Driving
Engine automatically r esta rt s
The standard Start/Stop mode will be canceled
during a stop phase in the follow ing situations.
The engine restarts without any action by the driver .
- The vehicle rolls, for examp le while on a slope.
- The inter io r temperatu re differs from the tem-
perature se lected in the A/C system.
- The w indshield is being defrosted.
- The brake pedal is pressed several t imes in a
row .
- The battery charge level becomes too low .
- Power consumption is high .
The engine can turn off again when the condi­
tions for Start/Stop mode are met .
Ignition is swit ched off aut omaticall y
To prevent the battery from dra ining, the ignition
will sw itch off
aut omati cally under the following
conditions:
- T he Sta rt/Stop system has stopped the engine.
- The vehicle must be stationary .
- You left the veh icle and the engine was not re-
started within approximately 30 seconds.
If this happens, you will see the message
I gni ­
tion turn s off automatically in the instrument
cluster and the activated low beams are replaced
by the parking light. The parking lights will
sw itch off after approximately 30 minutes or
when you lock the vehicle .
The ignition also switches off when you lock the
veh icle from the outs ide dur ing a stop phase.
If the Start/Stop system has not turned off the
engine or if you have sw itched the Start/Stop sys­
tem off manually, the ignition will not be auto­
mat ically switched off and the engine w ill cont in­
ue to run~& .

To red uce the risk of poisoning, neve r allow
t he engine to r un in confined spaces.

-If you leave the ve hicle with the D/S or R se­
lector lever position engaged, the parking
brake is automatically set.
- If you select the D or N selector lever posi­
tion after shifting into reverse, the vehicle must be driven faster than 6 mph (10 km/h)
in order for the engine to switch off again.

slow your vehicle down as if you had made a
full braking maneuver. ESC and the associat ­
ed components (ABS, ASR, EDL) cannot over­
come the laws of physics . In corners and
when road or weather conditions are bad , a
full brake application can cause the vehicle to skid or the rear end to swerve, which increas­
es the risk of an accident.
Hill hold assist
Hill hold assist makes it easier to start on hills .
The system is activated when the brake pedal is pressed for a
few seco nds. The vehicle must be in
an uphill direction of travel.
After releasing the brake pedal , the brake power
is held for a
brief moment to prevent the vehicle
from rolling back when starting. During this
time , you can easily begin to
move your vehicle.
& WARNING
- If you did not begin moving immediately af­
ter releasing the brake pedal, the vehicle
could begin to roll backward under certain
conditions . Press the brake pedal or set the
parking brake immediately .
-If the engine stalls, press the brake pedal or
set the parking brake immediately.
- To prevent the vehicle from rolling back un­
intentionally when starting in stop-and-go
traffic, keep the brake pedal pressed for a
few seconds before you start driving.
- Switch the ignition off when you leave the
vehicle, even for a short period of time. Also
set the
parking brake to prevent the vehicle
from rolling unintentionally . This applies
particularly when children remain in the
ve­
hicle, because there is the risk of an acci­
dent .
Automatic transmission
Introduction
The automati c transmission is controlled elec ­
tronically . The transmission shifts up or down au­
tomatically depending on which drive program is
selected .
Driving
When a moderate driving style is used, the
transmission selects the most economical driving
mode. The transmission shifts up at a lower RPM
and shifts down at a higher RPM to improve fuel
efficiency.
The transmission switches to a sporty mode after
a kick-down or when the driver uses a
sporty
driving style
characteri zed by quick accelerator
pedal movements, heavy acceleration, frequent
changes in speed and t raveling at the maximum
speed .
If desired, the driver can also select the gears
manually (tiptronic mode) ¢ page 86.

Driving
Sel ector l ev e r lo ck
The se lector lever lock prevents you from se lect­
ing a position unintentionally, causing the vehicle
to ro ll. When engaging some selector lever posi­
tions, you must press the locking button

You must press the brake pedal to engage a se­
lector lever position when the engine is running
and the vehicle is stationary.
You do not have to press the brake peda l if you
shift from D to R within one second. This allows
you to "rock" the vehicle to free it when it is stuck.

N -Neutral (idle )
The t ransmission is in idle in th is position. To en­

If you switch the engine off when the N posit io n
i s selected, the transmission remains in N for ap ­
prox imately 30 minutes and then P is engaged.
You cannot se lect t he N pos ition when the ig ni­
tion is swi tched off. When dr iv ing th rough an au­
tomat ic car wash, fi rst select the N position and
then turn the eng ine off.
Fo r safety reasons, the veh icle canno t be loc ked
whe n the t ransmiss io n is in the N pos it ion.
D IS -Driving forward
When the transm iss ion is in the D/S posit ion, it
can be operated either in the norma l D mode or
i n the S sport mode. Move the selector lever bac k
to engage the S sport mode. You ca n only se lect
the S se lector lever position when the Dor E pos i­
tion is se lected . To select the Dor E position
again when S is engaged, move the selector lever back ¢&. . To sh ift from N to D when traveling at
speeds below 1 mph (2 km/h), press the brake pedal and shift into the D position¢&. .
In the
normal mode D, the transmission auto­
matically selects the suitable gear ratio. It de­
pends on engine load, vehicle speed and driving
style.
Se lect the
sport mode S fo r sporty driving . The
vehicle makes f ull use of the engine 's power.
Sh ift ing may become noticeable when accelerat­
i ng .
The S selector lever posit ion engages automati ­
ca lly when you select
dynamic mode in drive se­
l ect*.
A WARNING
Read and follow all WARNINGS.
-The vehicle can roll even if the ignit ion is
sw itched off.

Kick-down
Kick-down enables maximum acceleration.
When you press the accelerator pedal down be­
yond the resistance point, the automatic trans­
mission shifts down into a lower gear and the en­
gine utilizes its full power, depending on vehicle
speed and engine RPM. It shifts up into the next
higher gear once the maximum specified engine
RPM is reached .
A WARNING
Please note that the wheels could spin on
slick or slippery roads when kick-down is ac­
tive.
Launch control program
The launch control program provides the best
possible acceleration when starting from a stop.
Requirement: The engine must be at operating
temperature and the steering wheel must not be
turned .

The LED in the 10 ml button turns on.

Driving
A WARNING
-Always adapt your driving to the traffic flow.
- Only use the Launch control program when
road and traffic conditions allow it and oth­
er drivers will not be endangered or both­
ered by your driving and the vehicle's accel­
eration.
- Please note that the drive wheels can spin
and the vehicle can break away when sport
mode is switched on, especially when the
road is slippery.
- Once the vehicle has started moving, press
the
1 .$ OFFI button briefly to turn the sport
mode off.
(D Tips
- The transmission temperature may increase
significantly after using the launch control
program. If that happens, the program may
not be available for a few minutes. It will be
available again after a cool-down period.
- When accelerating using the launch control
program, all vehicle parts are subject to
heavy loads. This can lead to increased
wear.
Transmission malfunction
• Transmission: too hot. Please stop vehicle

Assist Electronic speed limiter
Your vehicle may be factory equipped with t ires
that are rated for a maximum speed of 130 mph (210 km/h). This is less than the maximum speed
of your vehicle. To reduce the risk of sudden tire
failure and loss of control if the vehicle is operat­
ed at excessive speeds, your vehicle also has an
electronic speed limiter . The electronic speed
limiter prevents your vehicle from going faster
than the t ire speed rating. For mo re information
¢page 317.
If the engine control unit receives faulty vehicle
road speed s ignals, the Malfunction Indicator
L amp (M IL)
¢..ij will illuminate. If this occurs,
contact the nearest autho rized Audi dealer for
assistance.
_& WARNING
Always observe the posted speed limits and
adjust you r speed to suit prevailing road, traf­
fic and weather condit ions. Never drive your
vehicle faster than the max imum speed rating
of the tires installed.
Speed warning system
Introduction
Applies to: vehicles with speed warning system
The speed warning system helps you to stay un­
der a specified maximum speed. -
The
speed warning system warns you if you are
exceeding the maximum speed that you have
stored . You will hear a warning tone when yo ur
speed exceeds the sto red va lue by approximate ly
3 mp h (3 km/h). The indi cator light also tur ns on
in the instrument cluster display

Manually set speed limit XXX mph (km /h ) ex­

The ind icator light [01 / (OJ turns off
when the speed decreases below the stored max­
imum speed.
Sett ing a threshold is recommended if you would
like to be reminded when you reach a certain
maximum speed. Situations where you may want

to do so include driving in a co untry with a gener­
al speed limit or if there is a specified maximum
speed for winte r tires.

Regardless of t he speed warning system, you
s h ou ld always monitor your speed using the
speedometer and make s ure yo u are fo llow ing
the lega l speed limit.

The stored speed and the [ij;ji j~i4 (USA models)/
Ill (Canada mode ls) indicator light appear in the
instrument cluster disp lay . An add itiona l indica­
tor appears in the Head -up display*.
The speed is maintained by modifying engine power or through an active brake intervention.
A WARNING
- Always pay attention to the traffic around
you when the cruise control system is in op­
eration. You are always responsible for your
speed and the distance between your vehi­
cle and other veh icles .
- For safety reasons, cruise control should not
be used in the city, in stop-and-go traffic, on
winding roads and when road condit ions are
poo r (such as ice, fog, gravel, heavy rain and
hydroplaning), because t his increases the
risk of an accident.
- Switch the cruise cont rol off temporar ily
when d riving i n turn ing lanes, h ighway exits
or in construction zones .
- Please note tha t unconsciously "resting"
yo ur foot on the accelerator pedal prevents
the cruise control from braking. This is be ­
cause pressing the acce lerato r pedal ove r­
rides the cruise contro l system.
- If a brake system ma lf u nction such as over ­
heating occurs when the cruise control sys­
tem is sw itched on, the braking function in
the system may be sw itched off. The rest of
the cruise control system functions remain
active as long as the

Before driving a long d istance on a steep
downward hill, decrease your speed and se­
lect a lower driving gea r. This makes use of
the engine b raking effect and relieves the
brakes.

Overriding the speed

You can press the acce lerator pedal down to in­

pass someone. The speed yo u sto red earl ie r w ill
r esume as soon as yo u release the acceler ator
pedal.
Howeve r, if yo u are exceedi ng the stored speed
by a considerable amount fo r a long time, the
c ruise contro l system will temporarily switch off.
The m:iJm (U SA mode ls) ! Ill (Canada models) in­
dicator light in the instrument cl uster turns off
and the stored speed is retained.
Preselecting a speed

You can pre -select your desired speed when the

General information
The predictive eff ici ency assist helps the driver to
d rive with an ticipation and therefore helps to
save fue l. The sy stem a ccesses p redic tive trip da­
t a (in cluding speed lim its, in cli ne s a nd the radius
of cur ves) from the n avigat ion sys tem* . Informa ­
tion from the camera-based traff ic sign recogn i­
tion* is also app lied to recognize traffic signs
c:> page24.
The mess ages disp layed depend on the navi ga­
tion data * being up-to-date and the co rrect iden ­
tification by the traffic sign recognition *.
When adaptive cruise contro l* is sw itche d off,
the predi ctive efficiency ass ist only p rovides not i­
fications without controlled intervent ions . When

adaptive cruise cont ro l* is sw itched on, the sys ­
tem responds to upcom ing situations a utomat i­

Audi adaptive cruise

The adaptive cru ise cont rol system is a comb ina­
tion of speed and dis tance regu lation.
It ass ists
t h e d river by bo th regu lating the speed and
maintain ing a d is ta nce to the vehicle driv ing
ahead, within the limits of the system. If the sys ­
tem detects a vehicle d riving ahead, the adaptive
cruise contro l can brake and accelerate yo ur vehi­
cle. T his makes driving more comfo rtable both
o n long st retches of hig hway and in stop-and-go
traffic .
What can adaptive cruise control do?
The adaptive cru ise control system uses video, ra­
dar, ultrasound and navigat ion data . Vehicles
driv ing ahead can be recognized up to 650 feet
(200 m) away .
Pred ictive functions offer the drive r additional
comfort and contr ibute to the reduct ion in fuel
consumption a nd CO2 em issions

On open roads with no traffic, it functions like a
cruise contro l system. The stored speed is main ­
ta ined . When approaching a vehicle d riving
ahead, the adaptive cruise contro l system auto­
matically brakes to match that vehicle's speed
and then maintains the set dis tance. As soon as
the system do es not detect a vehicle dr iv ing
ahea d, adaptive cruise cont rol accelerates up to
t h e s to red spee d.
In stop-a nd-go traffic, adap tive cruise control can
brake until the veh icle is sta tionary a nd then can .,.

Predictive control

General information
The predict ive control 1> uses the map informa­
tion from the navigation system in order to react
proactively when driving. Information from the
camera -based traffic sign recognition* is also ap­
plied to recognize traffic signs
c::> page 24. When
coming up to areas with speed limits or changes
in the course of the road (such as curves, inter­
sections or traffic c ircles), the system brakes au­
tomatically and then accelerates back up to the
set speed .
When adaptive cruise control is switched off, the
system only provides notifications without con­
trolled interventions
c::> page 95.
The driver can override the predictive contro l at
any time by pressing the accelerator or brake
pedal. If the system changes the veh icle speed to
adapt to speed limits, you can change the speed
using the lever
c::>page 99 , fig . 95.
Always switch off the predictive control in
the following situations:
-When increased attention is needed from the
driver .
- In poor weather conditions such as snow or
heavy rain .
- When driving on roads in poor cond ition.

Indicator in the instrument cluster display
When the adaptive cruise control is switched on
for the first time, th e availability of predictive
control is displayed in the status line with the m essage
ACC: 1111 + B active.
The symbol appears when the system
is regulating the speed to match a speed limit. As

- Pay attention to traffic and the area around
your vehicle when predictive control is switched on. The driver is always responsi­
ble for correctly assessing the traffic situa­
tion.
- There is an increase in the risk of an acci­
dent, because the system does not consider
"right of way" rules and also does not re­
spond to traffic lights .
- The system only considers traffic signs that
give a speed limit.
Assist
- The permitted speed can be exceeded if the
adaptation to a speed limit is incorrect. The
driver is responsible for adhering to the per­
mitted speed.
- The speed at which a curve is driven through
does not necessarily match your own driving
style . Brake the vehicle yourself when need ­
ed to reduce the risk of an accident.

-If a speed limit is detected, the stored
speed is also adjusted in the speedometer
LED line when the adaptive cruise control is
not active.
- The adaptation by the system depends on
the driving mode set in drive select* .
- Switching off predictive control, for exam­
ple when driving in low traffic zones, does
not cause the adaptive cruise control to
switch off .
-After switching on the ignition, the system
initially adjusts to a speed of 80 mph
(130 km/h) when driving onto highways
without a speed limit. Then the system ad­
justs to the last speed stored by the driver.
- There is no adaptation to speed limits when
driving through highway interchanges and
when driving on or off the expressway.
- There is no predictive control at speed limits
under 20 mph (30 km/h).
- If a speed limit is only detected by the cam­
era and the actual speed is significantly
higher, then the speed limit will blink in the
display until you have reached the required
speed

- Incorrect values from the camera-based traffic sign recognition* or outdated naviga­
tion system map data can lead to incorrect
or implausible control.
- When route guidance is switched on, the
system adapts to the route provided by the
navigation system. Driving without route
guidance or leaving a route can result in im­
plausible control.
- The system switches
off when outside of a
road system that is recorded in the naviga­
tion system map data.
