Head-up Display

The Head-up Display projects certain warnings or
selected information from the assist systems* or
navigation* on the windshield. The d isplay ap­
pears within the drive r's field of vision.
Switching on/off
• To switch the Head-up Display on or off, press
the knob

Adjusting the height
The height of the display can be adjusted to the
individual driver.

Settings in the Infotainment system

Display content
In the Infotainment system, yo u can specify
which information should be displayed: For ex­
ample, this can include navigation information*,
adaptive cruise control* or camera-based traffic
sign recognit ion* .
The display of certain information and some of the red indicator lights cannot be hidden in the
Infotainment system.
Brightness
You can adjust the display brightness in the Info­
tainment system. The display brightness decreas-

Picture rotation
You can rotate the picture in the Infotainment

favorable lighting conditions can have a
negative effect on the display .
- An opt imum disp lay depends on the seat
posi tion and the heigh t adjustment of the
head -up disp lay.

This chapter contains important information,
tips, instruct ions and warn ings that you need to
read and observe for your own safety, the safety
of your passengers and others. We have summar­
ized here what you need to know about safety
be lts, a irbags, child restra ints as well as child
safety. Your safety is for us
priority number 1 . Al­
ways observe t he i nfo rmation and wa rn ings in
this section - for your own safety as well as tha t
of yo ur passengers.
The information i n this section applies to all
model ve rsions of your vehicle . Some of the fea­
tures descr ibed in t his sec tions may be s tanda rd
eq uipment on some models, or may be optional
equipment on others. If yo u are not sure, ask
your author ized Audi dealer.
A WARNING
-Always make sure that you follow the in­
structions and heed the WARNINGS in th is
manual. It is in your inte rest and in the in­
te rest of your passengers .
- Always keep all of the Owner's Lite rature
manuals in your Audi when you lend o r sell
yo ur vehicle so that this important informa­
t ion w ill always be availab le to the dr iver

Safety equipment
The safety features are part of the occupant re­
straint system and work together to help reduce
the risk of injury in a wide variety of occident si t­
uations.
Your safety and the safety of yo ur passenge rs
should not be left to chan ce. Advan ces in tech­
nology have made a var iety of features av ail ab le
to help reduce t he risk of injury in an accident .

The following is a list of just a few of the sa fety
features in your Audi :
- sophis tic ated safety be lts fo r dr ive r and all pas-
senge r seat ing pos itions,
- safety belt p re tensioners,
- be lt height adjustment for the front seats,
- head restraints for each seating position,
- front airbags,
- knee airbags fo r the front seats,
- side airbags in the front seats and outboard
rear seats *,
- side curtain airbags,
- special LA TC H anchorages for the outboard rear
seats and top tether anchorages for chi ld re ­
straints for all of the rear seats,
- adjustab le steering col umn.
These ind iv idual safety features, can work to­
gether as a system to he lp protect you and your
pa ssengers in a wide range of a cciden ts. These
fea tures canno t wo rk as a sys tem if they a re not
a lways cor rec tly ad juste d and cor rect ly used.

Important things to do before driving
Safety is everybody's job! Vehicle and occupant
safety always depends on the informed and care­
ful driver .
For your safety a nd the safety of your passen ­
gers,
before driving alway s:
.,. Make sure that all lights and signals are operat­
ing correctly .
.,. Make sure that the tire pressure is correct .
.,. Make sure that a ll windows a re clean and afford
good v is ibility to the outs ide.

Automatic safety belt r etractors
Every safety be lt is equ ipped wi th an automatic
be lt retractor on the shoulder belt. Th is feature
l ocks the belt when the belt is pull ed out fast,
during hard braking and in an accident. The belt may also lock when you drive up or down a steep
h ill or through a sharp curve. During normal driv­
ing the belt lets you move freely.
Safet y be lt pret en sioner s
The safety belts are equipped with a belt preten­
sioner that helps to tighten the safety belt and
remove slack when the pretensioner is activated
c:> page 251. The function of the pretensioner is
monitored by a warning light
c:> page 33.
Con vertible loc king retractor
Every safety belt except the one on the driver
seat is equipped with a convertible locking retrac­
tor that
mu st be used when the safety belt is
used to attach a child safety seat. Be sure to read
the impo rtant information about this feature

Safety belt position.
- Safety belts offer optimum protection only
when the seatback is upr ight and belts are
prope rly pos itioned on the bo dy.
- Always ma ke sure tha t the rear sea t bac k­
rest to wh ic h t he cente r rea r safety be lt is
a ttached is secure ly latched whenever the
rear center safety belt is being used. If the
backrest is not securely latched, the passen­
ger will move forward with the backrest dur­
ing sudden braking, in a sudden maneuver
and especially in a cras h.
- Never attach the safety belt to the buckle
for another seat. Attaching the belt to the
wrong buckle w ill red uce safety belt effec­
t iveness and can cause serious personal in­
jury.
- A passenger who is not p roperly restrained
can be seriously in ju red by the safety be lt it­
self when it moves from the stronger par ts

of the body into critical areas like the abdo­
men.
- Always lock the convertible locking retractor
when you are securing a child safety seat in
the vehicle

Safety belt position
Correct belt position is the key to getting maxi­
mum protection from safety belts.

Standard features on your vehicle help you adjust

A WARNING
Improperly positioned safety belts can ca use
se rious personal injury in an acc ident.
- The shou lder belt should lie as close to the
center of the collar bone as possib le and
should fit well on the body. Ho ld the belt
above the latch to ngue and pull it evenly
across t he chest so th at it sits as low as pos­
sible on the pe lvis and there is no p ressure
on the abdomen . The belt should a lway s fit
snug ly

vis and never over the abdomen. Make sure

With the front seats, the height adjustment
of the seat can also be used to adjust the po­
sition of the safety belts.
Improperly worn safety belts
Incorrectly positioned safety belts can cause se­
vere injuries.
Wearing safety belts improperly can cause seri­
ous injury or death. Safety belts can only work
when they are correctly pos itioned on the body .
Improper seating positions reduce the effect ive­
n ess of safety be lts and will even inc rease the
ris k of injury and death by mov ing the safety bel t
to cr it ica l areas of the body. Imp roper seating
positions also increase the risk of serious inj ury
and death when an airbag deploys and strikes an
occ upant who is not in the co rrect seat ing posi­
tion. A driver is respons ible for the safety of all
vehicle occupants and espec ia lly for children.

Belt tensioner
How safety belt pretensioners work
Reversible safety belt pr etensioners
T he safety belts on the front seats are equ ipped
wi th reve rsible safe ty belt pretensioners. The fol­
l owing func tions a re available when the dr iver's/
front passenge r's safety belts are fastened:
- I n ce rtain driving situations, the safety bel ts
may tig hten w it h a reve rsib le tensioning func ­
t ion

-The s afe ty be lts may also tighten with thi s re-
versible tens ion ing f unct ion in m inor collisions.
Pyrotechnic safety belt pretens ioners
All safety belts except for the safety belt in the
center seat position of the rea r seat are equipped
with safety belt pretensioners. The sys tem is acti­
va ted by sensors in front, side and rear-end co lli­
s ions of great severity and in a rollover. Th is
t ightens the belt and takes up belt slack¢&.

Taking up the slack helps to re­
duce forward occupant movement during a co lli­
s io n.
(!) Tips
The pyrotechn ic safety belt pretensioners can
on ly be act ivated once.
- The safety belt pretensione rs do not deploy
in minor frontal, side and rear-end colli­
sions.
- When the pyrotechn ic safety belt preten­
sioners are activated, a fine dust is released.
Th is is normal and is not caused by a fire in
the vehicle .
- The relevant safety requirements must be
observed when the vehicle or components
of the sys tem are scrapped. An authorized
Audi dealer or qua lified wor kshop is fami lia r .,.

Booster seats and safety belts
Properly used booster seats can help protect
children weighing between about 40 lbs. and 80
lbs. (18 kg and 36 kg) who are less than 4
ft. 9
in. (57 inches/1.45 meters) tall.

The vehicle's safety belts alone will not fit most
children until they are at least 4
ft. 9 in. (57 in­
ches/1.45 meters) tall and weigh about 80 lbs.
(36 kg). Booster seats raise these ch ildren up so
that the safety belt will pass properly over the
stronger parts of their bodies and the safety belt
can help protect them in a crash.
.,. Do not use the convertible locking retractor
when using the vehicle's safety belt to restrain
a chi ld on a booster seat .
.. The shoulder belt must lie as close to the cen­
ter of the child's collar bone as possible and must lie flat and snug on the upper body. It
must never lie across the throat or neck. The
lap belt must lie across the pelvis and never
across the stomach or abdomen. Make sure the
belt lies flat and snug. Pull on the belt to tight­
en if necessary .
.,. If you must transport an older chi ld in a boos­
ter seat on the front passenger seat, you can
use the safety belt height adjustment to help
adjust the shoulder portion properly .

Children up to at least 8 years old (over 40 lbs. or
18 kg) are best protected in child safety seats de­
signed for their age and we ight. Experts say that
the skeletal structure, part icularly the pelvis, of
these children is not fully developed, and they

must not use the vehicle safety belts without a
suitable child restraint.
It is usually best to put these children in appro­
priate booster seats. Be sure the booster seat
meets all applicab le safety standards .
Booster seats raise the seating position of the
child and reposition both the lap and shoulder
parts of the safety belt so that they pass across
the child's body in the right places. The routing of
the be lt over the chi ld's body is very important
for the ch ild's protection, whether or not a boos­
ter seat is used. Children age 12 and under must
always ride in the rear seat.
Children who are at least 4
ft. 9 in. (57 inches/
1.45 meters) tall can generally use the vehicle's
three point lap and shoulder belts . Never use the
lap belt portion of the vehicle's safety belt alone
to restrain any ch ild, regard less of how big the
ch ild is. Always remember that child ren do not
have the pronounced pelvic structure required for
the proper function of lap be lt portion of the ve­
hicle's three point lap and shoulder belts. The
child's safety absolutely requires that a lap belt
portion of the safety belt be fastened snug ly and
as low as possible around the pe lvis. Never let
the lap belt portion of the safety belt pass over
the child's stomach or abdomen .
In a crash, airbags must inflate within a blink of
an eye and with considerab le force. In order to do
its job, the airbag needs room to inflate so that it
will be there to protect the occupant as the occu­
pant moves forward into the airbag .
A vehicle occ upant who is out of position and too
close to the a irbag gets in the way of an inflating
airbag. When an occupant is too close , he or she
will be struck violently and w ill receive serious or
possibly even fata l injury .
In order for the airbag to offer protect ion, it is
important that all vehicle occupants, especially
any children , who must be in the front seat be­
cause of exceptiona l circumstances, be properly
restrained and as far away from t he airbag as
