When trouble arises
WARNING
QWhen exchanging the battery
O When the vent plug and indicator are close to the hold down bracket, the
battery fluid (sulfuric acid) may leak.
O For information regarding battery replacement, contact any authorized
Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable repairer.
Q To prevent damage to the vehicle (vehicles with manual transmission)
Do not pull- or push-start the vehicle as the three-way catalytic converter or
catalytic converter may overheat and become a fire hazard.
NOTICE
Q When handling jumper cables
When connecting the jumper cables, ensure that they do not become entan-
gled in the cooling fan or belt.

If your vehicle overheats
Stop the vehicle in a safe place and turn off the air conditioning sys-
tem, and then stop the engine.
If you see steam:
Carefully lift the hood after the steam subsides.
If you do not see steam:
Carefully lift the hood.
After the engine has cooled down sufficiently, inspect the hoses and
radiator core (radiator) for any leaks.

If a large amount of coolant
leaks, immediately contact any
authorized Toyota retailer or
Toyota authorized repairer, or
any reliable repairer.
The following may indicate that your vehicle is overheating.
O The needle of the engine coolant temperature gauge (P. 130)
enters the red zone or a loss of engine power is experienced.
(For example, the vehicle speed does not increase.)
O Vehicles with multi-information display: “Engine Coolant Temp
High Stop in a Safe Place See Owner’s Manual” is shown on the
multi-information display.
O Steam comes out from under the hood.

The coolant level is satisfactory if it is between the “F” and “L” lines
on the reservoir.

When trouble arises
Start the engine to check that the radiator cooling fan operates and
to check for coolant leaks from the radiator or hoses.
If the fan is not operating:
Stop the engine immediately and contact any authorized Toyota
retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable repairer.
If the fan is operating:
Have the vehicle inspected at the nearest authorized Toyota retailer
or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable repairer.
WARNING
Q When inspecting under the hood of your vehicle
Observe the following precautions.
Failure to do so may result in serious injury such as burns.
O If steam is seen coming from under the hood, do not open the hood until
the steam has subsided. The engine compartment may be very hot.
O Keep hands and clothing (especially a tie, a scarf or a muffler) away from
the fans and belts. Failure to do so may cause the hands or clothing to be
caught, resulting in serious injury.
O Do not loosen the radiator cap (if equipped), the engine coolant reservoir
cap or intercooler coolant reservoir cap (if equipped) while the engine and
radiator are hot. High temperature steam or coolant could spray out.
NOTICE
Q When adding engine coolant
Add coolant slowly after the engine has cooled down sufficiently. Adding
cool coolant to a hot engine too quickly can cause damage to the engine.
Q To prevent damage to the cooling system
Observe the following precautions:
O Avoid contaminating the coolant with foreign matter (such as sand or dust
etc.).
O Do not use any coolant additive.

If you run out of fuel and the engine stalls
(diesel engine only)
If you run out of fuel and the engine stalls:
Refuel your vehicle.
To bleed the fuel system, oper-
ate the priming pump until you
feel more resistance.
Start the engine. ( P. 220, 223)
If the engine does not start after the above steps have been performed,
wait for 10 seconds and try steps and again. If the engine still does
not start, contact any authorized Toyo ta retailer or Toyota authorized
repairer, or any reliable repairer.
After starting the engine, depress the accelerator pedal lightly until the
engine runs smoothly.

NOTICE
Q When restarting the engine
O Do not crank the engine before refueling and operating the priming pump.
This may damage the engine and fuel system.
O Do not crank the engine for more than 30 seconds at a time. This may
overheat the starter and wiring system.

When trouble arises
If the vehicle becomes stuck
Stop the engine. Set the parking brake and shift the shift lever to P
(automatic transmission) or N (manual transmission).
Remove the mud, snow or sand from around the stuck tire.
Place wood, stones or some other material under the tires to help
provide traction.
Restart the engine.
Vehicles with rear differential lock system: Lock the rear differential.

Shift the shift lever to the D or R position (automatic transmission)
or 1 or R position (manual transmission) and carefully apply the
accelerator to free the vehicle.
Carry out the following procedures if the tires spin or the vehicle
becomes stuck in mud, dirt or snow:

When trouble arises
WARNING
QWhen attempting to free a stuck vehicle
If you choose to push the vehicle back and forth to free it, make sure the
surrounding area is clear to avoid striking other vehicles, objects or people.
The vehicle may also lunge forward or lunge back suddenly as it becomes
free. Use extreme caution.
Q When shifting the shift lever
For vehicles with automatic transmission, be careful not to shift the shift
lever with the accelerator pedal depressed.
This may lead to unexpected rapid acceleration of the vehicle that may
cause an accident resulting in death or serious injury.
NOTICE
Q To avoid damage to the transmission and other components
O Avoid spinning the wheels and depressing the accelerator pedal more
than necessary.
O If the vehicle remains stuck even after these procedures are performed,
the vehicle may require towing to be freed.
O Vehicles with automatic transmission: When a warning message for the
automatic transmission fluid temperature is displayed while attempting to
free a stuck vehicle, immediately remove your foot from the accelerator
pedal and wait until the warning message disappears. Otherwise, the
transmission may become damaged. ( P. 238)
