WARNING
Carbon monoxide is a poisonous, colorless, and odorless gas. It is present in all exhaustgases. If you ever smell exhaust fumes insidethe vehicle, make sure the passenger com-partment is ventilated, and immediately returnthe vehicle to a trained and qualified Volvoservice technician for correction.
Demanding driving
In demanding driving conditions, such as whentowing a trailer or driving in hot weather or forprolonged periods at high altitudes, it may be a
good idea to switch to a higher-octane fuel (AKI5
91 or higher) or to switch to another brand ofgasoline in order to fully utilize the vehicle'sengine capacity and optimize traction.

Three-way catalytic converter
Keep your engine properly tuned. Certainengine malfunctions, particularly involving theelectrical, fuel or distributor ignition systems, may cause unusually high three-way catalyticconverter temperatures. Do not continue tooperate your vehicle if you detect enginemisfire, noticeable loss of power or otherunusual operating conditions, such as engineoverheating or backfiring. A properly tunedengine will help avoid malfunctions thatcould damage the three-way catalytic con-verter.
Do not park your vehicle over combustiblematerials, such as grass or leaves, which cancome into contact with the hot exhaust sys-tem and cause such materials to ignite undercertain wind and weather conditions.
Excessive starter cranking (in excess of oneminute), or an intermittently firing or floodedengine can cause three-way catalytic con-verter or exhaust system overheating.
Remember that tampering or unauthorizedmodifications to the engine, the Engine Con-trol Module, or the vehicle may be illegal andcan cause three-way catalytic converter orexhaust system overheating. This includes:altering fuel injection settings or compo-nents, altering emission system components
or location or removing components, and/orrepeated use of leaded fuel.
NOTE
Unleaded fuel is required for vehicles withthree-way catalytic converters.
Heated oxygen sensors
The heated oxygen sensors monitor the oxygencontent of the exhaust gases. Readings are fedinto a control module that continuously monitorsengine functions and controls fuel injection. Theratio of fuel to air into the engine is continuouslyadjusted for efficient combustion to help reduceharmful emissions.

Engine oil
For the recommended service intervals and war-ranties to be applied, an approved engine oilmust be used.
Volvo recommends:
If the engine oil is not checked regularly and thelevel becomes low, this could cause seriousengine damage.
CAUTION
To satisfy the requirements for the engine'sservice intervals, all engines are factory-filledwith a specially adapted synthetic engine oil.Great care has been put into the choice of oil, with consideration given to service life, starta-bility, fuel consumption and environmentalimpact.
For the recommended service intervals toapply, an approved engine oil must be used.Only use the prescribed oil grade to top off orchange the oil. Otherwise, there is a risk ofthe vehicle's service life, startability, fuel con-sumption and environmental impact beingaffected.
Failure to use engine oil of the prescribedgrade and viscosity could cause damage toengine-related components. Volvo Car Corpo-ration disclaims warranty liability for such typeof damage.
Volvo recommends entrusting oil changes toan authorized Volvo workshop.
Volvo uses different systems to warn if the oillevel is too low/high or the oil pressure is low. Onengine variants with an oil pressure sensor, a
warning symbol is displayed in the instrument
panel when oil pressure is low . On engine
variants with an oil level sensor, the warn-ing symbol in the instrument panel and displaymessages are used to alert the driver. Someengine variants have both systems. Contact aVolvo retailer for more information.
Change the engine oil and oil filter according tothe schedule specified in the Warranty and Main-tenance Records Information booklet. Oils of ahigher grade than that specified may be used. Ifthe vehicle is driven in adverse conditions, Volvorecommends using an oil with a higher gradethan that specified.

The engine oil level is monitored by an electronicoil level sensor.
Filler pipe13.
It may be necessary to top up engine oil betweenregularly scheduled services.
No action is necessary with regard to engine oillevel until a message appears in the instrumentpanel.
WARNING
If this symbol is shown togetherwith the message Engine oil levelService required, visit a workshop– an authorized Volvo workshop isrecommended. The oil level may be too high.
CAUTION
If this symbol is shown togetherwith a message about low oil level, for example Engine oil level lowRefill 1 liter, fill only with the indi-cated volume, e.g. 1 liter (1 quart).
WARNING
Do not spill oil on the hot exhaust pipes asthis could cause a fire.
Viewing oil level in the center display
The oil level can be viewed using the electronicoil level gauge in the center display once thevehicle has been started. The oil level should bechecked regularly.
1.Open the Car Status app from App view inthe center display.
2.Tap Status to display the oil level.
Oil level graphic in the center display.
NOTE
The system cannot directly detect changeswhen the oil is filled or drained. The vehiclemust have been driven approximately 30 km(20 miles) and have been stationary5 minutes on a level surface and with theengine off before the correct oil level will bedisplayed.
13Engines with an electronic oil level sensor do not have a dipstick.

Automatic car washes
The vehicle should be washed as soon as itbecomes dirty. This makes the vehicle easier toclean because dirt does not attach as strongly. Italso reduces the risk of scratches and keeps thevehicle looking new.
An automatic car wash is a fast and easy way tokeep your vehicle clean, but it does not reach allareas of the vehicle. For best results, Volvo rec-ommends hand washing your vehicle or supple-menting automatic car washes with a hand wash.
NOTE
Volvo recommends not washing the vehicle inan automatic car wash during the first fewmonths; the paintwork on new vehicles takessome time to fully harden.
CAUTION
Before driving the vehicle into a car wash, deactivate the Automatic Braking when Sta-tionary and Automatic Parking Brake Applica-tion functions. If the functions are not deacti-vated, the brake system will seize when thevehicle is stationary and the vehicle will not beable to roll.
CAUTION
For automatic car washes in which the vehicleis pulled forward on rolling wheels:
1. Before washing the vehicle, make surethat the automatic rain sensor is deacti-vated. If it is not deactivated and inadver-tently starts, the wiper arms could bedamaged.
2.To help prevent damage from the auto-matic car wash machinery, make surethat the door mirrors are folded in, anten-nas retracted or removed, and any auxili-ary lights secured.
3. Drive into the automatic car wash.
4. Turn off the "Automatic Braking when
Stationary" function using the buttonin the tunnel console.
5. Turn off the "Automatic Parking BrakeApplication" function in the center dis-play's Top view.
6.Turn off the engine by turning the startknob in the tunnel console clockwise.Hold the knob in position for at least2 seconds.
The vehicle is now ready for the automatic carwash.
CAUTION
The system will automatically change to Pmode if the above steps are not followed. In Pmode, the wheels are locked, which theyshould not be when the vehicle is beingwashed in a car wash.
