuse located next to it.
It is advisable to disconnect
the starter battery and remove the maxi fuse located next to it, if the
vehicle is not to be used for a period of more than one month.
