3645-1. Using the air conditioning system and defogger
●The following S-FLOW modes are available:
Automatic S-FLOW mode
When this mode is selected, if the rear seats are determined to
be unoccupied, the air conditioning system will operate in S-
FLOW mode.
When a rear passenger is dete cted, S-FLOW mode will be auto-
matically disabled.
The indicator on the air conditioning control screen will illu mi-
nate when the air conditioning system is operating in S-FLOW mo de.
To enter manual S-FLOW mode, select on the air conditioning
control screen.
Manual S-FLOW mode
When is selected, S-FLOW mode will be manually
enabled/disabled.
The indicator on the air conditioning control screen will illu mi-
nate when the air conditioning system is operating in S-FLOW mo de.
●Operation of the air condition ing system when S-FLOW mode is
enabled:
When the air conditioning system is operating in S-FLOW mode,
the airflow will be concentrat ed on the front seats, reducing t he
airflow and air conditioning effect on the rear seats.
Additionally, if the front pass enger seat is determined to be u noc-
cupied, the airflow will be con centrated on the driver’s seat o nly.
(Depending on the set temperature or ambient temperature, the
air conditioning system may not operate in S-FLOW mode as
described above.)
When certain conditions are met and priority is given to the
driver’s seat only, the temperature indicator for the front pas sen-
ger side will turn off.

■Using automatic mode
Fan speed is adjusted automatically according to the temperatur e setting and
the ambient conditions.
Therefore, the fan may stop for a while until warm or cool air is ready to flow
immediately after is pressed or is selected.
■ How the system judges if a seat is occupied in S-FLOW mode
The system judges if a passenger is in the vehicle as follows:
• Front passenger seat: The front passenger seat is judged to be occupied when the syst em detects
an object on the front passenger seat, fastening of the front p assenger seat
belt, changing of the set temperature for the front passenger s eat, or the
opening and closing of the front passenger door. (However, when only
opening and closing of the front passenger door is detected, th e system will
judge that the passenger seat is unoccupied after the vehicle s peed
reaches approximately 12 mph (20 km/h) or more.)
• Rear seats (automatic S-FLOW mode only): The rear seats are judged to be occupied when the system detect s the
opening and closing of a rear door.
If a seat is judged to be occupied, the system will retain that judgement for 60
minutes after the power switch is turned off.
■ Changing from automatic S-FLOW mode to manual S-FLOW mode
When the system is operating in automatic S-FLOW mode, if a rea r door is
opened and then closed, S-FLOW mode will be disabled. To enable S-FLOW
mode, select on the air conditioning control screen. (In this case, the
system will operate in manual S-FLOW mode.)
■ Changing from manual S-FLOW mode to automatic S-FLOW mode
Select on the air conditioning control screen to disable S-FLO W
mode (check that indicator is not illuminated).
Turn the power switch off.
Wait for 60 minutes or more and change the power switch to ON m ode.
■ Fogging up of the windows
●The windows will easily fog up when the humidity in the vehicle is high.
Turning or on will dehumidify the air from the outlets and
defog the windshield effectively.
● If you turn or off, the windows may fog up more easily.
● The windows may fog up if the recirculated air mode is used.

■When driving on dusty roads
Close all windows. If dust thrown up by the vehicle is still drawn into the vehi-
cle after closing the windows, it is recommended that the air i ntake mode be
set to outside air mode and the fan speed to any setting except off.
■ Outside/recirculated air mode
●Setting to the recirculated air mode temporarily is recommended in prevent-
ing dirty air from entering the vehicle interior and helping to cool the vehicle
when the outside air temperature is high.
● Outside/recirculated air mode may automatically switch dependin g on the
temperature setting or the inside temperature.
■ When the outside temperature exceeds 75°F (24°C) and the air co ndition-
ing system is on
● In order to reduce the air conditioning power consumption, the air condition-
ing system may switch to recirculated air mode automatically. This may also
reduce fuel consumption.
● Recirculated air mode is selected as a default mode when the power switch
is turned to ON mode.
● It is possible to switch to outside air mode at any time by pre ssing .
■ When the outside t emperature is low
The dehumidification function may not operate even when is pre ssed
or is selected.
■ Operation of the air conditioning system in Eco drive mode
●In the Eco drive mode, “ECO” is displayed on the air conditioni ng screen
and the air conditioning system is controlled as follows to pri oritize fuel effi-
ciency:
• Engine speed and compressor operation controlled to restrict h eating/
cooling capacity
• Fan speed restricted when automatic mode is selected
● To improve air conditioning performance, perform the following operations:
• Adjust the fan speed
• Turn off Eco drive mode

■Ventilation and air conditioning odors
●To let fresh air in, set the air conditioning system to the out side air mode.
● During use, various odors from inside and outside the vehicle m ay enter into
and accumulate in the air conditioning system. This may then ca use odor to
be emitted from the vents.
● To reduce potential odors from occurring:
• It is recommended that the air conditioning system be set to o utside air
mode prior to turning the vehicle off.
• The start timing of the blower may be delayed for a short peri od of time
immediately after the air conditioning system is started in aut omatic
mode.

WARNING
■To prevent the windshield from fogging up
● Do not use during cool air operation in extremely humid weathe r.
The difference between the temperature of the outside air and that of the
windshield can cause the outer surface of the windshield to fog up, block-
ing your vision.
■ To prevent burns
Do not touch the rear view mirror surfaces when the outside rea r view mirror
defoggers are on.
NOTICE
■ To prevent 12-volt battery discharge
Do not leave the air conditioning system on longer than necessa ry when the
hybrid system is stopped.
■ When repairing/replacing parts of the air conditioning system
Have repair/replacement performed by your Toyota dealer.
When a part of the air conditioning system, such as the evapora tor, is to be
replaced, it must be replaced with a new one.
● Do not place anything on the instrument
panel which may cover the air outlets.
Otherwise, air flow may be obstructed,
preventing the windshield defoggers
from defogging.
