If not hing is hung on the hooks, they wi ll fold
back in by themselves .
I n a coll is ion, the laws of phys ics mean that
even smaller items that are loose in the vehi­
cle will turn into heavy missiles that can ca use
serio us injury . Items in the vehicle p ick up ki­
netic energy which varies w ith the vehicle and
the we ight of the item . Veh icle speed is the
most significant factor .
F or example, in a frontal collisio n at a speed
of 30 mph (48 km/h), the forces acting on a 10- lb (5 kg) object a re about
20 times the
normal weight of the item . Th is means that
the we ight of the item would suddenly be the
equ ivalent of about 200 lbs (90 kg). O ne can
eas ily imagine the injuries that an item of that
weight flying free ly through the passenger
compartmen t can ca us e in a co llision a t a
speed considered relat ively low .

Weak, damage d or improper straps used
to secure items to tie -downs can fail du r­
ing hard b rak ing or in a col lision and cause
serious personal in jury.
- Always use suitab le retaining straps and
properly secure items to the tie-downs in
t h e luggage compartment to help pre ­
vent items from shifting or flying for­
wa rd .
- Never attac h a child seat tether strap to
a tie -down.
- For st rength-related reasons, the mount­
ing hooks can only be used to secure ob­
jects weighing up to 10 lb . (5 kg) . Heav i­
er objec ts w ill not be a dequately secured

A WARNING
-The ski sack is intended only for the
transportation of skis and other light ob­
jects. To reduce the risk of serious per­
sonal i njury, never transport heavy or
pointed objects in the ski sack. -
When braking rapid ly or during an acci­
dent, the load could be displaced and
cause injury to occupants.
- Sharp edges on the load must be covered
for protection. A lways fasten the belt
tightly around the sack and its contents

-For safety reasons, do not transport
more tha n two pairs of skis in t he ski
sack.
- You must secure the ski sack with the
strap after load ing.
- Make sure all objects that you are trans­
port ing in the pass-through are secured.

- Never stow the ski sack away when it is
st ill wet o r damp (for example, snow

- Pos ition skis in the sk i sack with the
pointed ends facing the front and ski
poles with the pointed ends facing the
re ar.
- Sedan: Y ou can lo ck or unloc k the pass­
t hrough using the mechan ica l key. This
prevents any access to the l uggage com­
partment from the vehicle interior .

Reversible cargo area floor (dirt
collector)

Please make sure that the heat ing wires
for the rear window defogger are not dam­
age by abrasive objects .

Operation
We recommend pressing the IAUTO I button and setting the temperature to 72 °F (22 °C).

Press the buttons to turn the functions on or
off. Use the d ials to adjust the temperature,
the blower speed and the a ir distribution. The
L ED in a button will light up when the func­
tion is switched on. The settings are displayed
for a few seconds in the radio or MMI* display.
In vehicles with a 3-zone deluxe automat ic cl i­
mate control systems *, the dr iver and front
passenger side can be adjusted separately.
The settings are also d isplayed in the climate
con trol system display.
IOFFI Switching the climate control
system on/off
The IOF FI button switches the climate control
sys tem on or off.
It also switches on when you press the knob. Airflow from outs
ide is
blocked when the climate control system is
switched off.
IACI Switching cooling mode on/off
The air is not coo led and humidity is not re­
moved when cooling mode is switched off.
This can cause fog on the w indows. Cooling
mode switches off automatically when the
outside temperature is be low zero.
1- 1 Switching recirculation mode on/off
In recircu lation mode, the air inside the vehi ­
cle is circulated and filtered. This prevents the
unfiltered air outside the vehicle from enter­
ing the vehicle interior. We recommend

Stopping the engine

Steering lock
The steering locks when you remove the igni­
tion key. The locked steering helps prevent
ve­
hicle theft.
Emergency off
If it is necessary in unusual circumstances, the
engine can be switched off while the vehicle is
moving. The engine will be switched off if you
press on the key for an extended period.
A WARNING ~
- Never turn off the engine before the ve­
hicle has come to a complete stop. The
full function of the brake booster and the power steering is not guaranteed. You
must use more force to turn or brake if
necessary. Because you cannot steer and
brake as you usually would, this could lead to crashes and serious injuries.
- For safety reasons, you should always
park your vehicle with the selector lever
in P. Otherwise, the vehicle could inad­
vertently roll away.
- The radiator fan can continue to run for
up to 10 minutes
even after you have
turned off the engine and removed the
ignition key. The radiator fan can also
turn on again if the engine coolant heats
up because of intense sunlight or heat
build-up in the engine compartment.
- Always take the key with you whenever
you leave your vehicle. Otherwise, the
engine could be started or electrical
equipment such as the power windows
could be operated. This can lead to seri­
ous injury.
- Never leave children or persons requiring
assistance unattended in the vehicle . The
doors can be locked using the remote
transmitter, preventing people from es­ caping from the vehicle on their own in
the event of an emergency. Depending
on the time of year, people inside the
ve­
hicle can be exposed to very high or very
low temperatures .

St eering lock
The steering locks when you t urn the engine
off us ing the I STAR T ENGINE STOP I button
and open the dr iver's door. The locked stee r­
i ng helps p reven t vehicle theft.
Emergency off
If necessary, the eng ine ca n be sw itched off
with the selector leve r in the R or D/S pos i­
tions. To do so, step on the brake pedal and
p ress and hold the
I START ENGINE STOP I but­
ton vehicle speed must be less th an 6 mph
(10 km/h).

sounds if you open the d river's door when the
ignition is sw itched on.
No key id entified
This message appears when the
I S TART ENGI NE STOPI button is pressed if
there is no master key ins ide the veh icle or if
the system does not recognize it . Fo r exam­
ple, the master key cannot be recognized if it
is covered by an object (e.g. al uminum b rief
case) which
screens the radio s ignal. Elec tron­
ic dev ices such as cell phones can also inter­
fere with the radio s ignal.
Pres s brak e pedal to start engine
This message appears if you do not press the
brake pedal to start the eng ine in a veh icle
with an automat ic transm iss ion.
Press clutch pedal to sta rt engine
T his message ap pears if you do not press the
clutch pedal to start the engine in a vehicle
with a manual transmission. .,.

Shift to N or P to start engine
This message appea rs whe n attempti ng to
sta rt the engine if the se le ctor lever for the
a u tomatic t ransmission is not in the P or N
p osition. The engine can on ly be sta rted w ith
the selector in these posit ions .
Is the key in the vehicle?
This m essage appears if the maste r key is re­
moved from t he vehi cle w ith the eng ine run­
ni ng.
If the mas ter key is no longe r in the ve ­
hicl e, yo u ca n not swi tch on the igni tion a fter
s t opping the eng ine a nd you also canno t st art
the eng ine again. Mo reover, yo u cannot lock
the vehicle from the outside with the key .
Shift to P otherwise vehicle can roll away.
Doors do not lo ck if lever is not in P.

parking brake
Operation
The ele ctromechani cal parking brake replaces
the hand br ake.

Your vehicle is equipped with an e lectrome ­
c hanical p arking bra ke. The pa rking bra ke is

t ional ha nd b rake, the electromechanical
par king b rake provides vario us conv enience
and sa fe ty f unct ion s.

The starting assist function ensures that the
parking brake is released automatically upon starting.

The clutch pedal must be depressed all the
way before you can start the engine.
T he manual transmission in your Audi is
equipped with an
interlock-feature.
~ Depress the clutch pedal all the way.
~ Start the engine with the gearshift lever in
Neutral and the clutch pedal depressed.
(D Note
Always depress the clutch pedal fully when
changing gears . Do not hold the vehicle on
a hill with the clutch pedal partially de­
pressed. This may cause premature clutch
wear or damage .
@ Tips
-Resting your hand on the gearshift lever
knob while driving will cause premature
wear in the transmission.
- The back-up lights go on when you shift
into Reverse w ith the ignition on.

Introduction
Applies to vehicles: with mult itronic/5 tronic/tiptronic
The automatic transmission is controlled elec ­
tronically. The transmission upshifts or down­
shifts automatically depending on which drive
program is selected .
When a
moderate driving style is used, the
transmission selects the most economical
driving mode. It will then change up early and
delay the downshifts to give better fuel econ ­
omy .
The transmission switches to a sporty mode
after a kick-down or when the driver uses a
sporty driving style characterized by quick ac ­
celerator pedal movements, heavy accelera­
t ion, frequent changes in speed and trave ling
at the maximum speed.
If desired, the driver can also select the gears
manually (tiptronic mode) ~ page 91.
Various automatic transmissions may be in­
stalled, depending on the model:
multitronic ® transmission
The multitronic ® transmission is a continuous ­
ly variable transmission. Power is transferred
using a multidisk clutch. In contrast to con­
ventional automatic transmissions using shift­ ing operations, the transmission ratio in the
continuously variable transmiss ion is changed
continuously . This optimizes the comfort level
and conserves fuel.
S tronic® transmission
The S tronic ® is a dual-clutch transmission .
Power is transferred using two clutches that
work independently from one another_ They
replace the torque converter used in conven­
tiona l automatic transmissions and allow the ..,_

vehicle to accelerate without a noticeable in­
terruption in traction.
tiptronic transmission
I n the tiptronic transmission, power is trans­
ferred by a torque converter.
Selector lever positions

The selector lever position engaged appears

P - Park
In this selector lever position the transmis­
sion is mechanically locked. Engage P only
when the vehicle is
completely stopped ¢ &

To shift in or out of pos ition P, you must first
press and hold the brake pedal and then press
the release button in the selector lever handle
wh ile mov ing the se lector lever to or from P.
You can shift out of this position only with the
ignition on .
R-Reverse
Select R only when the vehicle is at a full stop
and the engine is running at idle speed ¢ & in

page 94 .
Before you move the selector lever to R, press
both the release button in the handle of the
selector lever
and the brake pedal at the same
time. When the
ignition is on, the backup lights illu­
minate when the selector lever is moved into
R.
N -Neutral
The transmission is in neutral in this position .
Shift to this position for standing with the
brakes applied ¢

When the vehicle is stat ionary or at speeds
below 1 mph (2 km/h), yo u must always apply
the footbrake before and whi le moving the
lever out of N.
D/S - Normal position for driving forward
In the D/S position, the transmission can be
operated either in the normal mode D or in
the sport mode S . To select the sport mode S,
pull the selector lever back briefly. Pulling the
lever back again will se lect the normal mode
D. The instrument cluster disp lay shows the
selected driving mode.
In the
normal mode D, the transmission auto­
matically selects the suitable gear ratio.
It de­
pends on engine load, vehicle speed and driv­
ing style .
Select the
sport mode S for sporty driving .
T he vehicle makes full use of the engine's
power. Shift ing may become noticeable when
accelerating.
When the vehicle is stationary or at speeds
below 1 mph (2 km/h), you must always app ly
the foot brake before and while moving the lever to D/S out of N.
A WARNING
Read and follow all WARNINGS ¢ & in

(D Note
Coasting downhill with the transm ission in
N and the engine not running will result in
damage to the automatic transmission
and possibly the catalytic conve rter. .,..
