The alarm is automatically armed whenever you lock your vehicle. When armed, the alarm continuously moni- tors a number of points on the vehicle. Thefollowing conditions will set off the alarm: •
The hood is forced open.
• The tailgate is forced open.
• A door is forced open.
• The ignition switch is tampered with.
• If there is movement in the passenger compartment (if the vehicle is equippedwith the optional movement sensor).
• The vehicle is lifted or towed (if the vehi-cle is equipped with the optional inclina-tion sensor).
• The battery is disconnected (while thealarm is armed).
• The siren is disconnected when the alarmis disarmed.
Arming the alarm1. Press the
LOCK button on the remote
key.
2. Lock the vehicle using the key blade in the driver's door or press the central lock button on the driver's door with the dooropen.
One long flash of the turn signals will confirmthat the alarm is armed.
Movement sensor*In addition to triggering the alarm if there ismovement in the passenger compartment,currents of air may also affect the movementsensor. This means that locking the vehiclewith the windows or the moonroof open, orusing an accessory portable passenger com-partment heater, could trigger the alarm. To help avoid this, close the windows and moonroof before locking the vehicle. If a pas-senger compartment heater is used when thevehicle is locked, direct airflow from the heat-er's vent(s) so that it isn't directed upward inthe passenger compartment.
Disarming the alarmPress the UNLOCK button on the remote key
or unlock the doors with the key blade.
Turning off (stopping) the alarmIf the alarm is sounding, it can be stopped bypressing the UNLOCK button on the remote
key or by unlocking the driver's door with thekey blade.
Visual alarm signalThe visual alarm signal is given by flashing allturn signals and turning on the interior lightingfor approximately 5 minutes.
Audible alarm signalAn audible alarm signal is given by a batterypowered siren. One alarm cycle lasts for25 seconds.
"Panic" buttonIn an emergency situation, this feature can beused to attract attention. Activate the "panic" button by pressing the red button on the remote key ( see page 127for illustration) for at least 3 seconds or bypressing this button twice within 3 seconds.The turn signals will flash, and the vehicle'shorn will sound. The function can be turned off by pressing any of the buttons on the remote key or willstop automatically after 25 seconds. When abutton is pressed, there is a 5 second delaybefore the panic alarm is deactivated.
NOTE
This button will NOT unlock the vehicle.
LED alarm status signalsThe status of the alarm system is indicated by the red LED at the top of the dash: • LED off – the alarm is not armed
• LED flashes once per second – the alarm is armed

Engine oil
Although some oil consumption occurs dur- ing normal engine operation, more oil is con-sumed when the engine is new as the internalparts generate higher friction while wearing-into each other. From the time the engine isnew until the first maintenance is performed,the oil consumption could be higher than nor-mal. For this reason, it is especially importantto check the oil regularly during this period,see page 222.
Fuel requirements
Deposit control gasoline (detergent additives)
Volvo recommends the use of detergent gas- oline to control engine deposits. Detergentgasoline is effective in keeping injectors andintake valves clean. Consistent use of depositcontrol gasolines will help ensure good driva-bility and fuel economy. If you are not surewhether the gasoline contains deposit controladditives, check with the service station oper-ator.
NOTE
Volvo does not recommend the use of external fuel injector cleaning systems.
Unleaded fuelEach Volvo has a three-way catalytic con- verter and must use only unleaded gasoline.U.S. and Canadian regulations require thatpumps delivering unleaded gasoline be label-led "UNLEADED". Only these pumps havenozzles which fit your vehicle's filler inlet. It isunlawful to dispense leaded fuel into a vehiclelabelled "unleaded gasoline only". Leadedgasoline damages the three-way catalyticconverter and the heated oxygen sensor sys-tem. Repeated use of leaded gasoline willlessen the effectiveness of the emission con-trol system and could result in loss of emis-sion warranty coverage. State and local vehi-cle inspection programs will make detectionof misfueling easier, possibly resulting inemission test failure for misfueled vehicles.
NOTE
Some U.S. and Canadian gasolines con- tain an octane enhancing additive calledmethyl-cyclopentadienyl manganese tri-carbonyl (MMT). If such fuels are used,your Emission Control System perform-ance may be affected, and the CheckEngine Light (malfunction indicator lamp)located on your instrument panel maylight. If this occurs, please return yourvehicle to a trained and qualified Volvoservice technician for maintenance.
Gasoline containing alcohol and ethers"Oxygenated fuels" Some fuel suppliers sell gasoline containing "oxygenates" which are usually alcohols orethers. In some areas, state or local lawsrequire that the service pump be marked indi-cating use of alcohols or ethers. However,there are areas in which the pumps areunmarked. If you are not sure whether there isalcohol or ethers in the gasoline you buy,check with the service station operator. Tomeet seasonal air quality standards, someareas require the use of "oxygenated" fuel. Volvo allows the use of the following "oxy- genated" fuels; however, the octane ratingslisted on page 139 must still be met. Alcohol – Ethanol: Fuels containing up to 10% ethanol by volume may be used. Ethanolmay also be referred to as Ethyl alcohol, or"Gasohol". Ethers – MTBE: Fuels containing up to 15% MTBE may be used.

Front/rear park assist
The park assist system is designed to assist you when driving into parking spaces,garages, etc. It utilizes four ultrasound sen-sors located in one or both bumpers to meas-ure the distance to a vehicle, object, or a per-son who may be close to the front or rear ofyour vehicle. Park assist is available in two versions:
• Rear bumper only
• Front and rear bumpers
WARNING
Park Assist is an information system, NOT a safety system. This system is designedto be a supplementary aid when parkingthe vehicle. It is not, however, intended toreplace the driver's attention and judge-ment.
Function
The system is activated automatically when the vehicle is started. The indicator light in thebutton in the center console illuminates. • The front park assist system is active from the time the engine is started untilthe vehicle exceeds a speed of approxi-mately 10 mph (15 km/h). It is also activewhen the vehicle is backing up.
• Rear park assist is active when the engineis running and reverse gear has beenselected.
Rear park assistThe distance monitored behind the vehicle is approximately 5 ft (1.5 m). The signal comesfrom the rear speakers. The system must be deactivated when towing a trailer, carrying bicycles in a rear-mountedcarrier, etc, which could trigger the rear parkassist system's sensors.
NOTE
Rear park assist is deactivated automati- cally when towing a trailer if Volvo genuinetrailer wiring is used.
Front park assistThe distance monitored in front of the vehicle is approximately 2.5 ft (0.8 m). The audiblesignal comes from the audio system's frontspeakers.
• It may not be possible to combine auxili- ary headlights and front park assist sincethese lights could trigger the system'ssensors.
Activating/deactivating park assist
The system is activated automatically when the vehicle is started.
• Press the Park assist button on the center console (see page 65) to temporarilydeactivate the system(s). The indicatorlight in the button will go out when thesystem has been deactivated.
• Park assist will be automatically reactiva-ted the next time the engine is started, orif the button is pressed (the indicator lightin the button will illuminate).

NOTE
• Front park assist is disengaged auto- matically when the parking brake isapplied.
• If the vehicle is equipped with frontand rear park assist, both systems willbe deactivated by pressing the button.
Audible signals from the park assist system
The Park Assist system uses an intermittent tone that pulses faster as you come close toan object, and becomes constant when youare within approximately 1 ft (30 cm) of anobject in front of or behind the vehicle. If thevolume of another source from the audio sys-tem is high, this will be automatically lowered. If there are objects within this distance both behind and in front of the vehicle, the signalalternates between front and rear speakers.
Faults in the system
If the yellow warning symbol illu- minates and PARK ASSIST
SERVICE REQUIRED is shown
on the information display, this indicates that the system is not
functioning properly and has been disen-gaged. Consult a trained and qualified Volvoservice technician.
CAUTION
In certain circumstances, the park assist system may give unexpected warning sig-nals that can be caused by external soundsources that use the same ultrasound fre-quencies as the system. This may includesuch things as the horns of other vehicles,wet tires on asphalt, pneumatic brakes,motorcycle exhaust pipes, etc. This doesnot indicate a fault in the system.
Cleaning the sensors

Park assist sensors The sensors must be cleaned regularly to ensure that they work properly. Clean themwith water and a suitable car washing deter-gent. Ice and snow covering the sensors may cause incorrect warning signals.
NOTE
If the sensors are obstructed by e.g., dirt, snow, or ice, this could result in falsewarning signals from the park assist sys-tem.

NOTE
The air pressure gauge will temporarily show an increase in pressure to approxi-mately 88 psi (6 bar) while the sealingcompound is being pumped into the tire.The pressure should return to a normallevel after approximately 30 seconds.
10. Within seven minutes, inflate the tire tobetween 22—44 psi (1.8—3.0 bar). Switch off the compressor briefly to get aclear reading from the pressure gauge.
CAUTION
The compressor should not be used for more than 10 minutes at a time to avoidoverheating.
WARNING
If the pressure remains below 22 psi (1.8 bar) after approximately sevenminutes, turn off the compressor. In thiscase, the hole is too large to be sealed andthe vehicle should not be driven.
11. Switch off the compressor and discon-nect the electrical wire from the 12-volt socket. 12. Unscrew the hose from the tire’s inflation
valve and reinstall the valve cap.
CAUTION
•After pumping the tires, always reinstall the valve cap to help avoid damage tothe valve from dirt, gravel, etc.
• Use plastic valve caps only. Metal capscould corrode and become difficult toremove.
13. Immediately drive the vehicle for approxi-
mately 2 miles (3 km) at a maximum speed of 50 mph (80 km/h) to distributethe sealing compound in the tire.
CAUTION
If your vehicle is equipped with the Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), theuse of the sealing compound may lead toincorrect tire pressure readings or in rarecases, damage to the tire pressure sensor.Use the tire sealing system to check andadjust the damaged tire's inflation pres-sure.
NOTE
•Safely stow the tire sealing system in a convenient place as it will soon beused again to check the tire’s inflationpressure.
• The empty bottle of sealing compoundcannot be removed from the bottleholder. Consult a trained and qualifiedVolvo service technician to have thebottle removed and properly disposedof.
WARNING
If heavy vibrations, unsteady steering behavior, or noises should occur whiledriving, reduce speed and park the vehiclein a safe place. Recheck the tire forbumps, cracks, or other visible damage,and recheck its inflation pressure. If thepressure is below 19 psi (1.3 bar), do notcontinue driving. Have the vehicle towedto a trained and qualified Volvo servicetechnician.
Stage 2: Checking inflation pressure1. Connect the tire sealing system as
described in stage 1.
2. Refer to the inflation pressure tables for the correct inflation pressure. If the tire needs to be inflated, start the tire sealing

The tire pressure monitoring system

uses
sensors mounted in the tire valves to check inflation pressure levels. When the vehicle ismoving at a speed of approximately 20 mph(30 km/h) or faster, these sensors transmitinflation pressure data to a receiver located inthe vehicle.

When low inflation pressure is detected, TPMS will light up the tire pressure warn-ing light (also referred to as a telltale) in theinstrument panel (see page 61), and willdisplay a message in the text window. Thewording of this message is determined bythe degree of inflation pressure loss.

When low inflation pressure is detected, TPMS will light up the tire pressure warning light
(also referred to as a telltale) in the instrument panel and will display one of the following messages in the text window:
LOW

NOTE
If a fault occurs in TPMS, the tire pressure warning light will flash for approximately 1 minute and

Each tire, including the spare (if provided), should be checked monthly when cold andinflated to the inflation pressure recom-mended by the vehicle manufacturer on thevehicle placard or tire inflation pressure label.(If your vehicle has tires of a different sizethan the size indicated on the vehicle placardor tire inflation pressure label, you shoulddetermine the proper tire inflation pressure forthose tires.) As an added safety feature, your vehicle has been equipped with a tire pressure monitor-ing system (TPMS) that illuminates a low tirepressure telltale when one or more of yourtires is significantly under-inflated. Accord-ingly, when the low tire pressure telltale illu-minates, you should stop and check yourtires as soon as possible, and inflate them to the proper pressure. Driving on a significantlyunder-inflated tire causes the tire to overheatand can lead to tire failure. Under-inflationalso reduces fuel efficiency and tire tread life,and may affect the vehicle's handling andstopping ability. Please note that the TPMS is not a substitute for proper tire maintenance, and it is the driv-er's responsibility to maintain correct tirepressure, even if under-inflation has notreached the level to trigger illumination of theTPMS low tire pressure telltale. Your vehicle has also been equipped with a TPMS malfunction indicator to indicate whenthe system is not operating properly. TheTPMS malfunction indicator is combined withthe low tire pressure telltale. When the sys-tem detects a malfunction, the telltale willflash for approximately one minute and thenremain continuously illuminated. Thissequence will continue upon subsequentvehicle start-ups as long as the malfunctionexists. When the malfunction indicator is illu-minated, the system may not be able todetect or signal low tire pressure as intended.TPMS malfunctions may occur for a variety ofreasons, including the installation of replace-ment or alternate tires or wheels on the vehi-cle that prevent the TPMS from functioning

properly. Always check the TPMS malfunc- tion telltale after replacing one or more tiresor wheels on your vehicle to ensure that thereplacement or alternate tires and wheelsallow the TPMS to continue to function prop-erly.
NOTE
TPMS indicates low tire pressure but does not replace normal tire maintenance. Forinformation on correct tire pressure, pleaserefer to the tire inflation pressure table inthis chapter or consult your Volvo retailer.
Erasing warning messagesWhen a low tire pressure warning message has been displayed, and the tire pressurewarning light has come on:
1. Use a tire pressure gauge to check theinflation pressure of all four tires.
2. Re-inflate the tire(s) to the correct pres- sure (consult the tire pressure placard or the table see page 183).
3. Drive the vehicle for several minutes at a speed of 20 mph (30 km/h) or faster.
> This will erase the warning text and thewarning light will go out.
WARNING
Incorrect inflation pressure could lead to tire failure, resulting in a loss of control ofthe vehicle.
Changing wheels with TPMSPlease note the following when changing or replacing the factory installed TPMS wheels/tires on the vehicle:
• Only the factory-mounted wheels are equipped with TPMS sensors in thevalves.
• If the vehicle is equipped with a tempo-rary spare tire, this tire does not have aTPMS sensor.
• If wheels without TPMS sensors are mounted on the vehicle,

played each time the vehicle is driven above 25 mph (40 km/h) for 10 minutes ormore.
• Once TPMS sensors are properly instal-led, the warning message should notreappear.
• Volvo recommends that TPMS sensorsbe fitted on all wheels used on the vehi-cle. Volvo does not recommend movingsensors back and forth between sets ofwheels.
NOTE
If a tire is changed or if the TPMS sensor is moved to another wheel, the sensor’svalve and valve core should be replaced.
CAUTION
When inflating tires with TPMS valves, press the pump's mouthpiece straightonto the valve to help avoid bending orotherwise damaging the valve.
Recalibrating TPMS (Canadian models only)
In certain cases, it may be necessary to reca- librate TPMS to conform to Volvo's recom-mended tire inflation pressures (see the infla-tion pressure table on page 183), for exam-ple, if higher inflation pressure is necessarywhen transporting heavy loads, etc. To recalibrate:
1. Switch off the engine.
2. Inflate the tires to the desired pressure
and turn the ignition key to position I or II
(see page 145 for additional information).
3. Turn the thumb wheel on the left-side steering wheel lever until

Oil specifications
Full synthetic engine oil meeting the minimum ACEA A5/B5 must be used. Lower quality oilsmay not offer the same fuel economy, engineperformance, or engine protection. Refer to the Warranty and Service Records information booklet for information on oilchange intervals and oil type requirements.
NOTE
This vehicle comes from the factory with synthetic oil.
Oil additives must not be used.
Oil viscosityIncorrect viscosity oil can shorten engine life under normal use. SAE 5W-30 will providegood fuel economy and engine protection.See the viscosity chart.

Extreme engine operationSAE 0W-30 oil meeting ACEA A5/B5 require- ments is recommended for driving in areaswith sustained low temperatures.
NOTE
Volvo uses different systems to indicate a low oil level or pressure. Some modelshave an oil pressure sensor, in which casea warning symbol (see page 60) is used toindicate low oil pressure. Other modelshave an oil level sensor, in which case thedriver is alerted by the warning symbol inthe center of the instrument panel and atext in the information display. Some mod-els use both systems. Contact a trainedand qualified Volvo service technician formore information.
