Air flow selector settingsOperating tips
To cool off your Scion after it has been
parked in the hot sun, drive with the
windows open for a few minutes. This
vents the hot air, allowing the air
conditioning to cool the interior more
quickly.
Make sure the air intake grilles in front
of the windshield are not blocked (by
leaves or snow, for example).
Keep the area under the front seats
clear to allow air to circulate through-
out the vehicle.
On cold days, set the fan speed to
high for a minute to help clear the
intake ducts of snow or moisture. This
can reduce the amount of fogging on
the windows.
When driving on dusty roads, close all
windows. If dust thrown up by the ve-
hicle is still drawn into the vehicle after
closing the windows, it is recommended
that the air intake selector be set to
FRESH and the fan speed selector to
any setting except “0”.

134
If following another vehicle on a dusty
road, or driving in windy and dusty
conditions, it is recommended that the
air intake selector be temporarily set to
RECIRCULATE, which will close off the
outside passage and prevent outside
air and dust from entering the vehicle
interior.
CAUTION
To prevent the windshield from fog-
ging up, do not select the windshield
air outlets during cool air operation
in extremely humid weather. The dif-
ference between the temperature of
the outside air and that of the wind-
shield can cause the outer surface of
the windshield to fog up, blocking
your vision.
NOTICE
To prevent battery discharge, do not
leave the air conditioning system on
longer than necessary when the en-
gine is stopped.
Heating
For best results, set controls to:
Fan speed— Any setting except “0”
Temperature— Towards red zone
Air intake—FRESH (outside air)
Air flow—FLOOR
Air conditioning—OFF
For quick heating, select recirculated
air for a few minutes. To keep the
windows from fogging, select fresh af-
ter the vehicle interior has been
warmed.
Press the “A/C” button on for dehumidi-
fied heating.
Choose floor/windshield air flow to heat
the vehicle interior while defrosting or
defogging the windshield.

If air flow control is not satisfactory, check
the instrument panel vents. The vents may
be opened or closed as shown.
You can change air flow direction by turn-
ing the vents.
The air conditioning filter information

The air conditioning filter may clog af-
ter long use. The filter may need to be
cleaned or replaced if the air flow of
the air conditioner and heater experi-
ences extreme reductions in operating
efficiency, or if the windows begin to
fog up easily.
To maintain the air conditioning efficiency,
inspect, clean and replace the air condi-
tioning filter according to the maintenance
schedule. In dusty areas or areas with
heavy traffic flow, such as inner city or
desert areas, more frequent cleaning or
early replacement may be required. (For
scheduled maintenance information, please
refer to the “Scheduled Maintenance
Guide” or “Owner ’s Manual Supplement”.)
REMOVAL METHOD:1. Open the glove box, and slide off the damper as shown.2. Push in each side of the glove boxto disconnect the claws.

3. Remove the filter cover as shown inthe illustration.4. Pull the filter out of the filter outlet.
If it is dirty, it should be cleaned or re-
placed.CLEANING METHOD:
If the filter is dirty, clean by blowing
compressed air through the filter from
the downward side.
Hold the air gun 5 cm (2 in.) from the
filter and blow for approximately 2 minutes
at 500 kPa (5.0 kgf/cm
2 or bar, 72 psi).
If it is not available, have the filter
cleaned by your Scion dealer.
NOTICE
When cleaning the filter, do not clean
the filter with water.

REPLACEMENT METHOD:
When inserting the filter in the filter
outlet, keep the “↑ UP” mark pointing
up.
NOTICE
To prevent damage to the air condi-
tioning system, do the following.
When using the air conditioning
system, make sure that a filter is
always installed.
When cleaning the filter, do not
clean the filter with water.
