Jump starting
WARNING
Battery fluid is SULFURIC ACID. Do not let it come in contact
with the eyes, skin, clothing or the vehicle. If battery fluid gets on you, thoroughly flush the exposed area
with water immediately. Get medical help if the fluid has enteredyour eyes. If battery fluid is accidentally swallowed, immediately drink a
large amount of milk or water, and obtain immediate medicalhelp.
Keep everyone including children away from the battery. The gas generated by a battery explodes if a flame or spark is
brought near it. Do not smoke or light a match while jump start-ing. Never attempt jump starting if the discharged battery is frozen.
It could cause the battery to burst or explode. Whenever working on or around a battery, always wear suit-
able eye protectors, and remove metal objects such as rings,
bands or other metal jewelry. Be sure the jumper cables and clamps on them do not have
loose or missing insulation.Do not jump start unless cables in suitable condition are avail-able. A running engine can be dangerous. Keep your fingers, hands,
clothing, hair and tools away from the cooling fan, belts and anyother moving engine parts. Removing rings, watches and ties isadvisable.

tery, the vehic le may b e jump started b y c onnec ting your b attery to
another b attery (c alled the b ooster b attery) with j ump er c ab les.
Jump starting is d ang erous if it d one inc orrec tly. If you are unsure ab out

Washing
CAUTION
When washing the vehicle, the brakes may get wet. As a result,
the brake stopping distance will be longer. To dry the brakes, drive the vehicle at a safe speed while lightly pressing the brakepedal to heat up the brakes. Do not wash the engine compartment and areas adjacent to it.
If water enters the engine air intake, electrical parts or the power
steering fluid reservoir, it will cause engine trouble or faulty
power steering respectively.
The b est way to p reserve your vehic le ’s b eauty is freq uent washing .
Wash the vehic le at least onc e a month to avoid c on tamination b y road
g rime.
Wash d irt off with a wet sp ong e and p lenty of lukew arm or c old water. Do
not wash the vehic le with hot water and in d irec t s unlig ht.
Salt, c hemic als, insec ts, tar, soot and b ird d rop p i ng s should b e washed
off b y using a lig ht d eterg ent, as req uired . If you use a lig ht d eterg ent,
make c ertain that it is a neutral d eterg ent. Do not use strong soap or
c hemic al d eterg ents. All c leaning ag ents should b e p romp tly flushed
from the surfac e and not allowed to d ry there. Rins e the vehic le thor-
oug hly with p lenty of lukewarm water. Wip e the rema ining water off with a
c hamois or soft c loth. NOTE When having your vehicle washed in an automatic car wash, make
sure beforehand that the car wash is of suitable type. If the vehicle
is equipped with a rear/roof spoiler, it may be damaged by car washbrushes or other equipment.

Promp tly wip e the aluminum wheels c lean of any kind of g rime or
ag ent. If d irt is left on too long , it may b e d iffi c ult to c lean off.
Do not use soap c ontaining g rit to c lean the wheels . Be sure to use a
neutral c leaning ag ent, and later rinse thoroug hly with water. Do not
c lean the wheels with a stiff b rush or exp ose them to a hig h-sp eed wash-
ing d evic e. Clean the vehic le (inc lud ing the aluminum wheels) w ith water as soon
as p ossib le when it has b een sp lashed with sea wate r, exp osed to sea
b reezes, or d riven on road s treated with salt or ot her ag ents.
Cleaning fog light lens (for OUTBACK)

1. Stop the vehic le in a safe p lac e.
2. Stop the eng ine and turn off the fog lig hts.
3. Chec k that the fog lig hts are not hot. Then, g ras p the p rotec tor and
turn it ap p roximately 10  c ounter-c loc kwise.
4. Pull the p rotec tor off the fog lig ht.
5. Wash the lens with water.
6. Ap p ly the p rotec tor to the lens at an ang le of ap p roximately 10 from

WARNING
Before beginning work on or near any battery, be sure to extin-
guish all cigarettes, matches, and lighters. Never expose a bat- tery to an open flame or electric sparks. Batteries give off a gaswhich is highly flammable and explosive. For safety, in case an explosion does occur, wear eye protec-
tion or shield your eyes when working near any battery. Never
lean over a battery. Do not let battery fluid contact eyes, skin, fabrics, or paint be-
cause battery fluid is a corrosive acid. If battery fluid gets on yourskin or in your eyes, immediately flush the area with water thor-
oughly. Seek medical help immediately if acid has entered theeyes.If battery fluid is accidentally swallowed, immediately drink a
large amount of milk or water, and seek medical attention
immediately. To lessen the risk of sparks, remove rings, metal watchbands,

CAUTION
Halogen headlight bulbs become very hot while in use. If you touch the bulb surface with bare hands or greasy gloves, fingerprints or grease on the bulb surface develop into hot spots, caus-ing the bulb to break. If there are finger prints or grease on thebulb surface, wipe them away with a soft cloth moistened with al-cohol.
NOTE If headlight aiming is required, consult your SUBARU dealer for proper adjustment of the headlight aim. For GT and OUTBACK models

wise until it loc ks.
6. Remove the elec tric al c onnec tor.
Front fog light (if equipped)

rep lac e the b ulb s if nec essary. Front turn signal light, parking light and side marker light
The head lig ht assemb ly must b e removed b efore the f ront turn sig nal
lig ht and p arking lig ht b ulb s c an b e rep lac ed . Whe n the head lig ht as-
semb ly has b een removed and then reinstalled , it ma y b ec ome nec es-
sary to make a head lig ht aiming ad justment. After a b ulb has b een re-
p lac ed , it is rec ommend ed that the head lig ht aiming ad justment b e

2. Op en the rear c omb ination lig ht c over. For covers on the trunk lid:
Unlatc h the c over b y p ushing the knob and op en the c over.
For covers on the trunk wall:
Unlatc h the c over b y moving the knob up ward and op e n the c over.
3. Remove the b ulb soc ket from the lig ht assemb ly b y turning it c oun-
terc loc kwise.
4. Remove the b ulb from the soc ket.Rear turn signal light: Remove the b ulb from the soc ket b y p ushing
it and turning it c ounterc loc kwise.Others: Pull the b ulb out of the soc ket.
