IIJ ACC: engine speed
This message appears if the driver has not
shifted up or down in time when the adaptive
cruise control is braking or accelerating, caus­
ing the vehicle to exceed or to not reach the
permitted engine speed. The adaptive cruise
control turns
off. A chime sounds as a remind­
er .

Three white dots appear if a setting cannot be
selected with the operating lever. For exam­
ple, this happens if adaptive cruise control
cannot be activated when stopped because
the driver has not fastened the safety belt.
Door open
Adaptive cruise control cannot be switched on
when the vehicle is stationary and the driver's
door is open .

Applies to vehicles: with Audi pre se nse basic or Aud i pre
sense front
W ithin the limits of the system, pre sense ba­
sic and pre sense front can initiate steps to
protect vehicle occupants in certa in danger­
ous situations.
Critical driving situat ions can be recognized by
the pre sense front via a network of different
veh icle systems and can take steps to prepare
the vehicle occupants for a potentia l co llision.
The pre sense front wo rks with a radar sensor
and a video camera*.
It also functions within
the limits of the system when adaptive cruise
control* is switched off.

Audi pre sense basic
Description
Applies to vehicles : with Audi pre se nse basic
The function of the pre sense basic is activat­
ed at a speed of 20 mph (30 km/h) or higher.
The following functions can be triggered un­
der certain conditions within the limits of the
system:
- T ensioning of the safety be lts (for example,
during heavy braking) : The front safety belts
have reversible belt pretensioners. If a colli­
s ion does not occur, the safety belts loosen
slight ly and are ready to trigger again .
- Closing the windows (for example, if under­
or oversteering): The windows close until
there is only a small gap open.

Audi drive select: The dep loyment time is
adapted in dynamic mode.
A WARNING
The pre sense basic cannot overcome natu­ ral physical laws. It is a system designed to
assist and it cannot prevent a collis ion. Do
not let the increased safety provided
tempt you into taking risks. This could in­
crease your r isk of a collis ion.
- The system can deploy incorrectly due to
system-specific limits.
(D Tips
- Certa in pre sense bas ic functions switch
off when ESC is switched off (sport
mode) or when dr iving in reverse.
- The pre sense basic functions may not be
available if there is a ma lfunction in the
ESC system or the airbag control mod­
ule.
- Note that with pre sense bas ic, the rever­
sible safety belt pretensioner on the
front passenger's side deactivates when
t he fron t passenger's airbag is deactivat­
ed.
Audi pre sense front
Description
Applies to vehicles : wit h Audi pre sense front or Audi
adaptive crui se con trol
Pre sense front informs you if the distance to
the vehicle ahead falls below the safe distance
for an extended period of time. It can warn of
a possible collision and initiate braking ma­ neuvers, within the limits of the system.
When detected in time, the system can assess
dangerous situat ions where an object ahead
brakes suddenly or if your own veh icle is trav­
el ing at a high speed and approaching an ob ­
ject that is moving more slow ly . If detection is
not poss ible, then pre sense front does not re­
act.

Inter lock butt on
The interlock button in the selector lever han­
d le prevents you from moving the selector
lever inadvertently while in some se lecto r lev­
er positions. The positions that require the in ­
terlock button to be pressed are marked in
color in the illustration

Ignition k ey s afe ty inte rloc k*
You can only remove the key from the ignition
after switching the ignition off if the se lector
lever is in the P position. The selector lever
will be locked in the P position as long as the
key is not in the ign ition.

(D Tips
- If the se lector lever does not engage,
there is a malfunction. The engine is dis­
abled to prevent the vehicle from driving
off unintentionally. Press the brake pedal briefly to allow the selector lever lock to
engage aga in .
- If the vehicle does not move forward or
in reverse even though a drive position is
se lected, proceed as follows:
- >If the veh icle does not move in the de­
s ired direction, the system may not have
engaged the dr ive position co rrectly.
Press the brake pedal and select the
drive position again.
- >If the veh icle st ill does not move in the
desired direction, there is a system mal­
f u nct ion . See an a uthorized Aud i dea ler
or authorized Audi Service Facility for as ­
sistance to have the system checked.

The transmission shifts up and down auto­
matically when in the driving gears .

The eng ine will only be able start when these­
lector lever is in the P or N positions. At low
temperatures (below 14 °F ( -10 °C)), the en­
gine can only be started when the selector
lever is in the P pos it ion.

Under certain circumstances, (such as driving
in the mountains or towing a tra iler), it may
be usefu l to switch temporarily to the manual
shift p rogram in order to adjust the gears to
the dr iving condit ions by hand

When parking on a level surface, simply place
the selector leve r in the P pos ition. On in­
clines, activate the parking bra ke first and
then move the selector lever to the P posit ion
q page 82. This prevents the loc king mecha­
nism from being loaded too heavily and wi ll
~ make it easier to move the selector lever out

A WARNING
- The vehicle can roll even when the en­
gine is sw itched off.
- Unintended vehicle movement can lead
to serious injuries.
- Never leave your vehicle with the engine running while in gear. If you must leave
your veh icle when the engine is running,
set the parking brake and move these­
lector lever to the P position.
- Power is still transferred to the wheels
when the engine is running at idle . To
prevent the vehicle from "c reeping", you
must keep your foot on the brake when
the engine is running and the se lector
lever is in the D, Sor R position or "tip­
tronic" mode is selected .
- Do not inadvertently press the accelera ­
tor peda l when the vehicle is stationary.
Otherwise the vehicle wi ll start to move
immed iate ly, even if the parking brake is
set. Th is could resu lt in a crash.
- Do not press the accelerator pedal when
changing the selector lever position
while the vehicle is stationary and the engine is running.
- Never engage the R or P selector leve l
positions while dr iv ing. It could cause a
crash.
- Before driving down a steep slope, re­
duce your speed and shift into a lower
gear with "tiptronic". -
- Do not ride the brakes or press the brake
pedal too often or too long when driving
downhill . Constant braking causes the
brakes to overheat and substantially re­
duces braking pe rformance, increases
b ra ki ng distance or causes complete fa il­
ure of the brake system.
- I f you must stop on an in cl ine, always
hold the vehicle in place with the foot
bra ke or parking brake to p reven t it from
rolling back .
- Neve r hold the vehicle on an incline with
a slipping clutch . The clutch opens a uto -
matica lly when it becomes too hot from

to read and observe for your own safety, the
safety of your passengers and others . We have
summarized here what you need to know
about safety belts, a irbags, ch ild restra ints as
well as child safety. Your safety is for us
priori­
ty number 1.
Always observe the info rmat ion
and warn ings in th is sect ion -fo r yo ur own
safety as well as that of your passengers .
The information in this se ction app lies to all
model ve rsions of your veh icle . Some of the
feat ures described in this sec tions may be
standard equipment on some models, or may
be optional equipment on others . If you are
not sure, ask your authorized Audi dealer.
A WARNING
- Always make sure that you follow the in­
struct ions and heed the WARNINGS in
this Manual. It is in your interest and in
the inte rest of you r passengers.
- Always keep the complete Owner's Liter­
ature in your Audi when you lend or sell
yo ur vehicle so that this important info r­
mation will always be ava ilable to the
dr iver and passengers.
- Always keep the Owner's literature handy
so that you can find i t eas ily if you have

The safety features are part of the occupant
restraint system and work together to help
reduce the risk of injury in a wide variety of
accident situations.

tec hno logy have made a variety of features
ava ilable to help reduce the r is k of injury in an
a cciden t. T he following is a lis t of just a few of

What impairs driving safety?
Safe driving is directly related to the condi­
tion of the vehicle , the driver as well as the
driver's ability to concentrate on the road
without being distracted.
The driver is responsible for the safety of the
vehicle and all of its occupants. If your ability
to drive is impaired, safety r isks for everybody
in the vehicle increase and you a lso become a
hazard to everyone else on the road

.,. Do not let you rself be dist racted by passen­
gers or by us ing a cellular telephone .
.. NEVE R dr ive when yo ur dr iv ing ability is im­
paired (by medicat ions, alcohol, drugs, etc.).
.. Observe all traffic laws, ru les of the road
and speed limits and plain common sense.
.. ALWAYS adjust your speed to road, traffic
and weather conditions .
.. Take frequent breaks on long trips. Do not
drive for more than two hours at a stretch.
.. Do NOT drive when you are t ired, under
pressure or when you are stressed .

of serious personal injury and death when­

The proper driver seating position is impor­
tant for safe, relaxed driving .

For your own safety and to reduce the risk of
injury in the event of an accident, we recom­
mend that you adjust the driver's seat to the
follow ing position:
.. Adjust the driver's seat so that you can easi ­
ly push the pedals all the way to the floor
wh ile keeping your knee(s) slightly bent

.. Adjust the angle of the seatback so that it is
in an upr ight position so that your back
comes in full contact w ith it when you drive.
.. Adjust the steering wheel so that th ere is a

A WARNING
Drivers who are unbelted, out of position
or too close to the airbag can be seriously
injured by an airbag as it unfolds. To help
reduce the risk of serious personal injury:
- Always adjust the driver's seat and the steering wheel so that there are at least
10 inches (25 cm) between your breast­
bone and the steering wheel.
- Always adjust the driver's seat and the
steering wheel so that there are at least
4 inches (10 cm) between the knees and
the lower part of the instrument panel.
- Always hold the steering wheel on the
outside of the steering wheel rim with
your hands at the 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock
positions to help reduce the risk of per­
sonal injury if the driver's airbag inflates.
- Never hold the steering wheel at the
12 o'clock position or with your hands at
other positions inside the steering wheel
rim or on the steering wheel hub. Hold­
ing the steering wheel the wrong way
can cause serious injuries to the hands,
arms and head if the driver's airbag in­
flates.
- Pointing the steering wheel toward your face decreases the ability of the supple­
mental driver's airbag to protect you in a
collision .
- Always sit in an upright position and nev­
er lean against or place any part of your
body too close to the area where the air­
bags are located.
- Before driving, always adjust the front
seats properly and make sure that all
passengers are properly restrained. -
For adjustable head restraints: before
driving, always also adjust the head re­
straints properly.
- Never adjust the seats while the vehicle
is moving. Your seat may move unexpect­
edly and you could lose control of the ve­ hicle .
- Never drive with the backrest reclined or
tilted far back! The farther the backrests
are tilted back, the greater the risk of in­
jury due to incorrect positioning of the safety belt and improper seating posi­
tion .
- Children must always ride in child seats

Proper seating position for the front
passenger
The proper front passenger seating position
is important for safe, relaxed driving.
For your own safety and to reduce the risk of
injury in the event of an accident, we recom­
mend that you adjust the seat for the front
passenger to the following position:
• Adjust the angle of the seatback so that it is
in an upright position and your back comes
in full contact with it whenever the vehicle is
moving.

as possible with the top of your head. If that
is not possible, try to adjust the head re ­

The head restraints must be correctly adjust­
ed to achieve the best protection .

A WARNING
All seats are equipped with head re­
straints. Dr iving without head restraints or
with head restraints that are not properly
adjusted increases the risk of serious or fa­
t al neck injury dramat ically. To help reduce
the risk of injury:
- Always drive with the head restra ints in
place and properly adjusted.
- Every person in the veh icle must have a
properly adjusted head restra int.
- Always make sure each person in the ve­
hicle properly adjusts the ir head re­
straint. Adjust the head restraint so the
upper edge is as even as possible wit h
the top of your head.
If that is not possi­
ble, try to adjust the head restra int so that
it is as close to this posit ion as pos­
sible. Move the head restraint so that it
is as close to the back of the head as pos­
sible .
- Never attempt to adjust head restraint
while driving. If you have driven off and
must adjust the driver headrest for any reason, first stop the vehicle safely be­
fore attempting to adjust the head re­
straint .
- Ch ildren must always be prope rly re­
strained in a child restraint that is appro­
p ria te for their age and size

Examples of improper seating positions
The occupant restraint system con only re­
duce the risk of injury if vehicle occupants ore
properly seated .
Improper seating positions can cause serious
injury or death. Safety belts can only work
when they are properly positioned on the body . Improper seating positions reduce the
effect iveness of safety belts and wi ll even in­
crease the risk of injury and death by moving
the safety be lt to critica l areas of the body .
Imprope r seating positions a lso increase the
risk of serious injury and death when an air­
bag deploys and strikes an occupant who is
not in the proper seating position . A dr iver is
responsible for the safety of all veh icle occu­
pants and espec ially for children . T herefore :
.. Never allow anyone to assume an incorrect
seating position when the vehicle is being
used

The following bulletins list only some sample
pos itions that will increase the risk of serious
injury and death . Our hope is that these exam ­
ples will make you more aware of seat ing po­
s itions that are dangerous.
Therefore, whenever the vehicle is
moving:
- never stand up in the vehicle
- never stand on the seats
- never kneel on the seats
- never ride with the seatback reclined

Wearing safety belts correctly saves lives!
This chapter explains why safety be lts are nec ­
essary, how they work and how to adjust and
wear them correctly .

A WARNING
Not wearing safety belts or wearing them
improperly increases the risk of ser ious
personal in jury and death .
- Safety belts are the sing le most effective
means avai lab le to reduce the risk of se­
r ious injury and dea th in a utomob ile acci­
dents. For your protection and that of
yo ur passenge rs, always co rrectly wear
safety belts when the vehicle is moving.
- Pregnant women, injured, or physically
im paired perso ns m ust also use safety
belts. Lik e all veh icle occup ants, they are
more like ly to be ser iously injured if they
do not wea r safety be lts . The best way to
protect a fetus is to protect the mother -
throughout the entire pregnancy.
Number of seats
Your Audi has a total of four seating positions: two in the front and two in the rear. Each seat­
ing position has a safety belt .
A WARNING
Not wearing safety belts or weari ng them
improp erly increases th e risk of ser ious
pe rsonal i njury and deat h.
- Never st rap more than one pe rson, in­
cl uding small ch ild ren, into any belt.
It is
e speci ally dange rous to pla ce a safety
belt over a child s itting on yo ur lap.
- N ever le t mo re people ride in the ve hicl e
than there are s afe ty be lts avail able. -
