INTERIOR
 KEY REMINDER SYSTEM
All vehicles have a key reminder system as standard equipment. When the ignition key is left inserted in the ignition
key cylinder at ACC or LOCK positioon and the driver's door is opened, this system sounds a warning tone to remind
the driver to remove the ignition key.
 SRS AIRBAG
For all models, the new Camry has as standard equipment a driver's airbag in the steering wheel pad and a front
passenger airbag located in the instrument panel above the glove box.
 CRUISE CONTROL SYSTEM
The cruise control system is standard equipment on the LE and XLE grade model and an option on the CE grade
models. The main switch and control switch are on the a single lever, which is installed on the steering wheel and
can be operated easily.
 ILLUMINATED ENTRY SYSTEM
An illuminated entry system is standard equipment on the LE and XLE models. This system makes it easy to let
the Camry in and out at night, etc.
On the LE grade model, the ignition key cylinder illumination is turned on automatically when the door is opened.
When the door is closed, the ignition key cylinder illumination remains on for approximately 5 seconds, then goes
off automatically.
On the XLE grade model, the illuminated entry system turns on the dome light and ignition key cylinder
illumination for approximately 15 seconds after either door is closed when passengers are entering or leaving the
vehicle. While these lights are on for 15 seconds, if the ignition switch is turned to the ACC or ON position, or if
all doors are locked, the dome light and ignition key cylinder illuminatioons go off immediately.

 SRS AIRBAG
1. General
The SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) airbag is designed to help lessening the shock to the driver and front
passenger as a supplement to the seat belt. In a collision, the aribag sensor detects the shock and if the front±to±rear
shock is greater than a specified value, the airbags stored in the steering wheel pad for the driver and above the glove
box for the front passenger inflate instantly to help reducing the likelihood of the driver's or front passenger's head
and chest directly hitting the steering wheel or instrument panel.
As in the '96 Avalon, a 1±sensor type airbag system is used, in chich the detection of deceleration during a collision
is accomplished by the airbag sensor enclosed in the airbag snesor assembly.
The airbag system is controlled by the airbag sensor assembly. It has a self±diagnosis function. When it detects a
system malfunction, it lights up the SRS warning light on the combination meter to alert the driver.
The basic construction and operation are the same as in teh '96 Avalon. However, 2 types of the inflator for front
passenger have been adopted in the new Camry: TRW made and Morton made. Also, the construction of airbag sensor
assembly has been changed.
System Diagram
The activation processes of the SRS airbag is as illustrated below.

4. Construction and Operation
Side Airbag Sensor Assembly
1) Description
The side airbag sensor assembly is mounted on the right and left center pillars. It receives signals from
the side airbag sensor enclosed in the side airbag sensor assembly and judges whether the side airbag must
be activated or not.
2) Construction and Operation
The side airbag sensor assembly consists of side airbag sensor, safing sensor, etc.
a. Side Airbag Sensor
The side airbag sensor is enclosed in the side airbag sensor assembly based on the acceleration of the
vehicle that occurs during a side collision. The distortion created in the sensor is converted into an elec-
tric signal. This signal is a linear representation of the acceleration rate.
b. Safing Sensor
The safing sensor is enclosed in the side airbag sensor assembly. The sensor turns ON if an acceleration
force that is higher than a predetermined value is applied to the safing sensor as a result of a side colli-
sion.
Airbag Sensor Assembly
1) Description
The airbag sensor assembly is mounted on the center floor under the instrument panel.
When the airbag sensor assembly receives the airbag activation signal from the side airbag sensor assem-
bly, it applies current to the inflator.
Furthermore, the airbag sensor assembly diagnoses a system malfunction of the side airbag system.
This is the same airbag sensor assembly that is used for the
SRS airbag for the driver and front passenger.
2) Construction and Operation
The airbag sensor assembly consists of ignition control circuit, back up power source, diagnosis circuit,
memory circuit, etc.
a. Ignition Control Circuit
The ignition control circuit performs a prescribed calculation based on the signal output by the airbag
sensor and the front airbag sensor. If these calculated values are larger than a predetermined value, it
activates the ignition operation.
b. Back-Up Power Source
The back-up power source consists of a back-up capacitor and a DC-DC converter. In case of a power
system failure during a collision, the back-up capacitor discharges and supplies electric power to the
system. The DC-DC converter is a boosting transformer when the battery voltage drops below a certain
level.
c. Diagnosis Circuit
This circuit constantly diagnoses the system for any malfunction. When a malfunction is detected, it
lights up the
SRS warning light on the combination meter to alert the driver.
d. Memory Circuit
When a malfunction is detected by the diagnosis circuit, it is coded and stored in this memory circuit.

(g) ºABSº Warning Light
This light warns that there is a problem
somewhere in your anti±lock brake sys-
tem.
If the light comes on while you are driv-
ing, have your vehicle checked by your
Toyota dealer as soon as possible.
The light will come on when the ignition
key is turned to the ºONº position. After
a few seconds, the light will go off.
When the ºABSº warning light is on (and
the brake system warning light is off), the
brake system operates conventionally but
anti±lock brake system is not assisting
brake performance so that the wheels can
lock±up during sudden braking or braking
on slippery road surfaces.
(h) Open Door Warning Light
This light remains on until all the doors
and back door are completely closed.
(i) Rear Light Failure Warning Light
If this light comes on when the headlight
switch is turned on (at the first or second
clickstop), it indicates that one or more of
the tail lights are burned out.If it comes on when the brake pedal is
depressed, one or more stop lights are
burned out.
Have defective bulbs replaced as soon as
possible.
(j) SRS Airbag Warning Light
This light will come on when the igni-
tion key is turned to the ºACCº or
ºONº position. After about 6 seconds,
the light will go off. This means the
systems of the airbag and front seat
belt pretensioner are operating properly.
The warning light system monitors the
front airbag sensors, airbag sensor as-
sembly, seat belt pretensioner assemblies,
inflators, warning light, interconnecting wir-
ing and power sources.
If either of the following conditions occurs,
this indicates a malfunction somewhere in
the parts monitored by the warning light
system. Contact your Toyota dealer as
soon as possible to service the vehicle.
The light does not come on when the
ignition key is turned to the ºACCº or
ºONº position or remains on.
The light comes on or flashes while
driving.(k) Low Windshield Washer Fluid Level
Warning Light
The light warns that the windshield washer
fluid level is too low. Add washer fluid at
your earliest opportunity. (For instructions,
see ºAdding washer fluidº in Chapter 7±3.)
(l) ºTRAC OFFº Indicator/Warning Light
This light comes on when the ignition key
is turned to ºONº, and will go off after 3
seconds. This means that the system is
operating properly.
If one of the following conditions occurs,
this indicates a malfunction somewhere in
the parts monitored by the warning light
system. Contact your Toyota dealer as
soon as possible to service the vehicle.
The light remains on more than 3 se-
conds after the ignition switch is turned
on.

Traction control system
Slip indicator light
ºTRAC OFFº indicator/warning light
AUTOMATIC TRACTION CONTROL SYS-
TEM
The traction control system automatical-
ly helps control the spinning of the
front wheels which may occur when ac-
celerating on slippery road surfaces,
thus assisting driver to control the driv-
ing power of the front wheels. When
you turn the ignition switch on, the
traction control system always turns on
automatically, and the slip indicator
light and ºTRAC OFFº indicator/warning
light will come on. The indicator lights
will go off after about 3 seconds.
Leave the system on during ordinary
driving so that it can operate when
needed. When traction control is ap-
plied, the slip indicator light blinks.
You may hear a sound in the engine
compartment for a few seconds when the
engine is started or just after the vehicle
is started. This means that the traction
control system is in the self±check mode,
and does not indicate malfunction. When
the traction control system is operating,
you may feel vibration or noise of your
vehicle, caused by operation of the
brakes. This indicates the system is func-
tioning properly.
