26 Driver information d isplay
The values in the single -trip or the total-trip
memory can a ll be reset to zero at the same
time under
Reset in the menu.
I n addition, you can determine what informa­
tion from the trip computer should be shown
in the instrument cluster d isplay. If one of the
p ieces of driver information is turned
Off, that
driver information will not be shown in the
display. The information will continue to be
calculated by the trip computer and can be
turned back
On at any time .
@ Tips
-This function is not available on all
vehicles.
- The dr iving information in the efficiency
program is also reset to zero with the
s ingle-trip memory.
Gearshift Indicator
App lies to vehicles: with manua l transmission and gear­
shift indicator
This indicator can help conserve fuel.

In order to become familiar with the gearshift
indictor, at first just drive the way you are
used to. If the current gear -and the driving
situa tion -is not the best one for conserving
fuel, then the indicator will display the recom­
mended gear. The display shows the current
gear and the gear that is recommended
¢ fig. 12.
- Upshifting The display will light up to the
right of the gear currently se lected if it is
recommending a higher gear.
-Downshifting: The display will light up to
the
left of the gear currently selected if it is
recommend ing a lower gear.
Sometimes the indicator will recommend
skipping a gear (3
> S).
If there is no gearshift recommendation, then
j us t drive in the appropriate gear for conserv­
ing fuel.
(D Note
This indicator can help you conserve fuel.
This indicator is not meant to show you
which gear you should always be in in all
driving situations . Sometimes, in situa­
tions such as passing, driving through
mountains or when towing a trailer, there
won't be any gearshift recommendation.
@ Tips
The display does not light up when the
clutch pedal is being depressed.
Efficiency program

the most fuel is listed first. If more than three
items using fuel a re switched on, the equip­
ment that is currently using the most fuel is
displayed.
A scale @also shows the c urrent tota l con ­
sumption of all othe r equipment .

For safety reasons, the par king brake is re­
leased au tomatically only when the dr iv­
er 's safety belt is engage d in the buckle.
Starting off with a trailer
To prevent rolling back unintentionally on an
incline , do the following:
~ Keep the switch @¢ page 87, fig . 101
pulled and depress the accelerator. The
park ing brake stays app lied and prevents
the vehicle from rolling backward.
~ You can release the switch @once you are
sure that you are develop ing enough dr iv ing
force at the wheels by depress ing the accel­
erator .
Depending on the weight of the r ig (vehicle
and trailer) and the severity of the incl ine, you
may roll backwards as you start . You can pre­
ve nt rolling backwards by holding the parking
b rake sw itch @pulled out and accelerating -
jus t as you would whe n starting on a hill with
a conventional hand brake.
Emergency braking
In the event that the conventional brake sys ­
tem fails or locks.
~ I n an eme rgency, pull the sw itch @
¢page 87, fig. 101 and continue to p ull it
to s low your vehi cle down wi th the pa rk ing
brake .
~ As soon as you release the switch @ or ac-
ce lerate, the braking process stops.
I f you pull the switch @and ho ld it above a
speed of about 5 mph (8 km/h), the emergen ­
cy braking function is initiated . The vehicle is
braked at a ll four wheels by activating the hy­
draulic brake system. T he brake performance
is similar to making an emergency stop ¢
&. .
In order not to activate the emergency brak ­
ing by m istake, an a udible warning tone (buz­
zer) sounds when the switch @is pulled. As
soon as the switch @ is released, or the accel-

erator peda l is depressed, eme rgency braking
stops.
A WARNING
Emergency braking should only be used in
an emergency, when the norma l foot brake
has fa iled or the brake pedal is obstructed.
Using the parking brake to perform emer­
gency b rak ing will slow your vehicle down
as if you had made a full bra ke application .
T he laws of physics cannot be suspended
even with ESC and its asso ciated compo­
nents (ABS, ASR , EDS) . In corners and
when road or weathe r conditions are bad,
a full brake application can ca use the vehi­
cle to sk id or the rear end to break away -
risking an accident.
Speed warning system
Overv iew
The speed warning system helps you to keep
your driving speed below a set speed limit.
The speed warn ing system warns if the driver
exceeds a previous ly stored max imum speed.
A war ning tone w ill so und as soon as the vehi­
cle speed exceeds the set speed by about 3 mph (3 km/h). At the same time, a warn ing
symbol appears in the display. The symbo l's
appearance might be different in some mod ­
els.
T he speed wa rn ing system has one or two*
warning thresholds that func tion independ ­
en tly of each othe r and that have somewhat
different purposes:
Speed warning 1
You can use speed warn ing 1 to set the maxi­
mum speed while you are d riving. This se tting
will re ma in in effec t unti l yo u t urn
off the ig ni­
tion, assuming that yo u have no t changed or
reset the setting.

tance signa l to sound again at the normal
volume.
R ear view came ra co verage area
The MM I d isplay shows the area covered by

We recommend that you p ractice parking with
the rear view camera in a traffic -free location
or parking lot to become familiar with the sys ­
tem, the orientation lines, and their function.
When do ing th is, there shou ld be good light
and weather conditions.
In t he MMI disp lay, objects or vehicles appear
closer or further away if:
- yo u are driving in reverse gear from a level
surface onto an incline, or a downward
s lope,
- you are driving in reverse gear toward pro ­
truding objects,
- the vehicle is carrying too much load in the
rear .
The accuracy of the or ientat ion lines and blue
surfaces d imin ishes if:
- the rear view camera does not prov ide a reli­
able image, for examp le, in poor visibility
condit ions or if the lens is dirty,
- the image on the screen is not visible due to
sun g lare and reflect ion.
Caring for the rear view came ra lens
The rear view camera is located above the rear
license plate bracket . Fo r the parking assist to
operate, the lens <=:>
fig. 134 must be kept
clean:
- Dampen the lens with a household alcoho l­
based glass cleaner, and clean the lens with
a dry cloth <=:>

- Remove snow with a hand brush and ice
preferably with a de -icing spray

-The parking aid cannot replace the driv­
er's attent ion. The dr iver alone is respon­
sible for park ing and similar driving ma­
neuvers .
-Always keep your eyes on the vehicle 's
surroundings, us ing the rea r view m irror
as well.
- Do not allow yourself to be dist racted
from traffic by the rear view camera p ic­
tures.
- If the position and the installation angle
of the camera has changed, for examp le,
after a rear end collision, do not conti nue
to use the system for s afety re asons .
H ave it checked by a qualified dea le rship.

- Low obstacles a lready s ignaled by a
wa rning can disappear from the system's
detect ion range as they are app ro ached
and w ill not continue to be signaled. Ob­
jects such as barrier chains, trailer d raw
bars, thin painted vertica l poles or fen­

posing risk of damage.
- Never use warm or hot water to remove
snow or ice from the rear view camera
lens -danger of crack format ion on the
lens!
- When cleaning the lens, never use prod­
ucts that are abrasive .
Switching on/off

The rear view camera switches on automati­
cally together with the acoustic pork assist when you put the vehicle in reverse.

- Please note that objects not touch ing the
ground can appear to be further away
than they really are (for example, the
bumper of a parked vehicle, a trailer
hitch, or the rear of a truck). In this case,
yo u should not use the help lines to he lp
with parking, which poses danger of an
accident!

and will not continue to be signaled. Ob­

el of the vehicle rear is represented de­
pending on the steering wheel angle.
The vehicle front swings out more than
the vehicle rear. Maintain plenty of dis­
tance from an obstacle so that your out­
s ide mirror or a corner of your vehicle
does not collide with any obstacles -dan­
ger of accident!

Parallel Parking
Applies to vehicles: with parking system (rear, with rear
v iew camera)
Use parking mode 2 to help you park on the
edge of a street.

The following steps apply only when there is
no obstacle (such as a wall) near the parking
spot. Otherwise, please read the "Tips on Parking Next to Obstacles"¢

Electronic Stabilization
Control (ESC)
Description
ESC helps to improve road holding and vehicle
dynamics to help reduce the probability of
skidd ing and loss of veh icle control. It works
only when the eng ine is running. ESC detects
certain difficult driv ing situations, including
when the vehicle is beginning to spin (yaw) out of cont ro l and he lps you to get the vehicle
back under control by select ively b rak ing the
wheels, and/or red ucing engine powe r and
p roviding steering assistance to help hold the
ve hicle on the driver's intended course . The in­
dicator light
DJ in the instrument cluster
blinks when ESC is taking action to help you
control the vehicle.
ESC has limitations.
It is important to remem­
ber that ESC cannot overcome the laws of
phys ics. It will not a lways be able to help out
under all conditions you may come up against.
For example, ESC may not always be able to
h elp you master situat ions where there is a
sudden change in the coefficient of fr iction of
the road surface. When there is a sect io n of
d ry road that is s udden ly cove red with water,
slush o r snow, ESC canno t perform the same
way it would on the dry su rface.
If the vehicle
hydroplanes (rides on a c ush ion of wate r in­
stead of the road surface), ESC wi ll not be
ab le to he lp you steer the veh icle because con-

tact with the pavement has been interrupted
and the vehicle cannot be braked or steered .
D uring fast corner ing, particular ly on wind ing
roads, ESC cannot always deal as effectively
with difficult dr iv ing s ituations than at lower
speeds. When towing a trailer, ESC is not able
to help you regain control as it would if you
were not tow ing a trailer.
Always adjust your speed and driving style to road, traffic and weather conditions . ESC can­
not override the vehicle's physical lim its, in­
crease the availab le tract ion, or keep a veh icle
o n the road if road departu re is a result of
driver ina ttent io n. Instead , ESC imp roves the
poss ibility of keep ing t he vehicle under con­
trol and on the road during extreme maneu­
vers by using the driver's steering i nputs to
help keep the vehicle go ing in the intended di­
rect ion. If you are traveling at a speed that
causes you to run off the road before ESC can
provide any assistance, you may not experi­
ence the benefits of ESC.
ESC is switched on all the time. In certain sit­
uat ions when you need less traction, you can
switch off ASR by pressing the butto n
[ill
~ page 187, fig. 174 or~ page 187,
fig. 175. Be sure to sw itch ASR on aga in when
you no lo nger need less traction.
The following systems are integrated in the
ESC:
Anti-lock bra king sy stem (ABS )
ABS prevents the whee ls from locking up
when brak ing. T he vehicle can st ill be steered
even dur ing hard braking. App ly steady pres­
su re to the brake peda l. Do not pump the ped­
al. A pulsing in the brake pedal ind icates that
the system is helping you to brake the veh icle .
Brake assi st system
The brake ass ist system can decrease braking
distance. It increases brak ing power when the
drive r presses the brake peda l quickly in emer­
gency s ituations. You must press and hold the
brake pedal unti l the s ituation is over. In
vehicles wi th adap tive c rui se control*, the
brake assis t system is more sensitive if the

Trailer towing Driving with a trailer
General information
Your Audi was designed primarily for passen­
ger transportation .
If you plan to tow a tra iler, p lease remember
that the addit ional load will affect durab ility,
economy and performance .
T railer towing not on ly places more stress on
the vehicle, it also calls for more concentra­
tion from the driver.
F or this reason, a lways fo llow the operating
and driving instructions provided and use
common sense.
Technical requirements
Traile r hitch
Use a weight-carrying hitch conforming to the
gross trailer we ight. The hitch must be suita­
b le for your veh icle and trailer and must be
mounted secure ly on t he veh icle's chassis at a
technically sound location . Use only a t railer
h itch w ith a removab le ball moun t. A lways
check with the tr ailer hitch man ufac tur er to
make sure that you are using the correct
hitch.
Do not use a bumper hitch.
T he hitc h must be installed in such a way that
it does not inte rfe re with the impac t-absorb­
i ng b umper syst em. No modifica tions should
be made to the vehicle exhaus t and b rake sys­
tems . From t ime to time, check that a ll hitch
mo unt ing bolt s remain securely fas tened.
W hen you are not tow ing a trailer, remove the
trai le r hi tch ball moun t. T h is prevents the
hi tch from causing damage sho uld your ve hi­
cle be str uck from be hind

Trailer brakes
