Shiftlock override
If the vehicle cannot be driven, for example because of a dead battery, the gear selectormust be moved from the P position before
the vehicle can be moved 3
.
Lift away the rubber mat on the floor of the storage compartment behind the cen-ter console to expose the small openingfor overriding the shiftlock system.
Insert the key blade into the opening. Press the key blade down as far as possi-ble and keep it held down.
Move the gear selector from the P posi-

All Wheel Drive: AWD 4
Your Volvo can be equipped with permanent All Wheel Drive, which means that power isdistributed automatically between the frontand rear wheels. Under normal driving condi-tions, most of the engine's power is directedto the front wheels. However, if there is anytendency for the front wheels to spin, an elec-tronically controlled coupling distributespower to the wheels that have the best trac-tion.
NOTE
The message AWD disabled Service
required will be appear in the information
display if an electrical fault should occur in the AWD system. A warning light will alsoilluminate in the instrument panel. If thisoccurs, have the system checked by atrained and qualified Volvo service techni-cian.
3 If the battery is dead, the electric parking brake cannot be applied or released. Connect an auxiliary battery if the battery voltage is too low, see page 121.4
Standard on certain models.

06 Infotainment
Introduction

226* Option/accessory, for more information, see Introduction.
General information
The infotainment system consists of radio and media player features and also makes itpossible to communicate via a cell phone. The information is displayed on a 7" screen inthe center console. Infotainment functionscan be controlled from the center console orvia the buttons on the steering wheel keypad. On models equipped with the navigation sys-tem*, voice commands can also be used toe.g., set destinations, make calls from a Bluetooth ®
-connected cell phone, etc.
If the infotainment system was on when the ignition was switched off, the most recently used source (
FM1, etc.) will restart the next
time the ignition is put in mode I or higher.
The driver's door must also be closed on vehicles with keyless drive*. The infotainment system can be operated for 15 minutes at a time while the engine isswitched off by pressing the On/Off button. While the engine is being started, the infotain- ment system will be temporarily interruptedand will resume when the engine has started.
NOTE
To help avoid excessive battery drain, remove the remote key from the ignitionslot if the infotainment system is usedwhile the engine is switched off.

Towing the vehicle
1. With the remote key fully pressed into theignition slot 1
, press START/STOP
ENGINE for approximately 2 seconds to
activate ignition mode II.
2. The remote key must remain in the igni- tion slot 2
for the entire time that the vehi-
cle is being towed.
3. Keep the tow rope taut when the towing vehicle slows down by applying light pressure on the brake pedal. This willhelp prevent jarring movements of thevehicle being towed.
4. Be prepared to apply the brakes to stop the vehicle being towed.CAUTION
General towing precautions:
• Please check with state and local authorities before attempting this typeof towing, as vehicles being towed aresubject to regulations regarding maxi-mum towing speed, length and type oftowing device, lighting, etc.
• If the vehicle's battery is dead, attachjumper cables (see page 121) to pro-vide current for releasing the electricparking brake and to move the gearselector from the
P position to N. If
this is not possible, see page 126 forinformation about manually overridingthe shiftlock system to move the gearselector from P to N.
• Maximum speed: 50 mph (80 km/h).Do not exceed the maximum allowabletowing speed.
• Maximum distance with front wheelson ground: 50 miles (80 km).
• The vehicle should only be towed inthe forward direction.
Having the vehicle towed by a tow truck
Call for professional help from an authorized towing company.Volvo recommends the useof flat bed equipment. The towing eyelet may be used to pull the vehicle onto a flatbed tow truck if:
• The angle of the tow truck’s ramp is not more than 12 degrees from a horizontalplane
• The vehicle’s wheels rotate freely and rollstraight ahead
WARNING
No person or object should be behind the tow truck while the vehicle is being pulledup onto the flatbed.
1
Not necessary in vehicles with the optional keyless drive.
2 For vehicles with the the optional keyless dirive, the remote key must be in the vehicle.

WARNING
The cooling fan (located at the front of the engine compartment, behind the radiator)may start or continue to operate (for up to6 minutes) after the engine has beenswitched off.
WARNING
Before performing any operations in the engine compartment, the ignition shouldalways be completely switched off (inmode
0, see page 87) and there should be
no remote keys in the passenger compart-ment. The gear selector should be in the P
(park) position. If the engine has been run-ning, wait until it has cooled before touch-ing any components in the engine com-partment. The distributor ignition system operates at very high voltages. Special safety precau-tions must be followed to prevent injury.Always turn the ignition off when:
• Replacing distributor ignition compo- nents e.g. plugs, coil, etc.
• Do not touch any part of the distributorignition system while the engine is run-ning. This may result in unintendedmovements and body injury.

WARNING
•Never expose the battery to open flame or electric spark.
• Do not smoke near the battery.
• Battery fluid contains sulfuric acid. Donot allow battery fluid to contact eyes, skin, fabrics or painted surfaces. Ifcontact occurs, flush the affected areaimmediately with water. Obtain medi-cal help immediately if eyes are affec-ted.
NOTE
The life of the battery is shortened if it becomes discharged repeatedly.
Maintenance

Use a screw driver to open the caps or cover and a flashlight to inspect the level.
• If necessary, add distilled water. The levelshould never be above the indicator.
• The fluid level should be checked if thebattery has been recharged.
• After inspection, be sure the cap overeach battery cell or the cover is securelyin place.
• Check that the battery cables are cor-rectly connected and properly tightened. •
Never disconnect the battery when theengine is running, or when the key is inthe ignition. This could damage the vehi-cle's electrical system.
• The battery should be disconnected fromthe vehicle when a battery charger isused directly on the battery.
• To help keep the battery in good condi-tion, the vehicle should be driven for atleast 15 minutes a week or connected toa charger with an automatic chargingfunction.
• If the battery is fully discharged a numberof times, this may shorten its service life.Keeping the battery fully charged helpsprolong its service life.
• The service life of a battery is affected byfactors such as driving conditions and cli-mate. Extreme cold may also furtherdecrease the battery’s starting capacity.
• Because the battery’s starting capacitydecreases with time, it may be necessaryto recharge it if the vehicle is not drivenfor an extended period of time or if thevehicle is usually only driven short dis-tances.
CAUTION
•Always use distilled or deionized water (battery water).
• Never fill above the level mark in thecell.
