Adjusting the steering wheel position
The steering wheel position is fully adjustable
up and down and forward and bock .

_& WARNING
Improper use of steering wheel adjust­
ment and improper seating position can
cause serious personal injury.
- Adjust the steering wheel column only
when the veh icle is not moving to pre­
vent loss of vehicle control.
- Adjust the driver's seat or steering wheel
so that there is a min imum of 10 inches
(25 cm) between your chest and the
steering wheel¢
page 122, fig. 109 . If
you cannot maintain this minimum dis­
tance, the airbag system cannot protect
you properly.
- If phys ica l limitations prevent you from
sitting 10 inches (25 cm) or more from
the steering wheel, check w ith your au­
thorized Aud i dealer to see if adaptive
equipment is availab le .
- If the steering wheel is alig ned with your
face, the supplemental driver's airbag cannot p rovid e as much protectio n in an
accident. Always make sure that the steer
ing whee l is aligned with your
chest.
- Always hold the steering wheel with your
hands at the 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock posi­
tions to reduce the risk of personal injury
if the driver's airbag deploys.
- Never hold the steering wheel at the 12
o'clock position or with your hands inside
the steering wheel rim or on the steering
wheel hub. Holding the steering wheel
the wrong way can cause serious injuries
to the hands, arms and head if the driv­
er's airbag deploys.
Ignition lock
Depending on the model, your vehicle has the
follow ing equipment:

Steering wheel lock
If the steering wheel will not turn, the steer­
ing lock is engaged .
To engage the steering wheel lock: The selec­
tor lever must be in the P position (automatic
transmission*). ..,.

-Vehicles with an automatic transmission:
After switching the ignition off, you can
only remove the key when the selector
lever is in the "P" (Park) position. After
that, the selector lever is locked.
Stopping the engine with the key
Applies to vehicles: with mechanical ignition lock
Stopping the engine
... Bring the vehicle to a full stop .
... Turn the key to position @.
Engaging the steering wheel lock
Requirement: The selector lever must be in
the P position (automatic transmission*).

steering wheel lock.
The locked steering helps prevent vehicle
theft.
A WARNING
- Never turn off the engine before the ve­
hicle has come to a complete stop. The
full function of the brake booster and the
power steering is not guaranteed. You
must use more force to turn or brake, if
necessary . Because you cannot steer and
brake as you usually would, this could
lead to accidents and serious injuries.
- Never remove the ignition key from the
ignition lock while the vehicle is moving.
Otherwise, the steering lock could sud­
denly engage and you would not be able
to steer the vehicle.
- The brake booster and power steering
only work when the engine is running. If
the engine is off, you have to use more
force when steering or braking. Because
you cannot steer and brake as you usual­ ly would, this could lead to crashes and
serious injuries.
- Always take the vehicle key with you
when leaving the vehicle, even for a
short period of time . This applies partic- ularly when children remain
in the vehi­
cle. Otherwise the children could start
the engine or operate electrical equip­ ment such as power windows.
- For safety reasons, you should always
park your vehicle with the selector lever
in P. Otherwise, the vehicle could inad­
vertently roll away.
- After the engine has been switched off,
the radiator fan can continue to run for
up to 10 minutes -even with the ignition
switched off.
It can also switch on again
after some time if the coolant tempera­
ture rises as the result of a heat buildup
or if the engine is hot and the engine
compartment is additionally heated by
the sun's rays .
(D Note
-If the engine has been under heavy load
for an extended period of time, heat builds up in the engine compartment af­
ter the engine is switched off -there is a
risk of damaging the @ngin@ . For this
reason, let the engine run for at idle for
approximately two minutes before shut ­
ting it off.
(D Tips
-After the engine has been switched off,
the radiator fan can continue to run for
up to 10 minutes -even with the ignition
switched off. It can also switch on again
after some time if the coolant tempera­
ture rises as a result of heat buildup or if
the engine compartment is heated by
sunlight and the engine is hot.

-After starting a cold engine, there may
be a brief period of increased noise be­
cause the oil pressure must first build up in the hydraulic valve adjusters. This is
normal and not a cause for concern.
- If the . indicator light blinks in the in­
strument cluster before switching the ig­
nition off, the ignition will not switch on
again

-If you leave your vehicle with the ignition
switched on, the ignition will switch off
after a certain amount of time. Make
sure that electrical equipment such as
the exterior lights are switched off.

Steering wheel lock1

The steering locks when you turn the engine
off using the
I START ENGINE STOP !* button,
move the selector lever into the P position
(automatic transmission*) and open the driv­
er's door.
The locked steering helps prevent vehicle
theft.
Emergency off function
If it is necessary in unusua l circumstances, the
engine can be switched off while the vehicle is
moving at speeds less than 6 mph (10 km/h).

Electromechanical
parking brake
Operation
The electromechanical parking brake replaces
the hand brake .

Your vehicle is equipped with an electrome ­
chanical pa rking brak e. The parking bra ke is
designed to p revent the veh icle from rolling
u ninte ntionally and repla ce s the hand b rake.
In add ition to the normal functions of a tradi ­
tio na l ha nd b rake, the electromechanical
parki ng b rake provides va rious conven ien ce
and safe ty f unct ions .
When starting

Emergency brake function
An emergency b rak ing functions ensu res that
t h e vehi cle can be s lowed down even if the
n ormal brakes f ail¢ page 78, Emergen cy
braking fun ction.
Indicator lights
- I f the pa rk ing brake is set when the ignition
is
switched on , the. (USA models) /.
(Canad a models) indica to r li ght turns on in
t he display and b utton .
- If the pa rk ing brake is se t when the ignition
is
switched off , the. (USA models) /.
(Canada mo dels) indica tor ligh t turns on in
the display and button for about 20 sec­
onds.

& WARNING
-Do not press the accelerator pedal inad­
vertently when the vehicle is stationary and the engine is running and a gear is
selected. Otherwise the vehicle will start
to move immediately and could result in
a crash.
- If the power supply fails, the released
parking brake can no longer engage. In
this case, park the vehicle on level ground and secure it by placing these­
lector lever in the P position (automatic
transmission). See your authorized Audi dealer or qualified repair facility.

If the symbol . in the display or the indi­
cator light. (USA models)/ . (Canada
models) in the instrument cluster flashes,
there is a malfunction in the brake system.

-You can set the parking brake at any time
-even with the ignition turned
off. To re-
lease the parking brake, the ignition
must be turned on and the brake pedal
must be pressed.
- If driver 's door is opened while the igni­
tion is switched on, the parking brake
sets automatically. This prevents unin­
tended rolling of the vehicle .
- Occasional noises when the parking
brake is set and released are normal and
are not a cause for concern.
- When the vehicle is parked, the parking
brake goes through a self -test cycle at
regular intervals. Any noises associated
with this are normal.
- If there is a power failure, the parking
brake will not set if it is released, and it
will not release if it is set ¢,&. . See your

authorized Audi dealer or qualified repair
facility.

Starting from a stop
The start assist function ensures that the
parking brake is released automatically upon starting.
Stopping and applying the parking brake

the parking brake.
Starting and automatically releasing the
parking brake
Requirement: The driver's door must be
locked and the driver's safety belt must be
fastened.
.. When you press the accelerator pedal , the
parking brake is automatically released and
your vehicle begins to move.

ulation while stationary , you must press the
brake pedal.
Switching adaptiv e cruise control off
.. Push the lever away from you into position

tance to the object ahead. No arrow appears

ISETI butto n when dr iv ing at speeds be­
low 20 mph (30 km/h) , the veh icle accel ­
erates au tomatically up to 20 mph
(30 km/h), which is the mi nimum speed
th at can be set.

- If you switch the ignit ion or the adaptive
cruise cont rol system off, the set speed
is e rased fo r safety reason.
- With the adaptive cruise control activat­
ed the ESC spo rt mod e cannot be activat­
ed.
- The e lectronic stab ilizat ion cont ro l (E SC)
and the anti-slip-regulat ion (ASR) are a u­
t oma tic a lly turned on w hen the adapt ive
c ruise cont ro l is turned on. Bot h sys tems
canno t be turned off if the a daptive
cruise cont rol is turned on .

Aud i d rive select makes it possibl e to expe ri­
e nce diffe ren t types of vehi cle sett ings in o ne
ve hicl e. The dr ive r can se lect from three
c om­
fort , auto and dynamic modes using the t.'i:.:1
button in the center conso le or the MM I to
switch between a sporty an d a comfortable
driving mode, for examp le. In the
individual *
mode, the sett ings can be ad justed to your
pe rsonal preferences. This makes it poss ib le
to comb ine settings such as a sporty eng ine
tuni ng with lig ht steer ing.

Description
Applies to vehicles: with Audi drive select
The vehicle setup in each mode depends on
the vehicle's features. However, t he engine
and steering are always affected .
Engine and automatic transmission*
Depe nding on t he mode, the e ng ine and au to­
mat ic tra nsm iss ion * respond more quickly or
in a more b alance d manner to acce lerator
pedal movements.
Adaptive dampers (Audi magnetic ride)*
The adaptive da mpers use senso rs to reco rd
i nfo rmat ion rega rding s teering moveme nts,
b rak ing and a cce le ra ti on operat ions by t he
d river, road s urface, driving speed, an d load.
W ith Aud i drive se lect yo u can adjust the
adaptive dampe rs sporty (dynamic), comfort­
ab le (comfort) or balanced (auto).
Steering
T he stee ring ad apts in te rms o f stee ring assis­
tance . There are different modes
~page 103 .
Indirect stee ring that moves eas ily as in com- f
ort mode is espec ially suited to long drives
o n a hig hway. The dynam ic mode provi des
spo rty, direct steering.
F o r vehicles wi th progressive stee ring * the
stee ring pe rformance is mo re agile.
Cornering light*
T he co rne ring light adjusts when driv ing on
c u rves a t speeds between 6 mph ( 10 km/h)
and 68 mph (1 10 km/h). The pivo ting act io n
and the light ing a re a lso adapted to the
mode.
Adaptive cruise control*
T he be hav ior when accelerating can be adjust­
ed from comfor tab le to spor ty, depend ing on
t h e Au di drive sele ct mo de. Ad aptive cr uise
control also responds to the driv ing behavior
of the vehicle ahead in a more co nservative or
spo rty manne r.

In some mo dels, the maxim um vehicle
speed can on ly be reache d in t he a uto and
d ynam ic modes.

Selecting the driving mode

You can choose between comfort, auto, dy­
namic and individual* .

You can change the driving mode when the ve­
hicle is stationary or while driving. If traffic
permits, after changing modes, briefly take
your foot off the acce lerator pedal so that the
recently selected mode is also activated for
the engine .
