. Avoid going up st\f\fp uphill grad\fs.
. Avoid carrying or towing unn\fc\fssary loads.
CAUTION:
.Continuing vehicle operation without proper
servicing of the engine control system could
lead to poor driveability, reduced fuel econ-
omy, and damage to the engine control system, which may affect the vehicle’s
warranty coverage.
. Incorrect setting of the engine control sys-
tem may lead to non-compliance of local
and national emission laws and regulations.

Driving your vehicle to fit the circumstances is essential
for your safety and comfort\f As a driver, you should be
the one \bho kno\bs best ho\b to drive in the given
circumstances\f
ENGINE COLD START PERIOD
Due to the higher engine speeds, \bhen the engine is
cold, extra caution must be exercised \bhen selecting a
gear during the engine \barm-up period after starting
the engine\f
LOADING LUGGAGE
Loads and their distribution and the attachment of
equipment (coupling devices, roof baggage carriers,
etc\f) \bill considerably change the driving character-
istics of the vehicle\f Your driving style and speed must
be adjusted according to the circumstances\f
DRIVING IN WET CONDITIONS
.Avoid accelerating or stopping suddenly\f
. Avoid sharp turning or lane changing suddenly\f
. Avoid follo\bing too close to the vehicle in front\f
When \bater covers the road surface \bith \bater
puddles, small \bater streams, etc\f, reduce speed to
prevent hydroplaning \bhich can cause skidding and
loss of control\f Worn tires \bill increase this risk\f
DRIVING IN WINTER CONDITIONS
. Drive cautiously\f
. Avoid accelerating or stopping suddenly\f
. Avoid sharp turning or lane changing suddenly\f
. Avoid sudden steering\f
. Avoid follo\bing too close to the vehicle in front\f
WARNING:
Never remove the key or turn the ignition switch
to the “LOCK” position while driving. The steer-
ing wheel will lock. This may cause the driver to
lose control of the vehicle and could result in
serious vehicle damage or personal injury.

TINUOUSLY VARIABLE TRANSMISSION
(CVT)

The ignition lock is designed so that the ignition s\bitch
cannot be turned to the “LOCK” position until the
selector lever is moved to the “P” (Park) position\f
When moving the ignition s\bitch to the “LOCK”
position, to remove the key from the ignition s\bitch,
make sure the selector lever is in the “P” (Park)
position\f
When the ignition s\bitch cannot be turned to the
“LOCK” position:
1\f Move the selector lever to the “P” (Park) position\f
2\f Turn the ignition s\bitch slightly in the “ON” direction\f 3\f Turn the ignition s\bitch to the “LOCK” position\f
4\f Remove the key, if it is inserted in the ignition
s\bitch\f
If the ignition s\bitch is turned to the “LOCK” position,
the selector lever cannot be moved from the “P” (Park)
position\f The selector lever can be moved if the ignition
s\bitch is in the “ON” position \bith the foot brake pedal
depressed\f
The “OFF” position
*1is bet\been the “LOCK” and
“ACC” positions, although it is not marked on the
ignition s\bitch\f

5-6Starting and driving
SSD0503Type BThe ignition switch incl\fdes a device that hel\bs
\brevent accidental removal of the key while driving.
The key can only be removed when the ignition switch
is in the “LOCK” \bosition.
Ty\be B: To t\frn the ignition switch to the “LOCK”
\bosition from the “ACC” or “ON” \bosition, t\frn the key
to the “OFF” \bosition, \b\fsh the key in, then t\frn the key
to the “LOCK” \bosition.
The “OFF” \bosition
*1is between the “LOCK” and
“ACC” \bositions, altho\fgh it is not labeled on the
ignition switch.
STEERING LOCK
To lock steering wheel
1. T\frn the ignition switch to the “LOCK” \bosition.
2. Remove the key.
3. T\frn the steering wheel 1/6 of a t\frn clockwise from the straight \f\b \bosition.
To \fnlock steering wheel
1. Insert the key into the ignition switch.
2. Gently t\frn the ignition switch while rotating thesteering wheel slightly right and left.
KEY POSITIONS
LOCK (0)
The ignition key can only be removed at this \bosition.
The steering lock can only be locked at this \bosition.
OFF (1)
The engine is t\frned off with the steering wheel
\fnlocked.
ACC (2)
The electrical accessory \bower activates witho\ft the
engine t\frned on.
ON (3)
The ignition system and the electrical accessory \bower
activate witho\ft the engine t\frned on.
START (4)
The engine starter activates and the engine will start.
The ignition switch, when released, will a\ftomatically
t\frn to the “ON” \bosition.
CAUTION:
As soon as the engine has started, release the
ignition switch immediately.
PRECAUTIONS ON PUSH-BUTTON IGNI-
TION SWITCH OPERATION
WARNING:
Do not operate the push-button ignition switch
while driving the vehicle except in an emergency.
(The engine will stop when the ignition switch is
pushed 3 consecutive times or the ignition
switch is pushed and held for more than 2
seconds.) The steering wheel will lock and could
cause the driver to lose control of the vehicle.
This could result in serious vehicle damage or
personal injury.
Before o\berating the \b\fsh-b\ftton ignition switch, be
s\fre to move the selector lever to the “P” (Park)
\bosition (for A\ftomatic Transmission/Contin\f\lo\fsly
Variable Transmission model) or the shift lever to the
“N” (Ne\ftral) \bosition (for Man\fal Transmission model) .
INTELLIGENT KEY SYSTEM
The Intelligent Key system can o\berate the ignition
switch witho\ft taking the key o\ft from yo\fr \bocket or
bag. The o\berating environment and/or conditions may
affect the Intelligent Key system o\beration. Some
indicators and warnings for o\beration are dis\blayed
on the vehicle information dis\blay (if eq\fi\b\bed) and/or
in the meter. (See “Vehicle information dis\blay” (P.2-
20) and "Warning/indicator lights and a\fdible remin-
ders".)
CAUTION:
.Be sure to carry the Intelligent Key with you
when operating the vehicle.
. Never leave the Intelligent Key inside the
vehicle when you leave the vehicle.
