fastener screws.
3. Lower the cargo bed.EBU32360Engine oil and oil filter cartridgeCheck engine oil level before each operation.
In addition, change the oi l and the oil filter car-
tridge at the intervals specified in the periodic
maintenance and lubrication chart.
To check the engine oil level 1. Park the vehicle on a level surface.
2. Check the engine oil level on a cold en- gine.TIPIf the engine was started before checking the
oil level, be sure to warm up the engine suffi-
ciently, and then wait at least 10 minutes until
the oil settles for an accurate reading.
3. Lift the cargo bed up. (See page 4-24 forcargo bed lifting and lowering proce-
dures.)
4. Remove the engine oil dipstick, and then wipe it off with a clean rag.
5. Insert the dipstick completely into the oil filler hole, and then remove it again to
check the oil level.TIPThe engine oil should be between the mini-
mum and maximum level marks. 1. Engine oil dipstick

6. If the engine oil is at or below the mini-mum level mark, remove the right rear
panel, and then add sufficient oil of the
recommended type to raise it to the cor-
rect level. (See page 8-11 for right rear
panel removal and installation proce-
dures.)
7. Insert the dipstick completely into the oil filler hole, and then install the panel.
8. Lower the cargo bed. To change the engine oil (with or without
oil filter cartridge replacement)

3. Lift the cargo bed up. (See page 4-24 for cargo bed lifting and lowering proce-
dures.)
4. Remove the right rear panel. (See page 8-11 for right rear panel removal and ins-
tallation procedures.)
5. Place an oil pan under the engine to col- lect the used oil, and then remove the
dipstick.

TIPSkip steps 7–9 if the oil filter cartridge is not
being replaced. 7. Remove the oil filter cartridge with an oilfilter wrench. Make sure that the O-ring is
removed together with the oil filter car-
tridge. If the O-ring remains attached to
the crankcase, oil leakage may occur.
TIPAn oil filter wrench is available from a Yamaha
dealer. 8. Apply a light coat of clean engine oil tothe O-ring of the new oil filter cartridge.TIPMake sure that the O-ring is properly seated.

TIPBe sure to wipe off spilled oil on any parts af-
ter the engine and exhaust system have
cooled down. NOTICEECB00301In order to prevent clutch slippage (since
the engine oil also lubricates the clutch),
do not mix any chemical additives. Do
not use oils with a diesel specification of
“CD” or oils of a higher quality than
specified. In addition, do not use oils la-
beled “ENERGY CONSERVING II” or
higher. 
Make sure that no foreign material en-
ters the crankcase.
12. Start the engine, and then let it idle for
several minutes while checking it for oil
leakage. If oil is leaking, immediately turn
the engine off and check for the cause.
13. Turn the engine off, wait at least 10 minu-
tes, and then check the oil level and cor-
rect it if necessary.
14. Install the panel.
15. Lower the cargo bed.EBU32370Final gear oilChecking the final gear oil level 1. Park the vehicle on a level surface.
2. Remove the final gear oil filler bolt and its
gasket, and then check the oil level in the
final gear case. The oil level should be at
the brim of the filler hole.
Recommended engine oil:See page 10-1.
Oil quantity: Without oil filter cartridge replacement:2.20 L (2.33 US qt, 1.94 Imp.qt)
With oil filter cartridge replacement: 2.30 L (2.43 US qt, 2.02 Imp.qt)

EBU32391CoolantThe coolant level should be checked before
each ride. In addition, the coolant must be
changed at the intervals specified in the peri-
odic maintenance and lubrication chart.
Checking the coolant level1. Park the vehicle on a level surface.
2. Check the coolant level in the coolant reservoir when the engine is cold as the
coolant level varies with engine tempera-
ture.TIPThe coolant should be between the minimum
and maximum level marks.

WARNING
EWB01891Wait for the engine and
radiator to cool be-
fore removing the radiator cap. You could
be burned by hot fluid and steam blown
out under pressure. Always place a thick
rag over the cap when opening. Allow any
remaining pressure to escape before com-
pletely removing the cap. 1. Park the vehicle on a level surface.
2. Remove the hood. (See page 8-10 for hood removal and installation proce-
dures.)
3. Remove the right rear panel. (See page 8-11 for right rear panel removing and in-
stalling procedures.)
4. Place a container under the engine to col- lect the used coolant.
