FRONT SEAT BELT
PRECAUTION
CAUTION:
Replace the faulty parts of the seat belt systems (outer belt, inner belt, bolts, nuts, adjustable shoul-
der anchor, tether anchor hardware, sill±bar, etc.)
Seat belt systems not in use at the time of a collision should also be inspected and replaced if found
to be damaged or working improperly.
1. RUNNING TEST (IN SAFE AREA)
(a) Fasten the front seat belts.
(b) Drive the car at 16 km/h (10 mph) and slam on the brakes.
Check the belt locks and cannot be extended at this time.
HINT:
Conduct this test in a safe area. If the belt does not lock, remove
the belt assembly and perform the following static check. Also
whenever installing a new belt assembly, verify the proper op-
eration before installation.

REPLACEMENT
HINT:
The installation is in the reverse order of the removal. However, when there is a special point concern-
ing the installation, it is indicated.
Use the same procedures on the LH side as on the RH side.
1. DISCONNECT BATTERY NEGATIVE TERMINAL
2. REMOVE FRONT SEAT ASSEMBLY RH
3. REMOVE FRONT SEAT INNER BELT ASSY RH

NOTICE:
Removal operation concerning the seat belt with the
pretensioner must be started when 90 seconds or
more time has passed after the ignition switch is
turned OFF and the battery negative terminal is dis-
connected.
Carefully read the notices for the ºpretensionerº in
the SRS airbag system section and the front seat out-
er belt assy section.
(a) Remove the nut and the outer belt on the shoulder anchor
side.
(b) Disconnect the pretensioner connector, as shown in the illustration.
(c) Remove the 2 bolts on the retractor side and throughly re- move the outer belt.
11. REMOVE FRONT SHOULDER BELT ANCHOR ADJUSTER ASSY
(a) Remove the bolt and anchor adjuster.
12. INSTALL FRONT SHOULDER BELT ANCHOR ADJUSTER ASSY
(a) Install the adjuster with the bolt. Torque: 42 N m (430 kgf cm, 31 ft lbf)

13. INSTALL FRONT SEAT OUTER BELT ASSY RH
NOTICE:
Do not disassemble the retractor.
(a) Check the degree of tilt when beginning to lock the ELR.
(1) Check that the belt does not lock within 15 of tilt in
all directions but locks with over 45 of tilt when
gently moving the retractor.
If operation is not as specified, replace the outer belt assy.
(b) Install the outer belt with the 2 bolts on the retractor side.
Torque:
7.5 Nm (76.5 kgfcm, 66 in.lbf) for upper bolt
42 Nm (430 kgfcm, 31 ftlbf) for lower bolt
(c) Connect the pretensioner connector, as shown in the il-
lustration.
(d) Install the outer belt with the nut on the shoulder anchor
side.
Torque: 42 Nm (430 kgfcm, 31 ftlbf)
(e) Install the outer belt with the bolt on the floor anchor side.
Torque: 42 Nm (430 kgfcm, 31 ftlbf)
(f) Install the floor anchor cover.
(g) Check the ELR lock.
NOTICE:
The check should be performed with the assembly
installed.
(1) Check that the belt locks by pulling it out quickly af-
ter installation.
If operation is not as specified, replace the outer belt assy.
(h) Check the fastening function of the child restraint system.
NOTICE:
The check should be performed with the assembly
installed.
(1) Check that the belt cannot be pulled out any more
but rewinds after being pulled out fully.
(2) Check that the belt can be pulled out and rewound
after the belt has been fully rewound.
If operation is not as specified, replace the outer belt assy.
14. INSTALL FRONT SEAT INNER BELT ASSY RH
(a) Install the inner belt with the nut.
Torque: 42 Nm (430 kgfcm, 31 ftlbf)

DISPOSAL
HINT:
When scrapping vehicles equipped with a seat belt pretensioner or disposing of a front seat outer belt (with
seat belt pretensioner), always first activate the seat belt pretensioner in accordance with the procedures
described below. If any abnormality occurs in activation of the seat belt pretensioner, contact the SERVICE
DEPT. of the DISTRIBUTOR. When disposing of a front seat outer belt assy (with seat belt pretensioner)
that was activated in a collision, follow the same procedure listed in step 1±(e) in ºDISPOSALº.
CAUTION:
Never dispose of a front seat outer belt assy with an
inactivated pretensioner.
The seat belt pretensioner produces a sizeable ex-
ploding sound when it activates, so perform the op-
eration outdoors so as not to disturb nearby resi-
dents.
When activating a front seat outer belt (with seat belt
pretensioner), control operation at least 10 m (33 ft)
away from the front seat outer belt.
Use gloves and safety glasses when handling a front
seat belt with an activated pretensioner.
Always wash your hands with water after completing
activation.
Do not apply water, etc. to a front seat outer belt with
an activated pretensioner.
When activating the seat belt pretensioner, always
use the specified SST (SRS airbag deployment tool).
Perform operation in a place away from electrical in-
terference.

HINT:
Check that the battery positive voltage is above 12 V.

(a) Check the functioning of SST. SST 09082±00700, 09082±00770
CAUTION:
When activating the seat belt pretensioner, always use the
specified SST.
(1) Connect the SST red clip to the battery positive (+)terminal and the black clip to the battery negative
(±) terminal.
HINT:
Do not connect the yellow connector which should be con-
nected to the seat belt pretensioner.
(2) Press the SST activation switch and check that theLED of the SST activation switch lights up.
CAUTION:
If the LED lights up when the activation switch is not
pressed, the SST may have a malfunction, in which case
that SST should be used.
(b) Disconnect the SST from the battery.
(c) Disconnect the pretensioner connector. (1) Disconnect the battery negative (±) terminal.
(2)Check the SRS airbag system (See page 60±1).
(3)Remove the front door scuff plate RH (See page 76±36, 76±45, 76±54).
(4)Remove the rear door scuff plate RH (See page 76±36, 76±45, 76±54).
(5) Remove the front door weatherstrip RH.
(6) Remove the rear door weatherstrip RH.
(7)Remove the center pillar garnish lower RH (See page 76±36, 76±45, 76±54).
(8) Disconnect the pretensioner connector, as shownin the illustration.
(d) Connect SST.

(1) Install the floor anchor of the seat belt.

(2) Connect SST, then connect them to the seat belt
pretensioner.
NOTICE:
To avoid damaging the SST connector and wire harness,
do not lock the secondary lock of the twin lock.
(3) Move the SST at least 10 m (33 ft) away from thefront of the vehicle.
(4) Close all the doors and windows of the vehicle.
NOTICE:
Take care not to damage the SST wire harness. (5) Connect the SST red clip to the battery positive (+)
terminal and the black clip to the negative (±) termi-
nal.
(e) Activate the seat belt pretensioner. (1) Confirm that no one is inside the vehicle or within 10 m (33 ft) of th\
e vehicle.
(2) Press the SST activation switch and activate the seat belt pretensioner.
HINT:
The seat belt pretensioner operates simultaneously with the LED light fo\
r the SST activation switch.
(f) Dispose of the outer belt (with the seat belt pretensioner).
CAUTION:
The outer belt is very hot when the seat belt pretensioner is activated,\
so leave it untouched
for at least 30 minutes after it has been activated.
Use gloves and safety glasses when handling the outer belt with a pretensio\
ner that has been
activated.
Always wash your hands with water after completing operation.
Do not apply water, etc. to an outer belt with a pretensioner that has been activated.
HINT:
When scrapping a vehicle, activate the seat belt pretensioner, and then scrap the vehicle with the activated
outer belt being installed.
2. DISPOSE OF FRONT SEAT OUTER BELT ASSY RH (WHEN NOT INSTALLED IN VEHICLE)
NOTICE:
When disposing of the front seat outer belt (with the seat belt pretens\
ioner) only, never use the
customer 's vehicle to activate the seat belt pretensioner.
Be sure to follow the procedures listed below when activating the seat b\
elt pretensioner.
(a)Remove the outer belt (See page 61±7).
HINT:
Cut the belt near the seat belt retractor.

NOTICE:

a wheel and tire.
NOTICE:
Set up the front seat outer belt assy as shown in the illustra-
tion.
(3) Move the SST at least 10 m (33 ft) away from the
wheel.
NOTICE:
Take care not to damage the SST wire harness.
(d) Activate the seat belt pretensioner.
(1) Connect the SST red clip to the battery positive (+)
terminal and the black clip to the battery negative
(±) terminal.
(2) Check that no one is within 10 m (33 ft) of the wheel.
(3) Press the SST activation switch and activate the
seat belt pretensioner.
HINT:
The seat belt pretensioner operates simultaneously with the
LED light for the SST activation switch.
(e) Dispose of the outer belt (with the seat belt pretensioner).
CAUTION:
The outer belt assy is very hot when the seat belt pre-
tensioner is activated, so leave it untouched for at
least 30 minutes after it has been activated.
Use gloves and safety glasses when handling the out-
er belt with the pretensioner that has been activated.
Always wash your hands with water after completing
operation.

Do not apply water, etc. to an outer belt with the pre-
tensioner that has been activated.
(1) Remove the wheel and SST.
(2) Place the outer belt in a plastic bag, tie the end tight-
ly and dispose of it in the same way as other general
parts.
