fue\f fi\fter.
The fue\f fi\fter can be accessed after removin\b the fuse
box and the battery from the vehic\fe. Therefore,
RENAULT recommends that you contact a RENAULT
dea\fer for servicin\b.

Self-adjusting brakes
\four vehi\ble is equipped with self-adjusting brakes.
The brakes are adjusted by the foot brake pedal
operation.
Brake pad wear indi\bator
The dis\b brake pads on your vehi\ble have audible wear
indi\bators. When a brake pad requires repla\bement, it
will make a high pit\bhed s\braping or s\bree\bhing sound
when the vehi\ble is in motion. The noise will be heard
whether or not the foot brake pedal is depressed. Have
the brakes \bhe\bked as soon as possible if the wear
indi\bator sound is heard.
Under some driving or \blimate \bonditions, o\b\basional
brake squeaks, squeals or other noises may be heard.
O\b\basional brake noise during light to moderate stops
is normal and does not affe\bt the fun\btion or
performan\be of the brake system.
The rear drum brakes do not have audible wear
indi\bators. Should you ever hear an unusually loud
noise from the rear drum brakes, have them \bhe\bked
as soon as possible by a RENAULT dealer.
Proper brake inspe\btion intervals should be followed.
For additional information, see a separate maintenan\be
booklet.
BRAKE BOOSTER
Che\bk the brake booster fun\btion as follows:
1. With the engine off, depress and release the footbrake pedal several times. When the foot brake
pedal movement (distan\be of travel) remains the
same from one pedal appli\bation to the next,
\bontinue on to the next step.
2. While depressing the foot brake pedal, start the engine. The pedal height should drop a little. 3. With the foot brake pedal depressed, stop the
engine. Keep the pedal depressed for about 30
se\bonds. The pedal height should not \bhange.
4. Run the engine for 1 minute without depressing the foot brake pedal, then turn it off. Depress the
foot brake pedal several times. The pedal travel
distan\be will de\brease gradually with ea\bh de-
pression as the va\buum is released from the
booster.
If the brakes do not operate properly, have the brakes
\bhe\bked by a RENAULT dealer.
WARNING:
. Use only new fluid from a sealed container.
Old, inferior, or contaminated fluid may
damage the brake system. The use of
improper fluids can damage the brake
system and affect the vehicle’ s stopping
ability.
. Clean the filler cap before removing.
. Brake fluid is poisonous and should be
stored carefully in marked containers out
of the reach of children.
CAUTION:
Do not spill the fluid on painted surfaces. This
will damage the paint. If fluid is spilled, wash it
off with plenty of water immediately.
SDI0890
Che\bk the fluid level in the reservoir. If the brake fluid is
below the MIN line, the brake warning light will
illuminate. Add brake fluid up to the MAX line. (See
“Re\bommended fuel/lubri\bants and \bapa\bities” (P.9-2)
for re\bommended types of brake fluid.)
If the brake fluid must be added frequently, the brake

system should be thoroughly checked by a REN\fULT

.Use only new fluid from a sealed container.
Old, inferior, or contaminated fluid may
damage the clutch system.
. Clean the filler cap before removing.
. Clutch fluid is poisonous and should be
stored carefully in marked containers out of
the reach of children.
CAUTION:
Do not spill the clutch fluid on painted surfaces.
This will damage the paint. If clutch fluid is
spilled, wash it off with plenty of water immedi-
ately.
SDI0890
Check the fluid level in the reservoir\b If the fluid is
below the MIN line, add fluid up to the M\fX line\b (See
“Recommended fuel/lubricants and capacities” (P\b9-2)
for the recommended types of fluid\b)
If the fluid must be added frequently, the clutch system
should be thoroughly checked by a REN\fULT dealer\b Contact a REN\fULT dealer if checking or replacement
is required\b
CAUTION:
.
Use only fluids approved by our technical
department. Do not mix with other fluids.
. Using automatic transmission fluid other
than fluids approved by our technical de-
partment will cause deterioration in drive-
ability and transmission durability, and may
damage the transmission, which is not
covered by the warranty.

WARNING:
Operating the engine with the air cleaner filter
off can cause you or others to be burned. The air
cleaner filter not only cleans the intake air, it
also stops flame if the engine backfires. If the air
cleaner filter is not installed and the engine
backfires, you could be burned. Never drive with
the air cleaner filter off. Be cautious working on
the engine when the air cleaner filter is off.

SD\b1480Type A
JVM0065XType BCheck the fl\fid level in each cell. The battery fl\fid level
sho\fld be between the UPPER LEVEL*1and
LOWER LEVEL*2lines.
\bf it is necessary to add fl\fid, add only demineralized/
distilled water to bring the level to the indicator in each
filler opening. Do not overfill.
1. Remove the cell pl\fgs
*A, if eq\fipped.
2. Add demineralized/disti\llled water \fp to the UPPER LEVEL
*1line.
3. Replace and tighten the cell pl\fgs.
. Vehicles operated in high temperat\fres or \fnder
severe conditions req\fire freq\fent checks of the
battery fl\fid level.
. Keep the battery s\frface clean and dry. Clean the
battery with a sol\ftion of baking soda and water.
. Make certain the terminal connections are clean
and sec\frely tightened.
. \bf the vehicle is not to be \fsed for more than 30
days, disconnect the negative (í) battery terminal
cable to prevent battery discharge.
. For a maintenance free battery (for Type B) it is not
req\fired to check the fl\fid level. However,
RENAULT recommends to vis\fally check the green indicator
*Bstat\fs periodically. \bf the color
of the indicator is changed, please contact a
RENAULT dealer as soon as possible.
For model with Stop/Start (\bdling Stop) System, see
“J\fmp starting” (P.6-8) .
J\fmp starting
\bf j\fmp starting is necessary, see “J\fmp starting” (P.6-
8) . \bf the engine does not start by j\fmp starting or the
battery does not charge, the battery may have to be
replaced. Contact a RENAULT dealer for replacing the
battery.

CAUTION:
. Be careful not to allow children to swallow
the battery and removed parts.
. An improperly disposed battery can harm
the environment. Always confirm local reg-
ulations for battery disposal.
. When changing batteries, do not let dust or
oil get on the components.
. There is danger of explosion if lithium
battery is incorrectly replaced. Replace only
with the same or equivalent type.
