7. Lower the wip er arm. Battery
WARNING
Before beginning work on or near any battery, be sure to extin-
guish all cigarettes, matches, and lighters. Never expose a bat- tery to an open flame or electric sparks. Batteries give off a gaswhich is highly flammable and explosive. For safety, in case an explosion does occur, wear eye protec-
tion or shield your eyes when working near any battery. Never
lean over a battery. Do not let battery fluid contact eyes, skin, fabrics, or paint be-
cause battery fluid is a corrosive acid. If battery fluid gets on yourskin or in your eyes, immediately flush the area with water thor-
oughly. Seek medical help immediately if acid has entered theeyes.If battery fluid is accidentally swallowed, immediately drink a
large amount of milk or water, and seek medical attention
immediately. To lessen the risk of sparks, remove rings, metal watchbands,

and other metal jewelry. Never allow metal tools to contact the
positive battery terminal and anything connected to it WHILE youare at the same time in contact with any other metallic portion ofthe vehicle because a short circuit will result.
Keep everyone including children away from the battery.
Charge the battery in a well-ventilated area.
CAUTION
Never use more than 10 amperes when charging the battery be-
cause it will shorten battery life.
It is unnec essary to p eriod ic ally c hec k the b attery fluid level or p eriod i-
c ally refill with d istilled water. Fuses
CAUTION
Never replace a fuse with one having a higher rating or with mate-
rial other than a fuse because serious damage or a fire could re-sult.

eng ine c omp artment. The fuse p uller and sp are fuses are stored in the
main fuse b ox c over in the eng ine c omp artment.
If any lig hts, ac c essories or other elec tric al c ont rols d o not op erate, in-
sp ec t the c orresp ond ing fuse. If a fuse has b lown, rep lac e it.

Spare fuses
1. Turn the ig nition switc h to the “LOCK ” p osition and turn off all elec tri-
c al ac c essories.
2. Remove the c over.
(For b ehind the c oin tray: op en the c oin tray and p ull it horizontally to
remove it.)
3. Determine whic h fuse may b e b lown. The b ac k sid e of eac h fuse b ox
c over and the “Fuse and c irc uits ” sec tion in c hap ter 12 in this manual
show the c irc uit for eac h fuse.

5. Insp ec t the fuse. If it has b lown, rep lac e it wit
h a sp are fuse of the
same rating .
6. If the same fuse b lows ag ain, this ind ic ates that its system has a
p rob lem. Contac t your SUBARU d ealer for rep airs.
Main fuse and fusible link

The main fuses and fusib le link are d esig ned to mel t d uring an overload
to p revent d amag e to the wiring harness and elec tri c al eq uip ment.
Chec k the main fuses and fusib le link if any elec tr ic al c omp onent fails to
op erate (exc ep t the starter motor) and other fuses are g ood . A melted
main fuse or fusib le link must b e rep lac ed . Use onl y rep lac ements with
the same sp ec ified rating as the melted main fuse o r fusib le link. If a
main fuse or fusib le link b lows after it is rep lac e d , have the elec tric al sys-
tem c hec ked b y your nearest SUBARU d ealer.
Installation of accessories
Always c onsult your SUBARU d ealer b efore installing fog lig hts or any
other elec tric al eq uip ment in your vehic le. Suc h ac c essories may c ause
the elec tronic system to malfunc tion if they are in c orrec tly installed or if
they are not suited for the vehic le.

Headlight
CAUTION
Halogen headlight bulbs become very hot while in use. If you touch the bulb surface with bare hands or greasy gloves, fingerprints or grease on the bulb surface develop into hot spots, caus-ing the bulb to break. If there are finger prints or grease on thebulb surface, wipe them away with a soft cloth moistened with al-cohol.
NOTE If headlight aiming is required, consult your SUBARU dealer for proper adjustment of the headlight aim. For GT and OUTBACK models

3. Remove the b ulb from the head lig ht assemb ly.
4. Install the new b ulb .
5. Install the b ulb hold er in the head lig ht assemb ly b y turning it c loc k-
wise until it loc ks.
6. Remove the elec tric al c onnec tor.
Front fog light (if equipped)
It may b e d iffic ult to rep lac e the b ulb s. Have your SUBARU d ealer
rep lac e the b ulb s if nec essary. Front turn signal light, parking light and side marker light
The head lig ht assemb ly must b e removed b efore the f ront turn sig nal
lig ht and p arking lig ht b ulb s c an b e rep lac ed . Whe n the head lig ht as-
semb ly has b een removed and then reinstalled , it ma y b ec ome nec es-
sary to make a head lig ht aiming ad justment. After a b ulb has b een re-
p lac ed , it is rec ommend ed that the head lig ht aiming ad justment b e

of and the front of the head lig ht assemb ly using a p hillip s sc rewd river or
an op en-end wrenc h.
2. Move the head lig ht assemb ly forward .

3. Remove the b ulb soc ket from the head lig ht assemb l y b y turning it
c ounterc loc kwise.
4. Remove the b ulb from the soc ket b y p ushing it and turning c ounter-
c loc kwise. Install a new b ulb in the soc ket.
5. Set the b ulb soc ket into the head lig ht assemb ly a nd turn it c loc kwise
until it loc ks.
6. Set the head lig ht assemb ly into the vehic le b od y. Tig hten the mount-
ing sc rews.
