Charging current Charging current is used to charge the hybrid battery and precondition the vehicle. Charging isperformed by connecting a charging cablebetween the vehicle's charging socket and a120/240 V electrical socket (alternating cur-rent).
When the charging cable is activated, a message will be displayed in the instrument panel and anindicator light in the vehicle's charging socket willilluminate. Charging current is primarily used forbattery charging, but is also used for precondi-tioning. The vehicle's start battery is chargedalong with the hybrid battery.
CAUTION
Never detach the charging cable from the 120/240 V outlet (AC, alternating current)while charging is in progress – the120/240 V outlet could be damaged in suchcircumstances. Always interrupt charging firstand then disconnect the charging cable – firstfrom the vehicle's charging socket and thenfrom the 120/240 V outlet.
NOTE
• In extremely cold or hot weather, part of the charging current is used to heat/coolthe hybrid battery and the passengercompartment, resulting in a longer charg-ing time.
• The charging time is longer if precondi-tioning has been selected. The timerequired depends primarily on the ambi-ent temperature.
There are normally several 120/240 V power consumers in one fuse circuit, which means thatmore than one power consumer (e.g. lighting, vacuum cleaner, electric drill, etc.) may use thesame fuse.

•Disconnect the charger from the wall out- let before cleaning it.
• Never connect the charging cable to anextension cord or a multiple plug socket.
Also, refer to the manufacturer's instructions for using the charging cable and its compo-nents.
CAUTION
Make sure that the 120/240 V outlet (AC, alternating current) has a power capacity suf-ficient for charging electric vehicles. If you areuncertain of the capacity, have the outletchecked by a licensed electrician.
Take out the charging cable from the storage compartment under the cargo area. Note that the ignition must be switched off completely beforecharging.
Plug the charging cable into a 120/240 V outlet. Never use an extension cord.
Open the charger door. Push the charging handle all the way into the vehicle's socket.3. The charging cable handle will lock into
place and charging will begin within5 seconds. When charging starts, the greenLED light in the charging socket will begin toflash. The approximate remaining chargingtime or the charging status will be displayedin the instrument panel. Charging may be temporarily interrupted if the vehicle is unlocked:
• and a door is open
‒ charging will restart
within a few minutes.
• if no door is opened
‒ the vehicle will
automatically relock. Charging will resumeafter 1 minute.
During charging, condensation from the air con- ditioning may form under the vehicle. This is nor-mal and is caused by the hybrid battery cooling.

GraphicMessageMeaning
Fully charged at: [Time] displayed along with an animated blue puls-
ing light through the charging cable. Charging is in progress and the approximate time at which the battery will be fully charged is displayed.
Charging complete is displayed. An image will be superimposed over
the graphic of the vehicle with a green LED indicator light in the socket. The battery is fully charged.
Charging error will be displayed. The LED indicator light in the charg-
ing socket will be red. Malfunction. Make sure the charging cable is correctly con- nected to the vehicle's charging socket and to the 120/240 Voutlet (alternating current).

Long-term storage of vehicles withhybrid batteries To help minimize degradation of the hybrid bat- tery if the vehicle is not driven for a prolongedperiod (longer than 1 month) the hybrid batterycharge level should be kept at approx. 25%according to the gauge in the instrument panel.
Do as follows:
1. If the hybrid battery charge level is high, drivethe vehicle until the charge level is approxi- mately 25%. If the charge level is low, chargethe battery until the level reaches approxi-mately 25%. 2. If the vehicle is not driven for more than 6
months or the hybrid battery's charge level isnoticeably below the 25% mark, charge thebattery to about 25% to help compensate forthe natural battery discharge that occurs inlong-term storage. Regularly check thecharge level using the gauge in the instru-ment display.
NOTE
Store the vehicle in as cool a location as pos- sible to minimize battery aging during long-term storage. In the summer, park the vehicleindoors or in a shady location, whichever iscooler.

Starting the vehicle
The vehicle can be started using the start knob in the tunnel console when the remote key is inthe passenger compartment.
Start knob in the tunnel console.
WARNING
Before starting:
• Buckle your seat belt.
• Adjust the seat, steering wheel and mir- rors.
• Make sure you can fully depress thebrake pedal. The remote key is not physically used to start theignition because the vehicle is equipped with thekeyless Passive Start system. To start the vehicle:
1. The remote key must be inside the vehicle.
For vehicles with Passive Start, the key must be in the front section of the passengercompartment. With the optional keyless lock- ing/unlocking function *, the key can be any-
where in the vehicle.
2. Press and hold down the brake pedal 1
as far
as possible.
3. Turn the start knob clockwise and release. The control will automatically return to the original position.
WARNING
• Never use more than one inlay mat at a time on the driver's floor. If any other typeof floor mat is used, remove the originalmat from the driver's seat floor beforedriving. All types of mats must be securelyanchored in the attachment points in thefloor. Make sure the floor mat does notimpede the movement of the brake pedalor accelerator pedal in any way, as thiscould be a serious safety hazard.
• Volvo's floor mats are specially manufac-tured for your vehicle. They must be prop-erly secured in the attachment points inthe floor to help ensure they cannot slideand become trapped under the pedals.
The starter motor will crank until the enginestarts or until its overheating protection is trig-gered. During normal start conditions, the vehicle's elec- tric motor will be prioritized and the gasolineengine will remain off. This means that once thestart knob is turned clockwise, the electric motorhas been "started" and the vehicle is ready to bedriven. The warning and information symbols inthe instrument panel will go out and the selectedtheme will be displayed to indicate that the elec-tric motor is activated.
1 If the vehicle is moving, it is only necessary to turn the start knob clockwise to start the engine.

Ignition modes
The vehicle's ignition can be put in various modes (levels) to make different functions availa-ble.
To enable the use of a limited number of func- tions when the engine is not running, the ignition can be put in one of three different levels: 0, I
and II. These levels are referred to as "ignition
modes" in the Owner's Manual. The following table shows which functions are available in each ignition mode:
ModeFunctions
0 •The odometer, clock and tem- perature gauge are illuminated A
.
• The power seats
* can be
adjusted.
• The power windows can be used.
• The center display is activatedand can be used A
.
• The 12 V outlet in the cargo com- partment
* can be used.
• The infotainment system can be used A
.
In this ignition mode, the functions are available for a limited time and then switch off automatically.
I •The panoramic roof, power win-dows, 12 V outlet in passengercompartment, Bluetooth, naviga-tion, phone, blower and wind-shield wipers can be used.
• The power seats can be adjusted.
• The 12 V outlet in the cargo com-partment can be used.
Electrical current will be takenfrom the battery in this ignitionmode.
