-Due to t he interlinking o f various vehicle sys­
tems, critica l driving situations can be detected
by
pre sense ba sic and meas ures for preventa ­
t ive occ upant protection are can be initiated.
- The
pre sense front uses the data from the ra ­
dar sensors and calc ulates the probab ility of an
acc ident
c::> page 124. An impending collision
with vehicles ca n be detected within the limits
of the system . In this case, the system warns
the driver v isually, acoustically and with a je rk
on the brakes if necessary. If needed, it ca n ini ­
tiate a part ia l o r full dece le ra tion to reduce the
co llision speed o r to avo id t he coll is io n unde r
ce rtain c ircumstances. In conjunc tion wi th pre
sense basic, the front safety belts are a lso re ­
versib ly tensioned w hen needed . The pre sense
front is a lso active when adaptive cruise con­
trol* is sw itched off.

- Certain pre sense f unctions switch off when
d riving in reverse.
- The pre sense functions may not be avai la­
b le if there is a ma lfunction in the ESC sys­
tem or the airbag contro l modu le.
- Note t hat the revers ible belt tensioner on
t h e front passe nger's side deactivates w hen
the front passe nger's a irbag is deact ivated .
- Switch the pre sense off when you are not
us ing public streets or whe n loadi ng the ve­
h icle onto a veh icle carrier, train, ship or
othe r type of t ransportation . T his can pre­
vent a n un des ired intervent ion from the pre
sense sys te m .

- Tensioning o f the safety belts (for examp le,
during heavy braking) : the front safety belts

- Initiat ing the clos ing of the w indows and the
panorama g lass roof* (for examp le when un­
der- or oversteering).
Audi drive select*: the trigger times are adjusted depending on the mode selected .

gers are not speaking when you are giving a voice
command.
Do not direct the vents toward the hands -free mi ­
crophone, which is in the roof headliner near the
front interior lights.

Opening the radio
The radio supports the FM, AM and SiriusXM*
(satellite radio) bonds. Using the HO Radio re­
ceiver also allows you to receive radio stations
on the FM and AM bonds in digital format.

Storing cargo correctly
Loading the luggage compartment
All luggage and other objects must be properly
stowed and secured in the luggage compart ­
ment.

Loose items in the luggage compartment can
shift suddenly, chang ing vehicle handling charac­
ter istics . Loose items can also increase the risk of
serio us personal inj ury in a sudden vehicle ma­
ne uver or in a coll ision.
• Distribute the load evenly in the luggage com­
partment.
• Always place and properly secure heavy items in
the luggage compartment as far forward as
poss ible.
• Secure luggage using the tie-downs provided
¢ page 63.
• Make sure that the rear seatback is securely
latched in place .
A WARNING
Improperly stored luggage or other items can
fly through the vehicle causing serio us per­
sonal injury in the event of hard braking or an
accident . To help reduce the risk of serious
personal injury:
- Always put objects, fo r example, luggage o r
other heavy items in the luggage compart­ ment.
- Always sec ure objects in the luggage com­
partment using the tie-down hooks and
s u itable straps .
Driving safety
A WARNING
Heavy loads will influence the way your vehi­
cle handles. To help reduce the risk of a loss
of control lead ing to serious personal injury:
- Always keep in m ind when transport ing
heavy objects, that a change in the center of
gravity can a lso cause changes in vehicle
handling :
- Always distribute the load as evenly as
possible .
- Place heavy objects as far forward in the luggage compartment as possible.
- Never exceed the Gross Ax le Weight Rating
or the G ross Vehicle Weight Rating specified
on the safety compliance sticker on the left
door jamb. Exceeding permissible we ight
standards can cause the vehicle to slide and handle differently.
- Please observe information on safe driving
¢page 249 .
A WARNING
-
To help prevent poisonous exhaust gas from
being drawn into the vehicle, always keep the
rear lid closed while driving.
- Never transport objects larger than those
fitting completely into the luggage area be ­
cause the rear lid cannot be fu lly closed.
- If you absolutely must dr ive with the rear lid
open, observe the following notes to reduce
the risk of poisoning:
- Close all windows,
- Close the power roof*,
- Close the power top*,
- Open alt a ir outlets i n the instrument pan-
el,
- Switch off the air rec irculat ion ,
- Set the fresh air fan to the highest speed.
A WARNING

Always make sure that the doors , all win­
dows, the power roof*, the power top* and
the rear lid are securely closed and locked to
r educe the risk of injury when the vehicle is
n ot being used.

Airbag syste m
Always remember, a child seat or infant carrier
installed on the front seat may be struck and
knocked out of position by the rapidly inflating
passenger's airbag in a frontal collision. The air­
bag could greatly reduce the effectiveness of the
child restraint and even seriously injure the ch ild
during inflation .
For this reason, and because the back seat is the
safest place for children
-when properly restra in­
ed according to the ir age and size
-we strongly
recommend that children always sit in the back
seat ¢ page 294, Child safety.
.8, WARNING
A child in a rearward-facing chi ld seat insta l­
led on the front passenger seat will be ser i­
ously injured and can be killed if the front air­
bag inflates
-even with an Advanced Airbag
System.
- The inflating a irbag w ill hit the child seat or
infant carrier with great force and will
smash the chi ld seat and child against the
backrest, center armrest, door or roof.
- Always install rear-facing child
seats on the
rear seat.
- If you must install a rearward facing chi ld
seat on the front passenger seat because of
exceptional c ircumstances and the
PASSEN­
GER AIR BAG OFF
light does not come on
and stay on, immediately insta ll the rear­
facing child seat in a rear seating position
and have the airbag system inspected by
yo ur Audi dealer.
- Forward-facing ch ild seats insta lled on the
front passenge r's seat may interfe re with
the deployment of the airbag and cause se­
rious persona l injury to the child.

If, in except ional circumst ances, you must in­
stall a forward-facing chi ld restraint on the
front passenger's seat:
- Always make sure the forward-facing se at
has been designed and ce rt ified by its man ­
ufact urer for use on a front seat with a pas­
senger front and side a irbag .

el.

the highest posit ion in the up and down ad­
justment range and move it back to the

To reduce the risk of serious injury, ma ke sure
that the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light will
be d isp layed whenever a ch ild rest raint is in­
stalled on the front passenge r seat and the
ignition is switched on.
- If the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light does
not stay on, perform the checks described
¢ page 281 , Monitoring the Advanced Air­
bag System.
- Take the child restra int off the front passen­
ge r seat and install it properly at one of the
rear sea t positions if the
PASSENGER AIR
BAG OFF
light does not stay on.
- Have the ai rbag system inspec ted by your
Aud i dea le r i mmediately.
- Always carefully follow ins tructions from
child restraint manufacture rs when instal­
ling child restra ints .
.8, WARNING
I f, in exceptional ci rcumstances, you must in­
stall a forward or rearward-fa cing child re­
str aint on the fron t passenger's seat:
- Improper installat ion of child res traints can
redu ce the ir effectiveness or even preven t
them from provid ing any pro te ct ion .

-If you are unrestrained, leaning forward, sit­
t ing s ideways or out of pos ition in any way,
your risk of injury is much h igher.
- You will also receive serious injuries and
could even be killed if you are up aga inst the
airbag or too close to it when it inflates -
even with an Advanced
Airbag ¢ page 269.
A WARNING
A child in a rearward -facing child seat instal­
led on the front passenger seat will be ser i­
ously inju red and can be killed if the front air­
bag inflates - even with an Advanced Airbag
System.
- Although the Advanced A irbag System in
yo ur vehicle is designed to tu rn off the front
airbag when a rearward-facing child re­
straint has been insta lled on the front pas ­
senger seat, nobody can absolutely g uaran­
tee that deployment is impossible in all con­ ceivable s ituations that may happen during
the useful life of your vehicle.
- The inflating airbag will hit the child seat or infant carrier w ith great force and will
smash the ch ild seat and child against the
backrest, center armrest, door, or roof .
- Always install rearward-facing ch ild re­
straints on the rear seat .
- If you must install a rearward fac ing ch ild
seat on the front passenger seat because of
exceptional c ircumstances and the

light does not come on

li ght comes on and stays on all the time
whenever the ignition is switched on .
Advanced Airbag System components
The front passenger seat in your vehicle has a lot
of very important parts of the Advanced Airbag
System in it. These pa rts include the capacitive
passenger detection system, wir ing, brackets,
and more . T he control unit monitors the system
o n the front passenger seat when the ignit ion is
switched on a nd turns the airbag indicato r light
o n when a malfunction in the one of the system
components is
detected ¢ page 281. Because
t h e fron t passenger sea t contains impo rtan t
parts of the Advanced Ai rbag System , you must
take care to prevent it from being damaged .
Damage to the seat may prevent the Advanced

led o n the front passenger seat will be ser i­
ously injured and can be k ille d if the front air­
bag in flate s - even with an Advanced Airbag
System.

Objects between you and the a irbag w ill in­
crease the risk of in jury in a crash by interfer­
ing w ith the way the airbag unfolds or by be­
ing pushed into you as the a irbag inflates.
- Never hold th ings in your hands or on your
lap when the vehicle is in use .
- Never transport items on or in the area of
the fron t passenger seat . Objects could
move into the area of the front airbags du r­
ing bra king or other sudden maneuve rs and
become dangerous projec tiles that c an
ca use serious pe rsonal injury if the a irbags
inflate.
- Never pl ace or attach accessor ies or o ther
objects (such as cup ho lders, te lephone
brackets, large, heavy or bulky objects) on
the doors, over or nea r the area marked
"AIRBAG" on the steering wheel, instru­
ment pane l, seat backrests or between
those areas and yourself. These objects could cause injury in a crash, especially
when the airbags infla te.
- Never recline the front passenger's seat to
transport objects . Items can also move into
the a rea of the side airbag o r the front a ir-

bag du ring brak ing o r in a sudden maneu­
ver. Objects near the airbags can become pro jecti les and cause injury, part icularly
when the seat is reclined .
- Never p lace or transport objects on the
front passenger seat. Objects on the front passenger seat could cause the capacitive
sensor in the seat to signal to ai rbag system
that the seat is occ upied by a person when it
in fact is no t, or that the pe rson on the seat
is he avie r th an he or she act ually is. The
change in electric capacitan ce beca use of
such objects can cause the passenge r front
airbag to be turne d on when it should be
off, or can cause the airbag to work in a way
that is different from the way it would have
wo rked without objects on the seat.
- Always make sure that there is noth ing on
the front passenger seat that will cause the
capacitive passenger detection system in
the sea t to signal to the Airbag System that
the seat is occup ied by a person when it is
not, or to signal that it is occupied by some­
one who is heavier th an the person actu ally
si tting on the sea t. The presence of an o b­
ject could ca use the passenger front air bag
to be turned on when it should be off, or
could cause the airbag to work in a way that is diffe rent from the way it would have
worked without the object on the seat.
A WARNING
The fine dust created when airbags deploy can
cause breathing prob lems for people with a
h istory of asthma or othe r breath ing cond i­
tions .
- To reduce the r isk of breathing p roblems ,
those wi th asthma o r other respiratory con­
ditions sho uld get fresh a ir rig ht away by
getting out of the vehi cle or opening win­
dows or doors.
- If you are in a co llision in which airbags de­
ploy, w ash yo ur hands and f ace with m ild
soap and water be fore eating.
- Be ca refu l not to get the dust into your eyes,
or into any cuts or scratches.
- If the residue sho uld get into your eyes,
flush them w ith wate r.

Airbag system
-Damage to the original seat covers or to
the seam in the area of the side airbag module must always be repaired immedi­
ately by an authorized Audi dealer .
- Objects between you and the airbag can in­
crease the risk of injury in an accident by in­
terfering with the way the airbag unfolds or by being pushed into you as the a irbag in­
flates.
- Never place or attach accessories or other
objects (such as cup holders, telephone
brackets, or even large, bulky objects) on
the doors, over or near the area marked
"AIRBAG" on the seat backrests .
- Such objects and accessories can become
dangerous projectiles and cause injury
when the supplemental s ide airbag de­
ploys.
- Never carry any objects or pets in the de­
ployment space between them and the
airbags or allow chi ldren or other passen­
gers to travel in this posit ion.
- Always use the built-in coat hooks only for
lightweight clothing . Never leave any heavy
or sharp-edged objects in the pockets that
may interfere with side airbag deployment
and can cause personal injury in an accident .
- Always prevent the side airbags from being
damaged by heavy objects knocking against
or hitting the sides of the seatbacks.
- T he airbag system can only be triggered
once .
If the airbag has been triggered, the
system must be replaced by an authorized
Audi dealership.
- Damage (cracks, deep scratches etc.) to the
original seat covers or to the seam in the
area of the side airbag modu le must always
be repaired immediately by an authorized
Audi dealer.
-If children are seated improper ly, their risk
of injury increases in the case of an acc ident
¢ page 2 94, Child safety.
-Never attempt to modify any components of
the a irbag system in any way.
-In a side collision, side airbags w ill not func­
t ion properly if sensors cannot correctly
measure increasing air pressure inside the

doors when air escapes through larger, un­
closed openings in the door panel.
- Never drive with inte rior door trim panels
r emoved.
- Never dr ive when parts have been re­
moved from the inside door panel and the
openings they leave have not been proper­
l y closed.
- Never drive when loudspeakers in the
doors have been removed unless the
speaker holes have been properly closed.
- Always make certain that openings are
cove red or filled if additional speakers or
other equipment is installed in the inside
door panels .
- Always have work on the doors done by an
authorized Aud i dealer or qualified work­
shop .
Side curtain airbags
Description of side curtain airbags
Applies to: vehicles with side curtain airbags
The side curtain airbag sys tem can provide sup­
plemental protection to properly restrained oc­
cupants .

The side curtain airbags are located on both sides
of the inter ior above the front and rear side win­
dows ¢
fig. 245. They are identified by the word
"A IRBAG" on the windshie ld frame and the cen­
ter roof pillar.
The side curtain airbags contain features that
provide ejection mitigation to help prevent vehi-
cle occupants or parts of their bodies from being completely or partia lly ejected from the vehicle

-The child and the passenger can also in­
jure each other in an accident .
- Never install rear-facing chi ld safety seats
or infant carriers on the front passenger
seat. A child will be serious ly injured and
can be killed when the passenger airbag in­
flates - even with an Advanced Airbag Sys­
tem .
- The inflating a irbag will hit the child safety
seat or infant carrier with great force and
will smash the ch ild safety seat and chi ld
against the backrest, center armrest, door
o r roof.
- Always install rear-facing child safety seats
o r infant carriers on the rear seat.
- Make sure there is enough space in front of
the ch ild in the child seat.
If necessary, ad­
just the angle and posit ion of the seat in
front of the child sea t.
- Forward-fac ing ch ild safety sea ts installed
on the front passenger's seat can inte rfe re
with the airb ag when i t inflates and cause
serious injury to the child . Always insta ll for ­
ward-facing child safety seats on the rear
seat.
- If exceptional circumstances require the use
of a forward- facing child restraint on the
front passenge r's seat, the child's safety
and well-being require that the following
special precautions be taken:
- Make sure the forward-fa cing seat h as
been designed an d certif ied by its manu­
facturer for use on a front seat with a pas ­
senger front and side airbag.
- Always care fully follow the manufacturer's
instr uctions provided with the child safety
seat o r ca rr ier.
- Always move the front passenger seat to the highest posit ion in the up and down
ad justment range and move it back to the
rearmost posit ion in the seat's fore and
aft adjustment range, as far away from
the airbag as possible, before installing
the forward-fac ing ch ild restraint .

- Always make sure that nothing p revents
the front passenger's seat from being moved to the rearmost position in its fore
and aft adjustment range.
- Always make sure that the backrest is in the upright posit ion.
- Never place or use any elect rical device
(such as a laptop, CD player, electronic
games device, power inverter or seat heat­
er for child seats) on the front passenger
seat if the device is connec ted to the 12-
vo lt socket or the cigarette lighter soc ket .
- If a seat heate r has been retrofitted or
othe rw ise added to the front passenger
seat, neve r insta ll any child restraint sys­
tem on this seat.
- Make su re that there a re no wet objects
(such as a wet towe l) and no water or oth­
er liquids on the front passenger sea t
cush ion .
- Never pla ce obje cts on the sea t (such as a
laptop, CD player, ele ct ronic games de­
vice, power inverter o r seat heater for
child seats). These may influence the elec­
trical capacitance measu red by the capac i­
tive passenger detection system and can
also fly around in an acc ident and cause
serious personal injury .
- Always buckle the child safety seat firm ly in
p lace even if a ch ild is not sitt ing in it. A
loose child safety seat can fly around dur ing
a sudden stop or in a co llision .
- Always read and heed all WARNINGS when­
ever us ing a child restrained in a vehicle is
be ing

The airbag on the passenger side makes the front
seat a potentially dangerous place for a child to ride. The front seat is not the safest place for a
child in a forward-facing child seat. It is a very
dangerous place for an infant or a larger child in
a rearward-facing seat.
A WARNING
Not using a child safety seat, using the wrong
child safety seat or improperly installing a
child restraint increases the risk of serious
personal injury and death in a crash.
- Never install rear -facing child safety seats
or infant carriers on the front passenger
seat - even with an Advanced Airbag System.
A child will be seriously injured and can be
killed when the inflating airbag hits the
child safety seat or infant carrier with great
force and smashes the child safety seat and child against the backrest, center armrest,
door or roof

-Always install rear-facing child safety seats
or infant carriers on the rear seat.
- Never install a rear-facing child restraint in the forward-facing direction. Such restraints are designed for the special needs of infants
and very small children and cannot protect
them properly if the seat is forward-facing .
- If you must install a rearward facing child safety seat on the front passenger seat be­
cause of exceptional circumstances and the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light does not
come on and stay on, immediately install
the rear-facing child safety seat in a rear
seating position and have the airbag system
inspected by your Audi dealer.
- Never place or use any electrical device (such as a laptop, CD player, electronic
games device, power inverter or seat heater
for child seats) on the front passenger seat
if the device is connected to the 12-volt
socket or the cigarette lighter socket.

-If a seat heater has been retrofitted or oth­
erwise added to the front passenger seat, never install any child restraint system on
