normally require the support of others alone
in the vehicle. Pets should not be left alone
either. They could unknowingly activate
switches or controls and inadvertently be-
come involved in a serious accident and
injure themselves. On hot, sunny days,
temperatures in a closed vehicle could
quickly become high enough to cause se-
vere or possibly fatal injuries to people or
animals.
. Do not use the recirculation mode for long
periods as it may cause the interior air to
become stale and the windows to fog up.
. Do not adjust the heating and air condition-
ing controls while driving so that full atten-
tion may be given to vehicle operation.

ignition s\bitc\f is in t\fe “ON” position even if t\fe
engine is turned off.
NOTE:
. Odors from inside and outside the vehicle
can build up in the air conditioner unit. Odor
can enter the passenger compartment
through the vents.
. When parking, set the heater and air condi-
tioner controls to turn off air recirculation to
allow fresh air into the passenger compart-
ment. This should help reduce odors inside
the vehicle. For model with Idling Stop System (if equipped
for Thailand):
W\fen t\fe air conditioner or rear defogger (if equipped)
is turned on, t\fe Idling Stop System \bill not be
activated.
For model with Stop/Start System (if equipped
for Europe):
T\fe Stop/Start System \bill not stop t\fe engine under
t\fe follo\bing conditions:

T\fe front defogger mode is on. (automatic air
conditioner)
. T\fe air flo\b control dial is in t\fe front defogger
position. (manual air conditioner)
. T\fe rear \bindo\b defogger mode is on.

taking one of t\fe follo\bing actions \bill automatically

W\fen t\fe engine is stopped by t\fe Stop/Start System,
performance of t\fe \feater and air conditioner may be
reduced to minimize t\fe fuel consumption. For t\fe best
\feating and air conditioning performance, restart t\fe
engine by pus\fing t\fe Stop/Start System OFF s\bitc\f.

Temperature control:
Turn the temperature control dial to set the desired
temperature. Turn the dial between the middle and the
ri\fht position to select the hot temperature. Turn the
dial between the middle and the left position to select
the cool temperature.
Heater operation
Heating:
This mode is used to direct heated air to the foot
outlets.

Bi-level heating:
This mode directs cool air from the side and center
vents and warm air from the foot outlets. When the
temperature control dial is turned to the maximum hot
or cool position, the air between the ventilators and the
foot outlets is the same temperature.

Air conditioner operation (if equipped)
The air conditioner system should be operated for
approximately 10 minutes at least once a month. This
helps prevent dama\fe to the air conditioner system
due to the lack of lubrication.
Cooling:
This mode is used to cool and dehumidify the air.

2. Turn the air flow control dial to the “

desired position.
4. Push the “A/C” button on. (The “A/C” indicator li\fht will illuminate.)

temperature and the fan speed to the maximum

the air conditioner will automatically turn on when
the outside air temperature is a\fove í28C (288F)
to defog the windshield. The air recirculation mode
will automatically turn off. The outside air circula-
tion mode “

defogging performance.
Manual operation
The manual mode can \fe used to control the heater
and air conditioner to your desired settings. (“MAN-
UAL” will appear on the display.)
To turn off the heater and air conditioner, push the
“OFF” \futton. Fan speed control:
Push the fan speed control “

the “” \futton to increase the fan speed. Push the
“” \futton to decrease the fan speed.
Push the “AUTO” \futton to change the fan speed to
the automatic mode.
Air flow control:

— Air flows mainly from the foot outlets
— Air flows from the defogger outlets and footoutlets.
Temperature control:

SERVICING AIR CON\bITIONER
WARNING:
The air conditioner system contains refrigerant
under high pressure. To avoid personal injury,
any air conditioner service should be done only
by an experienced technician with the proper
equipment.
The air conditioner system in your vehicle is charged
with a refrigerant designed with the environment in
mind.
This refrigerant will not harm the earth’s ozone
layer. However, it may contri\fute in a small part to
glo\fal warming.
Special charging equipment and lu\fricant are required
when servicing your vehicle’s air conditioner. Using
improper refrigerants or lu\fricants will cause severe
damage to the air conditioner system. (See “Air
conditioner system refrigerant and lu\fricant” (P.9-4) .)
A RENAULT dealer will \fe a\fle to service your
environmentally friendly air conditioner system.

System malfunction

If the “S\bSTEM ERROR” display appears and/or the
ON indicator light on the parking space measurement
switch blinks, have the system checked by a RENAULT
dealer.\bour vehicle was designed to be used to carry
passengers and luggage. RENAULT does not recom-
mend trailer towing, because it places additional loads
on your vehicle’s engine, drivetrain, steering, braking,
and other systems.
CAUTION:
Vehicle damage resulting from towing a trailer is
not covered by the warranty.
WARNING:
.
If the engine is not running or is turned off
while driving, the power assist for the
steering will not work. The steering will be
harder to operate.
. When the electric power steering warning
light illuminates with the engine running, the
power assist for the steering will cease
operation. You will still have control of the
vehicle but the steering will be harder to
operate.
The electric power steering system is designed to
provide power assist while driving to operate the
steering wheel with light force.
When the steering wheel is operated repeatedly or
continuously while parking or driving at a very low
speed, the power assist for the steering wheel will be
reduced. This is to prevent overheating of the electric
power steering system and protect it from getting
damaged. While the power assist is reduced, steering
wheel operation will become heavy. When the
temperature of the electric power steering system
goes down, the power assist level will return to normal.
Avoid repeating such steering wheel operations that
could cause the electric power steering system to
overheat.
\bou may hear a fricative sound when the steering
wheel is operated quickly. However, this is not a
malfunction.
If the electric power steering warning light
illuminates while the engine is running, it may indicate
the electric power steering system is not functioning
properly and may need servicing. Have the electric
power steering system checked by a RENAULT dealer.

When the electric power steering warning light

control of the vehicle\b However, greater steering effort
is needed, especially in sharp t\frns and at low speeds\bThe brake system has two separate hydra\flic circ\fits\b If
one circ\fit malf\fnctions, yo\f will still have braking
ability at two wheels\b
BRAKE PRECAUTIONS
Vac\f\fm assisted brakes
The brake booster aids braking by \fsing engine
vac\f\fm\b If the engine stops, yo\f can stop the vehicle
by depressing the foot brake pedal\b However, greater
foot press\fre on the foot brake pedal will be req\fired
to stop the vehicle\b The stopping distance will be
longer\b
If the engine is not r\fnning or is t\frned off while driving,
the power assisted brakes will not f\fnction\b Braking
will be harder\b
WARNING:
Do not coast with the engine stopped.
When the brake pedal is depressed slowly and firmly,
yo\f may hear a clicking noise and feel a slight
p\flsation\b This is normal and indicates that the Brake
Assist System is operating\b
Using brakes
Avoid resting yo\fr foot on the foot brake pedal while
driving\b This will overheat the brakes, wear o\ft the
brake linings/pads faster, and increase f\fel cons\fmp-
tion\b
To help red\fce brake wear and to prevent the brakes
from overheating, red\fce speed and downshift to a
lower gear before going down a slope or long grade\b
Overheated brakes may red\fce braking performance

Wet brakes
When the vehicle is washed or driven thro\fgh water,

while lightly depressing the foot brake pedal to heat \fp

When starting on a steep grade, it is sometimes

Do not attempt to start the engine by p\fshing the

CAUTION:
.Automatic Transmission (AT)/Continuously
Variable Transmission (CVT) model cannot
be started by pushing. Attempting to do so
may cause damage to the transmission.
. Three-way catalyst equipped model should
not be started by pushing. Attempting to do
so may cause damage to the catalyst.
. Never try to start the engine by towing.
When the engine starts, the forward surge
could cause the vehicle to collide with the
towing vehicle.
. Stop/Start (Idling Stop) System equipped
model cannot be started by pushing the
vehicle.
WARNING:
.Never continue driving if your vehicle over-
heats. Doing so could cause a vehicle fire.
. Never open the hood if steam is coming out.
. Never remove the radiator cap while the
engine is hot. If the radiator cap is removed
when the engine is hot, pressurized hot
water will spurt out and possibly cause
burning, scalding or serious injury.
. If steam or coolant is coming from the
engine, stand clear of the vehicle to prevent
getting burned.
. Be careful not to allow your hands, hair,
jewelry or clothing to come into contact with,
or to get caught in the cooling fan or drive
belts. The engine cooling fan will start at any
time.
If yo\fr vehicle is overheating (indicated by the high
temperat\fre indicator) , or if yo\f feel a lack of engine
power, detect \fn\fs\fal noise, etc\b, take the following
steps:
1\b Safely move the vehicle off the road away from traffic\b
2\b T\frn on the hazard indicator flasher lights\b
3\b Apply the parking brake\b
4\b A\ftomatic Transmission (AT)/Contin\fo\fsly Vari- able Transmission (CVT) model: Move the selector
lever to the “P” (Park) position\b

CHANGING ENGINE COOLANT
Contact a RENAULT dea\fer if rep\facement is required.
Major engine coo\fing system repair shou\fd be per-
formed by a RENAULT dea\fer. The service procedures
can be found in the appropriate RENAULT Service
Manua\f.
Improper servicing can resu\ft in reduced heater
performance and engine overheating.
WARNING:
. To avoid being scalded, never change the
coolant when the engine is hot.
. Never remove the radiator cap when the
engine is hot. Serious burns could be caused
by high pressure fluid escaping from the
radiator.

If you have a flat tire, see \fFlat tire” (\b.6-2) .
TIRE INFLATION \bRESSURE
\beriodically check the pressure of the tires, including
the spare. An incorrect tire pressure may adversely
affect tire life and vehicle handling. The tire pressure
should be checked when tires are COLD. Tires are
considered COLD after the vehicle has been parked
for 3 or more hours, or driven less than 1.6 km (1 mile) .
COLD tire pressures are shown on the tire placard.
(See \fVehicle identification” (\b.9-7) for the location of
the tire placard.)
Insufficient pressure can lead to an overheating of the
tire and subsequent internal damage. At high speeds,
this could result in tread separation and even bursting
of the tire.
TY\bES OF TIRES
CAUTION:
When changing or replacing tires, be sure all
four tires are of the same type (that is, summer,
all season or snow) and construction. A RE-
NAULT dealer may be able to help you with
information about tire type, size, speed rating
and availability.
Replacement tires may have a lower speed rating than
the factory equipped tires, and they may not match the
potential maximum vehicle speed. Never exceed the
maximum speed rating of the tire.
All season tires
RENAULT specifies all season tires on some models to
provide good performance all year, including snowy
and icy road conditions. All season tires are identified
by ALL SEASON and/or M&S on the tire sidewall.
Snow tires have better snow traction than all season
tires and may be more appropriate in some areas.
Summer tires
RENAULT specifies summer tires on some models to
provide superior performance on dry roads. Summer
tire performance is substantially reduced in snow and
ice. Summer tires do not have the tire traction rating
M&S on the tire sidewall.
If you plan to operate your vehicle in snowy or icy
conditions, RENAULT recommends the use of snow or
all season tires on all four wheels.
Snow tires
If snow tires are needed, it is necessary to select tires
equivalent in size and load rating to the original
equipment tires. If you do not, it can adversely affect
the safety and handling of your vehicle.
Generally, snow tires have lower speed ratings than
factory equipped tires and may not match the potential
maximum vehicle speed. Never exceed the maximum
speed rating of the tire. If you install snow tires, they
must be the same size, brand, construction and tread
pattern on all four wheels.
For additional traction on icy roads, studded tires may
be used. However, some states and provinces prohibit
their use. Check local, state and provincial laws before
installing studded tires. Skid and traction capabilities
of studded snow tires on wet or dry surfaces may be
poorer than that of non-studded snow tires.
TIRE CHAINS
Use of tire chains may be prohibited according to
location. Check the local laws before installing tire
chains. When installing tire chains, make sure that they
are of proper size for the tires on your vehicle and are
installed according to the chain manufacturer’s in-
structions.
Use chain tensioners when recommended by the tire
chain manufacturer to ensure a tight fit. Loose end links
of the tire chains must be secured or removed to
prevent the possibility of whipping action damage to
the fenders or underbody. If possible, avoid fully
loading your vehicle when using tire chains. In addition,
drive at a reduced speed. Otherwise, your vehicle may
be damaged and/or vehicle handling and performance
may be adversely affected.
Tire chains must be installed only on the front wheels
and not on the rear wheels. Never install tire chains on
a T-type spare tire (TEM\bORARY USE ONLY) . Do not
use the chains on dry roads.
TIRE ROTATION

RENAULT recommends that tires be rotated every
10,000 km (6,000 miles) . However, the timing for tire
rotation may vary according to your driving habits and

Do not use leaded gasoline. Using leaded gaso-
line will damage the three-way catalyst.
Except for Europe, Thaila\fd a\fd Chi\fa: Use UN-
LEADED REGULAR gasoli\fe of at least 91 octa\fe
(RON) .
For Europe: Use UNLEADED PREMIUM gasoli\fe of at
least 95 octa\fe (RON) .
If u\fleaded pre\biu\b gasoli\fe is \fot used, UNLEADED
REGULAR gasoli\fe with a\f octa\fe rati\fg of at least 91
(RON) \bay be used at slightly reduced perfor\ba\fce.
However, for \baxi\bu\b vehicle perfor\ba\fce a\fd the
best driveability, the use of u\fleaded pre\biu\b gasoli\fe
is reco\b\be\fded.
For Thaila\fd: Use UNLEADED REGULAR gasoli\fe or
gasohol (up to E20*) of at least 91 octa\fe (RON) .
*: Gasohol is alcohol ble\fded gasoli\fe. For exa\bple,
“E20” is a \bixture of approxi\bately 20% fuel etha\fol
a\fd 80% u\fleaded gasoli\fe.
For Chi\fa: Use UNLEADED REGULAR gasoli\fe of at
least 93 octa\fe (RON) .
Your vehicle co\bplies with GB18352.3-2005. Use
u\fleaded gasoli\fe with a\f octa\fe rati\fg 93 (RON) or

co\bplia\ft. If other types of gasoli\fe are used, it will
reduce the perfor\ba\fce of the vehicle’s e\bissio\f
