& WARNING
Always take the key with you when you
leave the vehicle . The key can disarm the
electronic engine immobilizer and perm it
an unauthor ized person to start the engine
and enable ope rat ion of the vehi cle sys­
tems such as powe r window or power sun­
roof leading to ser ious personal in jury .
- The vehicle cannot be started if an unau­
thorized key is used. The vehi cle may not
star t if another radio device such as a key
for another vehicle o r a tra nsponder is
l ocated on the key ring.

ing. Never transport objects la rger than
those which fit complete ly into the lug­

- Never leave your vehicle unattended es­
peci ally with the rear lid left open. A
chi ld cou ld craw l into the car through the
luggage compartment and p ull the lid
shut, becoming trapped a nd u nable to
get o ut. To reduce the risk of personal in­
jury, never let c hildren play in or around
your veh icle. Always keep the rear lid as
well as the vehicle doors closed when not
in use.

@ Tips
When the vehicle is locked, the rear lid can
be opened separately by pressing the but­
ton

-Never close the rear lid inattentively or

closing force of the rear lid is limited,
you can still seriously injure yourself or
others.
-Always ensure that no one is within
range of the rear lid when it is moving, in
particular close to the hinges and the up­
per and lower edges -fingers or hands
can be pinched.
- To help prevent poisonous exhaust gas
from being drawn into the vehicle, al­
ways keep the rear lid closed while driv­ ing. Never transport objects larger than
those which fit completely into the lug­ gage area, because then the rear lid can­
not be fully closed .

child could crawl into the car through the
luggage compartment and pull the lid
shut, becoming trapped and unable to get out . To reduce the risk of personal in­
jury, never let children play in or around
your vehicle . Always keep the rear lid as
well as the vehicle doors closed when not in use.
- If there is a luggage rack or bicycle rack
mounted on the rear lid, it may not be
able to open completely or an opened rear lid may close by itself because of the
added weight . So the open rear lid must
be supported or the weight must be re­
moved from the luggage rack first .
(D Tips
-When the vehicle is locked, the rear lid
can be unlocked separately by pressing
the button
~ on the master key. When
the rear lid is closed again, it locks auto­
matically .
- The following applies to vehicles equip­
ped with the convenience key* feature: if
the remote control key is left in the lug­
gage compartment, luggage compart­
ment will automatically unlock itself af- ter you
lock the vehicle. This prevents
you from unintentionally locking your
key in the luggage compartment.
- If the vehicle battery charge drops be­
low a certain level, you can still open or
close the rear lid manually, however, you
will need to apply more force to close it.
Sedan: Rear lid emergency release
Applies to vehicles: with fixed rear seat backrest

opened, the switch is inoperative.
A WARNING
-
Pay careful attention when closing the
sunroof- otherwise serious injury could re­
sult! For this reason, always remove the ig-
nition key when leaving the vehicle.

Valet parking
Applies to vehicles: with fold ing and lockable rear seat­
backs
The valet parking feature protects the lug­
gage comportment from unauthorized ac­
cess.

You can switch the "valet parking function" on
when someone else is parking your vehicle.
When the function is switched on, the vehicle
can be driven, locked and unlocked us ing the
maste r key, but access to the luggage com­
partment is not permitted .

You can activate various systems s uch as ga­
rage doors, security systems and home light­
ing from inside your vehicle using the garage
door opener (Homelink). There are three but­
tons for this in the vehicle headliner that can
be in used in place of up to three hand-held
transmitters .
To operate systems using the garage door
opener, the three buttons in the roof headlin­
er must be programmed first.
A WARNING
Make sure no people or objects are in the
i mmediate vicin ity of the equ ipment when
using or p rogramming the garage door
opener. People can be injured and objects
can be damaged if they are ca ught in the
eq uipment .

- The light sensor* for headlight control is
located in the rear view m irror mount.
You should therefore not apply any st ick­
ers to the windsh ield in this area in order
to prevent malfunctions or failures.
- Some exterior lighting functions can be
adjusted
c> page 50.
- When you remove your key from the igni­
tion while the vehicle's lights are turned
on, a buzzer sounds as long as the driv­
er's door is open .
- In cool or damp weather, the ins ide of
the headlights, turn signals and tail lights can fog over due to the tempera­
ture difference between the inside and
outside. They will clea r shor tly after
switching them on. This does not affect
the service life of the lighting.
- In the even t of a light sensor malfunc­
tion, the driver is no tified in the instru­
ment cluster disp lay¢

Turn signals and high beam lever
The lever operates the turn signals, the high
beams and the headlight flasher .

To help yo u see the curb when backing into a
parking space, the surface of the mirror t ilts
slightly . The knob m ust be in the
P posit ion
for this to happen .
You ca n adjus t the tilted mirror sur face by
turn ing the knob in the des ired direction .
When you move out of reverse and into anoth­
e r gear, the new mirror posit ion is stored and
assigned to the key you are using.
T he mirror goes back into its origina l posit io n
once yo u drive forward faster than 9 mph
(15 km/h) or switch the ignition off .
_& WARNING
Curved mirror sur faces (convex or sphe ri­
c al *) incre ase yo ur field of v iew. Remem­
ber that vehicles or o ther objects will ap­
pear smaller and farther away than w hen
seen in a flat m irror. If you use this mirror
to estimate distances of following veh icles
w hen changing lanes, you co uld estimate
incorrectly and ca use an accide nt.

- If the mirro r ho using is moved u ninten­
tiona lly (for example, whi le park ing your
vehicle), then you must first fo ld the mir­
ror electrically. Do not readjust the m ir­

Installing the head restraints
.. Slide the posts on the head restraint down
into the guides until you feel the posts click

So that the driver can have a better view to
the rear, the head restraints should be pushed
down completely when the rear seats are not
occupied .

- Only remove the rear seat head restraints
when necessary in order to install a child

page 173. Install the head re­
straint again immediately once the child
seat is removed. Driving without head re­
straints or with head restraints that are

of serious or fatal neck injury dramatical­
ly.

Correctly adjusted head restraints and
safety belts are an extremely effective
combination of safety features .
Seat memory
Description
Applies to vehicles: with memory function
The memory function allows you to quickly
and easily store and recall personal seating
profiles for the dr iver . The memory function is
operated through the master key and the memory buttons in the driver's door.
The driver's seating profi le is stored and as­
signed to the master key each time the vehicle
is locked. When you open the door, the seat profile is
automatically recalled.
If two people
use one vehicle, it is recommended that each
person always uses "their own" master key.
Up to 2 seat profiles can be stored in the
memory buttons in the driver's door. Once
they are stored, these seat profiles can be se­
lected at any time .
In addition to the driver's seat settings, you
can also store and access the exterior mirror
adjustment settings* using the remote con­
trol key or memory button.
Remote control key
Applies to vehicles: wit h seat memory
To assign the driver's seat settings to the re­
mote control key when locking the vehicle, the
function must be activated in the rad io or
MMI*
