using the emergency release in vehicles with a
fixed rear seat backrest, make s ure the brack­

Child safety Lock

The child safety lock prevents the rear doors
from being opened from the inside and the rear
power windows from be operated.

leavi ng the vehicle, even for a sho rt period
of t ime. This applies part icularly when chil­
dren remain in t he vehicle. Otherwise chil­

which inc reas es t he risk of an ac cident.

Controls
The driver can control all power windows.

All power window switc hes are equipped with a
two-stage fu nction:
Opening and clos ing the w indows

"' To open or close the window comp letely, press
the switch down or pull the switch up briefly to
the second level. The operat ion will stop if the
sw itch is pressed/pulled again.

- The backrest must be securely latched to
ensure th e safety belt is protect ing the rear
seat positions .
- The backrest must be latched secu re ly so
objects cannot slide forward out of the lug ­
gag e compartment dur ing sudden braki ng .

- Make sure the seat belt is not pinched or
damaged when folding the backrest .
- If you move the front seat back when the
rear seat backrest is folded forward, you
could damage the head restraints on the
rear seat .
- To reduce the risk of damage, move the rear
head restra ints down before folding the
rear backrests forward

thro ugh the luggage comp artmen t. This p re ­
ven ts any ac cess to the l uggage compa rtment
from the vehicle interior .

If luggage or cargo is to be carr ied on the roof,
you must observe the fo llowing :
- Onl y a spe cially designed roof rack may be used
on yo ur vehicle. These roo f racks are the bas is

for a complete roof rack system. Additional at­
tachments/carrier systems are necessary to
transport luggage and sports equipment. We recommend roof racks and attachments from
the Audi Genu ine Accessories program.
- When installing the roof rack, make sure that it is mounted only at the designated points on
the roof¢
fig. 72.
- The permissible roof load for your vehicle is 200 lbs (90 kg). The roof load is the total of the
weight of the roof rack, the attachments and
the cargo you are carrying. However, you must also note the permitted load of the carr ier sys­
tem being used. For the permitted axle load
and the permitted tota l veh icle we ight, refer to
¢page 361 .
A WARNING
-
- Follow the installation instructions provided
with the roof rack system. If you do not se­
cure the roof rack system and objects on the
roof correctly, they cou ld come loose from
the vehicle and cause an acc ident.
- Using a roof rack system increases the risk of an accident, because it changes the dr iv­
ing characteristics by shifting the center of
grav ity and/or the increasing the surface
area exposed to wind. Adapt your driving
and speed to the cu rrent conditions .
(D Note
-If you use other roof luggage rack systems
or do not install the racks as intended, any
damage to the veh icle is not covered by the
war ranty . Carefully follow the assembly and
i nstallation instruct ions included with the
roof rack carrier system.
- Make su re that the open luggage compart­
ment l id and the tilt ing/slid ing sun roof* do
not come into contact with objects on the
roof.
@) For the sake of the environment
Your veh icle will requ ire more fuel due to the
increased wind resistance . So remove the roof
rack after using it.

Driving
next traffic light is red . This produces an engine
braking effect, which helps to protect the brakes
and tires and reduces the emissions and fue l con ­
sumpt ion to zero (fuel shut-off during decelera­
t ion).
Shift effici ently
An effective way to save fuel is to upshift earlier.
Staying in a gear too long uses fue l unnecessari ­
ly .
P ress down o n the acce lerator peda l slowly and
avoid "kick -down".
Avoid full acceleration
You shou ld rare ly t rave l at the maximum vehicle
speed. High speeds cause a disp roportiona tely
h igh inc rease in fuel consump tion, emissions and
traffic no ise . Slower driving saves fuel.
Reduce idling time
The Start/Stop system* he lps to reduce the idling
time automatically. In vehicles witho ut the Start/
S top system* , it is efficient to swit ch the eng ine
off when stopped at r,;1ilro,;1d crossi ngs and long
red lights . Stopping the engine for 30 -40 sec ­
onds already saves more fuel than the amount of
extra fuel needed to restart the engine.
It t akes a very long time in idle to war m the en ­
g ine up to opera ting tempera ture . Wea r and
emissions are especially high in the warm -up
p hase . Therefore, yo u should begin driving im ­
mediately after starting the engine. Avoid high
RPMs while do ing th is.
Have maintenance performed regularly
By having ma intenance performed regularly on
your vehicle, you can help to reduce f uel con­
sumpt ion befo re yo u even start to dr ive. The
maintenance condition of your vehicle not only
affects t raffic safety and long-term value but a l­
so impacts
fuel consumpt ion . A poorly main ­
tained engine can lead to f uel consumption that
is 10% higher than normal.
Avoid short trips
The engine and exhaust cleaning system m ust
reach the ir opt imal
operating temperature to ef­
fectively reduce consumption and em iss ions.

A cold engine uses a d isproportionately high
amount of fue l. The engine reaches operating
temperat ure and cons umption norma lizes on ly
after approximate ly
four ki lometers.
Check the tire pres sure
To save fue l, make sure the t ires are always in­
flated to the correct press ure
¢ page 32 7. The
fuel consumpt ion can increase by S% if the pres ­
s u re is only 0.5 bar too low. Due to the increased
roll ing resistance, low tire pressures w ill also
l ead to greater tire
wear and will affect dr iving
behavior.
Do not drive on
winter tires year-round, as this
will consume up to 10% more f uel.
Eliminate unnecessary we ight
Since eve ry kil og ram o f extra weight in creases
fuel consumption, a quick inspection of the lug­
gage compartment may be worth it to avoid un­
necessary we ight.
When no t be ing used, a roof rack sho uld be re ­
moved to decrease the wind resistance of the ve­
hicle . You will save approx imately
12% of your
fuel when at speeds from 62-75 mph (100-120 km/h).
Save energy
The eng ine drives the generator, which generates
electricity; the fuel consumption also inc reases
with the demand for e lectricity. Therefore, switch
e lectrical equ ipment off when you no longer
need it. Examples of eq uipment that uses a lot of
energy are air blowers at a high setting, the rear
window defogger and seat heating* .
(D Note
Do not leave engine idling unattended after
starting . If warning lights shou ld come on to
i ndica te improper operation, they would go
unheeded . Extended idling also prod uces
h eat, w hic h could result i n overheating o r
o ther damage to the veh icle o r othe r prope r­
ty .

Airbag syste m
seat. Please be sure to read the important infor­
mation in the sections that follow and be sure to
heed all of the WARNINGS.
A WARNING
To reduce the risk of injury when an airbag in­
flates, always wear safety belts properly.
- If you are unrestrained, leaning forward, sit­ ting s ideways or out of position in any way,
your risk of injury is much h igher.
- You will also receive serious injuries and could even be killed if you are up aga inst the
airbag or too close to it when it inflates -
even with an Advanced Airbag
r:::;, page 253 .
A WARNING
A child in a rearward-facing chi ld safety seat
installed on the front passenge r seat w ill be
ser iously injured and can be killed i f the front
airbag inflates -even w ith an Advanced Ai rbag
System.
- Although the Advanced A irbag System in
yo ur vehicle is designed to tu rn off the front
airbag when a rearwa rd -facing child re ­
straint has been insta lled on the front pas­
senger seat, nobody can absolutely guaran­
tee that deployment is impossible in all con­
ceivable s ituations that may happen during
the useful life of your vehicle .
- The inflating a irbag w ill hit the child safety
seat or infant carrier with great force and
will smash the chi ld safety seat and child
against the backrest, center armrest , door,
o r roof .
- Always install rearward -facing ch ild re ­
straints on the rear seat .
- If you must install a rearward fac ing ch ild
safety seat on the front passenger seat be­
cause of exceptiona l circumstances and the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF~; light does not
c ome on and stay on, immed iate ly install
the rear-fac ing ch ild safety seat in a rear
seating position and have the airbag system
inspected by your authorized Audi dea ler.

If, in exceptional circumstances, you must in­
stall a forward-facing child restraint on the
front passenger's seat:
- Always make sure the forward-facing seat
has been des igned and certified by its man­
ufacturer for use on a front seat with a pas­
senger front and side airbag.
- Never put the forwa rd-facing child restraint
up against or very nea r the instrument pan­
el.
- Always move the front passenge r seat to
the highest posit ion in the up and down ad­
justmen t range and move it back to the
rearmost posit io n in the seat's fo re and aft
adjustment range, as far away from the a ir ­
bag as poss ible, before install ing the for­
ward-facing chi ld restraint.
- Always make sure that the safety be lt upper
anchorage is behind the chi ld rest raint and
not next to o r in front of the c hild restraint
so that the safety be lt will be p roper ly posi­
tioned.
- Always make sure that there is noth ing on
the front passenger seat that will cause the
capacitive passenger detection system in
the seat to signal to the Airbag System that
the seat is occup ied by a person when it is
no t, or to signal that it is occupied by some­
one who is heavier than the person ac tually
si tting on the sea t. T he presence of addi­
tional objects could cause the passenger
front airbag to be turned on when it should
be
off, or could cause the airbag to work in a
way that is d ifferent from the way it wou ld
have worked without the object on the seat.
- Make sure that the
PASSENGER AIR BAG
OFF ~;
light comes on and stays on all the
time whenever the ign it ion is switched on.
Advanced Airbag System components
T he front passenger seat in your veh icle has a lot
of ve ry important parts of the Advanced A irbag
System i n it. These parts incl ude the capacitive
passenger detection system, wir ing , b rackets,
and more. The control uni t moni tors the system
on the front passenge r seat when t he ignit ion is ..,.

Airbag system
A WARNING
A child in a rearward-facing child safety seat
installed on the front passenger seat will be
seriously injured and can be killed if the front
airbag inflates - even with an Advanced Airbag
System.
- The inflating airbag will hit the child safety
seat or infant carrier with great force and
will smash the child safety seat and child against the backrest, center armrest, door
or roof.
- Always install rear-facing child safety seats
on the rear seat.
- If you must install a rearward -facing child
safety seat on the front passenger seat be­ cause of exceptional circumstances and the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF,;, light does not
come on and stay on, immediately install
the rear-facing child safety seat in a rear
seating position and have the airbag system inspected by your authorized Audi dealer .
A WARNING
Objects between you and the airbag will in­
crease the risk of injury in a crash by interfer ­
ing with the way the airbag unfolds or by be­
ing pushed into you as the airbag inflates.
- Never hold things in your hands or on your
lap when the vehicle is in use .
- Never transport items on or in the area of
the front passenger seat . Objects could
move into the area of the front airbags dur­
ing braking or other sudden maneuvers and
become dangerous projectiles that can
cause serious personal injury if the airbags
inflate.
- Never place or attach accessories or other
objects (such as cupholders, telephone
brackets, large, heavy or bulky objects) on
the doors, over or near the area marked
"AIRBAG" on the steering wheel, instru­
ment panel, seat backrests or between
those areas and yourself . These objects
could cause injury in a crash, especially
when the airbags inflate .
- Never recline the front passenger's seat to
transport objects. Items can also move into

the area of the side airbag or the front air­
bag during braking or in a sudden maneu­
ver. Objects near the airbags can become projectiles and cause injury, particularly
when the seat is reclined .
- Never place or transport objects on the
front passenger seat. Objects on the front
passenger seat could cause the capacitive
sensor in the seat to signal to airbag system
that the seat is occupied by a person when it
in fact is not, or that the person on the seat
is heavier than he or she actually is. The
change in electric capacitance because of
such objects can cause the passenger front
airbag to be turned on when it should be
off, or can cause the airbag to work in a way
that is different from the way it would have
worked without objects on the seat .
- Always make sure that there is nothing on
the front passenger seat that will cause the
capacitive passenger detection system in
the seat to signal to the Airbag System that the seat is occupied by a person when it is
not , or to signal that it is occupied by some ­
one who is heavier than the person actually
sitting on the seat. The presence of an ob­
ject could cause the passenger front airbag
to be turned on when it should be off, or
could cause the airbag to work in a way that is different from the way it would have
worked without the object on the seat .
A WARNING
The fine dust created when airbags deploy can
cause breathing problems for people with a
history of asthma or other breathing condi­
tions .
- To reduce the risk of breathing problems,
those with asthma or other respiratory con­
ditions should get fresh air right away by
getting out of the vehicle or opening win­
dows or doors.
- If you are in a collision in which airbags de­
ploy , wash your hands and face with mild
soap and water before eating.
- Be careful not to get the dust into your eyes,
or into any cuts or scratches. ..,_

& WARNING
Charging a battery can be dangerous.
- Always follow the operat ing instruct ions
provided by the battery charger manufactur­
er when charging your battery .
- Never charge a frozen ba ttery . It may ex­
plode because of gas trapped in the ice. A l­
low a frozen battery to thaw out first .
- Do not reuse batteries wh ich were frozen.
The battery housing may have cracked and
weakened when the battery froze .
- Charge the battery in a we ll ventilated area.
Keep away from open flame or electrical
spark. Do not smoke . Hydrogen gas generat­
ed by the battery is exp losive.
- To reduce the danger of explosion, never
connect or disconnect charger cables whi le
the charger is operat ing.
- Fast charging a battery is dangerous and
should only be attempted by a competent
technician with the proper equipment.
- Battery acid that may spill during charging
should be washed off with a solution of
warm water and baking soda to neutralize
the acid .
(D Note
Never use a fast charger as a booster to start
the engine. This will serious ly damage sensi­
tive electronic components, such as control
units, relays, radio, etc ., as well as the battery
charger .
Replacing the battery
Your veh icle is equipped with an inte llige nt ene r­
gy management system for d istr ibut ing elect rici ­
ty ¢
page 138. The battery cha rges better in
vehicles with the en ergy management system
than in vehicles without the system. To ensure
that th e additional pow er is availabl e after re ­
p lac ing the battery, rep lacing w ith the same type
of b attery from the s ame manufac turer ( like the
battery that was delivered with the veh icle) is
recommended . Yo ur authorized deale r must code
the battery in the energy management system to
Ch eck ing and Filling
enable you to use the energy management func­
tions corr ectly aft er replacing the batt ery .
If it is no t possib le to use a battery of this type,
the new battery mus t have the same capacity,
vo ltage ( 12-volts), amperage, construction and
plug sealing.
When install ing the battery, make sure the ig ni­
t ion and all electr ica l cons umers are tu rned off.
Q) Note
- Vehicles, fo r example with a Start-Stop sys­
t em*, a re equipped with a specia l cycle­
proof bat tery (such as an AGM battery). In­
sta lling a different type of battery can cause
prob lems in the veh icle elect rical system .
When replacing the vehicle battery, always
install one w ith the same specifications as
the origina l battery.
- Make sure that the gas venting hose is al­
ways connected to the original opening on the battery s ide . Otherw ise gasses or bat­
tery acid could leak out .
- Battery mounts and clamps must always be
secured correct ly .
- Read and follow the warn ings under
¢
page 313, Working on the battery before
performing any work on the battery.
® For the sake of the environment
Because of the problem of proper d isposa l of
a battery, we recommend your authori zed
Audi dealer change the battery for you. Bat ­
teries contain sulfur ic acid and lead and must
always be disposed of properly in compliance
wi th a ll envi ronmenta l reg ulat ions. Dispos ing
of veh icle bat teries improperly is very da nger­
ous to the environment.
