WARNING:
. Fuel is extremely flammable and highly
explosive under certain conditions. You
could be burned or seriously injured if it is
misused or mishandled. Always stop the
engine and do not smoke or allow open
flames or sparks near the vehicle when
refueling.
. Fuel may be under pressure. Turn the cap a
half of a turn, and wait for any “hissing”
sound to stop to prevent fuel from spraying
out and possibly causing personal injury.
Then remove the cap.
. Use only an original equipment type fuel
filler cap as a replacement. It has a built-in
safety valve needed for proper operation of
the fuel system and emission control sys-
tem. An incorrect cap can result in a serious
malfunction and possible injury.

Adjust t\fe air flo\b direction of t\fe ventilators by
opening, closing or rotating.
WARNING:
.The heater and air conditioner operate only
when the engine is running.
. Never leave children or adults who would
normally require the support of others alone
in the vehicle. Pets should not be left alone
either. They could unknowingly activate
switches or controls and inadvertently be-
come involved in a serious accident and
injure themselves. On hot, sunny days,
temperatures in a closed vehicle could
quickly become high enough to cause se-
vere or possibly fatal injuries to people or
animals.
. Do not use the recirculation mode for long
periods as it may cause the interior air to
become stale and the windows to fog up.
. Do not adjust the heating and air condition-
ing controls while driving so that full atten-
tion may be given to vehicle operation.
T\fe \feater and air conditioner operate \b\fen t\fe
engine is running. T\fe air blo\ber \bill operate \b\fen t\fe
ignition s\bitc\f is in t\fe “ON” position even if t\fe
engine is turned off.
NOTE:
. Odors from inside and outside the vehicle
can build up in the air conditioner unit. Odor
can enter the passenger compartment
through the vents.
. When parking, set the heater and air condi-
tioner controls to turn off air recirculation to
allow fresh air into the passenger compart-
ment. This should help reduce odors inside
the vehicle. For model with Idling Stop System (if equipped
for Thailand):
W\fen t\fe air conditioner or rear defogger (if equipped)
is turned on, t\fe Idling Stop System \bill not be
activated.
For model with Stop/Start System (if equipped
for Europe):
T\fe Stop/Start System \bill not stop t\fe engine under
t\fe follo\bing conditions:
.
T\fe front defogger mode is on. (automatic air
conditioner)
. T\fe air flo\b control dial is in t\fe front defogger
position. (manual air conditioner)
. T\fe rear \bindo\b defogger mode is on.
W\file t\fe engine is stopped by t\fe Stop/Start System,
taking one of t\fe follo\bing actions \bill automatically
start t\fe engine:
. Turn t\fe front defogger mode on. (automatic air
conditioner)
. Turn t\fe air flo\b control dial to t\fe front defogger
position. (manual air conditioner)
. Turn t\fe rear \bindo\b defogger mode on.
W\fen t\fe engine is stopped by t\fe Stop/Start System,
performance of t\fe \feater and air conditioner may be
reduced to minimize t\fe fuel consumption. For t\fe best
\feating and air conditioning performance, restart t\fe
engine by pus\fing t\fe Stop/Start System OFF s\bitc\f.

During the first 1,600 km (1,000 miles\f , follow these
recommen\bations to obtain maximum engine perfor-
mance an\b ensure the future reliability an\b economy of
your new vehicle. Failure to follow these recommen\ba-
tions may result in shortene\b engine life an\b re\buce\b
engine performance.
.Do not \brive at a constant spee\b, either fast or
slow, for long perio\bs of time.
. Do not run the engine over 4,000 rpm (HR12 or
HR15 engine\f or 2,500 rpm (K9K engine\f .
. Do not accelerate at full throttle in any gear.
. Do not start quickly.
. Do not brake har\b as much as possible.WARNING:
The driving characteristics of your vehicle will
change remarkably by any additional load and
its distribution, as well as by adding optional
equipment (trailer coupling, roof racks, etc.) .
Your driving style and speed must be adjusted
according to the circumstances. Especially when
carrying heavy loads, your speed must be
reduced adequately.
.Make sure the area aroun\b the vehicle is clear.
. Visually inspect tires for their appearance an\b
con\bition. Measure an\b check the tire pressure for
proper inflation.
. Check that all win\bows an\b lights are clean.
. A\bjust the seat an\b hea\b restraint positions.
. A\bjust the insi\be an\b outsi\be rearview mirror
positions.
. Fasten your seat belt an\b ask all passengers to \bo
the same.
. Check that all \boors are close\b.
. Check the operation of the warning lights when
the ignition switch is turne\b to the “ON” position.
. Maintenance items in the “8. Maintenance an\b \bo-
it-yourself” section shoul\b be checke\b perio\bi-
cally.
WARNING:
.Never leave children or adults who would
normally require the support of others alone
in your vehicle. Pets should not be left alone
either. They could unknowingly activate
switches or controls and inadvertently be-
come involved in a serious accident and
injure themselves. On hot, sunny days,
temperatures in a closed vehicle could
quickly become high enough to cause se-
vere or possibly fatal illness to people or
animals.
. Properly secure all luggage to help prevent it
from sliding or shifting. Do not place lug-
gage higher than the seatbacks. In a sudden
stop or collision, unsecured luggage could
cause personal injury.
EXHAUST GAS (carbon monoxi\be\f
WARNING:
.Do not breathe exhaust gas; it contains
colorless and odorless carbon monoxide.
Carbon monoxide is dangerous. It can cause
unconsciousness or death.
. If you suspect that exhaust fumes are
entering the vehicle, drive with all windows
fully open, and have the vehicle inspected
immediately.
. Do not run the engine in closed spaces such
as a garage.
. Do not park the vehicle with the engine
running for an extended period of time.

5-4Starting and driving
.Keep the back door closed while driving,
otherwise exhaust gas could be drawn into
the passenger compartment. If you must
drive with the back door open, follow these
precautions:
— Open all the windows.
— Turn the air recirculation mode off and
set the fan speed control to the highest
level to circulate the air.
. If electrical wiring or other cable connec-
tions must pass to a trailer through the seal
of the back door or the body, follow the
manufacturer’s recommendation to prevent
carbon monoxide entry into the vehicle.
. If a special body or other equipment is
added for recreational or other usage, follow
the manufacturer’s recommendation to pre-
vent carbon monoxide entry into the vehicle.
(Some recreational vehicle appliances such
as stoves, refrigerators, heaters, etc. may
also generate carbon monoxide.)
. The exhaust system and body should be
inspected by a qualified mechanic whenever:
— Your vehicle is raised while being ser-
viced.
— You suspect that exhaust fumes are entering into the passenger compart-
ment.
— You notice a change in the sound of the exhaust system.
— You have had an accident involving damage to the exhaust system, under-
body, or rear of the vehicle.THREE-WAY CATALYST (gaso\fine engine
\bode\f)
WARNING:
. The exhaust gas and the exhaust system are
very hot. Keep people, animals and flam-
mable materials away from the exhaust
system components.
. Do not stop or park the vehicle over
flammable materials such as dry grass,
wastepaper or rags. They may ignite and
cause a fire.
The three-way cata\fyst is an e\bission contro\f device
insta\f\fed in the exhaust syste\b. Exhaust gas in the
three-way cata\fyst is burned at high te\bperatures to
he\fp reduce po\f\futants.
CAUTION:
. Do not use leaded gasoline. (See “Recom-
mended fuel/lubricants and capacities” (P.9-
2) .) Deposits from leaded gasoline seriously
reduce the ability of the three-way catalyst
to help reduce exhaust pollutants and/or
damage the three-way catalyst.
. Keep your engine tuned up. Malfunctions in
the ignition, fuel injection, or electrical
systems may cause overrich fuel to flow into
the three-way catalyst, causing it to over-
heat. Do not keep driving if the engine
misfires, or if noticeable loss of performance
or other unusual operating conditions are
detected. Have the vehicle inspected
promptly by a RENAULT dealer.
. Avoid driving with an extremely low fuel
level. Running out of fuel could cause the engine to misfire, damaging the three-way
catalyst.
. Do not race the engine while warming it up.
. Do not push or tow your vehicle to start the
engine.
