braking effect, which helps to protect the brakes
and tires and reduces the emissions and fuel con­
sumption to zero (fuel shut-off during decelera­
tion).
Shift efficiently
An effective way to save fuel is to upshift earlier.
Staying in a gear too long uses fuel unnecessari­
ly .
Press down on the accelerator pedal slowly and
avoid "kick-down".
Avoid full acceleration
You should rarely travel at the maximum vehicle
speed. High speeds cause a disproportionately
high increase in fuel consumption, emissions and
traffic noise. Slower driving saves fuel.
Reduce idling time
The Start/Stop system* helps to reduce the idling
time automatically. In vehicles without the Start/
Stop system, it is efficient to switch the engine
off when stopped
at railroad crossings and long
red lights. Depending on the version of the en­
gine, stopping the engine for as little as five sec­
onds once it has reached operating temperature
still saves more fuel than leaving the engine run­ ning
-even when taking into account the amount
of extra fuel that is used to restart the engine.
It takes a very long time in idle to warm the en­
gine up to operating temperature. Wear and
emissions are especially high in the warm-up
phase. Therefore, you should begin driving im­
mediately after starting the engine. Avoid high
RPMs while doing this.
Have maintenance performed regularly
By having maintenance performed regularly on
your vehicle, you can help to reduce fuel con­
sumption before you even start to drive. The maintenance condition of your vehicle not only
affects traffic safety and long-term value but al­
so impacts
fuel consumption. A poorly main­
tained engine can lead to fuel consumption that
is 10% higher than normal.
Driving
Avoid short trips
The engine and emissions control system must
reach their optimal
operating temperature to ef­
fectively reduce consumption and emissions.
A cold engine uses a disproportionately high
amount of fuel. The engine reaches operating
temperature and consumption normalizes only
after approximately 2.5 miles (4 km).
Check the tire pressure
To save fuel, make sure the tires are always in­
flated to the correct pressure
r=;, page 33 5. The
fuel consumption can increase by S% if the pres­
sure is only 0.5 bar too low. Due to the increased
rolling resistance, low tire pressures will also
lead to greater tire
wear and will affect driving
behavior.
Do not drive on
winter tires year-round, as this
will consume up to 10% more fuel.
Eliminate unnecessary weight
Since every kilogram of extra weight increases
fuel consumption, a quick inspection of the lug­
gage compartment may be worth it to avoid un­
necessary weight.
When not being used, a roof rack should be re­
moved to decrease the wind resistance of the ve­
hicle. You will save approximately 12% of your
fuel when at speeds from 62-75 mph
(100-120 km/h).
Save energy
The engine drives the generator, which generates
electricity; the fuel consumption also increases
with the demand for electricity. Therefore, switch
electrical equipment off when you no longer
need it. Examples of equipment that uses a lot of
energy are air blowers at a high setting, the rear
window defogger and seat heating*.

- Do not leave engine idling unattended after
starting. If warning lights should come on
to indicate improper operation, they would go unheeded. Extended idling also produces
heat, which could result in overheating or

General information
~check your tires regularly for
damage (punctures, cuts, cracks
and bulges). Remove foreign ob­
jects from the tire tread.
~ If driving over curbs or similar
obstacles, drive slowly and ap ­
proach the curb at an angle.
~ Have faulty tires or rims re­
placed immediately.
~ Protect your tires from oil,
grease and fuel.
~ Mark tires before removing
them so that the same running direction can be maintained if
they are reinstalled .
~ Lay tires flat when storing and
store them in a cool, dry location
with as little exposure to light as possible.

winter tires are designed for

mends using winter tires dur­

temperatures significantly de­ crease the elasticity of summ­
er tires, which affects traction

temperatures, cracks can form on the tread bars, resulting in
permanent tire damage that
can cause loud driving noise
and unbalanced tires.

New tires or wheels
Aud i recommends having all work on tires or
wheels performed by an authorized Audi dealer
or author ized Audi Se rvice Facility . These fac ili­
ties have the proper know ledge and are equipped
with the required too ls and replacement parts.
• New tires do not yet have the optimum grip­
ping properties. Drive caref ully and at moder ­
ate speeds for the first 350 mi les (500 km)
with new tires.
• Only use tires w it h the same design, size (roll­
i ng c ircumference) and as close to the same
tread patter n as poss ible on all four wheels .
• Do not replace t ires individua lly. At least re­
pla ce both t ires on the same axle at the same
t ime .
• Audi recommends that you use Aud i Original
Tires . If you wou ld like to use different tires,
please note that the tires may perform differ­
ently even if they are the same

e nough clearance to the veh icle. Rep lace­
ment tires should not be chosen s imply
based on the nomina l size, because ti res
wit h a differe nt constru ction can diffe r
g reatly even if they are the same size . If
there is no t enough clearance, the tires or
the vehicle can be damage d and this can re­
duce dr iving safety and increase the risk of
an accident.
-On ly use t ires that are more than s ix years
old when absolutely necessa ry and drive
carefully when doing so.
- Do not use run -flat tires on your vehicle . Us­
ing them when not perm itted can lead to
veh icle damage or accidents.
- If you install wheel covers on the vehicle, make sure they allow enough air circulation
to cool the brake system. If they do not, t his
could increase the risk of an acc ident.

crease tire wear considerab ly.
-Driving quickly through curves, rap id accelera­
tion and heavy b raking increase tire wear .
-Have an authorized A udi dealer or au thorized
Audi Se rvice Facility check the wheel alignment
if there is unusual wear.
-Have the whee ls rebalanced i f an imbalance is
causing noticeab le vib ration in the steering
whee l. If you do not, the tires and other veh icle
components could wear more quickly.
Treadwear indicator
O rigina l equ ipment t ires conta in treadwe ar indi­
cators in the tread pattern, which are b ars that
are 1/16 in. (1.6 mm) h igh and are spaced evenly
aro und the tire perpendic ular to the runn ing d i­
rection¢ fig. 279. The letters "TWI" or triangles
on the tire sidewall indicate the locat ion of the
treadwear indicators.
The tires have reached the mi nimum tread
dept h
ll when they have worn down to the tread­
wear ind icators. Replace the tires with new ones

Tire rotation
Rotating t he tires regular ly is recommended to
ensure the tires wear even ly. To rotate the tires,
install the tires from the rear ax le on the front
axle and v ice versa. This will allow the tires to
have approx imately the same length of service
life.
For unidirectional tires, make sure the tires are
installed according to the running direction indi­
cated on the tire
sidewall¢ page 361 .
Hidden damage
Damage to tires and r ims can often occur i n loca­
tions that are hidden . Unus ua l vibrations in the
veh icle or pulling to one s ide may indicate that
there is tire damage. Reduce your speed immedi­
ately. Check the t ires for damage .
If no damage
is visible from the outside, drive s lowly and care­
fully to the nearest authorized Aud i dealer or au-

A WARNING
Tread that has worn too low or different tread depths on the tires can reduce driving safety.
This can increase the risk of an accident be­
cause it has a negative effect on handling,
d riving through curves, and b raking, and be­
cause it increases the r isk of hydroplaning
when dr iving th rough dee p puddles.

ter blinks for approximately one minute and then
stays on, there is system malfunction. Check/cor­ rect the pressures on all four tires and store the
pressures

turn off or turns on again after a short period of
time, drive to an authorized Audi dealer or au­
thorized Audi Service Facility immediately to have
the malfunction corrected.
A WARNING
- If the tire pressure indicator appears in the
instrument cluster display, reduce your
speed immediately and avoid any hard
steering or braking maneuvers. Stop as soon
as possible and check the tires and their
pressures.
- The driver is responsible for maintaining the correct tire pressures. You must check the
tire pressures regularly.
- Under certain conditions (such as a sporty
driving style, winter conditions or unpaved
roads), the pressure monitor indicator may
be delayed.
- Do not use run-flat tires on your vehicle. Us­
ing them when not permitted can lead to
vehicle damage or accidents.
@ Tips
- The tire pressure monitoring system can al­
so stop working when there is an ESC/ABS
malfunction.
- Using snow chains may result in a system
malfunction.
- The tire pressure monitoring system in your
Audi was calibrated with "Audi Original
Tires"
¢ page 335. Using these tires is rec­
ommended .
- The tire pressure monitoring system can on­
ly monitor the tire pressure of the driving
tires. Check the tire pressure of the spare
wheel in the luggage compartment so that
if necessary it is ready for use.

Emergency assistance
Trunk escape latch
Applies to: vehicles with trunk escape latch (Sedan and Cab­
rio let)
In case of an emergency, the rear lid can be
opened from th e inside using th e trunk escape
latch.

The trunk escape latch is to be used only in an

General information
• Park the vehicle as far as possible from moving
traff ic in the event of a breakdown . In the event
of a flat tire, park the vehicle on a leve l surface .
It you are on a steep h ill, be especially careful.
• Set the parking b rake .
• Place the sele ctor lever in the P pos ition.
• Switch the emergency flashers on .
• Put on a reflective vest, if available.
•Setup th e warn ing triang le, if available.
• Have the passengers exit the vehicle . They
shou ld move to a safe place, for example be­
hind a guard rail.
A WARNING
Pay attent ion to the steps above . They a re for
your protection and the for the safety of other drivers.

9. In the ve hicle that is being jump started,
switch the heater fan and rear window de ­
froster on to reduce any voltage peaks that
may occur when disconnecting the jumper
cables. The headlights must be switched off.
10. With the engines running, remove the cables
i n
reverse order of the way they were instal­
l ed. Make sure the cables do not get caught
in mov ing engine components.
11. Sw itch the heater fan and rear w indow de-
froster off.
12. C lose the battery cover .
The battery is vented to the outside so that gases
do not enter the passenger compartment. Make
sure that the connected positive termina l clamps
on the jump start cab le have sufficient contact
with metal.
A WARNING
Follow the warnings and instructions from
the jump start cab le manufacturer to reduce
the risk of ser ious injuries and vehicle dam­
age. If you are unsure about anything, call
roads ide ass istance.
- The jump start cables must be long enough
so that the veh icles do not touch.
-
- Route the jump start cables so they cannot
get caught in the moving parts in the engine
compartment.
- Always read and follow the warnings before check ing anything in the engine compart­
ment

Connecting jump start cables incorrectly can
damage the alternator .
- Always connect the positive terminal(+) to
the positive term inal(+) and the negative
term inal(-) to the negat ive terminal(-) on
the body ground po int, but not the negative
terminal on the battery.
- Make su re the screw plugs on the battery
cells are installed securely. If not, tighten
the plugs before connecting the clamps to
the negat ive termina l on the b attery.
- Please note t hat the connecting p rocess de­
scribed below for the jump sta rt cab les is
in-
370 tended for when your vehicle is being jump
started. If you are jump starting another ve­
hicle, do not connect the negat ive cab le to
the negative term inal (-) on the dra ined
battery, but rather connect it to a large
metal component that is bolted secure ly to
the engine block, or to the engine block it­
self.
If the battery in the vehicle being jump
sta rted is not vented to the outside, there is
a risk of explosion due to hyd rogen gas.
- Make sure that the connected pos itive ter­
minal clamps have suff icient contact with
metal.
- Do not use the battery negative terminal fo r
jump starting or a ma lfunction co uld occ ur
in the vehicle electrical system.
Towing with a tow truck
General tips
Your Audi requires special handling for towing.
The following information is to be used by com­ mercia l tow truck operators who know how to op ­
erate their equipment safely.
-Never tow your Audi. Towing will cau se dam­
age to the engine and t ran smi ssi on.
- Nev er wrap the safet y ch ains or winch cables
aroun d the br ake lines .
- To pr event unne ce ssa ry damag e, your Audi
must be tran sported with a flat be d tru ck .
- To load th e vehicle on to the flat bed , use th e
towing l oop found in the vehicl e tool s and at ­
t a ch to the front or rear an chorage

A WARNING
A veh icle being towed is not safe for passen­
gers. Never allow anyone to ride in a vehicle
being towed, fo r any reason.
