AVENSIS Supplement (RM 1045E)
S If communication is still impossible when the tool is con-
nected to another vehicle, the problem is probably in the
tool itself, so consult the Service Department listed in the
tool’s instruction manual.
4. INSPECT BATTERY VOLTAGE Battery voltage: 11 to14V
If voltage is below 11 V, recharge the battery before proceeding.
5. CHECK CHK ENG
(a) The CHK ENG c om es on when t he ignit ion swit ch is turned to ON and the engine is not running.
HINT:
If the CHK ENG is not illuminated, troubleshoot the CHK ENG
circuit (see page 05 −25 1).
(b) When the engine is started, the CHK ENG should not illu- minate. If the lamp remains on, the diagnosis system has
detected a malfunction or abnormality in the system.

TERMINALS OF ECM
Each ECM terminal’s standard normal voltage is shown in the table below.
In the table, first follow the information under ”Condition”. Look under ”Symbols (Terminals No.)” for the termi-
nals to be inspected. The standard normal voltage between the terminals is shown under ”STD Voltage”.
Use the illustration above as a reference for the ECM terminals.

BASIC INSPECTION
When the malfunction is not confirmed in the DTC check, troubleshooting should be carried out in all the
possible circuits considered as causes of the problem. In many cases, by carrying out the basic engine check
shown in the following flowchart, the location causing the problem can be found quickly and efficiently. There-
fore, using this check is essential in the engine troubleshooting.
1 CHECK BATTERY VOLTAGE

Carry out this check with the engine stopped and ignition switch OFF.

CHECK FOR INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS
HINT:
Hand −held tester only:
Inspect the vehicle’s ECM using check mode. Intermittent problems are easier to detect when the ECM is
in check mode with a hand −held tester. In check mode, the ECM uses 1 trip detection logic, which has a
higher sensitivity to malfunctions than normal mode (default) using uses 2 trip detection logic.
(a) Clear the DTCs (see page 05 −1 9) .
(b) Set the check mode (see page 05 −20).
(c) Perform a simulation test (see page 0 1− 22).
(d) Check the connector and terminal (see page 0 1− 32).
(e) Wiggle the harness and the connector (see page 0 1− 32).
