-Never open the hood if you see or hear
steam or coolant escaping from the en­
gine compartment -you risk being scald­
ed . Wait until you can no longer see or
hear steam or coo lant escaping.
- The engine compartment of any veh icle
is a dangerous area . Before you perform
any work in the engine compartment,
turn of the eng ine and allow it to cool.

illuminates . There is a malfunct ion in the
engine cooling system -you could damage
your eng ine .
@-Steering column lock
• Stee ring def ective! D o not drive vehicle!
If the indicator light turns on and the mes­
sage appears, the re is an elect ronic steer ing
col umn lock ma lfunction. You ca nnot switch
the ign ition on.
Do
not tow your vehicle because it ca nnot be
steered. Seek professional ass istance.
Ill! Ste ering lock: Contact d ealer!
If the indicator light t urns on and the mes­
sage appears, there is an electronic steer ing
column lock malfunction.
Drive to yo ur authorized Audi dea le r immedi­
ately to have the malfunction corrected .
A WARNING
-
Your vehicle must not be towed in the
event of a malfunct ion in the electron ic
steering column lock because it cannot be
steered due to the locked steering .
If it is
tow ed w ith th e stee ring lock ed, there is
the risk of a n accident .
©-Ignition lock
• Ignition lock d efe ctive. Contact d eal er! If
the indicator light turns on and the mes­
sage appears, do
not switch the ignition off
because you may not be ab le to sw itch it on
again.
Drive to your authorized Audi dealer immedi­
ately to have the ma lfunction corrected.
On vehicles with conve nience key*, the engine
shou ld not be switched off using the
I STAR T ENGINE ST OPI button because the en­
gine cannot be started again after the ignition
has been switched off.

The symbol's appearance might be differ­
ent in some mode ls.
FJ,/ ~ Electronic Stabilization Control
(ESC)
If the Jj] ind icator light blinks while driv ing ,
the ESC or ASR (Anti-Slip Regulation) is active­
ly regu lating.
If the D] ind icator light turns on , the system
has switched the ESC off . In this case, you can
switch the ign ition off and then on to switch
the ESC on aga in. The ind icator lig ht tu rns off
whe n the system is functioning f ully.

Stabilizat ion control (ESC /ABS ): Fault! See

If the indicator light DJ and the ABS indicator
light
fJD (USA models) ; tiJ (Canada models)
turn on and the message appears, the ABS or
electron ic different ial lock is malfunctioning .
Th is also causes the ESC to malfunction . The
brakes still function with their normal power,
but A BS is not active.
D rive to your author ized Audi dealer immedi­
ately to have the malfunction corrected .

26 Driver information d isplay
The values in the single -trip or the total-trip
memory can a ll be reset to zero at the same
time under
Reset in the menu.
I n addition, you can determine what informa­
tion from the trip computer should be shown
in the instrument cluster d isplay. If one of the
p ieces of driver information is turned
Off, that
driver information will not be shown in the
display. The information will continue to be
calculated by the trip computer and can be
turned back
On at any time .
@ Tips
-This function is not available on all
vehicles.
- The dr iving information in the efficiency
program is also reset to zero with the
s ingle-trip memory.
Gearshift Indicator
App lies to vehicles: with manua l transmission and gear­
shift indicator
This indicator can help conserve fuel.

In order to become familiar with the gearshift
indictor, at first just drive the way you are
used to. If the current gear -and the driving
situa tion -is not the best one for conserving
fuel, then the indicator will display the recom­
mended gear. The display shows the current
gear and the gear that is recommended
¢ fig. 12.
- Upshifting The display will light up to the
right of the gear currently se lected if it is
recommending a higher gear.
-Downshifting: The display will light up to
the
left of the gear currently selected if it is
recommend ing a lower gear.
Sometimes the indicator will recommend
skipping a gear (3
> S).
If there is no gearshift recommendation, then
j us t drive in the appropriate gear for conserv­
ing fuel.
(D Note
This indicator can help you conserve fuel.
This indicator is not meant to show you
which gear you should always be in in all
driving situations . Sometimes, in situa­
tions such as passing, driving through
mountains or when towing a trailer, there
won't be any gearshift recommendation.
@ Tips
The display does not light up when the
clutch pedal is being depressed.
Efficiency program
Description

T he efficiency program can help you to use
less fue l. It evaluates driving information in
reference to fuel consumption and shows oth­
er equipment influencing consumption as well

suitab le gear is engaged or if you sho uld sh ift
up or down.

displayed.
A scale @also shows the c urrent tota l con ­
sumption of all othe r equipment .

Child safety Locks
Child safety locks in the rear doors
The child safety locks® prevent the rear
doors from opening from the inside .

When the light switch is in the A UTO

lights can be changed in the automatic driving
light function.
Daytime running lights

It is activated a utomat ica lly each
time the ignition is switched on.
Travel mode*
T he headlight beam is asymmetrical. This pro­
v ides stronger illum ination on the s ide of the
road on wh ich you are driving .
If you are driv­
i ng in a count ry that d rives on the opposite
side of the road from your own country, th is
will cau se glare for on coming dr ivers. To pre­
vent glare:
- Trave l mode must be selected in vehicles
with Xenon headlights*.
- In veh icles with halogen headlights, ce rtain
areas of the head light lenses must be cov­
ered w ith wate rproof adhesive covers that
prevent light from passing thro ugh. Fo r

The emergency flashers makes other moto­
rists aware that you or your vehicle are in an
emergency situation .

When the emergency f las hers are on, all four
turn s ignals b link at the same time. The turn
s ignal indicator lights .

ment cluster, as well as the light in the emer­
gency flasher switch ~ blink likewise.
You can indicate a lane change or a tu rn w hen
the emergency flashers are switched on by us­
ing the turn signal lever. The emergency flash­
ers stop temporarily .
T he emergency flashers also work when the
ign ition is turned off .
T he emergency flashers w ill turn on a utomat i­
ca lly if yo u are in an accident where the airbag
has deployed.

You sho uld turn on the emergency f las hers
when:
- yo u are the last veh icle standing in a t raf ­
fic jam so that any other vehi cles coming
can see you, or whe n
- yo ur vehicle has bro ken down or you are
in an eme rgency s ituation, or when
- yo ur vehicle is be ing towed by a tow
truck or if you are tow ing another vehicle
beh ind you.

The appearance and location of the rear read­
ing lights may differ depending on the model.
Instrument illumination
The basic brightness of the illumination for
the instruments, the center console and the
display can be adjusted .

increase the brightness .

nal posit ion.
(!') Tips
The instrument i llumination (for dials and
needles) lights on when the ignition is
switched on and the vehicle lights are
turned off . As the daylight fades, the illu­
mination of the dia ls likewise dims auto­
matically and wi ll go out completely when
the ou tside light is very low. This feature is
meant to rem ind you to sw itch on the
headlights when outside light conditions
become poor .

-If electrolyte gets into the eyes, flush
them thoroughly with large amounts of
clean water for at least 15 minutes;
medical attention is recommended.
- If electrolyte contacts skin, flush affect­
ed area with clean water for at least 15
minutes and then wash affected area
with soap and water; medical attention
is recommended. Thoroughly wash af­
fected clothing and shoes before reuse.
-If swallowed and person is conscious,
rinse mouth with water for at least 15
minutes. Do not induce vomiting unless
instructed to do so by medical professio­
nal. Get medical attention immediately.
Liquid electrolyte leaking from broken mir­
ror glass will damage any plastic surfaces
it comes in contact with. Clean up spilled
electrolyte immediately with clean water
and a sponge.
(D} Tips
- Switch ing off the dimming function of
the inside rear view mirror also deacti­
vates the automatic dimming function of
the exterior mirrors.
- Automatic dimming for the mirror only
operates properly if the sun shade* for
the rear window is not in use or the light
strik ing the inside mirror is not hinde red
by other objects.
- The automatic dimming mirrors do not
dim when the interior lighting is turned
on or the reverse gear is selected .

The sun visors for the driver and passenger
can be pulled out of their brackets in the cen­
ter of the vehicle and turned towards the
doors @. After the sun visor has been turned
to the door, it can be extended lengthw ise.
The mirror light switches on when the cover
over the vanity mirror @opens.
Rear door sun shade

sunroof do not come into contact with
objects on the roof.
Loading the roof rack
Always distribute loads evenly. J\llake sure
anything on the roof rock is securely tied
down.

.. Always attach items to the roof rack securely
before you drive off.
The maximum permissible roof weight is
2 00 lb (90 kg ). The roof weight is the total of
the we ight of the roof rack, the attachments
and the cargo you are carry ing. You must also
not exceed the maximum load weight for the
roof rack you are using .
When us ing a roof rack system which has a
lower load carry ing capac ity , you must not use
up the total max imum perm issible load carry­
ing capacity specified above. Instead, you
should load the roof rack system only to the maximum capacity spec ified by the manufac­
turer of the roof rack system.
A WARNING
Weak, damaged or improper straps used
to secure items to the roof rack can fail
during hard braking or in a co llision and
cause serious personal injury.
- Make sure the roo f rack is insta lled exact­
ly as specified above
,=;,page 69.
- Always use suitable mounting straps for
sec uring items to the roof rack to help
prevent items from shifting or flying for­
ward.
- Items on the roof rack must always be
sec urely mo unted.
- T he use of a roof rack can negative ly af ­
fect the way a vehicle handles . Cargo
that is large, heavy, bulky, long or flat
will have a greater negative influence on

the vehicle's aerodynamics, center of
