ShiftlockWhen your vehicle is parked, the gear selector is locked in the P (Park) position. To release the selector from this position, the ignition must be inmode
II (p. 74) or the engine must be running.
Depress the brake pedal, press the button on the front side of the gear selector and move the selector from P (Park).
Anti-lock Brake System (ABS)The ABS system performs a brief self-diagnostic test when the engine has been started and driverreleases the brake pedal. Another automatic testmay be performed when the vehicle first reachesa speed of approximately 6 mph (10 km/h). Thebrake pedal will pulsate several times and asound may be audible from the ABS controlmodule. This is normal.
Fuel filler doorPress the button on the light switch panel (seethe illustration in Refueling – opening/closingfuel filler door (p. 282)) when the vehicle is at astandstill to unlock the fuel filler door. It willrelock when closed and there will be an audibleclick.
Points to keep in mind
• Do not export your Volvo to another countrybefore investigating that country's applicablesafety and exhaust emission requirements. Insome cases it may be difficult or impossibleto comply with these requirements. Modifica-tions to the emission control system(s) mayrender your Volvo not certifiable for legal

Engine temperature
Engine overheating can result from low oil or coolant levels, towing or hard driving at high heatand altitude, or mechanical malfunction. Engineoverheating will be signaled with text and a redwarning triangle in the middle of the instrumentdisplay. The exact text will depend on the degree of overheating. It may range from

also be displayed. If your engine does overheat so that you must stop the engine, always allowthe engine to cool before attempting to check oiland coolant levels. See Engine compartment – coolant (p. 333) for more information.
Fault in brake system
If this symbol lights, the brake fluid level may be too low. Stop the vehicle in a safe place andcheck the level in the brake fluid reservoir, seeEngine compartment – brake fluid (p. 334). If the level in the reservoir is below MIN, the vehicle
should be transported to an authorized Volvo workshop to have the brake system checked. If the

the same time, there may be a fault in the brake force distribution system. 1. Stop the vehicle in a safe place and turn off
the engine.
2. Restart the engine.
• If both symbols extinguish, continue driving.
• If the symbols remain on, check the level inthe brake fluid reservoir, see Engine com-partment – brake fluid (p. 334). If the brakefluid level is normal but the symbols are stilllit, the vehicle can be driven, with great care,to an authorized Volvo workshop to have thebrake system checked.
• If the level in the reservoir is below
MIN, the
vehicle should be transported to an author-ized Volvo workshop to have the brake sys-tem checked.
WARNING
• If the fluid level is below the
MIN mark in
the reservoir or if a warning message is displayed in the text window: DO NOT

trained and qualified Volvo service techni- cian and have the brake system inspec-ted.

Warning symbol
The red warning symbol lights up to indicate a problem related to safety and/or drivability. Amessage will also appear in the instrument panel.The symbol remains visible until the fault hasbeen rectified but the text message can be cleared with the OK button, see Information dis-
play – menu controls (p. 108). The warning sym- bol can also come on in conjunction with othersymbols. Action:
1. Stop in a safe place. Do not drive the vehicle further.
2. Read the information on the display. Imple- ment the action in accordance with the mes- sage in the display. Clear the message using OK.

WARNING
Driving with the trunk open:
Driving with the
trunk open could lead to poisonous exhaust gases entering the passenger compartment. Ifthe trunk must be kept open for any reason,proceed as follows:
• Close the windows
• Set the ventilation system control to airflow to floor, windshield and side windowsand the blower control to its highest set-ting.
Handling and roadholdingAt the specified curb weight your vehicle has a tendency to understeer, which means that thesteering wheel has to be turned more than mightseem appropriate for the curvature of a bend.This ensures good stability and reduces the riskof rear wheel skid. Remember that these proper-ties can alter with the vehicle load. The heavierthe load in the trunk, the less the tendency toundersteer. • Vehicle load, tire design and inflation pres- sure all affect vehicle handling. Therefore,check that the tires are inflated to the rec-ommended pressure according to the vehicleload. Loads should be distributed so that capacity weight or maximum permissible axleloads are not exceeded.
• At the specified curb weight your vehicle hasa tendency to understeer, which means thatthe steering wheel has to be turned morethan might seem appropriate for the curva-ture of a bend. This ensures good stabilityand reduces the risk of rear wheel skid.Remember that these properties can alterwith the vehicle load. The heavier the load inthe trunk, the less the tendency to under-steer.

Towing a trailer When towing a trailer, always observe the legal requirements of the state/province.
NOTE

All Volvo models are equipped with energy- absorbing shock-mounted bumpers. Trailerhitch installation should not interfere with theproper operation of this bumper system.
Trailer towing does not normally present any par-ticular problems, but take into consideration:
• Increase tire pressure to recommended fullpressure, see the tire inflation decal on thedriver's door opening.
• When your vehicle is new, avoid towing heavytrailers during the first 620 miles (1,000 km).
• Maximum speed when towing a trailer:50 mph (80 km/h).
• Engine and transmission are subject toincreased loads. Therefore, engine coolanttemperature should be closely watched whendriving in hot climates or hilly terrain. Use alower gear and turn off the air conditioner ifthe temperature gauge needle enters the redrange.

The appearance of the engine compartment may vary depending on engine model.
WARNING
The cooling fan (located at the front of the engine compartment, behind the radiator) maystart or continue to operate (for up to6 minutes) after the engine has beenswitched off.
WARNING
Before performing any operations in the engine compartment, the ignition should always be completely switched off (in mode 0,
see Ignition modes (p. 74)) and there should be no remote keys in the passenger compart- ment. The gear selector should be in the P
(park) position. If the engine has been run- ning, wait until it has cooled before touchingany components in the engine compartment. The distributor ignition system operates at very high voltages. Special safety precautionsmust be followed to prevent injury. Alwaysturn the ignition off when:
• Replacing distributor ignition componentse.g. plugs, coil, etc.
• Do not touch any part of the distributorignition system while the engine is run-ning. This may result in unintended move-ments and body injury.

CAUTION
•If Oil service required is displayed, the
oil level may be too high. Take the vehicle to an authorized Volvo workshop as soonas possible.
• If the oil level sensor indicates that thelevel is too low, using the correct oil, topup with the amount of oil indicated assoon as possible, see oil specifica-tions (p. 376).
WARNING
Do not allow oil to spill onto or come into con- tact with hot exhaust pipe surfaces.
Electronically checking the oil level
The oil level should be checked at regular inter- vals, particularly during the period up to the firstscheduled maintenance service. To check the oil level:1.
Activate ignition mode II, see Ignition modes
(p. 74).
2. Turn the thumb wheel on the left steering wheel lever until
Oil level is displayed.
> The oil level will be displayed.
NOTE
• The system cannot detect changes in the oil level immediately. The vehicle must bedriven approximately 20 miles (30 km) orhave been parked on level ground withthe engine off for 5 minutes before theoil level reading will be correct.
• If the necessary conditions are not metfor checking the oil level electronically(time interval after the engine wasswitched off, if the vehicle is parked on an incline, etc.),
No values available will
be displayed. This does not indicate a
problem with the oil level sensor.
Engine compartment – coolant
Normally, the coolant does not need to be changed. If the system must be drained, consulta trained and qualified Volvo service technician.

CAUTION
•If necessary, top up the cooling system with Volvo Genuine Coolant/Antifreezeonly (a 50/50 mix of water and anti-freeze).
• Different types of antifreeze/coolant maynot be mixed.
• If the cooling system is drained, it shouldbe flushed with clean water or premixedanti-freeze before it is refilled with thecorrect mixture of water/anti-freeze.
• The cooling system must always be keptfilled to the correct level, and the level must be between the
MIN and MAX
marks. If it is not kept filled, there can be high local temperatures in the enginewhich could result in damage. Checkcoolant regularly!
• Do not top up with water only. Thisreduces the rust-protective and anti-freeze qualities of the coolant and has alower boiling point. It can also causedamage to the cooling system if it shouldfreeze.
• Do not use chlorinated tap water in thevehicle's cooling system.
WARNING
•
Never remove the expansion tank cap while the engine is warm. Wait until theengine cools.
• If it is necessary to top off the coolantwhen the engine is warm, unscrew theexpansion tank cap slowly so that theoverpressure dissipates.
Engine compartment – brake fluid
The brake fluid should always be between the MIN and MAX marks on the inside of the reser-
voir.
