Modification and Add-On Equipment
Toyota cannot guarantee the immobilizer and the theft deterrent
systems’ operation if the system has been modified or if any
add-on equipment has been installed.
NOTICE
To avoid damage to the vehicle, do not modify the system or install any add-
on equipment to the immobilizer and the theft deterrent systems or the vehi-
cle.

2-8. Security System
Immobilizer System
If someone attempts to start the engine with an unrecognized ke y, the
engine will not start, thereby helping to pre vent vehicle theft.
If you have a problem with the i mmobilizer system or the key, consult
your Toyota dealer.
● The keys carry a unique electronic code. For this reason, and t o assure your
safety, obtaining a replacement key requires some waiting time. They are
only available through your Toyota dealer.
● Always keep a spare key in case one is lost. If a key is lost, consult your
Toyota dealer as soon as possible.
● If you lose a key, your Toyota dealer will reset the electronic codes of your
remaining keys and immobilizer system. Bring all the remaining keys to your
Toyota dealer to reset.
Starting the vehicle with a key that has not been reset is not possible.
The immobilizer system allows the engine to start only with a
key the system recognizes.
NOTICE
● Radio equipment like this is governed by laws in the United Sta tes.
Changes or modifications not expressly approved by the party responsible
for compliance could void the user’s authority to operate the e quipment.
● To avoid damage to the key, do not:
• Drop the key.
• Get the key wet.
• Expose the key to any kind of magnetic field.
• Expose the key to high temperatures on places such as the dash board
or hood, under direct sunlight.
● If the engine does not start with the correct key, and the secu rity indicator
light keeps illuminating or flashing, the system may have a mal function.
Consult your Toyota dealer.

2
Before Driving
■Arming
The system is armed when the
ignition is switched from ON to
off.
The security indicator light in
the combination meter flashes
every 2 seconds until the sys-
tem is disarmed.
■Disarming
The system is disarmed when the ignition is switched ON with the
correct programmed key. The security indicator light illuminates for
about 3 seconds and then turns off. If the engine does not star t with
the correct key, and the security indicator light remains illuminated
or flashing, try the following:
Make sure the key is within the operational range for signal tr ans-
mission. Switch the ignition of f, and then restart the engine. If the
engine does not start after 3 or more tries, contact your Toyota
dealer.
● The engine may not start and security indicator light may illum inate or flash
if the key is placed in an area where it is difficult for the system to detect the
signal, such as on the dashboard or in the glove compartment. M ove the
key to a location within the signal range, switch the ignition off, and then
restart the engine.
● Signals from a TV or radio station, or from a transceiver or mo bile telephone
could interfere with your immobilizer system. If you are using the proper key
and the engine fails to start, check the security indicator light.
● If the security indicator light flashes continuously while you are driving, do
not shut off the engine. Go to your Toyota dealer and have it checked. If the
engine is shut off while the indicator light is flashing, you w ill not be able to
restart it.
● Because the electronic codes are reset when the immobilizer sys tem is
repaired, the keys are needed. Make sure to bring all the keys to your Toy-
ota dealer so that they can be programmed.

1593-1. Start/Stop Engine
3
When Driving
After starting the engine, let it idle for about ten seconds.
●The key must be carried because the key carries an immobilizer chip that
must communicate with the engine controls at short range.
● The engine can be started when the push button start is pressed from off,
ACC, or ON.
● The push button start system functions (function which can star t the engine
by only carrying the key) can be deactivated to prevent any pos sible
adverse effect on a user wearing a pacemaker or other medical d evice. If
the system is deactivated, you will be unable to start the engi ne by carrying
the key. Consult your Toyota dealer for details. If the push bu tton start sys-
tem functions have been deactivated, you can start the engine b y following
the procedure indicated when the key battery goes dead.
Refer to Engine Start Function When Key Battery is Dead on P. 161.
● After starting a cold engine, the engine speed increases and a whining
sound from the engine compartment can be heard.
This is for improved exhaust gas purification and does not indicate defect of
the parts.
● Engine-starting is controlled by the spark ignition system.
This system meets all Canadian Interference-Causing Equipment Standard
requirements regulating the impul se electrical field strength of radio noise.
● Under the following conditions, the KEY warning light (red) fla shes after the
push button start is pressed to inform the driver that the push button start
will not switch to ACC even if it is pressed from off.
• The key battery is dead.
• The key is out of operational range.
• The key is placed in areas where it is difficult for the syste m to detect the
signal ( P. 98).
• A key from another manufacturer similar to the key is in the o perational
range.

3-1. Start/Stop Engine
Press the push button start to switch the ignition position. The ignition
switches in the order of ACC, ON, and off each time the push button start
is pressed. To switch the ignition position again, perform the operation
from the beginning.
If the KEY warning lig ht (red) illuminates, or the push button start indi-
cator light (amber) flashes, thi s could indicate that the engin e may not
start using the usual starting method. Have your vehicle inspec ted at
your Toyota dealer as soon as possible. If this occurs, the eng ine can
be force-started. Press and hold the push button start until th e engine
starts. Other procedures necessary for starting the engine such as
having the key in the cabin, and depressing the clutch pedal (m anual
transaxle) or the brake pedal (automatic transaxle) are require d.
NOTICE
When starting the engine by holding the smart key over the push button
start due to a dead key battery or a malfunctioning key, be careful not to
allow the following, otherwise the signal from the key will not be received
correctly and the engine may not start.
● Devices for electronic purchases, or security passage touch or come near
the key.
Emergency Operation for Starting the Engine

● Metal parts of other keys or metal
objects touch the key.
● Spare keys or keys for other vehicles
equipped with an immobilizer system
touch or come near the key.
